@Cheapskate Paul: To me this reads as “log book servicing” and most mechanics do this now.

                • +1

@WhyAmICommenting: I have never recieved a copy of the workshop job card. There seem to be a lot of outs for MG here.

                  • @Cheapskate Paul: Good point. Food for thought.

I’ll prob do the first one at mg. It’s the $900 one that sucks.

                    • @WhyAmICommenting: What do they change which is worth $900?

                      • @serpserpserp: Mind boggles…. have they made it with a sealed battery cooling system that requires 8 hours labour to pull the thing out of the car and check? (ok… make that 3 hours @ $300 an hour) ahem

                      • @serpserpserp: On the four year service they change the gear reduction fluid but it’s only about 1L and they change some other fluids - brake etc. They probably factor in time for software upgrades too lol.

    • +1

Car of the year awards are a little .. biased

    • Your BIL's 51 does not have 15 year capped price servicing. It also does not have 10 year warranty.

Regardless, it's still a very good cheap EV

Im due for a new car and this is tempting.

Rego, tyres, and some repairs are due in April on my car but better off i sell as is and put it towards this car.

    Hmm decisions

    • +3

A car you already own is cheaper than one you don't

      *Probably

Unless it is a European car with special mention of VW. You don’t want to run those into the ground.

        • +1

Or a Land Rover.. Great cars although money pits
We owned two last one was due for the timing chain, water pump at 7 years around $5-$7k so traded it in for a EV :)
Do not miss $750 brakes every 2 years as they are too soft and also avg $800 service every freaking year.
Great cars still love another :) he he if I had the $$.
Even our Subaru had the timing chain done over $1k and services are $250 for small one
Add fuel Impreza thirsty uses around 13l/100 around town.. Not mind replacing that as well.

All the we charge free off solar.. not exactly free you loose the 3.3 cents a kw to sell.
Also depends if solar paid off yet, ours is 400km driving costs me $2 for the EV

          • @davemc: What’s great about a Land Rover then?

          • @davemc: That's a lot of timing chain work….. unless you meant to write timing belt.

            • @rooster7777: Belts sorry.
Land Rover are body off or someone with a mirror and long arms..
Subaru was I think $1200 for that service compared to I think $7k from a real dealer.

What's great about the Land Rover.. Apart from I like the looks they are great cars to drive.
We where towing at the time Air Suspension great for that.

          • @davemc: Wait til you see what a new battery costs…

            • @hippyhippy: If you look at long term savings with the 10 year warranty.

Average savings of $2500 to $3500 petrol per year if you have solar. Saving of $350 x 2 ($700) servicing per year. That pretty much covers the cost of the car. If you have an abn, thats another $3500 in your pocket savings. If you use your car for work, thats approx $4000 tax deduction (5000km at approx 80c per km, no proof required) which translates to $1330 tax savings per year. If you use your car for a few hours ride share (nil running costs), thats another few hundred per day.

If as per above, you are profiting from the car

              • @easternculture: Yeah i understand that… It's a decent deal for those who suits the lifestyle… But still… If you're saving 50 bucks a week in petrol… How are u charging it at home on solar?

  • +2

If only they included the Essence in the discounts.

The ZS EV Essence is on special too: $36,990. ZS EV Long Range $42,990.

Unless you want a hatch, they would be my pick. Much has been written about the fact that they are based on a common platform with ICE vehicles vs dedicated EV platform (MG4). I don't really see the downside. The upside: body parts will be a lot easier to come by when there are heaps of compatible ICE vehicles around.

Main item missing for the MG4 Excite: the rear radar, which allows rear cross traffic detection and blind spot monitoring. Also small things like automatic folding mirrors. Seats: cheap fabric vs cheap fake leather, a matter of taste I guess.

For the ZS EV the Essence also adds the sunroof. Absolutely love it in my car.

For the ZS EV: the long range has a lot more battery, making up for the fact that it is NMC. For the MG4: not much point. The battery buffer is bigger for NMC (meaning less % actually available), and it will likely degrade quicker, in a few years the actually achievable range will be quite similar between 51 and 64.

When V2H/V2G comes I would not hesitate using a LFP battery, but would think twice about using NMC.

    • How much is the ZS EV LR discounted by?

      • +2

Will depend on state, the special is nationwide, regular price is different. In WA the ZS EV LR is $51,626 regular price.

    • Also essence has 360 camera… I'm not getting a new car without it, but I'm also not going to pay an extra $13k for it.

    • +13

For me 450km would last me 3 weeks so everyone has different circumstances

    • How often do you do that?

      • -3

        every week

        • +13

Then it's not the car for you.

I drive about 500km a week, but in smaller drives, so my 51 suits me fine and I granny charge it overnight for very little $$

          • @oscargamer: My thoughts exactly.
It's almost like they act like it's getting forced down their throat.

        • +7

You would be in the minority driving that much, so I'd stick with ICE in that rare instance.

