absolute steal for the latest and greatest from carlinkit. i have one of these and it works well. ive admittedly only tested the android auto so far but i imagine carplay is just as good from what i've seen.

this is a successor to the carlinkit 5, which was well received on here at almost $40.

this supports both usb c and usb a.

detailed review here(youtube.com) from anthony barker, who reviews a lot of these dongles
an unboxing/overview(youtube.com) from gary cantrell

this is an affiliated item, so don't forget about your 19% tcb cashback(topcashback.com.au)
(you can check affiliation here(portals.aliexpress.com)). you can also stack with ali's in-house cashback and coins.

before someone else points it out, ill note that if you happen to have a raspberry pi (or similar sbc) with the right specs (usb otg + wifi/bt + low power enough for a car context) you can set it up as a wireless aa(github.com) or wireless carplay(github.com) dongle. i dont believe there's any way to do both with an rpi but id love to be corrected on this

For those paying in USD this is how you get the correct exchange rate in PayPal:

Setting overseas websites to AUD or letting PayPal do the currency conversion results in an inflated rate. To get the correct rate you need a card without international fees and do the following:

  • Set the website currency to USD
  • Checkout with PayPal
  • Select your card with no international fees
  • Click "See currency options"
  • Select USD to bill the card in USD instead of AUD
  • Proceed with checkout

Great find - @WatchNerd and myself can at least rest for a while when these spams were monthly previously

    • +1

yep, these are priced stupidly outside of ali

  • what's the difference between this and the carlinkit 5 ?

    • smaller form factor and usb a+c support without extra cables. not sure abt any more specifics than that tbh. and its cheaper!

      • When we will use usb c? Most car has a now maybe tesla does c?

        • Tesla has USB C. A 2019 BMW X1 I was loaned also had USB C.

  • -1

Thanks @lachlantula! ordered, but it came up as $14.30 for me, then at checkout added $2.51 for GST?! Not sure what happened there but can't complain for that price.
Only thing is the image of the unit changed after the oder from the the boxy dongle to the memory stick type. Again not sure what happened there, or why they have gizilion different models. Just wanted to share my experience for what it is worth.

    • +1

but it came up as $14.30 for me, then at checkout added $2.51 for GST?!

yeah.. sorry, i should've clarified - this is a thing aliexpress does

Only thing is the image of the unit changed after the oder from the the boxy dongle to the memory stick type

the memory stick type is the one you want, don't worry :) the picture on this post is wrong

      • super, thanks for making time to clarify mate!

Unless I'm mistaken Mini 5 Pro is cheaper elsewhere on Aliexpress? $11.21 at above link for me

    • do you have the mini5 selected or the mini5 pro amongst the variants?

      • 2nd box - Mini5 Pro.

        • +1

oh, i see. i believe that's for new aliexpress customers only. good price though!

          • +1

@lachlantula: You're right, my account had logged out for whatever reason.

Can still get bit cheaper if not new if you go bundle deals route, $14.09 for me which is pretty nice

            • @UosdwisRDewoh: With enough email addresses and credit cards, you can always be a new AliExpress customer ;)

      • +1

The Mini5 Pro USB dongle is US$8.99 before tax in Bundle Deals.

        https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/144344/120545/screensh…

        • Yep - I got it in bundle deals for a bit cheaper.

There's now "bundle" directly competing with "choice". So annoying because I have one item in choice and two in bundle

  • there is still tax added to the price so im getting 12.64 USD with some coins used too

  • Is there a switch to go between Android and carplay?

My partner and I have iphone and android devices so need to be able to choose which one gets connected if we are both in the car.

The current dongle we use has a switch but it's a much larger unit.

    • Same situation. Any advice anyone?

    • i don't believe so unfortunately but this isn't a situation ive had to test, so cant confirm. i suppose one of you could turn off bluetooth before entering the car but that is a hassle.

      • Thanks, yes it would be a hassle. I'll pass.

[EDIT] I watched the linked YT review and there is no switch - he calls it out at the end as something that should be added. It looks in the review he has to even unplug the unit and disable BT on the other device in order to switch. Way too much hassle.

    • +1

FWIW, AAWireless is bringing out the Two+ soon that'll do switching

  • Just purchased, $20 is worth a gamble for wireless CarPlay!

