Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID & Numeric Keypad $199 + Delivery ($0 to Metro/ C&C/ In-Store/ OnePass) @ Officeworks

340

Clearance sale at Officeworks Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID (black) lightning cable charging. It's the previous generation but functionally identical to the update which comes with USB C charging currently selling for $279.

Only a few left in certain Officeworks stores, but I notice the same price on Amazon.

HOWEVER, if you combine this with a recent targeted AMEX $30 rebate for Officeworks purchases over $140, you can pick this up for $169 out of pocket.

Yes probably still overpriced for what you get, but the increasing convenience of Touch ID with passkeys could make it worthwhile if that's what you're looking for. Picked one up from Officeworks North Ryde today.

The old version will also work on older versions of macOS.

The USB-C version only works on macOS Sequioa (15.0 or 15.1).

    • Whaaat? That’s wild..!

  • TouchID is a great idea, but it isn't permitted on initial boot/power on.
You have to type in your password.

    • Don’t turn it off?

      • +2

that's the real solution. You hardly need to turn off a Mac especially the arm ones.

This is no different than on the MacBooks

      • +1

Or an iPhone or iPad with Touch ID

    • This is true of every device on the market because the authentication stuff is encrypted. Who turns off a mac anyway?

  • +1

    Same price on Amazon

  • Same price at Amazon. https://www.amazon.com.au/Apple-Keyboard-Numeric-Keypad-Sili…

Fun fact; Amazon normally charges $30 more for the black version than the white version just because they can.

        Just regular racism

        • +3

          Just regular capitalism

    • The RRPs vary

Not true, It's not Amazon charging $30 more - it’s Apple. On Apple’s official site, the black versions of Mac accessories are all listed as being $30+ more expensive than the white ones.

      • It’s because they were bundled with “Pro” level Mac’s, so Apple charges accordingly for the colour.

      • Apparently the black has more anodisation on the colours making them more expensive but who knows. Besides, black attracts fingerprint oils more so actually inferior to the white

Logitech MX Keys keyboard is better anyway, as you can switch between 3 different machines just by pressing a button - and works with older versions of MacOS.

    • +2

Careful, you will trigger people with comments like this.

      • I'm sure it would void the macs warranty

    • +4

Or MX Mechanical. MXM mini is awesome.

Except one thing - it doesn't have Touch ID. Apple really should provide a Touch ID dongle for desktop users.

      • I remember someone removed the Touch ID “button” from a broken keyboard and turned it into an isolated button. It was very tempting to try to make for myself!!!

        • Yes: https://youtu.be/hz9Ek6fxX48

Way too expensive. And it’s really hard to source broken keyboard with functional Touch ID module and control board. People just throw them away instead of selling them.

  • anyone knows why this product is under clearance sale? It’s only out for a year or so.

    • +2

Apple is retiring their lightning port.

      • -1

It’s actually usb-c that is on clearance.

        • +3

Well remember, if you believe it it's not a lie.

        • +2

This model that's on clearance uses a usb-c to lightning cable - meaning the keyboard's charging port still uses lightning connector. The updated model uses a usb-c charging cable.

  • My current keyboard has no touch ID. It works fine. But I'm still tempted to get this one!!

    Spend $199, or save?! Help

    • +1

      Spend now and regret later.

    • +1

Buy. Touch ID is a game changer for me but I’m logging in on my desktop tens of times a day. It also makes it easier to adopt a longer chain login password which is probably more secure given I use iCloud Keychain.

    • +2

      Get an Apple watch instead.

  • Is this a backlit keyboard ? It doesn’t say it is?? Thanks

    • +1

      Perry sure it’s not.

    • +1

      Not back lit

    • +2

It’s not. Another reason can’t justify this over Logitech MX keys.

  • I’m fairly sure TouchID requires Apple Silicon so this may not work on Intel Macs.

    • +2

The keyboard will, the Touch ID won’t

      • +1

Thanks for adding that clarification (as I should have).

  • The new ones are $249, any discounts that will bring that down close to $199?

  • This keyboard contains old layout, the new one have function key at the left bottom corner while this one is above delete key.

  • According to reviews there's one major difference with the black vs white keyboard… the black ones show fingerprint oils like crazy esp. for daily use. Similar to MacBooks I guess (a pet hate… and then the most used keys get shiny over time). It's one thing Logitech got right with their MX Keys… no fingerprint marks.
