Great price for an AVR with Dirac. Shame its got no speaker pre-outs though (only has preouts for Zone2).

    • Nice catch! When I saw the pre-outs I thought it has speaker pre outs too.

Still, pretty good for the price!

I have this, and set it up using Dirac on my phone using the Pioneer app. I was unable to get Dirac on my Mac laptop to work with it.
So far, I like the AVR. Every now and then when using Nintendo Switch, the screen goes black for 3 seconds and comes back. I haven't tried to troubleshoot to find if this is the TCL TV or the AVR.
I paid $1499 about 6 weeks ago, which was the best price around at the time.

Try better quality and shorter HDMI cables between all the devices.

I was getting intermittent drops as you describe, and this was resolved with better cables (with no splitters).

        • Thanks. I will try a better cable for the Nintendo. I have good ones for AVR to TV and PC to AVR.

Can it output as 5.1.4 atoms setup?

    • Yes.

    • +1

Yes. Page 25 and 31 of the manual show 5.1.4 with a variety of options (top front, top middle, dolby-enhanced…).
I'm running it with 5.1.2 plus zone 2.

Does anybody know how this compares to the Denon X3800h?

Looking up upgrade from my X1700h for Dirac and dual subs

    • I'm thinking of x3800h also. I saw on sale for $1999 at Selby but has gone back up to $2499.

      • Speak to them - they'll very likely offer it at $1999

    • +6

X3800H is more on the level of the Onkyo RZ50 or Pioneer VSXLX505, so there is a few levels of separation between them.

      Without comparing directly:
      - Denon doesn't come with Dirac onboard (paid extra), but can be upgraded to Direc Live Bass Control (with multiple subs, see next point).
      - Denon has indépendant subwoofer outs.
      - Denon has higher power.
      - Denon has pre outs in case you want to have more channels or need more power.
      - Denon can set crossovers independently.

I'd get the Denon, especially since you are looking for the dual subs. Just keep in mind you will need to pay more than just sticker price to also get Dirac.

Favourable reviews for this online everywhere. At this price not bad, not bad at all.

Finally something that will drive my IMAX home theatre

  • Anyone know of a receiver with a built in CD player, that's much cheaper than this? Something entry level

    • Unlikely to find anything like that that isn't heavily used.

Unless you'd be content with something like this

  • Should be a very nice receiver. Would have picked this over the NR7100 (although it's pretty nice too)

  • +2

Damn, I was thinking of selling mine (moving house and no need for a surround system any more), but it's now available new for half price!
I can recommend it though - it was on my shortlist as it integrated nicely with Google home, Spotify connect etc.. and it's been performing really well for the 2 years I've had it.
Dirac for room correction works really well too!

  • +1

This is Pioneer's equivalent to Onkyo NR7100 (same company, different brands).

Main difference being that the speaker crossover (where it passes off low frequency to the subwoofer) is set independently on the Onkyo (can set Front, Centre, Rears at different frequencies) vs local on the Pioneer (all speakers are level matched).

This may or may not be a big deal to you. At this price point, I'd think a lot of people might not really care.

  • I just picked up an Onkyo 7100, it was between this model or the Onkyo for +$100: online comparisons mentioned that you couldn't modify the crossover frequency on each channel and had to set a global crossover frequency on the pioneer: the Onkyo could do it per channel. For the small price difference I thought it was worth it but for $300 I dont really know.

Edit: I am a mega noob just entering HT for the first time so I don't really know what I'm doing - both options have dirac which I read is good so we'll see.

Would love a Yamaha equivalent at this discount

  • Hmm tempted. Or should I order the VSX-LX805 for US$1500 from bestbuy + pay around $350 to a reshipper? Just heard some are not trustworthy which makes me hesitate.

    • Voltage?

    • +1

Wouldn't that be 110v? You'd need a transformer. We really get done here in Aus re: prices..

  • AVR and speaker packs. Does anyone still remember $300 Sherwood receivers from JB hifi and $150 5.1 speaker packs from eBay ("dream acoustics”).

  • Just wondering if this is a big step up from my Yamaha RX-V6A which I got from a deal here last year or so.

    • +1

Well it has extra channels of you want 4 Atmos speakers in your ceiling

  • There are reports of HDMI hand shaking issues with this AVR. Are owners having problems with loss of sync and black screens requiring switching or power cycling?
