Is this in any way superior to the $99 Samsung that was listed here before? Only thing that makes this semi appealing to me is $94.05 with staff discount. Although, I've already bought the Samsung. :)

    • I would like to know the answer to this aswell! Exactly same position as you when I saw it @ dick smith today (besides me being a staff aha) BTW the Samsung is WB100 if someone comes across this post!

don't you love it when 2 "techsperts" don't know the products that are sold at their store lol

People at Dicksmith work there for money, that's it. They don't care about technology, well most of them.

In my opinion a great camera for the price.
    Some good reviews here
    http://www.flipkart.com/sony-dsc-h100-point-shoot/product-re…

    • all the reviews are based from india where it is sold for approx $220 AUD and all the reviewers thought it was a gr8 price.. haha .. and we get to buy it at less than half the price.

      • Just goes to show that wages have little to do with retail prices. Imagine the average hourly rate in India. Does it create cheaper prices for brand name products in that country? Not at all. This argument used by the Australian Retail Association that wages are responsible for the higher prices here compared to US, Canada, UK etc. is BS.

  • What is the shot times like? eg. Power on to shot, time between shots, etc.

I tried one yesterday and it seemed to take a long time to process the shots.

    • +1

      How was the picture quality?

      • Funny that… I only took notice of the first shot, because it was completely white! The image was find before taking it, very strange.

Didn't try the Nikon next to it - they are pretty much identical cameras.

    • Without knowing the specifics of this camera, I can just say that some cameras' operational speed depends quite heavily on the speed of the memory card used. A slow card makes everything slow, shot-to-shot times, reviewing etc.

  • +5

Very tempting on price. Seem it first marketed in India, do not has any review outside India. The picture from the you tube look bad, and the picture from above review does not look good either. Found a reasonable expert review in the comment here http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/sony_cybershot_dsc_rx…

" I don’t understand why anyone would actually look for either one of these cameras, other than to say that NIKON and SONY are very good Friends. Maybe even friends with benefits?? Sorry guys but that’s it for me today. The time I spent on this was such a waste

If you live in India, get the Sony. Live In the USA, Get the NIKON Either way it’s going to be wasted money."

yes. I have a feeling my old camera may just work the same as this one.

    • +6

it's different camera review u r looking at its dsc-RX100….this one is dsc-h100

      • Its talked about in the comments section…

        • The only comment I could find about it was- "Okay, after a long and difficult phone call, The SONY DSC-H100 that you seek is built in, and for INDIA. The Price, if you could understand this is MRP Rs 12,990 Maybe $129.90?"

          Not too informative….

        • +3

Basically it said this Sony H-100 is = NIKON L810 , so look for the Nikon L810's review!

        • That's around $250

        • +2

          12990 Indian Rupee equals
          228.77 Australian Dollar

        • Its Approx 229 AUD not 129.. Do your maths or use xe.com @videoman

        • It wasn't my math, I was just quoting the comment that was on the review site.

  • Nice Price & zoom capability, but 720p recording struggles to auto focus properly, just watched a few samples, some more horrifying than others…, but as a point & shoot camera its definitely worth some money !

    • But if I want a point and shoot one, I wouldn't buy a bulky one!

      • +10

Same here, I'd rather eat Vegemite than buy this crap…

        • +8

          I love vegemite

      • Totally agree, I ended up getting a Nikon Coolpix P7000 (similar size) a couple years ago and whilst I love the camera I find myself often turning back to my Cannon Ixus i that easily slips into my pocket (slightly longer than a credit card but not as high).

Save your money and get a compact (heaps of good deals around) unless you like lugging something this big around.

  • +2

    Thanks Northroo1,just bought one.
What do some of you expect here? the quality of a high end SLR for $99

  • +3

Just remember it's a big camera, so if you want something compact, look elsewhere.

    • +6

Somehow I found the Indian reviews are copying each other reviews, then pop up all the ads.

      • -1

Same thing happens with english review sites.

  • +10

AA batteries killed it for me

    • +1

      Whats wrong with AA batteries?

      • +1

Cameras like these chew through batteries, having AA means you will either be buying them constantly or recharging them constantly. It would be nice if it had a rechargeable lithium battery.

      • +17

Exactly, what else are we going to do with our eneloop batteries?

        • +1

Yep i use them in my pentax ist. it takes 4 AA.
and always have spares in the bag. very convienient.

    • +3

When you travel, AA batteries are easy to find
with dedicated lithium battery- you must recharge it or add spare batt and still bring the charger

      • +1

Exactly. Lithium ion offers tons of benefits, but I'm carting a 2nd battery, and multi charger with me now. Grass is always greener. I always used the top level lithium AA'S for previous cameras, and they'd last a full 4 week holiday, 1000+ photos and plenty of viewing. For this camera, who cares. It's not the deal breaker.

