  • Is the Neo version a better phone?

    • +4

      Neo is lower

    • +3

It's smaller, has a plastic frame (this one has aluminium) and has a Mediatek instead of a Snapdragon which some people don't like as they claim signal strength is worse. Everything else is similar. Neo is full price currently.

    • +2

Price will play a big part here… If you're getting the Neo for $350 or less, it's pretty hard to beat.

While I've always preferred Qualcomm over Mediatek, having used the Neo for a few weeks now there isn't really anything about it that would make me tell anyone not to buy it (at the right price).
It has a slightly smaller screen, lower grade Gorilla Glass but nothing thats a deal breaker for me (leaving headphone jacks and SD card slots for another argument, plus they are missing from both models here anyway).
Yes, the battery in the Neo is also smaller, but I wouldn't say its undersized. Seems the Dimensity chipset is quite efficient.

      • At this discounted price would you still go for the Neo?

        • +2

Having used it, yeh probably. I don't think I'd see the extra $75+ value in the minor differences in this one now.

          • -2

@bamzero: So the Neo 50 is more expensive but lesser spec. I’m confuse.

            • +4

@nightelves: It was $200 on the black Friday deal the other day

            • +4

@nightelves: Well comparing RRPs the 50 is $799 and the Neo $699

When I say I'd still take the Neo over the 50 I'm talking about the discounted price of $350 or less of course.

If I hadn't tried the Neo, going by specs alone I probably would have spent the extra on the 50. Just that now I'm finding the MediaTek is performing very well and I'm not really bothered about the extra 0.3" screen size.

              • +2

                @bamzero: Just agreeing with you;
I have the neo and am loving the performance.

What actually has surprised me is the battery life, couple days with medium usage easily.

No slow downs, the default camera app is only really a little stuttery when using filters. It's a pretty solid step up from my Xiaomi 11i.

For the sub $400 I love the neo.

              • @bamzero: Your thoughts on 4300mAh battery…hoping that you've experience using Android14 on a 5000mAh phone ?

      • +4

I have to agree with your assessment, I have the 50 neo and has been remarkable efficient and stable, I can get 2 days of battery life for my usage.

GSMArena's spec sheet also continues to contradict Motorola themselves on the support duration. Some media outlets seem to have just copied the information from each other that it's 5 years for both Android updates and security updates, but any material Motorola themselves only seems to indicate 2 years Android updates and 3 years of security updates.

The Neo on the other hand, is proudly advertised as 5 and 5. That'd be a big selling point for people who tend to keep their phones for a long time.

          • +2

@shxhshzhz: Security updates end July 2027, from Motorola's support site:

            Edge 50 - July 2027 (3 years)
            Edge 50 Pro – February 2028 (4 years)
            Edge 50 Fusion – April 2028 (4 years)
            Edge 50 Neo – August 2029 (5 years)

Android update information is harder to find from a direct source. The Neo as mentioned is definitely 5 straight from the horse's mouth. This third party site has the Edge 50 at two updates, the Fusion and Pro at three, and the Neo at 5.

EDIT: 3 Android upgrades and 4 years of security updates for both the Fusion and Pro are not really in dispute regardless, it seems to be consistent information from anywhere you look. It's just the vanilla Edge 50 information that's been particularly squirrelly to find. But based on the length of security updates as per above, two updates seems by far the most likely correct information.

    • Neo is excellent hardware for the money. I got one of the $200 ones (+14.95 postage….). Even at $350ish it's fantastic value.

Speed is good, ui is snappy. I turn down or off the animatics so it's double snappy.

      Screen is bright and sharp.

Battery seems excellent. Loses very little overnight.

My only gripes so far are I miss the bigger screen of my old phone and Motorola Android is a bit rough. The neo or the 50? If you like the smaller size, get the neo and save the money.

    • Usually

      G57/g70/g80/G90/Fusio/Neo/EDGE/EDGEpro/ultra

      in that order

  • Not buying but more curious, how would this stack up against the pixel 8a?

    • +5

Better in every aspect except camera

      • Sounds like it's got my pixel 7 no trouble… Shame that the camera isn't as good, it's the one thing I don't want to compromise

    • +1

I was considering the 8a or even 8 since the 8 had the best sales prices. But there's bugger all deals on 256gb models.

I went for the 50 neo and am really impressed coming from an oppo x3 lite. Performance and battery life is great. And the camera is a massive improvement.

Pixel charging speeds are also super slow..

  • +1

My S10 battery is on its last legs, really want a flat screen phone tho hmm…

    • Not sure if the GSMArena tests were accurate, but this one has much shorter life than the neo for not much more performance? 10h vs 13.5h

  • I need to update my S9+ - is this def worth for the price?

Or anyone here recommend something around the 3-500 range?

    • I mean at 425 bucks.

you would not of got a better phone at the price

  • I have a Motorola edge 30, still going ok, mostly, though some things are concerning such as the fact it won't be updated past android 14.

    Looked up both…

Unsure how much better this is, not a phone nerd….

  • Is this same as iPhone 16 and better than moto g85?

    • +4

Is this same as iPhone 16

      Wot

    • this is actually literally the same as iPhone 200

    • +1

      Username checks out

  • Any people sensitive to pwm or flickering used this and have any feedback?

    • I had issues with my S23 so I switched to Moto Edge 30 Fusion and I got no issues since, so I assume this phone should be ok too.

  • How is this comparable to S24?

    • +4

The S24 is an RRP$1399 flagship phone. It is much better but should not be compared with this as this is a cheap mid range phone.

  • This or Pixel 7 Pro? With cashback, can pick one up around similar price for refurb Pixel 7 Pro…

    • +2

What 10% off? This is a JB exclusive model

  • I like Motorola, but their FW upgrade can be very unpredictable.

    • Sounds like they have improved that for better model phones lately, this model included

( up to 5 major OS upgrades ), so let's see what they provide.
