OzBargain Advice for Riding Out The (Hypothetical) Trump Global Recession?

Hi Ozbargainers

With the looming threat of indiscriminate tariffs against countries, ally and foe, there seems to be growing concern about the potential for a significant economic downturn directly related to decisions being made in the White House right now.

As we head toward what may be the second economic slump in only the past four years, and potentially the second global financial crisis within 20 years years, I had hoped Ozbargainers with experience could share how best to survive - and perhaps profit - through a hypothetical 2025 economic downturn.

I have already stocked up on beans and powdered milk, and sold the dog to ensure our provisions last at least an extra month. I have added several editions of Marx and Bukarin to my Kindle in case of a potential anarchist society taking over the other side, plus I have downloaded the Fallout TV series as a guide for any apocalyptic deterioration.

Any suggestions for what I might be missing would be greatly appreciated.

Tariffs? Minor issue. The orange rugged Grand Wizard is happily resurrecting Apartheid. Our country is halfway there through our immigration choices, and now Dutton is using a $5M bait to lure the rich white beneficiaries ( who aren't here yet),. Trump has asked Nazi saluting Musk to dust off the model and start all over again.

How Dutton can faux whinge about anti semitism and keep a straight face, in the face of confected reality that he is dog whistling about, shows how brain dead the population is.

      No, we are not.

How Dutton can faux whinge about anti semitism and keep a straight face, in the face of confected reality that he is dog whistling about

It's collective shame for our country when a community has to hide their faith & identity because of events happening half way across the globe. Places of worship and childcare centres are fire bombed and vandalised. Property and cars of a community are target because of their religion and faith. Current Labour leadership is absolutely responsible for this and they are the ones who were dog whistling and have let it get to this point.

      • +1

        Your bin's full.

    • Which specific immigration choices are you referring to? Are you referring to immigration choices such as the free trade deal with India (ECTA) that has seen India overtake China as Australia's top source of overseas migrant arrivals? India, China and Phillipines have been Australias top 3 source of immigration for years.

Hard to know if the tariffs will actually have such an effect because the mainstream media has had such an influence on peoples thoughts and decision making, but the party opposed to the liking of the mainstream media has won. It's hard to know what to believe at this point. And no you can't just expect half the world population to be informed about complex taxes hence why we entrust politicians to make important decisions on our behalf. I'm not going to pretend that I know a lot about the intricacies of these tariffs. I've always been quite neutral when it comes to politics but with all the obvious bias against Trump over the last decade it's hard to know what's real and an actual threat these days.

    • And no you can't just expect half the world population to be informed about complex taxes hence why we entrust politicians to make important decisions on our behalf

if you get someone like dutton running australia, 100% you will see a recession, he is very much out of tune like trump

    • ALP and LNP same thing.

LNP keeps on cutting taxes and removing government services to try to juice the economy.

ALP keeps on raising taxes and spending it on the private sector to juice the economy.

Pretty much the same thing. Works until it doesn't. It is pass the parcel and bad luck when the music stops.

      • +4

LNP is the one also selling roads and companies owned by the government to juice the economy, once you do this, there is no turning back and getting back the company or road

        • ALP also the one giving multi million dollar upgrades on the road that so happens to lead to ALP PM's holiday home.

Both the same. If you are arguing for one or the other it is just a joke.

But you know buying a house that was just so happened to be on a road that is being upgraded. Either you had inside information or you pulled the trigger on the upgrade. It is Nancy Pelosi level stuff.

Road and a house on the same road. I mean other stuff you can make up but it is two tangible piece right there for you to read which ever way you think: either you knew it was getting upgraded or someone told you (real estate agent?) it was going to be.

Nobody buys a $4m property like an uneducated clown. You could sign the contract hours after the announcement (and see if the seller would pull out on you) but you know that would just be too transparent

        • Also farms and water supply to global megacorps in Asia…

You did your gotcha thing by referencing that ‘announcement’. I only made the point that announcements mean nothing, whether it’s Canada that announces it or whether it’s Trump.