  • +1

Can someone help a noob please

I have a Mazda 2 with a little screen with no CarPlay. What would I need in addition to this to make it have CarPlay? Or does this alone make the car have CarPlay?
    Thanks!

    • +6

No. This only makes it wireless.

You need a new head unit or a standalone unit to do so.
      Something like this : https://amzn.asia/d/98R2qg0

      • +1

As in the head unit must already have carplay/android auto, and this device simply means you can connect to the head unit wirelessly instead of via a cable?

        • +1

          Correct.
It only makes an existing system wireless.

      • I have head unit wireless one
But can I use this one for Better speed or just keep using my head unit ?

    • +2

There is a unit you can buy for around $100 from memory which you fit into car to replace existing usb outlets giving you CarPlay/AA. It’s around $500 fitted from Mazda. Not sure it’s compatible with your vehicle.

    • What year mazda 2 is it? If it's a 2015 or later, a dealer can install the upgrade for $500:

  • Does anyone notice that wireless Android Auto chews the battery life of your phone?

    • +1

      How bad is it?

      • +1

        Very noticeable.
I have a galaxy fold3. With screen off and a short trip you lose a few percent battery. Never measured it but I'd say you lose 1-2% every 5-10mins.

So for the most part I'll plug the phone in to the charger which defeats the purpose of wireless Android Auto

        • Tend to agree. However in my case I have wireless charging. So still seating the phone and having wireless both charging and android auto works well

        • +1

Thanks I'll pass on this and keep plugging in :)

        • +1

One scenario where you could still benefit is if your carplay usb charging is quite slow, you could have a 12v charger connected to your phone for faster charging, and still have wireless carplay. That is my intended use for this one, anyway!

        • You can try lowering max resolution for Android Auto. It's a setting in Android Auto after you enabled developer mode for Android Auto app.

Thanks OP, bought it, need to buy a car with Carplay next

    • That’s some forward bargain thinking. When’s the next EV steal coming I wonder?

    • Just make sure to buy a car that doesn’t have wireless CarPlay; only wired. Or else, bargain lost! 😞

    • Or in other words, a moot bargain pursuit.

  • i bought this from amazon the other day for $35 via a link form ozbargain https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0BGPGWS8K?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_f…
    which is better ?

i see this does android auto and carplay , is that the only difference

  • Thanks OP! Hopefully it works.

  • So for this to work, your car needs to have Android Auto already, correct?

    • Yes

    • +1

It's basically a usb wireless adaptor for car play and android auto. A mini wireless adaptor for pc these days is as cheap as $5.

  • When you have multiple devices in the car, how do you pick which gets connected?

    • +1

      Lucky dip

    • My andoid auto has an option to set priority but previously as not always worked I removed the other phones from the list. Now there's an upgrade which I haven't done, I can't tell if it's fixed yet.

  • Thank OP, needed a new one for the new car. Came to $20.78 for me.
Have a similar one in the run around and works like a dream, only pain it takes ages to connect so hopefully this one is much faster as advertised.

    • how is it coming as $20.78, if the price is set in AUD it shows 14.88 (includes $2.51 Tax) for me

      • Had coins that I used that brought it down a little.
        You seeing it as US?

        • Its in AUD.I think the reason is explained in one of the comments above

  • Thanks OP. Got 1! Although, I've heard about heavy battery drain while using wireless AA. Let's see how it goes!

    • +3

Yeah, it's fairly taxing. At least 10%/hour while driving.
I wonder if different adaptors affect this - I've gone through about five of them to try and they are all similar. It makes sense for drain though.

  • I can’t seem to get the cart to go through, tried with PayPal and card and both times says transaction cancelled

    • +1

Just downloaded the app and paid via Apple Pay and it has worked :)

  • Is the mini better…..

    • vs carlinkit 5:

smaller form factor and usb a+c support without extra cables. not sure abt any more specifics than that tbh. and its cheaper!

  • Does this come with an extension usb cble? If I plug this in directly to my usb port I don't think the armrest would close properly.

    • I dont think so. Mine is CX-5 and I am sure the armrest wont close. This is lengthier than the other dongles available in the market. I have the non-USB stick one (v 5) and it works perfectly fine.

