  • I have no photography education or experience. Would this camera or a Nikon D3000 be better for me if money was not a concern?

    • +2

I would get a Nikon rather than a Sanyo anytime.

    • +3

if money was not a concern

Then you would buy a proper DSLR, instead of this pretend one.

    • Obviously any DSLR is going to be far superior. OTOH, for this price you won't beat that feature set.

    • Depends. If you are a casual shooter and are happy with even iphone quality pictures, then get the Sanyo. DSLR's would be overkill.

  • If money was no concern get the Sony RX100. You won't regret it. It's like an SLR quality but pocket size. I'm loving mine.

  • Some good deals on super zooms lately. Just wish there was a deal on a super zoom with 1080p rather than 720p.

  • Could somebody please tell me what makes the Nikon D3000 better than the other. Don't worry about other cameras my mate just happens to have one and he'll sell it to me for $100 and he's been a friend for a long time so I trust him and all and camera is almost brand new so still warranty. Anyway what would make the Nikon or Sanyo better than the other?

The two areas I was most concerned with were:

Camera Interface? i.e. does it walk me through everything or do I have to read manual for 3+ hours and take photography classes or can I just put the Nikon onto "auto" and expect a slightly decent shot?
Lens Quality? I'm pretty sure that a good lens is better than 1 Trillion Megapixel camera otherwise you'll just have a greatly defined blurry shot but I'm not sure how these lenses rate against each other.

    • Advantage of a DSLR / Mirrorless compared to compacts

      • Larger sensor on the DSLR
      • Faster focusing speed on the DSLR
      • Better output quality on the DSLR

Lens quality - Let's put it this way, the cheapest lens on the Nikon probably costs as much as this camera. It's almost like comparing a Yaris to a V8 Supercar in terms of performance. You can figure the rest out yourself. BTW, blurriness is usually caused by either vibration / hand shake with slow shutter speed or the image was not focused properly in the first place. Most, if not all, cameras and camera lenses in the market (toy lenses / Lomo cameras not included) can produce sharp enough images for prints / viewing on monitors.

Camera interface - it's not so much about the interface but whether you are willing to learn about photography. Once you have a basic grasp of basic photography concepts (e.g. aperture, shutter, iso, etc), you'll be fine. However, if you just want to stay at auto mode like a point and shoot, the additional performance / features on DSLRs may not be that relevant.

  • +1

Seems to be a detuned version of the same camera listed in the Sony H-100 thread (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/89430), the Sony seems to be a marginally better camera though.

21x zoom is equivalent to 500mm+ lens. lets see if you can get a 500mm+ lens for less than $100