            • +3

@Gervais fanboy: Yes very 'emotional' argument, in comparison to yours of how can Canada be trusted when not all their plans have been realised.

Only that announcements don’t mean anything,
For example - their housing announcement meant nothing, actually meant the opposite.

    • +8

Neither of them folded. While Trump is treating it as a win it appears it was Trump that folded. He got Mexico to agree to the same deal they already had under Biden and with Canada it is a "lets work it out without Tariffs". It seems the only one to fold was Trump.

      • +3

same deal they already had under Biden

It’s not about what’s on paper, it’s about the enforcement of it.

Biden ran a country with open borders for 4 years. 10+ million unvetted illegals migrants snuck in, Mexico and the USA not only chose not to enforce their basics laws, they actually facilitated the invasion.
It’s different now because Trump’s now actually enforcing these laws and have finally managed to get Mexico to do their bit.

      • -2

Hahahahahahahahaahahahaha baby bro said Trump folded.

Jesus Christ, very obvious who folded baby brother.

Read this and come back again who folded. 🤣🤣🤣

        https://ibb.co/Qvm25pW1

        • +6

Yep Trump folded fast. I think he saw the massive backlash he was facing so he took the crappy offers on the table even though they were no better than what he already had.

Just like the Mexico border deal with the 10,000 surge the 1.3b was actually announced last year. So basically the only thing Trump got was a new token fetanyl border Tsar. Perhaps he should go and actually read the book "the art of the deal", he might learn something as the ghost writer obviously was far more skilled than Trump.

Edit: really 2 possibilities here, Trump was fooled by Canada and Mexico (entirely possible) or he was just looking for an easy out. Either way, as you so aptly demonstrated, his fans won't actually look at the details and just assume Trump won rather than folding.

Trump built his wealth through real estate, and his family holds a significant portfolio of properties. There’s absolutely no chance he would take actions to drive real estate prices down or limit profit opportunities. Interest rates will drop significantly as the U.S. government reduces spending (DOGE) and controls inflation. Volatility in the market creates the perfect environment for making money. IMHO

  • +4

At the end of the day you can only control the things that are immediately around you. Spiralling down rabbit holes as you scheme about overseas government rhetoric just ends in doom.

I have no grasp on geo-politics or micro/macroeconomics, but the vibe is things might get more expensive.

Food: Learn to cook. Learn to use cheap ingredients, in season, rather than relying on the same ingredients. A diehard ozbargainer will hunt for reduce sale supermarket chicken breast/beef mince but it's not sustainable to rely on that. Cheaper cuts like flank/skirt steak, lamb/pork shoulder, chicken bones for soup is sustainable in the long run given they can be easily attained for <$10/kg. Also learning how to use legumes and beans is going to be great as again, great source of protein, you can buy it dried and very easily attainable.

Petrol: Drive less, walk more, stay local if possible. Plan ahead

Most importantly, help out your neighbor. There's probably someone else doing worse than you. Help out if you have the means to or at least reach out.

  • get smart and sell items under $800 to US residents for cheaper than they can get it for while adding some profit for yourself. Our dollar is so low, everything here is cheap for them.

    • Unfortunately we import most of our stuff so it's often cheaper to buy it from the US and pay shipping here, even at current exchange rates. If you know of anything Australian made that the yanks want, let me know.

  • +1

My US stocks are up about 37% since the election, so I guess just buy US stocks?

    • +2

I reckon this would be the time to sell them.

      Also, great investment btw.

      • Absolutely. The smart money said there would be a mini boom then a crash. The boom was unfounded hope the crash will be when America gets buyer remorse. When Trump’s bigly talking hits the reality he is making things worse.

        • -1

No, the boom was based on speculations around Trump removing red tape and removing the excess bureaucratic regulations, which he already has.
Also, his stance on oil digs etc.

