I'm guessing the 26mm didn't sell well then. It was always such an odd item to have a budget, manual focus lens for an expensive camera. Seems like a try once then put back in the box for the next 3 years kind of lens.

On the flip side, the 20-60mm is such a great standard lens and for $2k this isn't a bad bit of kit!

    • +1

don't mind the MF, or the focal length it's the fixed F8 that's really the issue here.

Nikon made a slightly larger 26mm and that's F2.8 and has AF. idk why Panasonic couldn't spend a bit more time to engineer a proper, faster AF lens.

      • Yep my thoughts as well. What were they thinking with an F8 lens?

        • +1

Some speculate it’s purely for marketing purpose, like oh look how small the S9 is*

          • when paired with a disposable constant aperture F8 MF lens
          • @dukeGR4: This. It would blunt any "it's so tiny!" promos if they had to show photos of the s9 with more useable FF lenses, so they've made the smallest possible lens for product shots.

I guess you can mount an argument it's the best possible lens for covert/discrete filming, because of its small size, and for some use cases this might be more important than getting shallow depth of field or low light performance. I suspect low sales are showing there aren't many such cases.

  • JB hi-fi listed the promotion end as 31 December 2024 but Panasonic listed it as 28 February December 2025.

If I have to guess, Panasonic extended it and make a typo with December.

    Dang das cheap

  • +1

    Where's the viewfinder?

    • +2

maybe next gen, but still the cheapest way to get into full frame atm.

  • How is this va that ridiculous Fuji that is always out of stock

    • +8

it's a deliberate move by Fuji to limit supply. how do you think they could sell APS-C cameras at more than full frame prices without leveraging the notion of scarcity.

even an entry-level camera like the XT-50 is close to 2k. a glorified point and shoot (X100VI) is close to 3k retail.

      • +1

        Good take!

      • +1

I paid $1499 for an xm5 kit just so I could see what the fuss was all about after not being in Fuji ecosystem since x100s - look, Ngl I’m pretty disappointed coming from my usual g9/a7iii (especially the AF) - I will say the combo is easily the smallest/lightest package vs performance that I have though.

        • Thats really where Fuji have the edge. Just great small discreet bodies and most of the lenses are tiny too. I also would have picked up the Xm5 if it had a viewfinder (my eyes can't do just a rear screen ..)

          • +1

@OzViper: X-E4 is your closest bet with interchangeable lens and viewfinder. Let's hope the leaks are right and there's an X-E5 coming out summer of 2025.

            • +1

@DATApush3r: better off with a used X-E2 or X-E2S for way, way cheaper used and has the sought after X-Trans II. The eyepoint is slightly longer @ 23mm which is better suited for ppl with glasses.

X-E3 is the last true X-E but has the same eyepoint as X-E4. X-Trans III is pretty good, but not as magical as X-Trans II.

              • @dukeGR4: Yeah I just meant the X-E line in general. I have an X-E3 personally.

          • @OzViper:

Just great small discreet bodies and most of the lenses are tiny too

I had the 23mm and 35mm and I find the 23mm very underwhelming, exhibits a bit of halation close up and wide open, bokeh is unappealing. 35mm is very good however, even smaller than the 23mm and sharper + shallower DoF but it's technically a 52.5mm. at mid distance, it demonstrates a bit of mechanical vignette which i like the look of.

I ended up selling both and moved to F1.4 LM WR version, worth the size difference and has very interesting bokeh.

        • +1

Fuji's known to have terrible AF lol, they recently launched a QoL Kaizen update, it's better but still not Sony good.

also, if you have the chance - consider trying out Fuji lenses with Linear Motor, they're quick on my X-Trans III body. on yours they would be even quicker.

I read that even the 56mm's mega violent stepper motor could benefit from switching to a new body.

    • Which model you talking about?

      • x100vi, which is arguably nicer than this offering if you can stretch $500 - $650 more

        • How does that compare to the T-X5?

        • X100vi been restocked in 1-3 qty at a time on Amazon every 14 days or so

  • +3

That bonus 26mm lens is going straight to landfill

    • +3

It makes for an alright body cap!

  • IMO the recent $2k A7cii is a much better deal. too bad I don't need another dust-collecting camera.

