Great price for an AVR with Dirac. Shame its got no speaker pre-outs though (only has preouts for Zone2).

    • Nice catch! When I saw the pre-outs I thought it has speaker pre outs too.

Still, pretty good for the price!

    • +2

I have this, and set it up using Dirac on my phone using the Pioneer app. I was unable to get Dirac on my Mac laptop to work with it.
So far, I like the AVR. Every now and then when using Nintendo Switch, the screen goes black for 3 seconds and comes back. I haven't tried to troubleshoot to find if this is the TCL TV or the AVR.
I paid $1499 about 6 weeks ago, which was the best price around at the time.

      • +3

Try better quality and shorter HDMI cables between all the devices.

I was getting intermittent drops as you describe, and this was resolved with better cables (with no splitters).

        • Thanks. I will try a better cable for the Nintendo. I have good ones for AVR to TV and PC to AVR.

        • +2

At the Switch's resolution it would have to be an absolutely dire cable

  • +2

Can it output as 5.1.4 atoms setup?

    • Yes.

    • +2

Yes. Page 25 and 31 of the manual show 5.1.4 with a variety of options (top front, top middle, dolby-enhanced…).
I'm running it with 5.1.2 plus zone 2.

Does anybody know how this compares to the Denon X3800h?

Looking up upgrade from my X1700h for Dirac and dual subs

    • I'm thinking of x3800h also. I saw on sale for $1999 at Selby but has gone back up to $2499.

      • +1

Speak to them - they'll very likely offer it at $1999

    • +8

X3800H is more on the level of the Onkyo RZ50 or Pioneer VSXLX505, so there is a few levels of separation between them.

      Without comparing directly:
      - Denon doesn't come with Dirac onboard (paid extra), but can be upgraded to Direc Live Bass Control (with multiple subs, see next point).
      - Denon has indépendant subwoofer outs.
      - Denon has higher power.
      - Denon has pre outs in case you want to have more channels or need more power.
      - Denon can set crossovers independently.

I'd get the Denon, especially since you are looking for the dual subs. Just keep in mind you will need to pay more than just sticker price to also get Dirac.

Favourable reviews for this online everywhere. At this price not bad, not bad at all.

    • Thanks for the kind words! The VSX-LX305 has definitely earned its reputation for delivering great performance and features. At $1,295, it’s an excellent deal for anyone looking to upgrade their home theatre setup. Let us know if you have any questions - we’re here to help!

Finally something that will drive my IMAX home theatre

  • Anyone know of a receiver with a built in CD player, that's much cheaper than this? Something entry level

    • +1

Unlikely to find anything like that that isn't heavily used.

Unless you'd be content with something like this

      • Yeah that’s fair. I have a record player and speakers already, but I need to be able to play CDs. Was looking at a Yamaha CD-S303 and there’s a similar looking Yamaha receiver. Just gets quite pricey. I also don’t know a lot about this world.

    • +3

      Have you checked the 90s?

      • -2

Have you ever thought about doing stand-up?

  • Should be a very nice receiver. Would have picked this over the NR7100 (although it's pretty nice too)

  • +2

Damn, I was thinking of selling mine (moving house and no need for a surround system any more), but it's now available new for half price!
I can recommend it though - it was on my shortlist as it integrated nicely with Google home, Spotify connect etc.. and it's been performing really well for the 2 years I've had it.
Dirac for room correction works really well too!

  • +1

This is Pioneer's equivalent to Onkyo NR7100 (same company, different brands).

Main difference being that the speaker crossover (where it passes off low frequency to the subwoofer) is set independently on the Onkyo (can set Front, Centre, Rears at different frequencies) vs local on the Pioneer (all speakers are level matched).

This may or may not be a big deal to you. At this price point, I'd think a lot of people might not really care.

    • I would spend a little more or wait for a decent price/discount on a unit that has pre-outs. IMO this unit will struggle when turned up. At least a 505 will be suffice in a decent sized room.

  • I just picked up an Onkyo 7100, it was between this model or the Onkyo for +$100: online comparisons mentioned that you couldn't modify the crossover frequency on each channel and had to set a global crossover frequency on the pioneer: the Onkyo could do it per channel. For the small price difference I thought it was worth it but for $300 I dont really know.

Edit: I am a mega noob just entering HT for the first time so I don't really know what I'm doing - both options have dirac which I read is good so we'll see.

Would love a Yamaha equivalent at this discount

  • Hmm tempted. Or should I order the VSX-LX805 for US$1500 from bestbuy + pay around $350 to a reshipper? Just heard some are not trustworthy which makes me hesitate.

    • +1

Wouldn't that be 110v? You'd need a transformer. We really get done here in Aus re: prices..