      • Got 2 Hong Kong specials for my old Ixus for about $10 the pair shipped, high capacity too, camera lasts forever now.

  • +2

You little beauty! I was just recently checking this one out and for $99, I ain't complaining! Thanks so much:)

  • +5

This appears to be a cut down version of the more accomplished HX100V:

    http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonydschx100v/

It lacks Carl Zeiss optics, 1080p video and 10fps burst shooting that its more expensive cousin possesses. There's a reason its heavily discounted. I would say the Canon sx150 deal from JB is a better one than this.

    • How is that camera better? They are both very different so they can't be really compared. 336mm (@12mp) vs 525mm (@16mp) and different form factors.

    • -3

      +1

    • Yes I agree, I posted that deal this morning but it was pulled down as a duplicate (however the original only had 3 comments).

      IMO the Canon benefits from:
-a Canon lens (as opposed to a Sony, who's good lenses are all Carl Zeiss)
      -Is more compact
-has PASM (manual) modes while this has half a*sed manual modes
-Runs on 2 AAs instead of 4

Opened mine today and had a play, was impressed with the features and options available, wasn't sure why anyone had mentioned that it was slow, was plenty fast enough for me and the person I bought it for. Flash takes a few seconds to charge but that's normal. Still on the same set of Eneloops I just charged for the first time after 50 shots with and without flash and some video, unfortunately can't seem to find a battery indicator anywhere but they are still going strong, altogether very happy with the sx150

      • -1

I just love how you can get negged by ppl too lazy to leave a response for simply responding to someone's question

  • +4

what's up with these p and s cameras popping up with the same bulky design and 4 aa required batts?

there's nikon l610, the samsung, fujifilm and now sony joins the bandwagon…

they all look and function almost the same except for the brand and model

did someone in China made a blueprint of this camera and all the big brands go "ehhhhh that will do"

    • +1

21X optical zoom. Due to the small sensor size, at max zoom, it is equivalent to a 500mm on a full frame sensor.

4 AA batteries is due to CCD sensor being used (which needs more power). There are pros and cons of CCD (vs CMOS) sensors.

No manual focus option probably makes it quite hard to do bokeh on this camera.

      • The Canon SX150 is CCD and they managed to use 2 AAs so the CCD can't be the only factor one would think

        • True… 4 AAs also allow faster internal flash cycle time. It also makes the max. number of shots (with 1 set of 4AA batteries) higher (than 2AA). Plus, the long zoom lens take up space so might as well utilise the space.

        • +1

I'd rather carry 2 AAs and 2 Spares than 4 AAs and 4 spares. Also means I can charge a full set with spares in at once (most chargers only take 4 AAs). Much more convenient for all the people complaining about batteries and battery life.

Still it's horses for courses, I can see people that don't care about manual modes buying this or the previously listed Samsung and people that do care about manual modes buying the Canon. The reason I edge the Canon is because IMO if you aren't getting the manual modes you can stick with your compact P&S (but that's just my op.)

        • Jackson, I plus'ed your comment because it is reasonable (and shouldn't have been neg'ed).

I see the Canon as being an alternative in a different product range ie they are not directly comparable camera's (horses for courses). The canon is a slightly fatter 'super-slim' camera, whereas the Sony is a smaller version of something like an SLR/traditional camera.

Comparing apples with apples would be the Sony and this Canon:

          http://www.jbhifi.com.au/photo/digital-cameras/canon/16mp-di…

PS, OLYMPUS SZ-14 looks pretty decent too?

          http://www.jbhifi.com.au/photo/digital-cameras/olympus/sz-14…

        • A friend has the older model of the sx500 and I have to say that it's a step up from what we're discussing, eg. apart from having all the manual modes on it I also doubt the Sony has the same quality build as the canon you linked to (metal control switches etc). Really in the bottom range it just depends on which corners the company decided to cut to save money and finding one where they match your expectations

The Oly looks decent however again it's in a different class (compact) so it's not really an apples to apples comparison either. Seems to me there's more options with cameras these days than phone plans.

