On sale is this NAS and Mini PC from Aoostar that's packed with features and offers a lot more performance than the usual NAS offerings. This is due to the AMD Ryzen 7 5825U 8 core, 16 thread CPU and AMD Radeon graphics that makes it suitable for use as a powerful NAS, mini PC or media streaming box. Especially since it has a HDMI 2.1 port, DisplayPort and a full feature USB-C port with 4K output and PD100W input.

Featuring 4 2.5/3.5" SATA bays (not hot-swappable), 2x M.2 NVMe Gen3 x4 slots and an M.2 WiFi slot that can be turned into an additional SSD slot (good for the OS drive) using an adapter. For RAM there's two DDR4-3200 SODIMM RAM slots with support for up to 64GB. It has 2.5G dual LAN for connectivity.

In terms of I/O they've opted to add the ports to the side with 2x 2.5G LAN, 2x USB 3.2, 2x USB 2.0, DP, HDMI, USB-C, MicroSD card slot, 3.5mm audio jack and the DC port. On the rear there is a large 120mm fan to keep the system cool.

While barebones it still comes with Windows 11 Pro and you can install any other OS like TrueNAS, XPEnology and more.

You should have a look at Immich - you can think of it as a self-hosted Google Photos app. Really good features and good Android / iOS apps.

    • +5

I can vouch for Immich as a great photo backup solution. Easy to set up with Docker and there’s lots of guides out there for it.

    • I've installed immich on my treunas, the mobile application is also very good, although the app is still in initial stage but works very well and fast.

      • Are you running the Android or iOS Immich app? Any annoyances or bugs?

        • +1

I've been using IOS app for a while now and just Android one today and can't complain, apart from frequent updates at both server and client level.

  • Any hard drive recommendations?

    • +1

I got a NAS recently and got the hard drives from east digital. They've been working well so far.

  • +1

Anyone planning to run this with 4x of the 3.5" refurb enterprise EXOS drives that are the OzB standard read this thread

This NAS doesn't stagger the startup on drives so when fully loaded, the standard 120W power brick will choke on power up

There's also been reports the brick is the typical buzzing low quality spec so budget for a proper 200W Lenovo brick if you are going to max out the unit

    • any links to 200W Power Supplies? Guessing its a barrel connector?

  • Would this be better than the Synology ones? esp the Intel N100 ones seems like a good deal if it still has 4 hard drive bays

    • there is no operating system with this case - you need to install your own.

      • from what I've read there should be win11 and TrueNAS is easy enough to install

    • This is great value if you are comfortable setting up a NAS and using as a homelab.

Synology/QNAP is better if you want something that is set & forget with vendor support, and proven reliability end-to-end.

      • -1

well some people are saying it might have issues down the line, which I prefer to avoid with storage solutions and also the included 120W isnt enough with 4 slots full…if it was $300 mark might've 'risked' it but yeah not too sure anymore

not too sure how widespread these are but anyway I'm not that desperate yet.

        • -1

even with synology there are reports of crashing and etc etc.

nothing is perfect and Free, STyle

          • @CyberMurning: i dont know if you are trying to be a smartass but there's plenty of resources people linked here that suggests the savings arent worth it Cyber, MURING

    • hardware wise, yes i think so. especially when comparing similar price range and number of bays.

  • I've been looking for the home assistant device. I was thinking a much cheaper option, the wyze 5070 (I already have a nas) but perhaps this would be suitable as a secondary nas option. Is this overkill? Cheers

  • -3

    I am getting into nas
    Would like to ask
1 what is the best os?
2 could we have nas and home entertainment system in parallel?
3 how is the file sharing? Any app I could use?
4 how is the cyber security?
    5 how is the redundancy?
6 could I have vm and nas in parallel? How
7 how to justify the upfront cost and electricity bill of nas vs Google drive?

    Your answer is really appreciated

  • I know this is not recommended but is it possible to run all of this using hypervisor? only two network ports will be a problem?

    truenas
    pfsense
    pihole
    openvpn
    jellyfin
    radarr
    home assistant

    • +2

      Yes, quite easily.

