Beko - Beware before Buying

Hey there everyone!

Just a word of warning for anyone considering Beko products.

Last January, we purchased a Beko washing machine from Appliances Online. We decided to go with a Beko as it came with a 5-year warranty. Fast forward to December & the machine started to "Pause" the washing cycle…we rang Appliances online, who then suggested that we call out Sydney Appliance Services who manage warranty repairs.

Fast forward three weeks later, the technician arrives to inspect & announces the presence of cockroaches which voids the warranty….he then proceeded to quote $370 for a repair that he could not guarantee would fix the machine….wtf!!!…after the technician left, the machine wouldn't even switch on!!…so he left it in even worse condition than prior to arrival!!

I called Beko & they have been literally, the most unresponsive organisation I have ever dealt with…flat our refused to repair under warranty even though the machine failed within 12 months….I had mentioned that every other appliance in the kitchen has not suffered the same failure …. no response other than "Unfortunately as our warranty states, infestation is not covered by warranty"…. we sprayed the machine & 4 roaches exited the machine…hardly an "infestation".

Anyway, my point being that should a major appliance such as a washing machine not be built with some level of protection against the environment its supposed to be working in??

I have asked NSW fair trading to help but keen to hear anyones advice?

Cheers

Appliances Online definitely needs to add cockroach-breaking ratings to their website
i.e. this Bosch Series 6 can withstand 11 cockroaches, but this Beko is maximum 3 cockroaches only…

  • +5

I agree that they are unreliable products. Have previously purchased their washing machine through Appliances online which failed in 2 years. Managed to get a refund and upgraded to an LG instead.

    No roaches though

  • +1

With aircon split systems and gate motors we had some issues before where lizards would crawl in and get shocked and die, causing the units to need repair… I haven’t heard of cockroaches causing issue though.

    • +9

OP is in shitney though, they breed em big there
      .

      • Well it is the cockroach state!

    • Surprisingly a very common issue lizards get into the circuit board because its warm and then fries everything.

  • +4

Can you find Beko's dead pixel cockroach policy?

  • +4

With appliances, try to find ones where the electronic boards are "resin coated" …

We got stung with Daikin split systems dying within 2 years and warranty refused due to crawly infestation (since switched to Mitsubishi)!

  • +18

i think it is fair if cockroaches were the cause of the problem. they get inside everything, lay eggs, leave sh*t all over PCBs and cause electrical shorts, eat plastic, rubber etc. ditto for rats

  • +3

So don't buy Panasonic too ? any other brands ?
OP next time check the cockroach policy?

Same warranty also says that normal wear and tear is not covered… so basically nothing is covered under the warranty…

How can normal wear and tear not be covered..

      • +7

Normal wear and tear is on everything these days, why I can't claim a tshirt after I wash it 40 times and it starts to fall apart (even if it's less than 12 months old), or burn in from leaving an OLED with the same picture of JV for 24 hours a day for 6 months. Some things suffer from circumstance.

It's the difference between something that was always going to fail due to a manufacturing fault vs something that just suffers due to circumstance. Cockroaches living in your machine.

Did you ask what exactly was broken and what evidence there was that the cockroaches did it? If there was a burnt cockroach in the electronics or poop all over the board then that's definitely your problem, no matter how many cockroaches you found.

        • +3

burn in from leaving an OLED with the same picture of JV for 24 hours a day for 6 months

          Sounds like an improvement

      • +3

How do they define wear and tear?

I'm thinking that might relate to scratches and dulling of shiny finishes and ordinary wear and tear of moving bits appropriate for typical home use.

I think they might be covering themselves for situations where people absolutely use and abuse their machines by constantly over loading them (washing doonas, blankets, other heavy stuff) or using them in a more commercial application such as taking in the washing of other people as a side hustle to installing them in fair dinkum commercial laundry's or communal laundry's in facilities such as hospitals, apartments and accomodation blocks etc.

