    390MB won't go f <disconnected>

    • You need a different plan for more than 390MB.

    • works great for my watch standalone plan

      • How is that possible? I thought watches only work on post-paid plans.

    • I remember back in 2009 when Telstra offered 200MB at 256kbps for $29, and you were paying through the nose if you exceeded your 200MB quota

  • +1

    +++ATH

Even in the 90s, it would still take you 32hrs to download 390MBs at 33.6kbps.

And it would take a while to load this much data off a CD-ROM.

Whats 390MB these days? 1 x 7 min Youtube video LOL

    • +4

The amount of data YouTube uses depends on the video quality, length, and optimization settings:

144p: Uses 80 MB per hour
240p: Uses 200 MB per hour
360p: Uses 300 MB per hour
480p: Uses 500 MB per hour
720p (HD): Uses 870 MB per hour
1080p (Full HD): Uses 1.65 GB per hour
4K (Ultra HD): Uses up to 3 GB per hour

Foxtel FHD uses 1GB every 10 minutes of streaming. A movie is typically 10 to 15 GB.

    390mb???

    • This plan is not for browsing or downloading.

      • +5

        It's hardly for calling either…

      • +3

        Its for mocking.

  • +7

This ozbargain browsing session to post this comment used 390MB

also available at Telstra Plus rewards store for 5400 points or collect 130 points if you buy there, https://plus.telstra.com.au/rewards/explore/25846, remember to choose the $39 kit not the $13 one.

    • +1

I was looking earlier but couldn't find the casual plan listed. Only the 7-day or 28-day plan for $13 or $39. How did you find the casual plan?

      • +3

buy the $39 kit, and activate as a 6 months casual plan.

      • New customers only i think.

  • +4

Nice, this looks like a cheap way to keep an outgoing second number for online dates and such.
Always a little annoying when someone you've just met doesn't use WhatsApp and you need to decide if they're worth a $10 recharge.

    • +1

      Amaysim has a $10/365 day plan: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/777559

      • +4

No included text messages! For only $13 I can date 70 girls over the next 6 months and send them each two SMS's. 'Where do you want to meet?' and 'On my Way'. And it still only cost me $13! :)

        • +3

I can date 70 girls over the next 6 months

Combined with your $6 Telstra Lite 2 you will be a real woman magnet* for only $19.

          * T&Cs apply

  • Any clue if we have any deadline on the activation date?

    • No deadline requirement listed except for the expiry date of the SIM card. Don't know the expiry date but it would be new stock from Oct 2024.

    • Says activate by 10 March 2025

      • Where did you see that on the casual plan? I saw the activate by date on the 28-day and long life plans but couldn't see an activate date for the casual plan.

    • +1

Mine arrived and says expiry date is Oct 2026

  • +4

Great to just keep number active on the cheap to receive SMS codes etc

    • wouldn't amaysim be better then? unless you really need Telstra

      • Is Amaysim cheaper..?

      • What are the main differences with telstra, optus and vodafone?

Also do they all dont work inside hospital?

        • Telstra and Optus usually work best in buildings because they use lower frequencies that travel through walls easier, Vodafone is quite sucky for that.

          • @Dyl: Thanks when i wqs with boost ( now bought by telstra) also it didnt have any bars in hospital. Is this normal or something wrong with my phone

            • @ATTS: Normal if through too many walls (ie inner parts of hospital, not near window). Hospital should have WiFi usually

Band 28 works in doors best, make sure your phone supports this

              • +1

@Dyl: Thanks, yeah didnt like using public wifi thats why

How do i check band28. It is a samsung s21 galaxy

Does it toggle auto between bands or need to be manually activated

      • Amaysim is cheaper until you accidentally set it to active for calls out.
But is great for 2FA codes

    • Also incoming calls while overseas via WiFi calling

      • This doesn't work does it? WiFi calling requires you to still be registered on the network I thought

        • it worked for me while i was in India. even when my phone was on airplane mode with WiFi on

          • @hopper: Awesome, will try this next time I travel with a Telstra sim.

It didn't work on Felix. Required me to connect to a network, then charged roaming rates even on WiFi (used my 100 roaming minutes).

That's why Telstra, AusPost and Qantas should be nationalised.