2x ports will be fine. Network port discussions are blown out of proportion for home use, because you're not transferring bulk data 24/7.

Pfsense/opnsense is really the only one that will require attention. The easiest way would be to have 1x port for your local LAN connectivity, and the other port for WAN or DMZ connectivity. There are other ways of doing it but you'll have to go read a few blogs.

  • This, or the terramaster F424 pro with i3 n305 (for $800 when on special) ?
    What are people's recommendations?

    • I was tossing up between the Terramaster and Ugreen before finding the Ryzen Aoostar.
      Purchased the Aoostar last night.
Can't wait to get my hands on it.

      • I haven't been able to find a supplier than sells the Ugreen NAS in Australia

        • +1

          Unfortunately no Aussie supplier yet.
Amazon US would be your best bet. $595 + shipping $190. In USD of course.

          UGREEN NASync DXP4800 Plus 4-Bay Desktop NAS, Intel Pentium Gold 8505 5-Core CPU, 8GB DDR5 RAM, 128G SSD, 1 * 10GbE, 1 * 2.5GbE, 2 * M.2 NVMe Slots, 4K HDMI, Network Attached Storage (Diskless) https://a.co/d/1TqHFj9

          • @KirKoloft: That's what I suspected, thanks for that!

Good to see a bunch of new options coming out from China.

  • Anyone know the lanes available to the 2x M2 NVME sockets?

    • +1

Scratch that, one of the linked review states Gen3x4.

  • Damn I had just purchased parts to build my first PC NAS couple of weeks ago (still waiting for my case to get delivered) would’ve happily jumped on something like this instead.

  • Wow nice one!

What drives would people recommend? Only need a small setup to start with, maybe 10tb max

  • +3

Be very cautious if you are planning to run TrueNAS on one of these - their SATA controller is an ASMedia ASM1064, just google "ASM1064 TrueNAS" if you want to read pages of people experiencing issues.

I bought mine a month ago, and have loved everything about it - been rolling with a 4x 16TB setup, with 2x mirror vdevs… until last week when I kicked off a data integrity (scrub) check on my drives. Immediately, both disks from one mirror dropped out completely, and it looked for a while like I had just lost 16TB of data, if not more. Took me about 10 hours of asking forums, learning more about the ZFS filesystem than I would ever care to, and stressing out - but eventually I found a way to repair the mirror disks. The SATA controller seems like it had been oversaturated, and this corrupted some of my drive partition information.

It makes me sad, but I might have to return the little guy. It might be fine for non-ZFS filesystems, but I really don't think I can trust it with my data if it's going to fall to pieces every time I stress the SATA controller.

    • +3

Happy you didn't lose your data. I've been running ZFS for years and faced similar stressful situations, but just like you found, managed to find a repair solution in all cases.

The youtube review that @TightLikeThisx mentions above reckons the Ryzen system uses AMD's embedded SATA controller, not ASMedia. Is yours the N100 or Ryzen model?

      • +1

Thankfully ZFS appears to be a lot more resilient than other filesystems I've used in the past!

That is a good catch - mine is the N100, yes. Maybe the Ryzen version might fare better - will investigate that a bit further.

    • +1

      just google "ASM1064 TrueNAS

Well that was a rabbit hole. And one I hope I never have to experience myself.

    • You still.can return it for full refund? Bought friom where?
So aslong not using o/s with zfs system we will be fine? Hmm but i was planning on using truenas as well

      • Yes - I bought it from Aliexpress on Dec 23 last year, I opened a return and with my evidence they approved my return within a couple of hours. I was surprised - expected very little help from Ali after the 15 day return window closed, but so far everything looks great.

For your own sanity, if you buy one I would advise plugging in every drive you want to put inside, installing TrueNAS, and then running a scrub test on all the drives to see if there are any failures. In my case a scrub task started automatically while I was already in the middle of copying files to the NAS, so it was a pretty worst-case scenario I'd imagine. If it fails during the scrub, you'd be within the exchange window - if not, you're probably okay.