    • I bought a7cii at 2500 . Where did u get at 2k ?

    • +3

Why is the a7cii a much better deal?

One pretty big plus of the S9 that the Sony lacks is the ability to utilize the entire sensor area (Open Gate), as you can output different aspect ratios, such as 16:9, letterbox, square, and vertical, from a single take. Which saves a lot of time at all stages of capturing and editing content.

just as an example- The ability with this deal to pay with (10% off) discounted GCs that regularly go on sale and some may already have purchased ready for a camera deal to pop up..

Combined with also being able to sell the 2x lenses, which could come to around a $500-$700+ cost difference compared to the recent a7cii deal

That is conservatively selling the 26mm for around $100 & the kit lens around $200-$300.

To me that is a pretty significant price difference to add to the equation..

      • To each their own, but for me personally, just to name a few, the lack of an EVF, mechanical shutter, and flash on the S9 is a dealbreaker. Open Gate is convenient, but it doesn’t make up for the other missing features as a camera.

        • I have found it difficult going from a relatively good EVF to something like this with lower magnification, and a grainy image due to the EVF’s limited ability to resolve fine details.

It ruins the experience, if I am going to rely on an EVF, especially for extended periods.. Most recently I did it with the Canon R8 which has a comparable EVF..

It is worth noting the a7c2 does not have a fully mechanical shutter..

IMO, If both of those features were important, at 2k+ I would consider other options.. YMMV

          • +1

@Thayer: But as you said you came from a good EVF. I think if you downgrade from anything you will notice the difference. I got used to the original A7C's paltry 0.59x. There are plenty of times where a back panel LCD is so much worse due to light hitting the screen where it is impossible to see anything - smaller, grainier EVF at least works in this scenario and does the job. Plus I just much prefer to compose a shot through the EVF.

      • +2

Idk how asking a question as to why the a7c2 is much better deal gets me a neg.. I know there's plenty of new a7c2 owners on here and I am not saying the a7c2 is a bad camera..

Pointing out a big plus for the S9, which benefits the original intended purposes that the S9 was created for, to create quick content turn around..

Having to have an extra vertical rig setup, capturing & managing 2x lots of footage is a hassle. Open Gate capture makes content creation over multiple platforms a lot easier..

The S9 body ends up being around 1.3k-1.5k if utilising discounted GCs & selling or factoring in the lenses..

That is a really cheap FF camera with some nice features, good AF, dedicated Real-Time LUT button, IBIS, Log recording, Dual Native ISO, 6k Open Gate.

Using the S9 for selfie-style vlogging or on a gimbal, the EVF doesn't matter..

        Different tools for different jobs

        • Sorry I think that was my fault. I accidentally upvoted on yours (was not meaning to vote either way) so when I tried to remove the vote it made it negative. I can't seem to change it back now. Feel free to downvote mine as reparations.

And I agree different tools for different jobs. But If I was entering Panasonic system and was into video I would have gone with the past Panasonic LUMIX S5II deals at the price.

Your arguments are valid, and I can imagine for the right audience the open gate feature is useful making this a decent deal. But Sony has it's own tricks such as the new AI auto framing which can be very useful for vloggers. In the end as to your question "Why is the a7cii a much better deal?" -the a7c2 is the more versatile camera for most people - but as you point out they are not the same price point anyway.

    • I'm gutted I missed that deal. Trying to find a good price on the A7CR at the moment.

  • Sorry, is this a good idea or not really? My wife wants a camera

    • depends what you want from a camera - this is a small full frame unit that comes with a great kit lens being the 20-60mm. if your in to photography then this is a great entry point minus no electronic view finder and weather sealing. if your taking photos for friend posting on social media or to swipe on your phone, dont bother :)

      • My wife wants it for photo taking… says iphone quality to her standard so its an ok deal to buy?

        • More than enough. Iphone quality? The chip in Iphone is much smaller…the image looks okay in Iphone because of software processing.

S9 is a full frame camera.
But if you don't know how to use a camera or not willng to learn it, using Iphone could be better.

          • @Edwardrw: So i just buy this camera plus a sd card and we are on our way? I assume theres instruction manual on how to use it etc

            • @dahe88: best manual is days in hand with cameras - takes awhile to master.
also if your planing on doing any editing work you will need a reasonably good computer and possible photo editing software.

