I use a 7060 Micro as a 24/7 Plex server, not a bad setup apart from needing an external Hard Drive due to it only taking an M2 + normal sized SSD.

    • +1

There is space for a 2.5" HDD. Is 4TB or so not enough for your video hoarding?

      • It skipped my mind one of those would fit, I had an old SSD there until it failed last night. Have now upgraded to one of these:

If it has an E key m.2 slot for a Wi-fi card you might be able to get an E to M key adapter and install another NVMe in there.

Before doing that check that Dell doesn't whitelist cards for that slot though.

      • +1

I currently have a HP ML10 with 16TB usable, and I've set up cleanup scripts to delete items that have been watched, otherwise I would have gone through that ceiling many times over.

    • +4

I do the same but with a 2bay external case and two 16tb drives. Works well, but a little noisier than I'd like (noise comes from drives). Small SSD for OS and a 1tb 2.5" HDD for temporary torrent storage.

Can tell what's the average temp of the drives? Need 2 bay case and I'm not sure if this is ideal for running 24/7

        • +1

Not great, worse than I realised :( SMART shows worst temperature reached as 50ºC. Running both hard drives at the moment streaming tv shows and movies has the current temperature at 47ºC. The fan is automatic and doesn't kick in until 48ºC. I've taken it apart to check, researched online, and there doesn't seem to be a way to change this either.

The ironwolf pro drives I have are maximum temp 65ºC, so I'll probably just live with it.

        • just thought I'd add my experience - I have an 8 bay jonsbo n3 case (lots of airflow, but no noise restriction so drive noise is background equivalent to an aquarium air pump imo), I have 3x WD 10TB (usually around 47C) and 2x Toshiba 10TB (usually around 44C) - all drives are 7200rpm.

I also use (currently a 7050 Micro) as a 24/7 Jellyfin server. It works really well.

      I added a 2TB SSD and have a total of 32GB DDR4 (overkill I know)

I use RD when I want to go sailing and remove content that I have already watched that I deem not worthy of staying there.

      • I have a 7050 too with Proxmox and Plex in an LXC container.

        iGPU pass through works perfectly.

        • i have a texhoo mini pc with large quiet fan nearly silent, running proxmox N100 its a dream

          • @SpeedAU: I've got an Intel N5095 mini-ITX NAS motherboard (12x SATA ports, USB 3 and 2x 1Gbe NICs - $180 AUD) with 1x 16GB DDR4, currently running 5x 10TB drives in a Jonsbo N3 ($229) case (8 x 3.5" HDD bays). I'm running synology DSM 7.2.2 with hacks so that HEVC encoding is added back to video and surveillance station apps (hardware transcoding is supported in Jellyfin with the Intel QSV iGPU). The drives are the noisiest part of the entire system (and then mainly only just audible due to the Jonsbo case having so many holes in it for ventilation). Ave. drive temp is 44C.

      • I’ve just changed my Jellyfin server from an old surface pro 4 to a 7060 but it’s an i5-8600. It’s working perfectly with an external drive. Why bother with internal? 8GB RAM is sufficient as well

    • I was looking at a JBOD external enclosure solution so I could mount 4 3.5 inch HDDs - but it seems that all (at least the affordable ones) manage their own fan and power settings which is a massive pain

  • What are the condition of the outer shell OP? Are they heavily scratched?

  • +2

Can we get confirmation if this is 2 x 4GB or a single 8GB SO-DIMM?

  • +6

just noting the 9600T is a hot and fairly loud chip in a tiny package, id go with the 8500t version

    • Non t version ok?

  • +3

Confirming if USB-Wifi means a separate USB wifi adapter is required but not supplied?

    • -5

      No, onboard WiFi.

    • +12

Hi it doesn't come with onboard wifi but a usb wifi dongle will be supplied.

      • +6

It should've said so in the description that it is a USB WiFi Dongle. Otherwise, people expect it to be onboard. I certainly would've.

        • +1

If you really must have it, you can get m.2 cards ranging anywhere between under $10 to $30 on Aliexpress, depending on what you want (i.e. if you want WiFi 6E + BT5.2)

        • Yeah I was expecting my 7060 to have wifi which it didn’t. Just picked up a cheap usb dongle from Amazon but I have it connected to Ethernet anyways so I don’t really need it. But it would’ve been nice to know that there’s no wifi

  • Thanks, I was a bit disappointed when i missed out on an ebay sale but this is better.

    • The eBay sales were heaps better imo

  • I am thinking of jumping on the 9600T, what your thoughts ozb community? I need it for my personal admin use, emails, shopping and the usual low profile stuff.

    • +2

Easily fine. I’m using it to run a few servers and home automation, this is fine for browsing and light work.

  • +1

Any discounted 12th gen+ units available?

    • +3

Most businesses lease/buy PCs for 3-5 years so you’ll need to wait a bit longer before 12th gen PCs show up en masse.

  • Would this arrive before Xmas?

  • -1

can I put a rtx 3050 6gb LP with this?

also for 40 extra yall think its worth going 16gb ram and 256gb ssd

    • +3

The GPU is bigger than the entire case, so no

      • lol ic thanks for letting me know

  • +3

I'd probably save the $50 and go the 8500T, you're not missing out on anything, then get a bigger SSD. You can have 1 M.2. drive and one 2.5" SATA drive in this.

