Why are you posting pricing for a very small fibre network that's in the USA and no longer being rolled out? It's irrelevant.

        • For price comparisons.

          • +3

            @jv: It makes no difference.
            Number 1, it's US dollars
Number 2, that price doesn't include state taxes.
Number 3, it's one of the smallest fibre networks in the world which they pulled the pin on rolling out further, years ago.

            • -1

              @SimAus007:

              It makes no difference.

It gives you an idea about how much off the mark our prices and speeds are…

              • @jv: They've hardly spent anything rolling it out and it loses money, hence why they've pulled the pin on it.
No comparison to a network that's thousands of times the size.

                • -1

                  @SimAus007:

No comparison to a network that's thousands of times the size.

Economies of scale would make it even cheaper then…

              • +1

@jv: You posted the prices of what is realistically a PoC rollout of fiber and expect it to be comparable to a national network?

      • @jv - 1 Gbps is definitely not $70 in most of the US. Verizon charge $90 USD (typically) for 1 Gbps, but some ISPs, such as Xfinity, charge as much as $116 in some parts of the country. Note that you'll get a discount on these prices if, for example, you're a Verizon mobile customer.

        • Verizon charge $90 USD (typically) for 1 Gbps

The point is the speeds are symmetrical there for that amount…

1000/1000, and not 1000/50 as they are here…

Verizon are charging $64.99 for this plan with a 4 year price lock…

    • Come on amaysim, offer some of the better plans that NBN already has! I'm on 100/40 with superloop, but even the NBN250 plan on amaysim only has ~22 up.

  • do we know which ISP/backbone is behind amaysim nbn?

    ah it's Optus

    • +1

      Optus.

      • +1

        'Yes'

  • +16

Why do they all discount for 6 months? So annoying, it creates serial disconnections, each 6 months they have incentive to move.
I just want a good service at reasonable price I can set and forget. I guess many will feel the same.

    • +1

This isn't an ISP issue, this is a human issue.

A few did 6 month promos and people started moving. Now, to stay competitive, most do 6-12 month promos - if they don't, they don't get new customers. Humans (especially this group, myself included) chase shiny deals.

If you offer new customers $80/mo continuously or $60/mo for 6 months + $90/mo after, a significant number go for the lower price. Now we're stuck.

(And no, they can't do $60/mo forever, that's a loss leader/no profit discount to get you in the door. They know most won't stay but some may, replacing the customers who left.)

      • +1

I'm happy to pay a premium for staying on the same provider. I am not happy to be ripped off for loyalty.

        • I am pretty sure it is nbn who also subsidies a 6 month discount for some reason. That is why almost all providers offer a 6 month discount. Only lately we started seeing 12 month discounts which i am not sure if it is nbn or just the providers taking the hit for the other 6 months.

          • @Save 50 Cent: NBN doesn't provide 6 month discounts, only $120 to the RSP for those switching to fibre to the premises, but no other customers.
6 & now some 12 month discounts are purely RSP driven to get new customers, as a certain number will stay after the discount and that's when they begin to make money on those customers.

    • Because a significant portion of people won't change after the promotion period.

  • -2

is it more expensive than Superloop for NBN100 &250?

    • +10

You obviously have a working internet connection so i am sure you can look it up in less than 2 minutes then do kindy math using these symbols: < > =

  • +3

I'll get this for a month and schedule a date to be on the Superloop deal.

    • doing the same

    • No strings attached? last I tried doing this with superloop, I was charged for the upcoming month as well (so for 2 months altogether) even though I cancelled before the 1st month completed

      • +1

As long you churn before the next billing you won't get charged by Amaysim.

  • +4

compared to superloop black friday sale:

    total ama 0 80 160 240 320 400 480 570 660 750 840 930

superloop is cheaper in long term

    • +5

but most churners move every 6 months, so this is cheaper. Also on 250mbps tier.

    • Agree with u. Except for those who don't stay long term (a lot of us here). The best scenario here is to take this up for a month (free) then do superloop from month 2.

do they credit check, notably for existing account holders with expired mobile sim?

    • Good question, I’m interested to know.

    • +1

      No, they don't credit check.

      • Do they verify your details by asking to enter the ID details? Or upload the ID later on?

        • +1

I do have amaysim mobile plan but they didn't ask for ID when I signed up for their NBN.