      • Yes, mine is Mazda too. I will just buy the cable. It's cheap.

    • +1

can confirm it does not come with a cable

  • Anyone know if this one works with RAV4 2023? Got one of these (not this brand) before but didn't work with RAV4 but works perfect with CX5

  • Any product suggestions to get car play for Mazda 3. Thanks

    • Only installed my unit yesterday. But I recently ordered the Eonon M3BLA12S from their website for about $420.
First impressions are pretty good as long as you're comfortable tweaking some of the settings, can't comment on the longevity of the product yet.

    • If your car has the LCD screen already you can do the upgrade yourself in a weekend with a relatively cheap part: https://www.amazon.com.au/Retrofit-TK78-66-9U0C-00008FZ34-Co…

I just did it yesterday and it wasn't too hard but it is pretty fiddly and you will need to take off a lot of trim.

  • +2

Access it via the coins page for extra savings - comes to US$9.11 all up for me.

  • My cheap-ass XUDA works a treat, will this make any difference?

    • if it works for you, i wouldn't bother. i bought a car with a android-based headunit and my s23 can't seem to pair with it. using this dongle works a treat, though.

    • +1

I've been through four different cheap AA adaptors and have just installed this one, to see if there is any discernible difference - I can safely say no, I can't tell any difference between the adaptors except for OTA updates (if available, and how to perform the update).

      • Champion, thx.

  • Well looks like no support for mitsubishi cars as per this link https://www.carlinkit.store/pages/compatibility-car-model-li…

    • The previous model worked fine (albeit a bit slow) on my 2015 Pajero.

      • thanks for confirming this, I have still ordered, will give it a go

  • Cheers got one! says stock is low

  • Previous version of carlinKit (I think it's 5) didn't work with my new corolla (2023) but worked well with a little old corolla (2020). In between these two model years, they did something to prevent it from working. Hopefully this updated version works, fingers crossed. It's very convenient as your phone just gets connected as you enter the car without having to plug in.

    • sometimes updating or downgrading firmware can help with these sorts of weird problems

    • Did you find out if it works with your '23 corolla?

      • +1

Received it a couple of days ago. Unfortunately, it still didn't work with my '23 corolla. I think it's not this device's fault. Toyota has done something in their system 'blocking' this third party devices. 2023 onwards Toyota introduced OTA system updates (similar to Tesla) and I think allowing access to these android auto wireless systems make that system vulnerable hence they may have blocked that altogether.. That's the only explanation I can think of. All the android auto wireless dongles I've tried with my newer Toyota have failed to do the job so far. They all worked with the old Corolla (2022 or older).

  • These don't work for tesla do they?

    • +3

Teslas don't support Carplay or AA, so no.

      • Weren't they going to fix this with a software update like 100 years ago now? LOL

        • +1

It was never on the cards for them to add support for CP/AA. They're invested in their native UI/system, which to be fair is actually very good compared to most other cars.

There's nothing to be "fixed" from their POV.

          • @WowBargain: Everyone is different. For example, someone would have offline google maps downloaded into his phone, or offline youtube music downloaded into his phone and may want to play them or use them via android auto. I don't know if the Tesla infortainment system will have its full function when there is no internet connectivity, whereas Android auto will still have the full functionality via offline stuff.

  • +1

    Mothers day sorted. Thanks OP.

  • Got one of these for a Honda CRV. Wouldnt work with a Samsung Android but worked with an Iphone. Samsung worked with cable but when it connected to the MiniPro it wouldnt initiate Android Auto.

    • hello. I just received this and got the same problem. it prompts up with apply car play and i have android.. did you find a way for it to work?

  • Anyway to switch between 2 iPhone? Using one from another brand but a hassle when both wife’s iPhone and my iPhone are in the car and you need to switch.

    • +1

I turn Bluetooth off on phone I don’t want to use these with

  • In for 1, casback was 3.25 which brought the price down to 18-19

  • Wonder if this works with XUV700

  • Why is this so much cheaper than Aawireless?

    • +2

a better question might be 'why is aawireless so much more expensive than this'? i imagine they have a better support team etc but otherwise..

  • thanks op. ordered one. au$13.27