If the wear and tear equated to what is fair for say a four person family, regardless of what the warranty says, they'd be liable under ACL. ACL trumps any of their imaginary terms and conditions regardless of how hard they stamp their feet.

It's logical that the first response is to deny, regardless of the accusation. No one admits to anything far less fault until someone applies the thumbscrews and encourages them to do otherwise.

As for cockroach infestation, if you found four live ones, there were/are a bunch more laying low waiting to sneak back in when you're not watching.

Might have only found four so far, but did you confirm if it was cockroaches (or other pests/varmin) that actually caused the damage to which the failure has been attributed?

I'd argue you could have a generational cockroach community, two ant farms, a snake, 8 geckos and a bunch of spotted mice living in the hidey places in your laundry and areas accessible to your laundry (walls and drain pipes?) but if none of those caused the machine to fail, can't void the warranty.

Worked in a restaurant at the Rocks Sydney. Spotless kitchen and restaurant. Had to cover the floor drains and sink drains every night after clean up because big freakin river rats that lived in the rocks would scamper up the drain pipes during the night and poop everywhere. Some were big enough to set off the burglar alarms!

Otherwise, Need to either fumigate house or clean it a bit. Shouldn't have live cockroaches.

Even the cleanest houses will attract cockroaches, but in clean houses, you only find the dead ones. It's the scary houses where the live ones are having parties in their own little utopia.

Sometimes, big cockroaches will fly in, but if there is adequate pest control and cleanliness, they will die before they cause any damage.

      • It's pretty self-explanatory, isn't it? "Normal wear and tear"

How's that going to be covered?

      • How can normal wear and tear be covered?

What do you want your warranty to cover?

The entire point of manufacturer warranty is to cover the equipment in the event of a manufacturing defect or fault - i.e. something they did/made was incorrect/faulty/not to spec.

If the drive belt fails because you've flogged the machine, that's not on the manufacturer.
If the drive belt fails because it was part of a bad batch, was installed incorrectly, etc, that is on the manufacturer.

Electronics aren't designed to have vermin crawling in them - it tends to let the magic smoke out, hence your problem. Is that a manufacturing defect? Clearly not, as the manufacturer excluded vermin infestation from being covered under warranty, presumably as the enclosure of the product is not vermin-proof/resistant.

  • +15

Sounds like you have an infestation , that should be a priority as your washing machine is only one item they can infest .

      • +19

User error would be allowing cockroaches to infest your washing machine.

re: Beko, I've always wondered if they are strict on the 'register your appliance within 90 days' to increase warranty from 2 to 5 years.

And what does the ACCC think about it (registration) if Beko refuses to fix a 4 year old machine.

I also wonder what's the point of registration.

    • +2

Hi there, we registered the warranty on the same day we received it.

The machine packed up working on the 31st December which is less than 12 months of usage.

A few people seem to feel it's fair enough that it's not covered under warranty but I am not sure they would feel the same having to shell out for a new machine every year.

It's not as though we live in squalor…as someone mentioned..the circuitry could have a resin applied that provides some level of protection.

The technician suggesting regular spraying inside the machine, but that then voids the warranty as well… Looking at the warranty, it even says that normal wear and tear is not covered!!…so what's the point of having a 5 year warranty if it fails because you have simply using it for up to 5 year…it's a false warranty imho

      • +1

but I am not sure they would feel the same having to shell out for a new machine every year

Rather than, you know, just fixing the problem causing it?

    • What's the point of registration?

Probably nothing as far as your consumer rights go. They can only apply conditions to your warranties that enhance your consumer rights, nothing they say (even if you sign for it in a written contract witnessed by a JP, the executor of your will, Bob the Builder and their CEO) can limit or remove any consumer rights established by the ACL.

For them, I imagine it provides them with some indication of when the product made its way to the end consumer. IE: did appliance sit at John's Appliance Shop for two years before he sold it to his customer. This may give manufacturer recourse with John - did he store it properly? Do anything to cause the damage? Price it far too high causing such a slow sale?)

