Goodbye for Now, OzBargain

I'm off to the US as my wife and I have found opportunities for work there. We've sold and stored all of our stuff over the past months, and although it was an initially emotional process, I found myself eventually desensitised. But saying goodbye to family, friends and communities is next level uprooting. So this is my heartfelt farewell to the OzBargain community that has basically helped me become who I am, whatever that is.

I'll just list down the things I'm thankful for:

  • Thank you for allowing me to stay on the site even after being caught for sockpuppeting (not proud of it).
  • Thank you everyone for helping me land a job once upon a time. You guys participated in a consumer survey which I used to analyse and present insights to my interviewer, which they loved.
  • Thank you for inviting me and my wife to your birthday parties for the past 3 years. I met so many smart and nice people including Scotty, and every single time after a party I would feel so proud and grateful that you are my people.
  • Thank you to the person that gave me 2 lounge passes for free, even when I was offering to pay. I made the most out of the free food and drinks, OzBargain style.
  • Thank you for the countless freebies and sharing amazing deals. You guys have saved me thousands, especially from the credit card, mortgage, and refinancing deals.
  • Thank you for being a constant in my day-to-day. I would literally go on OzBargain whenever I have time. I will miss this a lot.

Hope this wasn't too cheesy, but I'm not sure when I will be back to Australia and had to get it off my chest. Thank you again!

@Gervais fanboy: It is much much worse over there. The social media sites are cozying up to Trump and they have a lot more information on people than anyone out here would have.. Your comment has no basis or fact or any logic to back it up. Of course it will be a bigger issue over there. So I make a comment and you take it off on a tangent then accuse me of a tangent. Certainly seen that tactic before. You certainly aren’t content to let me be me because you feel the need to insert yourself in by making illogical comments with no proof at all.

                    • +1

@Gervais fanboy: I think the concern is the odds of the government doing something due to peoples comments on social media is greater in the US than here.

                      • @Chandler: Idk man, their 1st amendment is way more encompassing, it’s often limited by the tech companies worldwide but atleast not by the government.

If you’re talking about the information suppression during Covid, that happened almost everywhere?

                        • +1

@Gervais fanboy: The first amendment is rubbish. What a load of BS and you are ducking the point. The tech bros and the US are working hand in glove to pass on people’s private data. They did it with Cambridge Analytica and they will be brazenly doing it now. If you are in these social media sites then your details and comments will be passed to whoever is left in government to see it. If you are passing the border I would be very careful about what your social media says. Free speech is only acceptable if you align with the government. They don’t need a reason to send you home. Mostly we don’t give a shit out here unless you are proposing to be violent or criminal.

            • @Wiadro: Well that is something to think about. Just as well I don’t intend to visit the USA anytime soon. Now I’m wondering about the strength of the privacy we get on this site. However, I don’t see the guys who run this site willingly giving up any identifying information. The social media sites have posting listed under people’s names.

              • @try2bhelpful: You can’t find me on Google

                • +1

@Wiadro: I have no presence on social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc. I do have WhatsApp but it is very vanilla postings. I don’t show up with Google either but that is just a public facing thing. The social media sites have lots of private information and your posting history. Right now I’m very happy I never got into using any of these sites.

                  • @try2bhelpful: Have you looked into Signal as an alternative to WhatsApp? Open source and end-to-end encryption.

                    • @youfnc: I have Signal as well. Will look at comparison, thanks.

      Good to know!

  • Start up a USBargain website and buy out ozbargain.

    • +3

      How would you pronounce that.

      You Ess bargain
      Usssbargain
      USB argain
      Usbar Gain

      • +1

Best would be "Red White Bargain"

      • It would probably just be Bargain.com (domain is available). Americans just assume stuff is for them unless explicitly stated otherwise.

        • True, although I feel like they would also say Deal instead of Bargain.

    • scotty won't approve

    • May be usbargain :)

  • +3

When we travelled through Europe last year I still checked Ozbargain regularly. There is a lot of online stuff that would probably work with shipping to the US.

    • Interesting thought

  • I used to go to dealcatcher.com back in the day, it’s not the same as ozbargain

    • +1

I only had Slickdeals in mind but I'll check out Dealcatcher

  • +2

    Good luck!