As crikey mentioned above, the Ryzen version of the WTR Pro looks to have a different and less troublesome SATA controller, so I've ordered one of those instead and will see how it goes.

        • how much did you bought it for?
thanks. but my usage case is multimedia so i still prefer N100. and too bad unraid o/s is not free…

If it fails during the scrub, you'd be within the exchange window - if not, you're probably okay.
so if we dont do any scrub it will be okay? i mean it wont fail when watching plex or processing arrs dockers? or transferring large files

          • @CyberMurning: I bought mine for $325 USD which is a bit more expensive than the deal above.

You might be fine without scrubbing - as long as you aren't pulling data from multiple drives at once and stressing them you probably wouldn't run into too many issues. If you were planning to use the device to just run a few apps and store/watch media I would say you should be fine - as long as you have multiple backups of any important data then the worst case scenario is that you would just need to recreate the pool and restore the backed up files.

            • @ngengerous: You and other guy mentioned a way to fix thr issue (zfs) is that really easy like just couple click and not rebuilding the whole thing takes week for example

              • @CyberMurning: Some issues can be quick and easy, and others can take multiple days - some issues are even too severe to be recovered at all.

  • This system is quite loud after looking at youtube video, or at least the ryzen anyone anyone know if n100 has a cpu fan or passive

    • Both have fans and they can be reduced in speed via the BIOS. Otherwise you can replace it yourself with something quieter.

      • can you put 2.5" in the 3.5" drive bays?

        • Yes

    • most NAS will be noisy with the drives in it, due to the mechanical whirring etc.from the drives, some are worse than others because they have ventilation holes in the case to help with cooling, which of course means it doesn't 'hold in' the noise of the drives. I have my NAS in the loungeroom and it's only a metre or so away from the tv, but unless it's a super quiet section of video the noise isn't noticeable due to whatever we're watching.

  • why is N100 better than ryzen for plex? cos quick sync?

    • +3

Cause some folks like transcoding their 4K media to 1080. Why download 4K if you're going to transcode it to 1080?
      Just download 1080 media instead.

      • +1

Absolutely agreed. same as for watching on a 720p mobile phone screen - I just don't get it. The 4K media I do have I watch on my 4K tv and it's direct played from a SMB share using KODI as the media player / decoder (so it passes through HDR10+ for DV encoded video, and Dolby Atmos audio to the surround sound AVR).

        • Totally agree with you mate👍😁

  • +2

I've been running one of these (Ryzen version) for a little while.

Originally ran windows 11 for a few days to stress-test/benchmark the system, then switched over to UnRAID.

Running x4 SATA drives, x2 NMVE drives as cache. Runs pretty cool and quiet

  • -2

Seems to be $480~ via TaoBao before shipping costs.
    $505~ with slow shipping.

    • They can swnd directly to Australia? I heard some seller only ship to local address

    • +1

I checked on my Taobao account and the Ryzen variant (not Intel N100) is ¥2774.90 total including GST. That's roughly A$610.

The Intel N100 variant is ¥2114.90 or around A$460.

      • Pretty sure it's Ryzen, I've got both n100 and Ryzen in my cart.

        Ryzen barebones = $445
        With cc fees $500
        With sea shipping $540
        With air shipping $640

This is using integrated Cainao as part of taobao, presume you can organise your own forwarder for different prices.

Ryzen bare bones base price is ¥1999 ($445), N100 is ¥1399. N100 barebones doesn't seem to be available, and so n100 is $480 AUD with 16gb/512gb bundle. Not inc shipping and fees.

Expedited air shipping brings prices up to what you mentioned, but can use consolidated sea shipping to combo with other stuff bought.

        • Have you got a link? Either way AliExpress is worth it for significantly less hassle. Especially for those who can't read Chinese, as even with translation the site can be difficult. Not to mention organising freight.

          • @Clear: Try here

I can't read Chinese either, but taobao is easy enough to navigate using live translate.

            • @bs0: That's the one. This is what I get

Edit: I realise I had the more expensive freight selected. However with how the consolidation sea freight works you'll end up paying more later on when it arrives at the warehouse for consolidation with other goods.