      • Good point.

It's also good for their database, who purchased it, what suburb, first time/returning Beko owner etc.

Purchased a Beko cooker for my family member, for the price, I was very impressed with the quality.

  • +15

You purchased the cheapest product possible, let cockroaches into it, and are then surprised that the support is poor?

    • +1

Just curious if this was Miele, would the support be any different? I would bet you’d still have to pay for that sort of thing.

      • +1

No idea, you'd have to ask Miele what their policy is on maximum number of cockroaches allowed in one of their machines.

      • +1

Miele is junk as well, only difference is the price.

        • I thought they were considered Premium. If your bar is so high, what would you call a non-junk brand then?

          • +1

@Smol Cat: They're mostly all junk now, even brands like Bosch have poor ratings. I took a chance on a Haier washing machine that is going alright.

For fridges and air conditioners I highly rate Mitsubishi Electric. It's a shame we don't get many of their other appliances here in Australia.

  • +16

flat our refused to repair under warranty

I'd fill out a complaint to the ACCC telling them that Beko refuse to fix bugs with their washing machines…

    • jv is spot on again……
….. what did Beko say when you mentioned your ACCC rights & lifetime expectation of this washing machine?

  • +12

Warranty covers product defects, not failure due to external issues (cockroaches, fire, meteor impact).

Now assuming the failure really was cockroach related and not made up to avoid responsibility, I can totally understand why they refused warranty. It would be no different if rats got into your cars engine bay and ate the wiring. That is not a warranty issue.

  • +2

If I could buy a washing machine from Amazon AU I would, but I don't think the sell any.

The next best thing is Aldi. If anything breaks, don't even bother with calling the warranty hotline for repairs/someone to come out to inspect. Just put that shit on a trolley, wheel it back into Aldi with the receipt and they'll give your money back on the spot. Then you can buy it again when it comes around every few months. Works for TVs, chest freezers, washing machines, auto retracting hose reels, lawn mowers, power tools, etc.

    • +10

Yeah I’ll just wait a few months without a washing machine to save a few bucks, absolute genius idea.

    • If you saw 4 then it is a safe bet there is a shitload more.

  • -4

Try the Australian consumer laws. There's plenty of bugs in domestic settings. It's clearly not for for purpose if a few cockroaches destroyed it.

  • I have a beko heat pump dryer. Agree, they aren't great. Our technician was fine but didn't fix the issue.
    Dryer leaving the clothes damp.

    • My beko dishwasher leaves dishes wet unless I push an extra button.
      Annoying power saving new appliances

    • +1

My Beko heat pump drier hasn't skipped a beat in the nearly three years I've owned it. Personally been very happy for the price.

  • I've had a beko dishwasher for 4 years. Hasn't skipped a beat. In fact it flat out washes better than a Bosch series 8. I probably haven't worked out the series 8 permutations for a wash setting. The beko had a simple 6 setting menu and delivers phenomenal washes. The beko is a made in Turkey machine.

    So…

In your prior post 19-24 March 2022 "Update - Samsung Refrigerator - Four Breakdowns in Three Years!" https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/689505
you seem to have experienced numerous intermittent faults with a product purchased from AppliancesOnline.com.au

In the post (above) you seem to be indicating the Washing Machine was installed and initially operating in the Kitchen and with the Samsung Fridge/Freezer the Back Panel was at fault.

    Coincidence?

Advice for the future: Buy some Boric acid powder (not Borax). It’s cheap, pretty safe and will last a really long time. Sprinkle it in a few out of the way places. Eg on a few bits of paper under cupboards or appliances. When cockroaches walk over the powder they will later die.

  • We have been using Beko for the past 8 years which we bought for a really good price. It only had one issue but frankly that was more wear and tear on our side, still Beko replaced the front door of a front load wash. I have been waiting for it to break down to upgrade to a Miele but can’t beat the bargainer in me to justify.