All of those gains will probably be undone and more coz of the Tariff battle wit China. (There’s only one winner there imo).
So yes, we have found common ground in - tough days ahead probably for the American economy. I could be wrong Ofcos,

          • @Gervais fanboy: We could get into a whole other discussion on the false flag of “red tape” but Trump has thrown a very dead cat amongst the pigeons. He will cause the world a lot of unnecessary pain. The people that will come off worst will be from the USA. They are trashing their reliability as a trading partner. That is not a good thing for anyone.

We could be wrong but China has a history of being very patient.
There is a saying apocryphally attributed to Napoleon in response to a suggestion to force China open.
“Let China sleep, for when she awakes, the world will tremble”.

However he is meant to have said
“It would be the worst thing you have done for a number of years, to go to war with an immense empire like China, and possessing so many resources. You would doubtless, at first succeed, take what vessels they have, and destroy their trade; but you would teach them their own strength. They would be compelled to adopt measures to defend themselves against you“

If you look at things like the Boxer rebellion the West did not learn that lesson.

Trump trashed democracy by refusing to accept the result of a just and fair election. Then he incited a mob to attack the Capitol. The GOP refused to hold him to account for this. The fact Americans then voted this clown back in shows exactly what Americans think about true democracy and good governance. Frankly they are about to reap what they have sown which will be diminishing America’s standing in the world.

China is just sitting back going “bring it on baby” because it makes them look sane and trustworthy. Most of the trading partners of the USA will look to reduce their reliance on the USA. A lot of people are boycotting “made in the USA” products. Australians will wonder if we should go back to the French rather than AUKUS. Shaking things up with no end point plan might be “entertaining” but it isn’t good governance.

I have very little exposure to American stocks apart from my Super so I will probably just try to ride this out. However, if I had exposure to some of the more volatile American stocks I would be seriously considering my position at the moment.

When I was younger we used to go in the Greencard lottery. We even lived in the US for a while. Absolutely wouldn’t do it now.

    • Then he incited a mob to attack the Capitol.

Anyone who did show up with weapons does deserve to get arrested and deal with those consequences but an insurrection it was not.

Maybe ask AoC about her crazy take on what was going on and what she felt was going to happen to her and the part where she was lying as she wasn't even nearby when all of this went down.

Its amazing the amount of footage not released, or the stuff that is that shows participants of the tour walking off and showing police ID and then exiting elsewhere after trying to stir up trouble.

"Trump trashed democracy by refusing to accept the result of a just and fair election" - Ha!

I will start you off lite with 6 minutes of Hillary Clinton claiming the election was stolen from her,

Now you can move on to 12 minutes of Hillary Clinton claiming denying election results.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XX2Ejqjz6TA

I recall a 25min+ version but YT has a way of hiding some of these things from top results or maybe things get DCMA'd as its a bad look.

But yeah its just the orange man (bad) who is trashing democracy, if we're honest its been trash for a very long time, stop pretending this isn't the case.

"China is just sitting back going “bring it on baby” because it makes them look sane and trustworthy." - Ain't nobody buying that propaganda that has half a clue, but this is pro CCP OzB.

      • +2

Clinton conceded the 2016 election. By definition she accepted the result of the election.

Trump has still yet to concede the 2020 election. The majority of the republican party back Trump on this. Trump was also indicted for conspiring to overturn the 2020 election. There's a recording of him pressuring the Georgia Secretary of State to repeatedly "find" him 12,000 votes to overturn the election. Why don't you look at actual actions?

        • She conceded but continued to say it was stolen and denying the results on USA TV up until the election in Nov last year.
He never conceded and that's unsportsmanlike behavior for sure, I don't disagree.
While you're looking at the actual actions you can look in to how the most uninspiring presidential candidate the USA has seen in decades got more votes than every other president in history?
Biden taking home the popular vote with 11,784,985 more votes than Obama got in his first term, 15,367,706 more than Obama's second term.
I guess Biden's handlers asked around to find those votes without being on video.
Maybe look in to all those angry Pelosi videos where she's basically making sure J6 could be as bad as possible knowing people were going to be there and then standing people down so that things would escalate?
The govt aren't there or their own people, that should be clear by now.