              • @Clear: Yeah, I mentioned in my previous reply that expedited sea shipping brings prices up to what you have mentioned. That's more expensive because it's expedited air shipping. This cost is calculated into the AliExpress price which includes shipping as well. Taobao provides an option for cheaper sea, but slower, shipping.

The direct sea shipping is currently a total of $540~, which means consolidated sea shipping total would be less than that (slightly).

I think paying via Alipay also skips the cc fee, as well as using your own forwarders can change the cost.

Yes AliExpress is generally easier. however, Taobao happens to be the parent company of AliExpress - which is selling the same products, albeit in English stores.

  • Hey guys, is this the right Ram for this Ryzen server?

    https://www.crucial.com/memory/server-ddr4/mta9asf2g72hz-3g2…

  • Any good deal for the hdd?

  • +2

I run many nas/das equipment at home and most of my gear is server grade ie md3460s 60 bay, i built few home media nas for family and freinds using the following
    Jonsbo n5 case 12 bay
    Cwwk q670 motherboard
    Intel 12400t cpu
    16gb ram
    12 x 6tb sas drives
    9300i 16 port controller
Low power , plex perfect for transcoding.
Fyi for anyone interested more expensive but well worth it.

    • Thanks.. do you have a super rough idea how much that approach might cost these days (not including drives)?

      • here's my similar build without drives:

n5095 mini-itx NAS motherboard from ali express (12 SATA ports) - was about $180 AUD delivered.
        16GB Corsaire Vengeance DDR4 3200 SO-DIMM - amazon - $44
Jonsbo N3 mini itx NAS case - PLE - $229
thermaltake toughpower SFX 550W PSU (total overkill for thi) - PLE - $159
6 x SATA thin cable ( ADCAUDX or similar) - amazon - just makes connecting SATA backplane to motherboard so much neater - $24

currently I have 5x 10TB drives installed and with the system at load it uses about 50W from memory.

        • damn tempting. for me ill go with N2 just need 5 bays it would be $149 - PLE
          and total $556

any cheaper alternative motherboard with just 6 sata ports? but same cpu n5095
edit ah sorry $180 already cheap
maybe can go for cheaper powersupply

          • @CyberMurning: if I end up building a second NAS box personally I'll probably go for the N100 mini itx NAS motherboard, which generally only have 6 SATA ports. $10-20 more expensive but should have slightly better performance and slightly lower power usage.

  • damn code was already used up since yesterday.
I was on fence if I really need that kind of NAS just to host 2x 16TB hdds on network

    • +1

Do you think you'll have any plans for expansion over the next 5 years or so? If not, I used a Terramaster 2-bay home NAS for a good few years - it wasn't fast but it did give me the ability to run a mirrored drive setup for data redundancy that runs all the time, for under $250. Would recommend it to anyone in the same boat.

      • What do you mean by slow exactly ? Transfer speeds via FTP?

Not at the moment, as 16TB HDDs are for migrating my portable usb HDDs that are filled with nvidia shadowplay clips. So just purely dumping videos from my pc over to NAS and i reckon those 2 HDDs will last me for quite a while.
I believe Terramaster 2-bay sounds good for this

Tho I do have 2 x 4TB (Mirrored) seta HDDs just for backing up the camera rolls of my phones on a monthly base

        • +1

I believe my older Terramaster only had gigabit ethernet, so it was decent enough - just not lightning quick. For dumping videos it'd be more than enough.

  • -1

Any recommendations for the N100 ram and hdd?
    32GB/1TB?

    • 16GB is generally the maximum listed support for the N100 CPU/chipset - unless you plan on running VMs on your NAS then 16GB may well be overkill (I have 16GB RAM on my NAS and even with 9 docker containers running and actually doing stuff (scanning drives, downloading, adding metadata etc.) it barely gets above 3GB RAM total in use.). I did add 1x NVME drive to my system to act as read cache and (placebo effect ?) thought it made a difference when rapidly going through my movie collection running under jellyfin (ie: images were cached for faster loading etc.).