I had other better(!!!) brands that broke down so I would still go for a Beko if the price/perf/functionality beats out others.

  • Have had a beko for 4 years, runs perfectly. Bought on the recommendation of a washing machine technician. You need to maintain your house and appliances. I've never had cockroaches they dont like clean homes!!

  • I would go back to appliances online and say if its not fixed that it needs to be refunded.
We had a issue with the Beko stalling mid cycle. The technician came out replaced a circuit board and later said it was a chicken bone and wanted $270.
Not sure how the chicken bone affected the internal circuits so refused to pay and they ended up covering it.

Just read your fridge thread, a few points:

    1. ACL says seller has to honour warranty and dance with the manufacturer, they can't fob the customer off and get them to deal direct with manufacturer for warranties.
=> Your fridge seller was a bit naughty.
=> it is the ACL which provides your consumer rights, the ACCC just regulates and promotes competition and fair trading and regulates national infrastructure. IE=> they are not your lawyer. Can't go to ACCC to cry foul to the ref expecting individual intervention and/or resolution from them, it's not gonna happen. You need to action that and have your consumer rights enforced by the courts.

    2. Under ACL, pretty sure consumer can only force a refund for a major fault. Just because you have a few minor faults that affect the operation of the appliance, they do not accumulate to make a major fault.

For minor fault, manufacturer gets the option to repair, which in your situation, it appears they did.

    1. Warranties only ever apply to the relevant appliance. They are not responsible for any loss or damage caused by an appliance failure. That is an insurance issue. You insure what you own/what you bought from someone else, manufacturer covers whatever is the subject of the contract between you and them.

Loss and damage attributed to appliance failure (fire damage, food spoilage etc) becomes a separate civil contributory negligence claim, not a factor applicable to warranties. You need to prove their product caused your loss or damage as opposed to the loss being caused by an act or omission to which you contributed (such as hungry cockroaches).

Just because something breaks, doesn't automatically mean it's their fault, so you have to establish their fault and provide documented proof of the loss or damage which resulted from that fault.

Part of that is actually establishing what caused the fault and which party is responsible for that fault occurring. (Can't sue fridge maker if fault is caused by something/someone else - something for which the applicant has to provide proof)

Additionally, the moment you engage a repairman without the consent of the manufacturer, anything that happens after that is on you. Can't go back to manufacturer after third party intervention and expect them to exercise continuity of care whenever it is the next time the appliance fails during the warranty period or not.

The fact they did give you some money for food spoilage and the eventual demise of the appliance when they did were both gestures of goodwill and not something they were legally obliged to offer you at that time.

    • +2

Doesn't this create a "marking your own homework" situation where if only the manufacturer's authorised representatives can conduct the repairs, and by extension assess the issue and validity for warranty, where you're completely at the manufacturer's whims as to whether or not they want to resolve the issue?

Without the ability to get an independent person to determine the cause of the issue, there is a potential conflict of interest.

  • +1

A PSA for anyone, avoid Beko.

    • Why?

They are pretty solid for the money.

  • -1

If manufacturer isn't playing ball, the consumer must take lawful action to encourage them to do so.

Manufacturer cannot be held responsible for anything an unknown third party outside their control does to their product.

Sure, engage third party if manufacturer consents, but generally need mutual agreement or court order to change terms of a contract and in this case, contract is between A and B. Third party is not a party to the contract and can't interfere.

Introducing third party without consent breaks the chain of causation.

(Hope that helps, did write out a better more in depth explanation, but I lost it and had to start again.)

  • We had a Beko washing machine for about 5 years. Its performance was pretty good but when we were washing larger things like sheets or blankets water would leak out of the detergent tray. Annoying more than anything else (tiled floor so no harm done), but over time unsightly rust developed on the front of the machine.

Contacted Beko who gave me some garbage about not cleaning the machine every month being the reason. We've owned several machines over the years and never had this issue with any of them. We recently moved house and despite the fact the Beko was still working, we replaced it because it looked so awful.