  • Might try it for month then move on

  • +3

    Easy to cancel?

    • Would also like to know

      • Just churn somewhere else and they will cancel for you? HFC

        • +2

Some providers require a notice to cancel or else you will be charged another month so don’t get caught out.

        • I don't pay for internet and have no intentions to "churn". Think I will give this deal a miss as it's too much hassle and I've been burnt in the past with these "free offers"".

  • I have tried one month free last time they offered. Can I churn it again?

One full month of free home internet from amaysim for new or existing customers with NBN eligible addresses

Is there a minimum period you need to stay with them to get that one month free?

  • +1

Their T&Cs are all over the place, website won't resolve the address and throws unexpected errors. Free headache with a free month..

  • New to NBN what's the process of setting up connection? Seems I'll have to buy my own modem

    • +1

Just sign up online or over the phone. Look up your address on nbn website or a provider to figure out what type of connection you have. If it is anything beside FTTN and FTTB, then you just need a routers (a modem will do the same job as they also do the routers functions but you’ll have fewer options and probably cost more for the same specs). A modem will be supplied by nbn (or would already have been supplied) and you hook up your router to it.
If FTTN or FTTB, you’ll need a modem.
You better off buying your own rather than get one from provider as they are never ‘free’. There will always be a string attached like staying for 24 months and you will end up paying more.

      • Thanks for the help! A quick look up on nbnco.com.au show FTTP and FTTN available at my address

        • FTTP fibre to the premises is great that means you have optical fibre all the way to a box they’ll install inside your house.
FTTN fibre to the node is not so great essentially that means fibre is only to one of those old Telstra post things with hundreds of copper lines attached (the way old phone connections used to be routed) in this instance you’ll need a modem/router and your speeds generally aren’t fantastic.
Basically they are the best and the worst options available on NBN.
From what I understand if you don’t have a connection at your property they don’t do FTTN anymore unless your area has very few connections and it’s not economical most likely you’ll end up with either FTTC and will have the option to upgrade to FTTP but there are always exceptions.

          • @Clarky77: FTTP sounds good. So is there like an additional cost for it or do you just get it for free with this deal? Also is it all free for them to come to my property and set up/install FTTP connection

            • @sub102: You need to first get nbn installed which is free unless you live in a new development, I wanted FTTP but they install whatever they determine is appropriate which for me was FTTC (fibre to the curb, which for me was directly in front of my property & they installed a brand new copper run to that nbn pit on the nature strip about 20 meters out so from my unit at the back of the property) I signed up on a 100/20 plan which was then eligible for a free upgrade but when I asked for the upgrade Telstra wanted to switch me to a lower speed plan until the upgrade which meant losing the discounts ect so I didn’t end up doing it.
But generally they don’t install FTTP in the forest instance, you’ll need to ask for it but there aren’t any costs involved.
I can get 100/40 without any issues even during peak times with FTTC but if you want more bandwidth you need to upgrade, I want to get FTTP for the lantecy improvement which is only an issue if you are a gamer I think, my son really wants the improvement.
Can anyone with a better understanding please share any extra info?

              • @Clarky77: Thanks. Who do you mean they in all this is it Telstra? In this case is it going Amaysim or Optus

                • @sub102: I used Telstra, but it won’t matter who the retailer is as they all just organise an appointment for NBN to do the connection.
Just sign up with AmaySim and organise an install, when they come tell them you really want a FTTP install but most likely they’ll install FTTC in this first instance then a day out so later call AmaySim and tell them you’d like to upgrade to FTTP and they’ll look up your property to see if you are eligible. Unfortunately you can’t see if your property is eligible until you’ve had NBN installed which to my mind is a waste of resources installing a FTTC only to a short time later pull out the copper and replace it with fibre and switch out the box ect?
But that’s what our efficient government overlords have determined is the best way to go about things ;)
                  Good Luck

                  • @Clarky77: Cheers mate so I guess my address' fttp eligibility does not mean much then. Will look for a modem/router and pull trigger on this if I find a good deal

            • @sub102: Amaysim is not on the nbn participating ISP list for the FTTP upgrades. You probably need to signup with a different ISP to get FTTP. nbn install the fibre optic cables and fibre NTD box for free. I recommend you purchase your own router. These 12-month deals are some OzBargain favourties.

              nbn 100/20 $69/Month, 100/40 $73/Month, 250/25 $79/Month, 1000/50 $89/Month for 12 Months (New Customers Only) @ Superloop.
nbn FTTN/FTTC to FTTP Upgrade & Plan (Select Locations): 100/20 $64.95/Month for 12 Months (New Customers) @ Leaptel.
              nbn FTTN/FTTC to FTTP Upgrade & Plan (Select Locations): 250/25 $79/M, 1000/50 $89/M for 12 Months @ Leaptel.

nbn FTTP step by step guide.

