  • Looks like a lot of different models are on sale including womens, mid (goes up to your ankles) and wide sizes. If you have a wide foot then I'd definitely get the wide model as they run on the narrower side https://www.kathmandu.com.au/shop?q=salomon+x+ultra+4

How do these compare with the XA pro 3D?

They're trail running shoes while the X Ultra 4s are hiking shoes. Hope that helps.

I think the xa pro 3D series is rubbish and will be going nordarun v1 next. Non goretex as that’s an inherent flaw along with slippery soles and lack of cushion. The contagrip sole has nothing on vibram. I think most manufacturers are making pretty poor items these days as even $500 nordaruns had the lace tips falling off out the box at the store. Everyone is reinventing the wheel with synthetics and a merrel moab 3 is still far better value quality than most others.

  • How did you find the Ultra 4 compared to the Ultra 3? Loved my Ultra 3 but seeing mixed reviews on the 4.

    • Enjoy my 4s. Find them to be lighter and more flexible than the 3s though wish they had a bit more padding in the midsole. Yeah not sure why there is a lot of hate for them online but for some reason people didn't like the transition from the 3s to the 4s.

  • Thank you OP for sharing this, the Ultra GTX are good shoes, loved my Ultra 2 GTX

unfortunatley Salomon still haven't fixed where their quicklace nylon is slicing open the shoe tongue, especially the bottom horizontal row.
The friction first wear down the gore-tex, then slice it open

despite all that, I still wore my Ultra 2 GTX till there were no more contragrip outsole left
good shoes if they fit you, with some caveat

  • I personally found the Ultra 3 not that comfortable. It was a little too stiff for my liking…

  • Always wanted to try these (been wearing XA pro 3d and speedcross for years) but they don't make them in a wide fit