The front USB-C port is also USB 3.1 Gen2 which is 3.2 Gen1? Either way its 10Gbit so you could hookup an external enclosure to it or a DAS box.

  • Can these machines do jellyfin transcoding?

    • Yes, I've been running a 9500T based system for plex and it can handle 4k transcoding just fine. 8500T has the same quick sync chip so it should be the same.

      • thanks mate

    • Yep. Look for chips that have intel UHD 630. I think most of these processors do.

  • 2 x DP port

    :(

no HDMI, good for streaming, most TVs (if not all) have HDMI only

    • +3

      $11

4K DisplayPort to HDMI Cable Adapter 1M, JSAUX

      https://amzn.asia/d/7zA5NhM

There’s others cheaper. I got an adapter for $4 does the job

      • Spend a few extra dollars on an active converter, the one you linked only does 30hz at 4k. Wavelink does one on Amazon that I know works at 4k60hz, and does audio too which these sometimes lack.

  • +1

Is it worth upgrading 8gb ram if it's used for emails/word/temp photo storage?

  • Which would suggest for an unraid box, running plex, home assistant and blue iris (nvr)?

    • +2

none, if you want to run unraid get something that has SATA ports and drive bays.

    • +1

Intel n100 or n5095 motherboard (about $180 from aliexpress), jonsbo n3 or n4 case (8-12 drive bays), 16GB RAM ($80 for sodimm) and SFX PSU ($200)

  • I got a 7070 for $140 last month. Upgraded the RAM, added an SSD, and put in a low profile RX 6400 GPU. Works great as a Steam gaming console.
Note that these are very particular when it comes to the RAM you get. The Crucial website has a selector tool to let you know which RAM to buy.

  • What's the diff between used and refurb in terms of condition?

    • +1

No standard definition… my experience is the refurb was assembled from parts even though it should be better than used, both are 1 step away from landfill.

      • You would hope that refurb means tested and working at least.

  • Would this be a good buy for a batocera machine or are the mini PC's the go?

    • +1

Batocera works well on these mini PCs. You can emulate up to Wii U, with occasional frame dips in demanding titles.

      • Appreciate the response!

        • +1

If you search for ETA Prime or Retro Game Corps on YouTube, you'll find several videos showcasing the capabilities of these exact models.

  • +1

I would go for the non T version, it also has 16GB RAM instead of 8.

    https://metrocom.com.au/shop/computers-tablets-networking/de…

    • +1

People aren't buying these for performance… they're buying as low power draw compute… so 50% less power for 12% less compute and 25% less heat is better.

  • Can these Dell Optiplex mini PC's in T & non T version operate in harsh non air conditioned environments, ie 40 heat wave conditions?

    • It will work. Just make sure it is kept free of dust inside, as the fan will be working harder.
I think officially the operating range spec is 10 to 35C.

  • I really want to get in on these Dell PCs but my main use case would be hobby web development projects that are essentially tools that help me and a few others friends/family, so they would need to be reachable via the internet. I'm not too fussed if it does go down. Would anyone know if these are okay to run all the time, and if such an idea is viable to run from home (securely?)

    • Sure. The main consideration is idle power consumption, which is under 10W for these. You could also use an old laptop as your server if you have one in the shed. They don't need much ram/cpu.

  • Looking at something at this for my first plex server. Thoughts on this vs lenovo m93p?

    • +1

      Definitely this one.

Lenovo M93P is 4th gen Intel, whereas these are 7th gen.

Intel 7th gen is the sweet spot for budget Plex servers since they're capable of 8bit and 10bit H265/HEVC encoding and decoding. With the iGPU, they'll easily handle a few 4K transcodes at once.

  • +3

How do these perform compared to the n100 mini pc. Which also float in the sub $200 price range. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/877170

    • +1

2 extra cores, and the cores are a bit faster.

For a desktop, these have the advantage of 32G (or maybe 64G) ram capacity 16G (officially) in most N100 devices.

    • +1

The N100 is more power efficient and supports AV1 decoding.

    • +1

You get a quality BIOS, quality manufacturing, good spare parts, and a better CPU.

Those Chinese made PCs have both quality and malware issues.

  • Any full-size tower deals @MetroCom ?

  • bought multiple unit 7060 micro in the past few month for the company use, they are great. @MetroCom, which one of those come with the onboard PCI wifi/bluetooth card? Keen to get another few more.

    • Hi unfortunately none of them comes with onboard wifi but they will come with a dual band USB wifi and bluetooth dongle.

  • Planning anything for 10th gen tiny ?

  • +1

Installed mac os sequoia on 7070 micro. Excellent Mac mini.

  • @MetroCom if I spec up a system with 32GB memory is that 2 x 16GB or 1 x 32GB DIMMs?

    • It will be 2x16.

  • How come none of these Dell optiplex have onboard wifi? Really wanting to get one but the USB-wifi is a bit of a let down.

I'm assuming they were deployed as fixed workstations and run by ethernet, but still a bit weird that they don't have wifi…

    • They're all old office workstations, they're generally going to have an ethernet connection to them not wifi

The cards are like $40 on Ebay if you really want one
