That’s a pretty good deal - just a shame that holding a personal card precludes you from the business sign up offers nowadays :(

    • ooh didnt know about that TIL

    • Also true for reverse. I had this business card which showed up on my personal credit file and makes me not eligible for getting any bonus points on personal card.

      • Yes that’s right - many years ago you could still get them - i got the bonus on a business plat charge even though i held the personal one. But they closed that loophole. Shame - because in the US, you can get the bonus on most new cards you apply for

    • Yep, it's an 18-month lockout from sign-up bonuses.

When I cancelled my personal card, the rep asked why, and I told her it was because the card was precluding me from business sign-up bonuses.

She said she heard that feedback a lot. Hopefully, they'll reconsider after a few thousand people report the same.

I signed up for this card last year and got 150k points, so this is a good deal. Also, Amex is pretty relaxed with approvals, my business was barely 6 months old and they gave me the card, while other providers were very quick to deny me.

clicked the link and still showing 130k points. Anyone like me?

    • I think you'll need to use a referral link.

  • Hi do you accept amex?
    No
    Alrighty then…

    • +1

Think of this as $450 to buy 170k points.

Plus the fees you're going to pay on the $6000 spend, for example @ 3% surcharge you need to account for another $180. So total cost = $630

Atleast that's how I see it.

Use paypal to offset AMEX surcharge, where possible. Coles and Woolies don't charge surcharge either.
I use visa or debit or cash when there is surcharge.

@CptnObvious: Fair enough but 6k is a lot of groceries in 3 months. I'd only be able to achieve that target via business expenses and all my suppliers have a cc surcharge.

I only mentioned it for people to think about.

            • @cv05: Most of mine came from energy and bills - especially when you are running a business.

Use the likes of this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/888061 and this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/887701 (now expired) to help meet minimum spend if struggling.

        • Or try spend it where fees aren't applicable or at around the 1.5% mark. Plenty of places charge fees for Visa/Mastercard anyways.

Very easy to spend $6k on Amex and not pay a single surcharge…..

          • @digitalane: Great insight!

            • -1

@cv05: More so than your quite frankly inaccurate comment. If you’re paying 3% you are doing it wrong!

              • @digitalane: What inaccurate comment are you referring too? If it's the 3% one then I literally stated it as a calculation example and not that 3% was the actual fee.

Other than Coles / Woolworths & their associated businesses, where else can you use Amex without costing you a big surcharge anyone ??

    • +5

Almost anywhere in my experience. I pay for 95% of purchases with AMEX with no surcharge.

      • Same.

And, these days, amex surcharge is probably like just a tad more than visa/mastercard surcharges (if not the same). A few years ago, they lowered the merchant fees (and devalued the points at the same time) so most merchants have been passing on the savings to consumers.

    Thanks for posting this.

Was just approved instantly and was also the easiest application I've ever done.

    • Did amex ask for abn and business tax return evidences?

      • Just the ABN

  • Newbie here, am I still eligible for this offer if I apply under a different ABN ? even though, I already got a business AMEX

    • It's tied to your name, not the business name. So, no.

You can't get a personal AMEX bonus either.

  • +1

You need to fix the title. Annual fee is $450 not $45

    • Thanks and apologies. Didn't realise I ran out of characters. Edited and updated.

  • Eligible if you hold another different amex business card?

    • Negative