But 450km would suffice for most suburban folk easily, topping up when need be throughout the week.

    • +9

Range is a joke because is doesn’t suit your specific (unusual) circumstance?

I recall the average figure for daily distance being something like 40km. So 450km would suit most people just fine even if they only plug into a standard wall outlet overnight to top it up.

    • +1

You definitely shouldn’t buy one then. Got me, they sound perfect

    • +6

      Do you do that often?
If yes, then Ev is not for you. That's fine.

This is like calling flip flops a joke and hating on people who wear them because runners are better for exercise.

Buy the product that suits your needs and let others buy something that suits theirs. There's no need to be disingenuous about people's choices.

      • -5

  • Any MG4 Excite 51 owner can share their opinions, both pro and cons.

    • +5

Love it - quick, looks good, agile, a touch floaty

Super slow charger it comes with is only 1.4kwh

I don’t do many ks but still getting a 15A socket and another portable charger to double that speed. I don’t need a wall charger as 7kw will exceed my solar.

Hard to be patient with petrol cars sometimes.

Oh, some of the plastic is looking crappy already after about 2 weeks. Will be talking to MG dealer asap.

That’s the end of my Ted talk

      • +3

Why not live with it first, before spending on a 15A socket? and new cable.

I've done nearly 4000km and only use the granny charger. Only had to charge commercially twice, which was fine, as I took a break and stretched my legs

        • Well… I’m trying and it’s annoying haha. Plus it’s hard to “use” enough solar at 1.4kw/h

The total I’m looking at is about 6 or $700 which is less than the price of most 7kw wall chargers.

      • +2

Pretty sure you can get a wall charger that will basically charge at whatever capacity you set it to.

So if you have a 5kwh inverter, your house might use 2kwh, so you set the wall charger to 3kwh for charging in the middle of the day

        • True, but looking over 1k for that installed.

          • @WhyAmICommenting: You saved heaps on the MG so can pay for the wall charger now ;)

            • @slankets: Until you crash the EV and it gets written off for just minor damages, leaving you with very little due to how much EV depreciates. Also high cost of insurance eats into profits too…

      • +3

Speakers are absolute trash in the 51. no idea about the other.

        but simple enough to fix.

  • EV ignoramus here. Wouldn't it be a fundemental feature for the Vehicle to have the appropriate charging technology to suit installed the battery technology?

    • +2

Ideally yes. But you can plug this into a normal power point if needed.

    • +8

You are going to have to explain your question in clearer language…..please

      • Vinny said…. Wouldn't it be a fundemental feature for the Vehicle to have the appropriate charging technology to suit installed battery technology.

As in, Wouldn't it be a fundemental feature for the Vehicle to have the appropriate charging technology to suit installed battery technology.

Which means…. Wouldn't it be a fundemental feature for the Vehicle to have the appropriate charging technology to suit installed battery technology

Which make perfectly good sense. The charging tech should be designed for the specific battery tech.

  • What chance are we giving the xpower dropping 10k in the near future?

    • +1

      They already did this

    • +1

It’s $8k off. I reckon it will have a big drop in the future.

      • +1

agreed. they just add one more motor/controller to this 64kw variant. Whats an extra motor cost? So a $40K xpower is reasonable ask :)

  • +5

This or 2024 Ora extended range for 27K (in WA only), any thoughts guys?

    • +4

Will you have passengers in the back often? If so, go with MG4.

Otherwise test drive them both. I preferred driving the Ora and 27K for an extended range is such a bargain.

    • +2

Depends what you want it for.
If a bigger boot or driving it fast is what you want the MG is the better choice.
The Ora is more stylish and is a more premium car than the base model MG…..so a better buy at 27k.

      • +1

Aren't these both cars do 0-100 km/h around 7-8 seconds mark? Also Ora standard car inclusions are similar to MG4 essence (PU leather seats for an example). But I do like the extra space and usability of MG4. Can anyone comment on actual driving assistance systems of both cars please. Unlike many out there who absolutely hate those, I actually like them and rely on them quite a bit. I use them in my corolla cross (which has an extremely reliable system - it's so reliable now I'm no longer worried about micro naps during long highway driving.. lol). Do you think these MG4 and Ora can be as dependable as Toyota safety sanse? (Toyota older safety sense is not great by the way, I'm talking about the latest version - I think only in Corolla Cross has that - will be available for other cars from 2025). If someone could give me some comparison, especially lane assist and Radar Cruise stop & go system reliability of these cars. Thanks in advance.

        • +2

I didn't test all the safety feature when I test drove these cars, but of note the Excite version of the MG4 is missing some safety features. You have to pay extra for the Essence to get "blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, emergency lane keep assist, lane change assist, door opening warning and 360-degree parking camera display. "

I did test drive the Essence and found the blind spot monitoring to be pretty bad. Don't know if there was a problem with the car I tested, but I was getting alerts when there was nothing in my blind spot.

