The Current Shortage of Eggs in Supermarkets

I've been unable to buy eggs in supermarkets around my area for about a month now due to the current problems in the industry (ongoing avian flu problem and transition to non-caged birds). The shelves are simply always bare.

Some of the butchers or fruit and veggie shops have them for a higher price, so check those places.

However, I was recently in a country town and discovered there is a plentiful supply, maybe due to the local suppliers from nearby farms or something. So the next time you're on a road trip and passing through a country town, checkout the local supermarket - you might get lucky! I got 3 x dozen packs of 800g eggs for $5.80 which is larger than the 700g I normally buy.

800g eggs which is larger than the 700g

    good to know.

You cut off the start and end of my sentence to remove the context? Just giving an idea of the good price they were at compared to the 700g which is usually the cheapest, even if still highly inflated.

    • +24

It sounds legit on paper but I better get my quant guy on it to run the numbers

      • +8

don't eggsaggerate, you'll only eggscalate the situation!

      • I just did a number crunch real quick. Uhhh.. yeah gimme a sec… I'm coming up with thirty-two point three three, repeating of course, percentage, of savings.

      eggcellent!!

    • -7

800g is very common with independent egg sellers
Also also fresh out of the chooks' bum as well.

Always check those roadside fruit and egg stalls

    • +1

      800 > 700. Math checks out.

    • -1

I just asked to ChatGPT to make sure. It does true.

    • +1

Nope, you cut off the end of his sentence.

    • +13

To be fair the OP said "…which is larger than the 700g I normally buy." so in that context it is a reasonable statement.

You have taken part of what they said to imply that they stated the obvious.

Perhaps a career at Fox News beckons

    • good to know.

Do you work for media by chance? As that's exactly what they do, remove words which provide the context!

No problem at both our nearest Coles stores.

Seems to be more a problem for Woolies.

    • Seems to be the case in brisbane from my random visits to 4 different Cole’s/woolies last few weeks

    • No eggs at all our local Coles, Woolies and Aldi.

    • yeah I have noticed this too. I shop online, Coles always shows Eggs as in stock - all brands and sizes, but Woolworths only have the 6 pack of eggs in stock and nothing else at all.

  • 800g eggs which is larger than the 700g

    proof ?

  • +3

    Never an issue in SA.

    • I found it occasionally bare, but more commonly in woolies than coles….. Potatoes though? No decent bags any more :(

      • +2

Look for places that source direct from Virginia/Angle Vale - Drakes, Romeos, Fruit and Veg stores over Colesworth

        • Will have to give that a go….

      • Just bring your own bags for the potatoes.

    • +1

      Never an issue in SA.

Yeah, nah. To be fair SA is just an oversized chicken farm so no surprises there.

    • Well… OP did mention rural country towns had an abundance of eggs.

    3 x dozen packs of 800g eggs for $5.80

Was it close to best before date or something?

    • They likely mean each

    • I know right, I'm paying $6.10 for a single dozen of 700g Coles brand eggs. Also, eggs are available in almost every shop, it's just the expensive ones that are left over. There is no egg shortage, only a shortage of cheap eggs.

  • +22

Just grabbed some from my backyard for free. And by free I mean I disregard all the money I've spent spoiling my feathered friends!

    • +10

I have a friend who has chickens at her house and is forever bringing us over cartons on eggs she cant get through eating because of many they lay… But I have always laughed when she said "and I get all these free eggs!!" and I think about the $5,000+ setup she has and how these chickens live better than what she does :D

      • -2

        Don't bite the hand….
        An egg in the hand…
        Never look a gift egg…..
Don't put all your eggs in…..

Tell her to put some aside (in a suitable armoury) for next Hallowe'en
They'll be ripe by then. And at a premium price level.

      • +1

I’d be more worried about the chickens attracting snakes. I have a phobia about snakes.

        $5000?

Wow something's not right about this story.

    • +2

Same, we are swimming in them this time if year.

Australian families waste so much food, no reason for every house in the suburbs not to have a couple of layers (except for maybe all the people who let their cats hunt…) Went to the local poultry auction today and you can pick up a good laying hen for less than $20 which will give you butt nuggets for years.

Trump will lower egg prices …. Just wait for Greenland annexation

    • +11

Just wait till he decides to invade Australia so he can send immigrants and criminals somewhere. Worked for the British a few hundred years ago right?

        • +6

In hindsight Trump is probably the greatest justification alive, for abortion rights

          • +1

            @Protractor: Certainly for retrospective abortions.

            • +7

              @try2bhelpful: Word.!

Yesterday my partner said they thought he was a psycho.
I'm expecting an upgrade to evil , by the time they get home, after Trumps last 2 days effort.
And Dutton wants to emulate/imitate him.

      • +1

Sounds like he's busy devastating their farming industry by causing the workers to be afraid of showing up out of fear of raids.

If the US has shortages then everywhere in the world will feel the price increase as they buy up more of the supply.