I'm keen on the sockpuppeting story!

    • Haha I'm too ashamed!

  • +3

Best of luck living in Germany in the 1930s.

    • Ja

    • Username checks out

  • Good Luck mate! I feel you. Ozbargain is a community, friend, philosopher and guide! I am in similar situation, relocated to India a couple of years ago, but travel to Oz very frequently. I keep looking at Ozbargain deals, buy great ones, shipping them to friends place and carry them back with me to India. You can and are still be a part of this great community.

    • Much love!!!

  • +3

Op please send us pictures of your lifted F150 with interior mounted AR15

    • Lol

NFI who you are but good luck mate. I wouldn't turn down going to the US. That place is popping off now and I'd love to be front row eating popcorn surfing on Ozbargain.

    • Make sure to get free refills

  • +2

    facebook renamed itself to ozbargain?

    • If it is Facebook then time to get off it.

    • Ha

  • Hey OP!
I have some questions, as lately thinking about hat!
    - What made you to leave Australia and go to US?
    - What visa do we need to work there?
    - How can we find work there?

    Thanks in Advance!

    • +1
      • More job opportunities in tech, sceneries and adventures
      • E3 is the most straightforward one for Australian citizens
      • Internal transfers probably have the least friction but no harm trying to apply directly

      Good luck!

  • Cheers

    • And to you

For people who are interested in privacy
“When crossing the US border, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers may review your social media profiles if they suspect potential security concerns, meaning they can ask for your social media handles and may access publicly available information on your accounts to verify your identity and travel intentions; this practice is primarily used to screen individuals for potential threats and is becoming increasingly common in the immigration process”.

I will bet you the tech bros have also passed to the Government whatever private information you have on your profiles as well. Look at Cambridge Analytica to see how this cozy arrangement has worked in the past. Personally I’m avoiding travelling in the US for the foreseeable future and having almost no presence on foreign run social media sites. Never assume any information you provide them with is private.

  • New hire in a Federal government department?

    • DOGE to the moon

    • +1

Just keep saying MAGA continuously. Although the administration DEI hires are mostly billionaires.

  • Wish you the best!

  • what do you guys do for work?

  • Good luck, I generated this AI song about Ozbargain so you can remember how much you miss it. A little inaccurate and harsh on Ozbargain also, but that's what it came up with!

  • @OzB4Me I am sure you're familiar with slickdeals.net but the discussion there is not as robust as ozbargain and don't see active participation or feeling of belonging to a community like ozbargain

    • Yeah it's gone downhill a lot.

  • Good to see something positive on the internet for a change. Good luck.

  • +1

Please come back in 6 months and give a review.
I'm wanting to pull the trigger and get over but not sure yet, still lots to look into…

    • There's only one way to find out for sure, and it's to go yourself. Holidays isn't the same as living there. Every state is different in the US, as is every city within those states (lots of similarities of course).

Most people aren't eligible to live there, unless you've got some work option, plus a few other special case scenarios.

      • Yeah, not too keen on a limited 1-2 year holiday

  • Donald Trump we love you so much we are coming to live with you! You will be in our face all day and all night everywhere we go but we love it that's why we are moving to live in America!

    • You're welcome my child

  • Embrace America, home of the brave, land of the free.

You are allowed to defend your family and home legally over there.

    • haha, here it's just get broken into, stabbed by 14-16 year old, end up dying, hospital, trauma etc and they get out on bail the next day

    • The trouble is so can your neighbours. Don’t think about going over for that cup of sugar, they will shoot you through the door. Jim Jeffries does the best take down of America’s gun culture I’ve ever seen. People should look it up in You Tube. They should also look at the statistics on gun deaths over there. If there is a gun in the house you are much more likely to commit suicide with it than shoot an intruder. Land of the paranoid rather than land of the free. The statistics don’t lie.

  • What's sockpuppeting?

  • +1

Don't forget to buy a Ar15 and a shotgun. Nothing screams more freedom!

  • Best wish and hope you stay well in US.

  • He'll be back, they all said goodbyes but in the end they will return. Ozbargain is addictive, is a drug you can't refuse.