              • +1

@Twix: Thanks for letting me know. I don't think I'll care if its FTTP or else (not even sure about their differences as phone hotspot does it for me currently). Was just interested in this as it was free and have some visitors over the next few weeks. If you know of any cheap modem/router deals instead please share

                • @sub102: Basically FTTN speeds are faster the closer your home is to the nbn node and speeds gradually gets slower if your home is far away from the nbn node. FTTN speeds range anywhere from 12Mbps to 100Mbps download and 5Mbps to 40Mbps upload. FTTN can suffer from reliability problems and can dropout when it rains because it uses a mix of copper and fibre.

FTTP has faster speed tiers available all the way up to 1000Mbps download and 400Mbps upload with room to increase it, FTTP is the best for reliability and is not affected by bad weather. FTTP is fibre all the way to your home and has no copper. FTTP is replacing FTTN in the long term.

Before I give any modem/router recommendations I need you to lookup your location here. What is the number straight across from Premises Service Class? Is it number 1?

                  • @Twix: Cheers mate location info,

Premises technology Fibre To The Node
                    Premises service class 13
Premises service class description Serviceable by copper, infrastructure in place
Premises readiness Ready to connect to the nbn!

                    • @sub102: All good mate. FTTN will be setup if you join Amaysim. Joining someone else like Leaptel or Superloop will get you FTTN now and they will make an appointment for FTTP to be installed in the next few weeks. Reschedule if the installation date doesn't suit you. The 100/20 speed tier for $64.95/m or $69/m for 12-Months with Leaptel or Superloop is a better deal.

A 2nd hand Telstra smart modem gen 2 is a good VDSL2 modem for FTTN and they can be setup for FTTP. You can find them in the $0 to $50 range from FB marketplace and eBay. I wouldn't spend $140-$400 on a new VDSL2 modem/router because when you move to FTTP you don't need the VDSL2 modem component.

I would wait until you get FTTP before spending money on a new decent router.

                      • @Twix: I might have some old modems hanging around. Do you know if this will work which I had purchased back in the day

                        • @sub102: Nope, what else do you have?

By the way the Superloop deal ends tonight if you want to order it. The Leaptel deal doesn't have an expiry date.

                          • +1

@Twix: Sorry even if it were $69 per year I still won't have the need for it but thanks. I'll have to dig for the other modem I had

                            • @sub102: Are you only going to get nbn for the visitors and cancel when they leave?

                              • @Twix: Pretty much and also to try out and see how it really works out for me here.

found the other I had was just a router so I guess I'll need a separate modem anyway

                                • +1

@sub102: FTTN might be good enough or total crap hence why nbn are replacing it with FTTP. You don't really have any problems on FTTP.

Yeah just pickup a Telstra smart modem gen 2, factory reset it and set it up.

    • I was in the same situation a month or so back,
I signed up using Telstra which meant they provided a free modem and a first month satisfaction guarantee (no questions asked) so you get your money back if you cancel 1 day before the end of the first month.
The advantage is you’ll know what your connection type is with certainty and when you cancel using the variation guarantee you get to keep the modem/router which I believe you can hack/tweak to then use with other companies.
I ended up buying an Amazon eero 6 as it was only $99 on sale and you can easily add mesh extenders at any time and has really good reviews. There are newer better versions if you have the need/budget.
Basically Telstra was the only company that provided a modem but there were no extra costs and you could keep/return it at no cost if you cancel.
Otherwise if you are confident your connection is FTTC,FTTP or basement ect if you are in an apartment complex set your connection for a week or so away and find a good router online, there’s many threads on here with some good info about pros/cons.
      Good Luck

      • Thanks for the help! Just was looking at nbn as this was free. Will have to look out for a modem/router deal

    IPoE so easy switch process.