Though perhaps the US will fall into civil war and we'll be wishing overpriced food was our worst concern while eating the gruel in a Chinese slave camp taking apart the continent's remaining resources.

        • +2

Putin and Xi love Trump because he is doing his work for him, and also when the Divided States of AMurrica makes any military decisions Trump can't help opening up his sphincter like gob to tell the world. The Yanks are more at risk under Trump, and he will wield power for decades (installing family, friends, proxy Muppets etc to run for President) if their society lasts the next 5 or 6 years of turmoil.
Just make sure you have popcorn supplies/

          • @Protractor: The problem is that what happens in the US either leaves Australia very vulnerable to a neighbouring superpower who would surely like this continent's resources, or potentially demands Australia become a direct vassal.

            • +1

@CodeExplode: Bit late for that,we've been playing deputy for USA long enough to be seen as an appendage. That comes with all the fringe benefits as we push our weight around locally while relying on the bully behind us to walk our talk. Sovereignty isn't if you are a military base on one hand and a mining and energy whore on the other

  • Wife tried to buy from Costco Auburn 2-3 times but they have no stock. Marsden park one had plenty.

  • Costco Casula

  • Well its time to find out chicken or the egg..

  • -1

    There's always powdered egg.

    • +2

      Yeah Nah

      • Relive the hotel breakfast buffet at home.

  • +2

Up here in Darwin, just over two years ago a dozen eggs were around $3.20. Now it's around $5.80!

    • -1

Nah bro inflation is down its 2.8% it started with a 6 before this government your experience is wrong

      • +5

Just because inflation rate decreases it doesn't mean prices go down. They just stop rising quite so quickly.

  • +1

It probably also depends on the time of day you shop as to if you can find some.

    • Agreed. If you hit the store later in the day, forget about getting any.

  • -1

    Plenty at Asian marts

    • My local KFL only has caged eggs, and even those are on low supply

  • +2

What time of day are you going? If at the end, then most-daily provided items would be gone by then.

I tend to get eggs in the morning and they're generally plentiful then.

  • Hit and miss for me at the supermarkets.

However I purchase the cheaper Free range eggs.

Doesn't seem to be a problem with supplying caged eggs or $10 a dozen eggs.

  • I bought a couple of dozen the other week. There was plenty.

  • +1

There a plenty of eggs at Harris Farm. The joy I feel every time my missus walks in with a $15 box of eggs cannot be measured.

    • Will last her a day or two

  • noticed the same at melbourne West,

  • +1

Its the suppliers not bowing to woolies demands.

    • -1

      Are they boycotting Woolworths?

  • I can get reasonably priced eggs from Costco Epping 70% of the visit, but not seeing anything in my local Coles for months.

  • +1

    No issues here in Perth

    • We have had our fair share of shortages over the past couple of years though. Only Aldi seems to struggle keeping eggs on the shelves these days, but I have no issues whatsoever with just about everywhere else. MCQ, Spud Shed, Woolies, other local Asian grocers all have plenty of stock at the moment.

There have been times in the past though when there were massive shortages and if you were lucky, you could get a premium free range 700g carton at Woolies for $10+ and that was about it.

  • +2

IGA here has heaps, no stock issues and in fact they are cheaper than the big 3

  • +2

All ALDI's in inner-west SYD (i go to 3 diff ones) have had 0 eggs for months now, although i often shop at the end of the day

    • You have to get in early. My local aldi said they don't stock eggs on a Monday. Come Tuesday morning. But each aldi is different

  • +2

Don't count your chickens before your eggs.

  • I would suggest looking into egg alternatives/replacements (tofu scrambled etc) because with bird flu and the way it's going in the US it's not looking like egg shortages will be alleviated any time soon

    • what do you enjoy more? the price increases in all the products you buy? or the extra crap/cancer causing stuff they shove in to substitute the eggs?

      • +3

the extra crap/cancer causing stuff they shove in to substitute the eggs?

I didn't know flaxseed or chia seeds were cancer causing. I've now made a bonfire in the backyard and burnt my years supply of these nasties. Thanks for educating us!

        • lachhelix mentioned a different binding agent was used. Eggs are a natural unprocessed binding agent. flaxseed or chia seeds are not binding agents. Any further information you require will be billed at the approperate rate.

          • @snapper17: They are binding agents in baking with water

          • @snapper17: Please don't mill corn into some kind of 'flour' you might be horrified at the result. Corn cobs aren't binding agents!

Hey, I love eggs - used to love omelettes as a kid, unfortunately I can't eat them anymore, dunno why everybody is getting so upset haha

    • I’m with you on this one. Eggs are overused where they don’t need to be that make lots of products off limits to those with allergy/intolerance, ethical or religious beliefs relating to eggs. I work with some Hindu colleagues who don’t eat eggs, but will have milk. Then there’s are vegans and egg allergy is a common one. Many cakes, batters, biscuits etc don’t need egg but it just goes in by default.

Personally I eat eggs, but when catering for others it would help me if there wasn’t unnecessary in so many things.
