  • Thanks OP. Good deal for SSD with heatsink. ATL for the past year.

    • +2

      Doesn't have heatsink does it?

      • There is an option on Amazon to select SN850X with Heatsink - https://amzn.asia/d/iaEA2S5

        • Yeah but that changes the price.

          • @PleasureMe: Yes, it does. At $202, it’s still a great deal compared to the prices over the past year. The lowest I’ve seen this SSD was $198, and that was over a year ago.

            • @Maverick1002: Looks like they changed this. With the heatsink shows as $308 for me.

            • @Maverick1002: Yep I've had my eye on it for a year or so, checking everyday. Picked it up with heatsink a couple weeks back for $207 as that was the lowest it had gotten. There wasn't enough stock to post here.

Waiting for the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB sale

    • Is it that much better?

      • +7

Nooe. People have complained about 990 pro a lot.
I wanted a 990 but after much reviews I think 850x is much more reliable.

        • IS THIS TRUE?? I thought 990 Pro is gold standard

          • +7

@freelife: 990 Pro had a reported issue earlier on, requiring a firmware upgrade. It's best to upgrade firmware right away once you receive your 990 Pro (most likely the current batches would already have a new enough firmware, but probably still best to check and do a firmware upgrade). • @netsurfer: Thanks I've decided to go with this deal and save $100+ given I probably won't tell the difference anyway with the 990 Pro speed (for LLM AI work)

          • +1

@freelife: nope they had a lot of issues in the past - search on Google and you ll see.

          • +1

@freelife: The wear was excessive due to a firmware issue. Some claim it’s just an incorrect estimate, but Samsung’s updated firmware didn’t reverse the wear percentage. I still have a 1TB 990 Pro with 60% estimated life remaining, despite less-than-average use.

            • @ozmma: Aw that sucks. You couldn't claim a replacement under warranty?

              • @freelife: No spare drive. I thought about getting one to switch and try the warranty, but it didn’t happen. :)

  • +1

Never snapped purchased faster thanks OP

    • +5

Thanks for helping validate my 3AM purchase. I’m sure I won’t regret it now.

  • There is a heatsink variation, anyone know if it's worth getting?

    • +2

I would say its worth it. Its just $15 more and also if you are going to use it for PS5 then heatsink is the way to go. Even for PC setups, a heatsink provides better thermal management.

    • +2

I don’t think the include one is anything special, for the price difference you have a few choices via Amazon at $15 or less. Or you could look at it as a $15 discount on a more premium heat sink option if cooling is a concern for your setup and usage.

    • +3

I bought without the heatsink and purchased a Thermaright one from AliExpress for $7. This was the last time this deal was posted.

It has fantastic performance, super good combo.

  • Was desperately looking for this but just found out it is double sided and cannot be used in laptop.

    Can anyone please confirm.this.

    • +1

I got the 4TB version which was double-sided and at the time I thought my research revealed the 2TB version was one-sided but I might be misremembering.

    • +2

I bought and installed one into my son's Dell laptop, works a treat.

The 2TB version is definitely single sided.

  • risky getting it shipped from germany to au?

    • +5

not at all from Amazon :)

      • Have one about to be delivered from Amazon de. Turning up 7 days ahead of advertised date fwiw.
Previously had another "delivered " around 16 December (Black Friday sale) from Amazon de however it was completely different from what I ordered ( a jigsaw puzzle!) . Called Amazon locally who immediately apologised; instant refund to my cc and offered to honour original price (bf sale price) if I re-ordered. So overall I think extremely low risk…..

    • I bought two from Amazon (one with heatsink and one without), one shipped from Germany, the other shipped from the US. I've never had an issue (touch wood) purchasing from o/s through Amazon.

  • +3

Any reason why over the KC3000?

    • No

$179 locally for the KC3000 after the $10 eGift card is a better deal

SN850X is well overdue for an upgrade - even the $155 MSI M482 uses WD's own latest BiCS6 NAND which is why even without DRAM, that drive matches the SN850X in real world speeds

  • +2

Runs cooler than Kingston My WD SN850X 4tb in enclosure runs much cooler than my Kingston Fury Renegade 4TB

    • Is it with a heatsink or without?