I'll certainly think twice before using them again. They didn't want to know and just made excuses.

    • So, water level exceeded height of detergent tray.

Makes sense that machine would overflow.

Either you were overfilling machine or it was too small for what you were using it for. They're not a one size fits all sort of thing.

Agree failure to conduct monthly clean of machine is a long bow to draw. I mean, you cleaned it every time you washed the sheets with water and detergent. Not a hill I would want to die on.

Sounds like this is a cheap brand. Was still working fine despite deterioration of aesthetics. Not a machine failure, you were just over filling it.

  • -2

Had different beko products since 10yrs.. One of the tray broke in the fridge due to my negligence and I called support to check if they had a replacement I could buy.. they sent me one for free and also added extra egg trays with the original tray as well.. I recently bought a dishwasher which was leaving foam at the bottom .. support kept constantly reaching out to check the issue is gone even after I said that I dont find the prob anymore after I fixed the outlet valve.. 🫠

I would buy beko again but hey thats just me as I had decent experience..

  • To prevent this happening again buy some cockroach gel like this.

  • +1

I'm not sure why any manufacturer should be liable to cover damage to a product which has been caused by environmental factors outside of their control. Cockroaches can cause significant damage to PCBs when they infest an electrical product by shorting traces or other components mounted on the board.

  • +1

Seems to be some misunderstandings about WARRANTEES.

As a starting point, your five year warranty (for example) is just an imaginary line in the sand.

ACL dictates the minimum length of the warranty regardless of what the manufacturer offers (unless they offer a greater benefit for the consumer than what is provided for by the ACL.

It is my understanding that most washing machines are supposed to last 5 years (pulled that number out of hat, don't know if ACL agrees).

So whether the machine costs $500 or $5,000, generally speaking, all expected to last that minimum time.

Luxury model probably has more bells and whistles, better quality materials which should reduce likelihood of breakdown (and customer inconvenience) and a better repair service should something break leading to an overall better customer experience for the lifetime of that product.

Might be they will look the other way if your machine falters a bit after the warranty ends and are probably more committed to making goodwill gestures to enhance the customer experience.

=> these guys are selling the customer experience and will likely go the extra mile. They want you to love this machine so much, when it reaches end of life they want to buy another one.

Cheap ones, probably still expected to last five years (or whatever ACL says) but won't have as many bells and whistles, lower performance standards, probably have a lower quality material increasing risk of premature failure resulting in higher frequency of customer inconvenience and a less enthusiastic repair service if something does actually break. They just want to do the bare minimum to comply with the relevant laws.

All this leads to lower level of customer experience but that's ok, cos these guys are targeting a different customer base. There will always be people attracted to lower priced appliances, they're not overly concerned with long term customer loyalty.

    • i think the cost of the unit dictates the quality of the item and length of warranty for instance if you purchased a smart phone for $200 vs $2000, you'd expect the $200 smart phone to last a year or two, whereas the $2000 smart phone is built with better well tested components and is usually designed to last longer, at least 4 years, its not fair to expect both to last 4 years

what are the quotes that they say? buy once, buy again?

"A poor man can only afford to buy once."
"I'm too poor to buy cheap things."
      "The poor pay twice."

common sense applies to warranty but unfortunately common sense is uncommon these days

  • Congratulations on your correct use of the word "advice". I almost thought using "advise" was an OzB requirement.

  • Beko dishwasher owner here for 2.5 years. The unit works great. Much better than my previous Italian dishwasher. No idea if Beko's warranty is any good as I haven't had to use it.

  • My experience is a bit different. 2 Beko dishwashers 2 different locations. 5 year warranty

First machine issue was wasn't draining but ended up to user misuse clogged with food. Beko outsources their servicing to a local business. They came out and pass the bill to the user. I guess this would be similar to cockroach infestation as the user did not maintain a good environment for the machine.

Second machine issue was it couldn't finish the cycle and kept on going about 3rd year out of 5 warranty years. Technician came out and changed a part.