          • @91rs: Can you provide a single full context clip of her denying the election. Also you didn't reply to Trump being indicted for actively trying to steal the election.

Looks like your mind is already rotten with political crap, not much you can do there.

Your only hope is to unsubscribe from mainstream media and live your life.

    • can't fix 8 years of "trump bad" being drilled into their heads, unfortunately.

all the anti trump crowd are too deep in they aren't capable of coming back to reality, it's a cult

Why are we giving a shit about America' tomfoolery again? Don't we have our own issues to worry about?

    • +1

      Exactly.

People just parrot whatever the news tells them, which is basically, what everyone does:
"…and there I was, repeating everything the news tells me".

Mainstream media is a giant botnet controlling apparatus for mainstream populations, infected by the news rootkit.

Trump, Hollywood Palisades, Trump DOGE, Corpse Flower, Trump: 2 Genders, Caravan Explosives, Ye naked Bianca Censori, Trump Tariffs.

Unless OzB threads like these, are the psy-op before #OzVotes2025

    • But seems Australia audiences can’t have enough , they have American section on 24 tv news for the boring sheep

seems Australia audiences can’t have enough

What's even more concerning, is that the language 'planted' in our heads, is the language everyone repeats.

The words chosen, … end up becoming the thoughts chosen.
        Control language = control thought

        People were born into this.

If people come up with their own language, ie. come up with their own thoughts, instead of repeating something.

When everyone is thinking the same, then nobody is thinking at all.

The Trump apologists are going to run out of places to hide in the next few weeks. I can’t wait to see them tying themselves in knots trying to continue to defend him. Me, I’m not defending either China or America and I wouldn’t live in either country. I’m just saying don’t trust either of them. I’m not sure why people try to twist my words but that is my point. I’ve been reading the papers today and what Trump is doing is extraordinary. He is basically bypassing Government and the rule of law. The thing is I really do believe in democracy, and the rule of good and just governance. Apparently some people here, not so much. WCON.

"The Trump apologists are going to run out of places to hide in the next few weeks."
      Spot on.
Ditto for Trump. The pushback, division, downstream self created violence, economic impacts etc. He can't blame anybody else any longer. He's the wrecking ball now. It's all his shit.I'd love to see an Ozbargain poll 'who supports Trump and /or Musk", so we can see how how proud the local proud boys really are when exposed to the impacts they barracked for take hold.Until then the audience has noted who the hecklers are.

I’m not sure why people try to twist my words but that is my point.

Lets make it fun. Define specifically what Trump apologists will run out of places to hide from.

Eg, pick a marker, such as NASDAQ, that we can check back on in 3 weeks. I'm genuinely curious.

      • +1

I’m talking about them supporting how Trump is behaving. However, if you only deal in such short term periods on the market you don’t really know how it works.

        • +2

You said a few weeks before me. This entire post is about markets specifically…

You're complaining about people twisting your words but refused my invitation to pick a measurable marker for whatever you're trying to complain about.

Any suggestions for what I might be missing would be greatly appreciated.

With all my respect: stop watching/reading the news and focus on living life as it comes.

I did stop drowning with "tha news" and feel a lot freer.

Whatever happens will happen regardless of me neither knowing about the disaster nor waiting to happen.

Remember: life is full of disasters … most of them will never happen.

    • Yes,.
Apathy is indeed the warmest doona.

      • Apathy and worrying is different.

        Apathy implies knowing and ignoring.

Worrying implies knowing and arrogantly articulating a pass.

        Worrying is even warmest coat.
Thinking you'll have a saying to external "dramas" …

focus on living life as it comes

How to "focus" on living life, when #OzVotes2025 rolls into town ?

      • +1

Well that's different. It IS vital to know.

The News we get here is usually from CNN MSNBC FOX whose collective daily audience is about 500,000. USA population is about 350,000,000.
That's about one quarter of one percent opinions being represented.
What are the other 349,500,000 thinking?
Why not try the election numbers.
That tells you what the majority are thinking or maybe just believing,