      • +1

Both non HS versions, but using enclosure supplied thermal pads 2 x Wavlink USB4 ST-401C enclosures

  • +1

Thanks OP, been for waiting for a decent 2TB SSD for use with my PS5 to drop sub-200.

    • +4

prob worth spending the extra $15 to get the heatsink version as someone above mentioned…

  • +2

Is the best SSD value wise to shove into a PS5?

    • +2

      Yes

      • +1

Cheers. Have been wanting an SSD upgrade - haven't been able to download any games for a while now. Jumped on this.

  • +2

Need a decent 4TB for my PC

  • I've had a bit of a dig around but a bit of conflicting information - is anyone able to advise if these can be run with a Synology NAS?

    • +1

You can it if only the NAS supports NVMe support for caching and has an M.2 NVMe slot specifically for cache drives. Pretty uncommon for a NAS to support NVMe for storage. I could be wrong.

      • +3

Have a plus vote back. Pretty much the best reply to be given considering no model number supplied. Also if it’s cache you would need 2x drives and 2TB would be overkill.

        • Thank you for your replies - these answer my question. To clarify I was referring to the DS423+.

          • +1

@Quarth: Looks like it can on these newer models ( my old gen while similar is a cache use only for those slots) - you have 2x NVME bays - and they can be a dedicated storage pool.
Given the purpose of a NAS you will need two drives to get the physical redundancy.
            https://www.synology.com/en-global/products/DS423+#specs

Google "DS423+ NvME as storage Pool"
Finds this discussion on the value proposition.
            https://www.reddit.com/r/synology/comments/1ajlxdp/ds_423_nv…

I don't have the option but running a container on these might be a interesting thing to do, but you would be on the very high end of the experienced home user to go into that.

Just an FYI. In my use case as a cache it reports a hit rate of 80% on a pair of 128GB of drives ( currently using 3GB in the cache) I don't think bigger caches will improve my admittedly low utilisation ( mainly backup use, some media streaming).

          • +2

@Quarth: You can create volumes on it with Synology_enable_M2_volume.

I have 2 x SN580 in a RAID setup on my DS923+ running all my VMs and Docker containers. It works great.

  • 12% claimed - looks like there’s plenty

  • This in an enclosure would be perfect for a Panasonic S5 IIX camera.

  • Thanks, purchased with heatsink for PS5. If it ends up not being used much it'll live in my PC as an upgrade to the slow SSD there!

  • I need one for the PS5 - but I might be getting an Amazon voucher for Christmas!

  • i dont have a ps5 but ive been looking around for a solid cheap fast relaible small storage device that can work directly on iphone and pc.. hmmmmmm

  • +4

Thank you for contributing to my horrible financial decisions

  • I don't know what to do. This or hodl for 990 pro or t500…

  • Still have my heart set on an 8tb, but too much of a tight arse to achieve my dream LOL.

    • Legit - I have 4x 2TB drives and have called it on buying anything less than 4TB.

  • Thanks. Even though it might be overkill for a gaming PC it's not that much more expensive than an inferior 2TB drive so why not.

  • dang, just bought it for $224 last week :(

  • wish the 1T is on sale, perfect for my boot drive.

  • Arrived today. Did anyone else find the little bit of sticky-tape wasn't attached to the lid correctly. No biggy, but I'm surprised it wasn't sealed in some way.

    • Mine arrived too and sealed properly

Just sad about the lack of Thunderbolt 5 enclosures. Thunderbolt 4 with 40gps throttles the speed, and worse if getting a 10gps hub.

      • Crystal mark says the hour count is right. So if it was opened and returned, it wasn't used.

    • Yeah mine was the same, the sticky tape wasn’t sealed from the top I immediately wondered if it’s a returned product lol but yeah crystal mark gave 0 hours

      • Can ppl tamper with something to fool crystal mark? You should still ask the Seller why it wasn't sealed

        • I don’t think so, also amazon has good warranty and customer service also so I’m not that concerned tbh ..

        • But when I opened the package you know when the lid gets wrinkled, it didn’t have this problem, maybe the sticker tape was bad . Doesn’t look like it’s been opened before

      • I watched an unboxing video. The folded piece of paper explaining the 5 year warranty was missing. When you put the serial number in to WD, the warranty is only valid in Germany (of the countries I tried). I have a feeling it was amazon opening the box to remove the warranty information.

        • Do you have the folded paper? Because I do