              • @BiotBargin: My wife just wants to take photos and thats it.. i did say just stick to iphones but she insists getting one cos she saw someone else use one at my kids preschool graduation 🤦‍♂️

                • +1

@dahe88: If she doesn't understand stuff like exposure, ISO, shutter speed etc, then there's no need to buy this camera. But if she's willing to learn, a full frame camera can be kept for 10 years or longer and she will have more than enough time to master it.

                  • @SeanConnery: I’d say 90% of people don’t need a prosumer camera like this. It’s not just about knowing exposure and shutter speed—you’ll also need to learn tools like Photoshop, Lightroom, or Final Cut if you want to create decent videos, which is where this camera truly excels.

                    • @OzHan: From what I read this thing only does 10mins of 4K footage

                      • @CalmLemons: 15 minutes, for me its plenty. Its 18GB in size on high bit rate.

                • @dahe88: be better off with an Panasonic FZ80 or a Canon Powershot point and shot type camera.

                • @dahe88: maybe consider getting a Ricoh GR. can fit in pockets.

It's a prime lens so you cannot zoom, but it delivers very good looking photos - rich and vibrant.

There are two versions, one with the 28mm the other 40mm. 28mm is better for general photography, but latter is easier to compose.

                • @dahe88: Was it this specific one? If so, then you can get it for her and neither of you will have any remorse because it's the exact one she saw. Assuming you're happy to pay for that privilege.

If you saw just a "fancy camera" that just looked a bit like this, then you might be better off with an APS-C (a smaller sensor inside the camera than this full frame S9) camera like the Sony 6700 instead, as they are a lot more compact (especially the lenses - because of the smaller sensor size) and the look will still be quite different to an iPhone. This S9 isn't aimed so much at amateurs just trying to capture their kids (and who will value simplicity and compatness) as content creators who need/want to be able to get their photos and video up ASAP, and are hoping to commercialise it, even if they have to carry hefty lenses.

        • It's plenty of camera but for a beginner it's a bit too focused IMO. Let her do her research and see where she lands in terms of what she wants out of a camera. It's a big world.

          • +1

            @GUYANDSON:

It's plenty of camera but for a beginner it's a bit too focused IMO

funnily enough this camera's marketed for beginners and also content creators that don't need pro features or prefer an easy work flow (LUT).

not having EVF can be a plus - means smaller, and lighter.

paired with 18-40 i'd say it's a darn good combo if you got the cash for it.

  • +1

How is this compared to the Fujifilm X M5?

    • +1

Both cameras target the same kind of user. The Panasonic is full frame sensor which is bigger. This helps with aspects of image quality (low light, bokeh). But day time shots you will not really notice a difference. The M5 is lighter and smaller. The Panasonic kit lens is a great focal length. I think an important factor is whether this is a camera where you just stick with the kit lens or if you will be purchasing more lenses to do other things (telephoto, portrait, wide angle etc.) Fuji will have smaller lenses and probably cheaper lenses. But if you just want to stick to a general purpose lens only then I think the Panasonic is the better deal.

      • Fuji will have smaller lenses and probably cheaper lenses. But if you just want to stick to a general purpose lens only then I think the Panasonic is the better deal.

not necessarily if you take equivalent aperture into consideration. Fujilux are F2 equivalent in terms of DoF and cost about 1k, whereas Lumix F1.8 could be had for a bit less than that. and unlike the Fujilux, all Lumixes are optimised for video and are built more rugged.

Sigma Art series are also cheap, most F1.4 DG DN could be had for 1k~

in terms of size, Sigma's contemporary line have small lenses too, but they're not cheap for the performance, almost as much as Art. But the build quality on contemporary is better than Art, surpassing that even of Leica's own M-mount, minus the WR.

the 45mm F2.8 suits the S9 imo, could be bought used for about 400-450.

  • i can see why this is on sale everywhere. lacks a lot of features.

    • +1

what do you believe its lacking ? cameras are all designed and marketed to a target audience in the consumer end. S9 for what it does is pretty awesome, just not for everyones liking.

    • +1

It's designed for content creators, simple things for simple people