          • +2

@Aureus: I'll be rest driving an ora this Saturday and will report back here.

          • +2

@Aureus: Just did the test drive of Ora. Overall, it was a positive experience, nice pick up, quiet drive (obviously), nicer and surprisingly roomy interior (I drive corolla cross which is a compact SUV and I thought Ora had more internal room compared to even that.)
Negatives: despite a lot of drive assist stuff (which many complain as too much), Ora does NOT have lane centring. This is a massive deal breaker for me, unfortunately. I honestly thought whatever drive assisting stuff are really not as intrusive as some reviews say. I didn't get any beep during my few km of drive for example (after turning on everything as I personally like them in my Toyota).

    • +3

The ones you see for $27k are dealer demo. Means the dealer gets (or got) the $3.5k rebate from the state government. So for comparison you'll either need to take the $3.5k off the MG prices are add them back on to the Ora (making it a $30.5k car).

Still a great deal if you like the look and ride. Do a test drive and see.

      • Yes these are 'demo' cars as they're registered (dealer has done that to get government rebate which is now passed onto the customer via lower price). However, the cars themselves have '0' km on the odometer (i.e. never been driven) so technically brand new. Just did the test drive of Ora.
I didn't get any beep during my few km of drive for example (after turning on everything as I personally like them 'kept on' at all times in my Toyota).

        • Unfortunately with the MG4 the lane assist is pretty much a letdown too. With the MY21 ZS EV, after a software update, it was really good.

With the MY22 ZS EV LKA still is crap, but the same function that comes as part of the MG Pilot is great. Downside: only works when cruise control is on.

That said: the only time I was inside a Tesla M3 I was astonished how bad it was in that respect (just their 'autopilot', not FSD).

Not sure how they can be so hit and miss.

          • @team teri: I saw a review showing lane centring in Ora so I'm not sure whether I missed this somewhere but I did check all the menu options.. The car certainly recognised even some really difficult lanes/ dotted lanes etc I could see them clearly shown on the screen so it's odd if it can't control the steering wheel, perhaps a software update could fix this?

Yeah, about Tesla auto pilot I've heard the same. Apparently, Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 (latest version which was released in 2022 for limited models only) is way better than that.

  • -1

    Prices are dropping.

    • more to come. I read BYD want to go lower again in 2025 so stay tuned !

  • Is this a SUV?

    • Hatchback

      • Thanks. It looks big for Hatchback

I’ll wait for MG ZS Essence to reduce further in price. I suspect that will happen first quarter next year in anticipation for the newer model to be released

        • +2

yeah, the rego papers has it listed as a sedan but mg insists it's a hatchback
though on that note the MG ES5 suv is coming out next year and its based on the mg4 platform so that might be something you might be interested in

          • @sonovolantis: how much will the MG ES5 cost?

          • @sonovolantis: I read the MG ES5 will be released second quarter and I suspect the launch price will be at least $40k for the entry level range.

I’m hoping to get the MG ZS Essence for low $30k 🙏… or I be dreaming. I suppose it will depend on stock levels on the essence , which I have no clue.

        • It’s definitely got more ground clearance and height than a Kia Rio. But it’s barely bigger than a Byd dolphin

  • +2

Waits for MG Xpower to reduce to $44990.00 Drive away 😁

  • -6

    sorry what's wrong with Chinese?
    That's a very racist statement.

    • +2

It isn't racist. Chinese cars in the past have been pretty garbage. Lots of people still don't trust them for that reason, so a solid warranty helps.

      • +8

They said the same thing about Japanese cars, then Korean cars and now Chinese cars.

I think the Chinese will/have improve faster than both of them.

        • +2

Maybe. They have already improved a lot. I have a BYD Seal and I think it is a great car, but there are still a few little issues with it.

          • -2

@Aureus: Forgot to add it’s almost same price as Tesla but the software in BYD is so CRAP!

          • @Aureus: What issues are u having ,very interested in BYDs

            • @Francis82: Small rattle sound under dash. Have taken it in and was advised they think it is the HUD and they are waiting on BYD to advise what to do. I also drove the courtesy car while my car was getting fixed and that one had the same issue.

Front brakes were loud new. Service center did some work and they seem okay now.

When washing the car, water will get past the flap for the charge port. There is the rubber covers protecting the actual charge port, but it is not ideal. You can buy a rubber seal to fix this.

Software doesn't handle roundabouts well. Have had the emergency brakes go on while rolling towards roundabout. Have had unsafe acceleration due to adaptive cruise control stop tracking the car in front on the roundabout.

              • @Aureus: To be fair, you probably shouldn't be running cruise control through a roundabout.

                • @dontpanic: To be fair, probably not, but it is nice in traffic to just chuck it in cc and not touch any pedals.

        • I think the Chinese will/have improve faster than both of them

Great wall motors sent their first cars to Australia 15 years ago.