    • I'm sure there are Onkyo, Integra equivalents here for a decent price? Plus you need to spend $$ for a step down transformer. It'll be harder to resell if you upgrade.
IMO, this model will lack power for a larger room and hasn't even got pre-outs. Definitely the 505 will be at least minimal unit I'll get.

    • +1

Great points raised here! While importing the VSX-LX805 might seem tempting at first glance, there are a few things to consider:

Voltage Compatibility: Yes, US models are typically 110V, so you'd need a reliable step-down transformer, which adds to the cost and complexity of setup.
Warranty & Support: Purchasing locally ensures you get full warranty coverage and easy access to service if needed - something you won’t have with an imported unit.
Resale Value: As mentioned, a 110V model might be harder to resell here in Australia if you ever decide to upgrade.

If you're considering a more powerful model with pre-outs, the Pioneer VSX-LX505 or Onkyo RZ50 are fantastic options available locally. They offer added flexibility and power while avoiding the risks of importing. Let us know if you'd like help finding the right solution.

  • AVR and speaker packs. Does anyone still remember $300 Sherwood receivers from JB hifi and $150 5.1 speaker packs from eBay ("dream acoustics”).

    • +1

Those were the days when I got started into HiFi. I posted a deal for $199 JBL 5.1 speakers at Costco in 2014. My AVR was $180 on clearance from Allens in 2003. A Panasonic SA-HE90 RRP $1000, Panasonic's top of the line Class D amplifier, 100 Watts per channel.

Those prices are long gone. There was way more competition and warehouses weren't replaced by Just In Time ordering and Business-2-Business. Surround systems were sold everywhere at Dick Smith, Myers, David Jones, WOW Sight & Sound, even Clints Crazy Bargains/The Warehouse.

      • Good times

  • Just wondering if this is a big step up from my Yamaha RX-V6A which I got from a deal here last year or so.

    • +1

Well it has extra channels of you want 4 Atmos speakers in your ceiling

  • There are reports of HDMI hand shaking issues with this AVR. Are owners having problems with loss of sync and black screens requiring switching or power cycling?

    • No issues for me in 2 years of use.

  • Hey Op, any deals on the vsx-lx505?

    • +1

Hey! The VSX-LX505 is a fantastic receiver. I’m currently working on something special for this model - stay tuned! In the meantime, feel free to let me know if you have any other specific requirements, and I’ll see what I can do to help.

    • We can provide a single use coupon code to match the LX305 offer, if you wish to go ahead with the VSX-LX505. Please use: ASCOB1205 for the $200 off to be applied to your cart.

      • Thanks, very generous, shipping kills it to melbourne, either i wait for excel to get stock which they say will be in a few weeks ( $1579.00) with free shipping (refurbished), or go with you with free shipping?

  • I've had this receiver for about 8 months. Dirac is fantastic. Some handshake blank screens for 3 seconds or so when tv/receiver changes inputs but think this is more the LG tv and not the receiver. I have high quality hdmi certified cables as well.

For the price, this is a steal and I run a 5.4.2 set up and has more than enough power (running with klipsch reference speakers)

  • yeah I have the full surround sound equipment back when jb hifi cut cables to length in store. Back when they had quality home theatre stuff made to order and they used to install. alot of the equipment is Pioneer so that stuff lasts, not sure if the newer models last as long. But they are good.

  • Would this be adequate to drive Focal Chora 826?

    • Yes, the Pioneer VSX-LX305 can absolutely drive the Focal Chora 826 speakers with no issues! The Chora 826 needs 40-250W per channel, and the LX305 delivers 100W per channel at 8 ohms (20Hz-20kHz, 0.08% THD, 2 channels driven), which is more than enough for most setups.

If you're running fewer channels, the LX305 can push even more power to each, so you'll have plenty of headroom. For the best experience though, adding a dedicated power amplifier could really bring out the full potential of the Chora 826.

Here to help with anything else you need!

  • I thought no-one buys these since the 90s

  • This is a great deal. I paid $1,750 for the Integra equivalent of this exact model earlier this year. Though to be fair, the Integra version does have pre-outs and can set the crossovers independantly.

  • +1

Hey OP, can you confirm the watts per channel for this receiver please?

    • Great question! The Pioneer VSX-LX305 delivers 100 watts per channel at 8 ohms (20Hz-20kHz, 0.08% THD, 2 channels driven). It's designed to provide clear, powerful sound, making it a solid choice for most home theatre setups. Let us know if you have any other questions!

  • I see online that there are 2 versions of this receiver. The VSX-LX305 & VSX-LX305 Elite. Are they actually the same or is it just a different name for overseas markets?

    • Yes same, They use the Elite phrase in usa.
