Need Work for 2 Months

Just throwing it out there to get some ideas. I'm a teacher, working as a CRT the last 5 months. Now I need something to keep me going until school starts again at the beginning of February.

I'm not super fit anymore, so I can't do the labouring/warehouse jobs I used to before I started teaching. I used to drive a ute as a courier, but that was a long time ago. Thinking driving again. Have applied for a ton of places on SEEK, and have joined a bunch of agencies, no luck. Any ideas/advice? Given I only need 2 months work my options seem to be very limited. My car isn't flash enough for UBER, and I really don't want to do the UBER eats thing if I can avoid. I live in Melbourne.

My students think I'm funny, not as funny as I think I am of course lol

That was popular before You Tube.

    • I did start applying months ago, I only finshed working a few weeks ago. I was hoping I could have picked something up by now, but I haven't had any luck yet.

    House sitter over Xmas holiday?

    Dog walker?

Lawnmower/yardkeeper? (Owner to supply mower and tools) - I know you said you’re not fit anymore, but I think this is still reasonable.

Flat pack (ikea or similar) builder?

    Nice model?

    Professional gambler?

There’s an elderly lady in my neighbourhood that walks 8 little dogs - I guess need to find the right fit… like 2-3 big rotties or huskies is prob not going to be ideal

Or 6 white boomers. Oh wait. That sounds more like the Footy Show

      • +9

Well it's a great way to get fit. I wasn't very fit when I started mowing lawns but a few years later I am in the best shape of my life and feeling great. Good honest healthy work that is also very satisfying. Also pays a lot more than most people think.

Private tutoring in your local area? Is that a thing over the holiday period?

    • I think the OP is a relief teacher so not specialized in a certain subject in demand.

You’re encouraged to include the top 10 locations you would like to work in (postcode/suburb/electoral division). You can also indicate days and times you would be available for work as there are different roles in the weeks before and after polling day.

    • Is there some coming up?

      • Not likely until February 2025, at the very earliest.

Pet sitting is highly in demand in the school holidays.

Cats or older dogs that dont need much exercise would be your best target market if you arent fit. If you had more time it would be worth getting a TAFE certificate in animal care, but people may be desperate enough to take you on with no experience and no reviews

Mad Paws and pawshake apps would get you started. Or local facebook groups.

    • I live in an apartment, I would have to stay in their home I'm assuming. Really avoiding working with the public if I can lol, but it's a great idea if I get desperate enough

      • +3

I’m sure there’s plenty of different arrangements but the sitters I’ve used just come to my place 1-2 times a day.

      • You don't need to.

For cats all you need is a visit once per day, clean litter box, top up food probably only take 30 mins per visit.

If you rack up a few of those in the neighbourhood you can get some good income as they're usually about $30-$40 per cat per day.

        Try registering through Madpaws.

Also, they might ask you to organise a Police Check.

      • Staying in someone’s home could be good. All your utilities paid for. Especially good if they have a pool.

      • 'Really avoiding working with the public if I can lol, but it's a great idea if I get desperate enough'

in that case I recommend working with the private ;-)

Have you done it? It looks kinda dodgy

      • +1

It looks dodgy at first glance, sure, but it isn't. There is a starter assessment and many people who flunk it will probably then get annoyed and call it a scam.

          nice try Skynet

    • Are they legit? Seen advertisements around the place. I used to do tasks for Appen a few years ago but they were mind numbingly boring, I am guessing this may be similar

      • Yeah it's legit. Been on the platform for over a year. Some of the work is mind numbing though, and other stuff, extremely difficult and out of my league (I'm not smart enough).

    School holiday programs / camps.

    • I'm a high school teacher, I'm really trying to avoid the primary age activities lol, and camps aren't my thing. I mean if I desperate enough I may have to lol

Tutoring the students who sit up the back of your classes

    • Not over the summer holidays - tutoring work dries up then too.

  • You get a job as a full-time teacher, then you get paid for these holidays. Plenty of vacancies. Sure there are pros to CRT work, but there are cons (like these couple of months no pay).

    • +1

I was ongoing until the beginning of term 3, I had to move into a regional area, and took a CRT position. Definitely pros and cons, no meetings or planning documents were nice lol. I'm studying next year, so I'll have to stay CRT unfortunately.

      • +1

100% the pros are no extra work like meetings, report etc. There is some CRT work and the money is good, so it is enticing but then you lose work over the holidays.

Regional areas are great as well because once you are in a school because there is more choice of schools without having to deal with traffic for travel. My wife is a primary school teacher and works in the next major (ish) town, and home is 10 mins from her school. She has been there 3 years now and its great, the school is good, so are the people. Better than the suburban schools.

  • +4

See if any of the OSHC in your area want extra staff for the holiday period, especially department run services.

I'm already seeing posts on local groups asking for tutors for next years Naplan. Lot's of parents prepared to spend $$$ thinking it will get their kids ahead.

    • Why do they care about NAPLAN scores?
Is this because private schools are using the scores for admission? So primary school age wanting tuition?

      • Not just private schools, some specialist programs in public schools ask for NAPLAN results. No idea how heavily they weigh them when making the decision, but they ask for them.