    • +2

Probably because they are all badge engineered camera from Foxconn? If you have a look at cameras with the same lens and sensor combo in the market using the following keywords - "F/3.1- 5.8" "25–525mm" "AA batteries" 16mp ccd - You will be able to locate a whole bunch of cameras that share the core platform (optics, image sensor and power management) with only minor cosmetic (different cases with similar button placement) / firmware modifications (e.g. different scene mode / operation modes) / spec variations (e.g. LCD resolution / mode dials). As far as I can count, following cameras more or less share the same platform and are likely to origin from the same OEM (likely to be Foxconn):

      BenQ GH600 : http://www.benq.com/product/dsc/gh600/specifications
Nikon L310 (probably a variation of the same camera with a 14MP CCD instead of 16MP) : http://www.nikon.com.au/en_AU/product_details.page?DCRPath=t…
      Panasonic Lumix LZ20 : http://panasonic.net/avc/lumix/compact/lz20/index.html
      Olympus SP-620UZ : http://www.olympus-europa.com/site/en/c/cameras/digital_came…

You'll notice that all of them shares the same 4.5-94.5mm (25-525mm equivalent) f/3.1-5.8 lens with 12 lenses in 9 groups, same 1cm super macro mode, same CCD shift image stablisation, same 3 inch LCD (resolution can vary), same 720p video capability and the list goes on.

  • +1

A bulky point and shoot camera with mixed online reviews. And AA batteries. Other then the optical zoom, no point in buying this camera.

    With DS gift card = $90 :)

Saw this early today on JBHiFi website
    Canon 14.1MP Sx150 Digital Camera $98 was $198
    http://www.jbhifi.com.au/photo/digital-cameras/canon/14-1mp-…

But I will stick with my new Samsung camera which I bought early this week even though i haven't opened it yet :)
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/89079

    • +2

All 3 cameras use CCD sensors. All 3 can do 720p video (hard to do 1080p on CCD).

I am normally biased towards Canon P&S cameras. CHDK is supported on Canon SX150.

      • I'm with Netsurfer. For P&S cameras go Canon.

    • Thanks OP, I can't resist the price, will buy one tomorrow with DS gift card which I bought on ebay last week

FYI just to show you this is 26x zoom with the Samsung when the wind was blowing the plant around a bit. (I was holding the camera, no tripod or anything)

also here is some money that i took a pic of with a little bit of zoom.. (View the picture at full size)

    http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/4216/sam0022j.jpg

MUCH better than my phone camera so im happy..

    • +1

Could we reasonably expect the Sony to perform comparably? I know zero about cameras, just after something that's better than my phone too :)

Also, did anybody find anything cheap (ie 1$) to take the order over 100$ for free shipping, all I found was USB sticks and I don't need any more.

  • +1

    video recording is mono..

the canon and the sammy are stereo.. just throwing it out there

the sammy deal was heaps good!

  • +2

    bought one. thanks op.

  • +1

    Got one, thanks OP.

  • This is still available, plenty of stores in VIC with Stock or $4.95 postage (for VIC postcodes)

  • Camera is still going for $99.
I just purchased one. The store did not have any on display as the salesperson advised me that they kept them out the back because they have 'limited' display space.
Camera LCD display has a few dead pixels ='( but for $ 99 I can't complain too much I guess

    • +1

No reason why you can't take it back and swap it for a perfect one….

      • Store swapped it without any hassles. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
I might be fussy, but the replacement camera has one dead pixel on the bottom right of the screen which I can live with. As opposed to the original camera which had numerous dead pixels on the centre of the screen (very annoying).

  • Purchased one today to use at work. Force it onto ISO80 and image quality isn't to bad. Compare it to my (ozbargained) Pentax Q and its pretty awful. Good zoom though for $99.

  • Does Office Works Price match?

  • The price is very good.
I got one for my parents. I use a Nikon DSLR - so my comments may be a little biased ;)

Compared to a DSLR, it's D.O.G. slow. Compared to an iPhone, it's much faster :)
The image quality left a little to be desired - it's fairly grainy (I was surprised at how grainy the images are… My 10 megapixel leaves this 16 megapixel for dead - it's really night and day).

Having said that, it's fairly light, has a good zoom range and is easy to use - except for the lack of a view finder. If you're in bright sun (as we were when we were testing it) - it's impossible to see what you're shooting on the LCD screen at the back.

For the price, this is a fantastic camera - just don't expect the image quality to be great. Honestly, I'd even consider reducing the size (quality?) of the recorded photo, mainly because the sensor isn't up-to-scratch to support 16 megapixels. You'd be wasting a fair amount of extra space on "fuzziness" in the photos. One parallel of this is "imagine recording your VHS tapes onto BluRay … they may be marginally better than recording them to DVD, but it would be so marginal, you'd be hard pressed to notice… The BluRay would also use 10 gigabytes rather than 4.5 gigabytes".

In all, two thumbs up for the price.

    • I agree with all of that. I too was surprised at the grainyness. I might experiment with some of the resolution options.

      I will add:
      - zooming is very coarse eg jumps from 1.2x to 1.4x with no 1.3x (14 zoom levels between 1 and 21)
      - on maximum zoom, it seems the image stabilizer cant keep up with the shutter speed (or the shutter speed is to low) because some of these seem out of focus.

But hey, it's $99 and for that it's pretty damn good.