    Finalised within few weeks.

Only thing was you needed to call each time and they would make sure you rang through the regular troubleshooting before they would send someone out and not online process.

"every other appliance in the kitchen…"
Are you washing clothes in the kitchen?

  • I have had beko products for the past 10 years. Our first wahing machine lasted 7 years of daily use when the drive motor packed it in. Called beko and they offered to replace with a new one for a discounted price.
I cant fault their customer service! Much better than some other whitegood manufacturers out there.
Our dishwaher and heat pump dryer are also beko and so far so good.
In the OP's case they can't blame Beko for a cockroach infestation in your home. Its like going back to a car manufacturer and expecting them to fix a hose that has eaten by mice getting in your engine bay! (You get my point).

  • +1

Troll post? Insects getting into a machine and messing shit up is not the manufacturers fault. No brand would cover this as it's completely user error. You need to prevent the insects

Look into some better pest control and/or other ways to limit it inside the home

  • If its only 3 weeks. Open it up clean with alcohol leave for a day .

    Try again

  • +1

yes a cockroach can short a device.

its unfair that you think its ok for cockroaches to be inside your machine.

i once had a small cockroach inside my microwave that turned it on randomly one day, imagine if this happened when no one was home, probably set the house on fire?

  • +2

I am a service technician, you are a grub, clean your house and use cockroach baits. Usually the cockroaches are all gone by the time the machine is worked on, the fact you still had live ones in there means you had a really bad infestation. I have never met a clean person with a roach infestation.

  • 9KG Beko heat pump dryer hard at work, mostly daily; zero issues - excellent product. Then again, probably tad warm for the stray roach…

  • Man the day time posters are a different breed. People talking here like they live in a controlled environment lol.

Dude, small insects live in houses. Sometimes none. Some times you'll get a few. That's the environment these machines operate in.

If your house is infested then deal with that, but 3 in a washing machine doesn't speak to the condition of the house.

Make it Appliances Online's problem or charge back. If the machine is not built effectively to operate in a house and limit access to sensitive components, then that's their problem. They can take it up with the manufacturer if they like.

Ignore these muppets telling you to cop it sweet.

  • Same deal with Samsung split air cons. Gecko shorted out the circuit board in the outdoor unit. Sorry, no warranty. $250 service fee and $900 quote to repair ($700 new cost).
Bought a Fujitsu and will never touch anything Samsung again.
If manufacturers want to screw us over, they should make their products reasonably vermin proof.
Should not be consumers cost to cover their design ineptitude.

    • +1 on the Fujitsu.

  • I don't know how they can just thrown numbers like that and think it's fine. FFS I hate manufacturers that screw the humble owners over just trying to live.

I guess with my trade background I can get away with doing a lot of repairs of my own but it's bloody frustrating.

if four cockroaches are living in your machine your house is a pig sty

I have had a beko dryer for 5 years with no issues
Just bought another one and seems to be going strong

Seems like you are failing to keep your house clean, if you have that many cockroaches i can only imagine where else they are hiding

  • There’s a reason why computer bugs are called bugs

  • They’re fair to claim that any problem caused by a cockroach will not be covered. You might possibly seek clarification on how exactly a cockroach is responsible, to uncover any porkies; or you may attempt to argue this indicates the product is not fit for purpose.

The bigger issue here is that they CANNOT unilaterally state that the mere presence of cockroaches “voids your warranty”. That is a big naughty.

  • we sprayed the machine & 4 roaches exited the machine…hardly an "infestation".

Would suggest using the dust stuff for a few days. Everywhere under the machine. You'll be surprised how many will be dead under there then.

I once lived in an apartment in Sydney where we thought we had a couple of roaches. We dusted the floors with that roach stuff and must of killed 100s of them in a few days.

  • Former Beko technical manager here and current appliance repair technician. If it’s got roaches, it’s got roaches, can’t argue with that.