    • -1

Who in their right mind cares about NAPLAN?

Seen some amazing engineering and coding students totally bomb on NAPLAN tests. Made zero difference to their future pathway.

The only failure is NAPLAN itself.

      • They do NAPLAN in University now? I did my last NAPLAN in grade 9 and managed to get through my engineering course without having to do any NAPLAN.

        • Forget it, he's rolling.

        • They were in the bottom percentile according to NAPLAN in year 9..and then later went on to build some amazing projects for a project entry into University.
NAPLAN is just trying to put all humans in the same box. All it shows is which students are good at completing NAPLAN type tests. It's rubbish.

          • @tunzafun001: I did amazing in NAPLAN and didn’t need to do any projects to get into the course because I graduated with a great ATAR. I graduated with honours as you’d expect from a NAPLAN prodigy.

NAPLAN is a good indicator of academic success which is a good indicator of how good of an engineering student you’ll be. As an engineer working in an engineering company most of us fit in that same box. Obviously NAPLAN is not a crystal orb which can predict the future and just because your son or your nephew or whatever got a bad NAPLAN score doesn’t mean he’s a dunce and will never succeed. There are myriad confounding factors but on the whole it’s broadly accurate.

Consider registering with hireup or mable, which both provide support workers to elderly or people with disability (many of whom are children). You may already meet the training/qualification requirements as a teacher. You decide your own hours and it pays well; and you're doing something nice for people that need help.

  • I was ongoing until the beginning of term 3, I had to move into a regional area, and took a CRT position…
…I'm a high school teacher, I'm really trying to avoid the primary age activities

So I assume that means you are a fully qualified high school teacher that for some reason can't find students to tutor prior to start of school next year?

I'm already seeing posts on local groups asking for tutors for next years Naplan. Lot's of parents prepared to spend $$$ thinking it will get their kids ahead.

This pretty much fulfills all of your job requirements doesn't it? Or are you living in a town/suburb where no parent wants to give their kids a kickstart into their next year?

  • Is there any reason why you don’t want to do Uber eats? I do it and only do cokes shops, I don’t do any take away deliveries, most of the time it works out to be $25 an hour

    • -7

Dignity maintenance? I mean right or wrong, there is a stigma in the gig economy.

    • I live in the CBD, I don't feel comfortable driving around here, and I don't have an e bike. I'm also just not cut out for that type of work. It's not for everyone realistically. I don't have the temperament or the patience with people.

      • +1

Downvoted lol. I swear the Internet is full of some dipshits. I can't even ask a simple question, this isn't reddit. I'm in a position where I can be a little particular about what I do for this short amount of time, I don't want to work 38 hours a week, just a little extra cash. If I choose not to do jobs where I have to deal with Karens and the type of morons who troll this post, well what can I say?

        • +3

The last line about patience for people seems particularly interesting for a teacher.

        • +3

Sounds like you're the Karen tbh

Ego pretty bruised when the people you asked for free help online don't do exactly what you want.

Maybe you should ask a mod to delete their comments?

      • They great thing that I like about it is you don’t actually have to deal with people majority of the time. When I do “deal” with people it’s generally to just hand them their groceries.
You don’t have to do it in the city you could drive to a different location to do it.

'I don't have the temperament or the patience with people'

most of the time it works out to be $25 an hour

I'd bloody hope so given minimum wage is $24.10.

        Plus casual loading, plus super.

        • +3

and using your own assets. that is truly an awful pay rate, I didn't realise Uber Eats drivers were that seriously underpayed.

          • @gromit: The $25 is after i’ve factored in all those losses.
No way would I do it if it ended up being below minimum wage before losses.

The other night I averaged $48 over a 4 hour period.

I’m always confused when I see a news article where a driver claims they are making like $10 an hour. If you look carefully enough they are usually a paid actor

            • -2

              @Nuggies: 'The other night I averaged $48 over a 4 hour period'

unclear - did you average $48 per hour, or $12 per hour ?

              • +1

@Hangryuman: If $25 was stated as being after expenses, what do you think? Take your time.

              • @Hangryuman: In a conversation about an hourly rate, who the heck would say "averaged $48 over a 4 hour period" and mean "averaged $48 per 4 hours"?

              • @Hangryuman: Sorry meant to say $48 an hour over a 4 hour period. So I made $192

            • +2

@Nuggies: The twist is they're only earning $9 an hour as an actor.

    • Most of the time? So you are often getting less than min wage?

      • I’ve never received less than minimum wage. By most of the time I mean sometimes I can earn $40-$50 an hour.
These figures always factor in losses too. No way would I do it if I was getting below minimum wage after factoring losses

        • +3

$40-$50 is not to bad if that is including your insurance and car running costs/maintenance/tyres/servicing etc in that calculation, I have seen some people use ridiculously low numbers for those to claim they are earning good money. e.g. I ran the numbers with a retired mate who was looking to do it part time. He excluded rego/tyres/service/insurance/depreciation etc and just put in fuel costs as he claimed "I have to do those things anyway" to come up with a number that made his pay look way better than reality