    Does amaysim NBN use CGNAT?
No, it doesn’t use CGNAT at this stage to deliver our home internet service, no need to opt-out!

    waiting for some manual escalation

    not worthy of your time

  • Would've tried but already moved to Superloop

Thanks OP, I was planning on starting a regular NBN connection in the new year, bought an eero 6 router and was waiting for a great 3+ month offer after getting it connected initially using Telstra satisfaction guarantee (the plan was to get a FTTP upgrade but they needed to switch me to a lower plan which would’ve cancelled any offers ect) so now I have a FTTC connection I’m going to set this up with AmaySim to test out the eero and hopefully get a FTTP upgrade then at the end of this month I’ll switch to MATE who also offer a first month satisfaction guarantee so that’s 2 months free.
My biggest issue now is getting that FTTP upgrade (I need low latency for my sons gaming when he stays with me more than I need bandwidth TBH 50mbps would be more than enough but it is nice to have more for those times you want to watch a 4K movie and download a big file super fast lol
I know many OzB members are experts at gaming the sign up offer system so please if you have any advice to help me longer term I’d love to hear your thoughts/experiences. Also love to know any companies I should avoid?
    Cheers guys!

PS. Just realised ASim are run by Optus, I still hold a grudge from 20 years ago when I used them for mobile, cable internet, Fetch ect bundled and when I moved they couldn’t offer me the same package (could only offer bad adsl connection) so I ended up using a different provider and told them if cable internet ever becomes available I’d be happy to return as I’d been with them for years.
Anyway long story short they decided I needed to pay out the remaining 13 months at full price (essentially paying for a service I didn’t use for 13 months) which I spend so much time trying to resolve amicably to no avail. Caused me issues signing up for mobile phone plans, getting loans ect ect for years.
In the end I managed to get it cleared from my credit and they wrote an apology letter and I got $500 compensation but the amount of effort and lawyers (I didn’t pay, I got help from a community financial support group who referred my case to another consumer advocacy group who did it pro bono) time it took meant nobody won.
I assume they aren’t what they used to be but I’ll never give them even 1c for as long as I live and am always happy to talk anyone else out of doing so if they are willing to listen to my rant lol

I will take 1 month free though with no contract assigned, happy to add to their expenses ;D

    • What a nightmare. Glad it worked it for you in the end. I can certainly understand why you would hold a life long grudge against Optus. I would go beserk if they tried to pull that crap on me.

For those who're wondering about cancellation, can cancel any time and keep using the service until the month end

Cancellation: You can cancel your plan at any time by notifying us. You will not receive a refund of
charges paid in advance for the remainder of your payment cycle, unless otherwise set out in our
agreement and subject to your consumer law rights. Once you have cancelled, you will retain access
to your service until the end of your renewal period.

    • that's in the general terms for this offer terms it would be good to have this clarified "1-month discount is not transferrable or redeemable for cash. Forfeited if your plan is cancelled."

      • I know their T&Cs are messed up as their website. But these T&Cs are under the same page where there's 1 month free offer listed. So I reckon, it applies to all the plans including the promotional ones. YMMV

        • the specific t&c's for this deal no point in making assumptions as these are the ones they can hold you to https://www.amaysim.com.au/content/dam/amaysim/documents/ter…

          • @Irishness: Chatted with their rep online-

Good day! Thank you for showing interest in amaysim home internet. I'll be glad to assist you on how to avail it and enjoy the ease of our service.
There is no locked in contract. The non-transferrable term means that if for instance you will activate the service and cancel it after few days and would like to apply it again if you decide to activate it again. You can cancel anytime and your service will be disconnected the day you out in the cancellation request. You cannot sign up again for the 1 month free promo, The promo had been forfeited already the first time you sign up.

So it would be better to cancel at the end of the billing period or a day before to retain access to the 1 month free offer

            • @Zapwap: That's all well and good but you still need to know how their billing cycle works to avoid a pre-emptive 2nd month charge.

            • @Zapwap: thanks good to know

    • When I cancel my amaysim nbn last month the service was disconnected within a minute while I was still chatting with them

  • +3

CS said no need to inform of cancellation if I churn to another provider any day before the next billing..

  • Can you set a future connection date?