    • Will it help though?

Australia Post is a Corporate Commonwealth Entity for the purposes of the PGPA Act.
Australia Post is wholly owned by the Australian Government represented by two Shareholder Ministers, the Minister for Finance and the Minister for Communications,
Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts.
      Source: https://www.finance.gov.au/government/government-business-en…

    • -1

They all were nationalised, and were a disaster. That's why they were privatised.

      • Then, keep rolling and crying here for their jokes.

        • Back then, before mobile phones, there was a two year waiting list for a landline from Telstra. If you wanted to call overseas at Christmas you had to book the call three months ahead and pay $2 a minute.

    • -3

      should be nationalised.

You should visit a socialist utopia like Cuba where they do exactly that and see how the quality of life compares. You're going to be in for a huge surprise…

  • +5

Geez this is a plan so bad it basically only exists to scam your nan like the $40 a month landline she also doesn't use

  • +2

Good for a children's smart watch, if used for emergencies only and avoiding data.

  • Can it be used on Apple watch?

    • @hopper Still no? I think only Android/Samsung.

  • +3

You gotta turn off your mobile data otherwise updates will deplete your allowance in one minute.

  • +2

I have a Kogan SIM for my day to day but I also use this casual plan to get Telstra coverage when I go rural.

It's good to have it for semi-emergencies: needing to urgently contact family, roadside assistance, getting directions to your rural AirBnB etc.

    • Oh would satelite phone be more suited for emergencies?

      • I carry a PLB when I go truly remote. The Telstra SIM is more for trips out to the countryside.

        • Oh yes the beacon. Thanks i forgot about that. I remember some places let you borrow the beacon for free. Is that still the case

          • @ATTS: Not that I'm aware of. I know of places you can rent them from for a fee.

  • +1

    Honestly…

I would consider it for emergencies if it were double the data… But this as a laughable amount.

  • "That's why Telstra, AusPost and Qantas should be nationalised."

Auspost is owned by federal govt.

Telstra/telecom/PMG was owned by federal govt according to historical references

    • As were OTC, the overseas calls part of Telstra.

  • +1

Purchased! Thanks OP. A lot better than the similar Optus offering.

  • This is the same company that used to charge 15c per megabyte on mobile. I see not much has changed since those dark days

  • Wake up, Telstra.

  • +2

Cheapest deal for keeping your number active overseas on vowifi. Can receive calls for free for 6 months, plus make a few calls and reply to bank verification texts..

Also apparently stays active for 3 months after expiry before you need to recharge.

A burner number for alternate tobacco distributers, recreational medicine suppliers or Middle East zealots who no longer like their company supplied model.

  • +1

Does anyone know if you can add a data pack to this?
I have Felix as a main line, but would love a long life Telstra that I can add a data pack to when I go rural..

    • Yea, you can buy data packs on this. Theres an expiry limit that kills the value though. $5 for 7 days (1gb). or $20 for 28 days.

      • +1

Ah ok - then the original plan expires with the new pack? That’s a shame. I’ll stick with Aldi for the second sim for now then.. the PAYG credit sits for a year on Aldi.

  • +1

This plan is like a one night stand ( or rather a one hour stand) which you can use anytime in a 6 month period. Very lucrative indeed.

  • Has anyone been able to purchase the eSim directly instead of getting a physical sim? The website promts take me through an endless loop. Android device.

  • Dose anyone have trouble to activate the sim? When input the contact detail it kept saying: It looks like you have provided your email address some time back. The email dose not match the record blablabla…. Tried some email already. Now I have to book an appointment to visit the store.

    • Sorry to hear. Have you tried calling Telstra on 13 22 00?

      • +1

Fixed. I went to Telstra shop today and fixed.

  • Haven't been a direct Telstra customer for a while. Can you still use prepaid credit to make Google Play purchases?

  • To the person who reported the deal as expired, it still shows $13 under "casual plan". Will expire end of today.

  • Sorry for a stupid question but i could not find a purchase button for the eSim option for my watch

  • error when trying to check out for me

    • I tried other physical SIMs eg $2 and $39 and also can't check out.
The eSIM for this $13 casual plan seems to be working.

      • Does it show $13 in the cart? It comes up as $39 for me
