Plenty of stock at Carnes Hill Woolies at lunchtime today. Also plenty at Prestons yesterday. Thank you, 10000 QFF points. I wonder if someone from Woolies has read this thread and are concerned about a possible complaint to the ACCC so they ensured they have plenty of stock this time ‘round, given that they’re not in favour with the ACCC at the moment. 🤣😂

  • Can I use 2 x $250 Coles mastercard gift card plus pay balance from my bank account to buy 1x $500 Vanilla Visa card? Is it possible? Thank you

    • +2

      Ask gzy2001.

Find the user, find the answer.

      • Thanks for the precise information, mate. Appreciated!

  • I have a little doubt on this promotion at the moment. Wonder if I am falling into some sort of "trap".
$17.05 over $500 is only 3.4% profit. We often see shopback or prezzee or wws gift card itself running 3% to 10% off promotions.
Also the 3.4% profit is in rewards points and I have to spend them on WWS groceries. I guess this is the real potential initiative from Woolworths running this from time to time.
Comparing to x% off promotion, we can spend less and those are "free" money.

The only advantage I can think of is for credit sign up where we can quickly meet the criteria.

    • 3.4% profit for a visa card to pay bills, ATO, etc.

      • now I can think of this as a better and simpler case:
I used $9.94 (when comparing to ATO payment) to get rewards dollar $25. It is like wws gift card is running a 60% off promotion. sounds crazy.

  • Try to pay council on council website, but always shows in error: exceed withdrawl frequency limit.
Does any one have the same issue as I have?

    • Yeah I was getting that the other day when I tried council, electricity provider and a few other sites. If your council allows online post bill pay through Australia post that could be an option as it worked for me.

      • Thanks @SIo20

I tried Australian Post, had the same issue, saying exceed the daily limit. Post office guy also has no answer for it.

        • +2

Damn. I also had exceeded daily limit when trying to pay my gas bill. I tried paying a smaller amount but that didn’t resolve.

It was actually my Origin bill I paid via aust post that worked, whereas it had the frequency limit when trying directly with Origin website.

Failing those, shopback gift cards or discounted Woolies gift cards via RACQ worked for me. ATO tax bill is another option that always works for me.

    • My local council only accepts one time payment online.
I did the rest by visiting the council

      • What is one time payment?

        • +2

I could only pay via my local councils website once per year.
Submitting payments after that errors out (not all councils have the same issue as I can pay my parents rates who live in a different area). I had multiple GCs to use so had to visit the council reception which was all good but just wasted the receptionists time (I had multiples of $250/$100 GCs)

          • @mmd: Probably it depends on councils

        • I pay rates at 3 Councils in Vic and can use multiple cards. Sometimes they do not allow payment if it's the same amount as the previous payment but all good the next day.

  • +1

I will use these cards next week to buy the coles promo gift cards

  • I managed to get the Birthday Gift Card and it didn't work on my ATO. The website didn't want to accept the card.

    • Time to run through the standard troubleshooting questions:

      • Did you enter the card number, expiry date and CVV2 correctly?

      • Was the payment + associated payment fee less than or equal to the available balance? The ATO currently charges a 0.4% payment fee for prepaid Visa gift cards, which means that if you were attempting to redeem $500 from your gift card, the maximum payment you can send is $498.01 (+ $1.99 payment fee).

      • Did you wait at least 30 minutes after purchasing the gift card before attempting to make the ATO payment?

        • Yes
        • Yes
        • No

Maybe I'll try again when I get another card. Got to hunt for it. Thank you.

        • Let us know how it goes. I think on the pack it mentions it may take up to 24 hours after activation.

          • +4

@eecchhoo: It does say that, but the collective OzBargain experience is that you only need to wait around 30 minutes from the time of purchase for the full balance to be available for redemption.

I purchased a Vanilla Visa Birthday gift card last night and was able to use the full $500 balance on a purchase two hours later.

Just went into woolies. no cards at stand and manager said yeah they keep in cupboard due to the fraud that's been happening.
She had a bunch of some prepaid visa's (not the gift/happy bday ones - can't remember which one) that had been tampered with. She showed me how they place a sticker with another barcode over the legit barcode however the printing is crap as - crooked like an inkjet printer that needed to have that alignment done big time.

So one thing to check when you are buying any of these cards, is if the barcode that's supposed to be printed on the card can be peeled off.

She said they found out who it was and caught him and reported to police - supposedly working for some company that maybe is somehow related to ( not sure what she really meant - maybe sounded like related in the sense like they are the delivery company or something).

  • Guys, if you’re in south west Sydney, there are at least 20 of the variable vanilla visa and 10 of the variable birthday ones at Woolies Carnes Hill. I’ve already grabbed four in this round, so thought I’d let you know of the substantial quantities left at this store.

  • Can Vanilla (InComm) claw back charges made on scammed prepaid cards? Any risks to merchants accepting payments?

The card was rejected at a restaurant by the cashier, she was on about they cannot risk accepting gift cards because of all the scams going on.

Don't know if her concern is legitimate, or just her personal opinion that gift cards are bad and should be avoided in general.

She then offered 5% discount by paying cash, so we paid cash and moved on.

    • +1

Considering there is no registered, verified cardholder for any prepaid gift cards, it means that the restaurant has no idea whether your gift card was legitimately purchased by you, or whether you were using someone else’s gift card, or whether you purchased the gift card using a stolen credit card, etc. Fraudulent transactions can be disputed on (most) prepaid gift cards (including Vanilla Visa gift cards), so the staff member serving you is not wrong. Maybe they were a little paranoid though? Who knows, maybe the restaurant recently had to deal with a chargeback due to a stolen prepaid gift card or something, so the restaurant is taking a more hardline stance on payment methods?

I actually had one situation where I used a prepaid eftpos gift card at one restaurant, but when I visited again a couple of months later, the CommBank EFTPOS terminal automatically rejected the prepaid eftpos gift card as soon as I swiped it. The staff member told me they worked with CommBank to block them, because management wanted to reduce the likelihood of dealing with chargebacks and fraudulent transactions.

  • Is there any left in Sydney? I keep looking but can’t find any since the first morning

Has anybody encountered issues with HSBC split payments being declined when paying for these cards?

The other day I did 1st and 2nd taps via phone and then 3rd tap was declined. Using physical card (same account), I then did 3rd and 4th taps but then 5th tap was declined.

    • Scam protection

    • +1

I once did 9x$99 taps and the tenth one failed for fraud purposes

      • Yeah interesting that it only failed on 10th tap not before like mine.
Must be random how many taps before it declines

        • Kind of usually if the same amount for X times in short amount of times it'll block

          • @Poor Ass: I’ve never done the same amount, it’s always been different amounts…

      • Do you normally pay for these deals with your HSBC card this way? I always presumed it would fail after a few taps or get too much unwanted attention from staff.

        • Hahaha almost never I was really just testing out how many times I can tap under $100 before they block the card

        • I've never had trouble before this time so I guess they must be improving security on this

Finally a sale that is actually obtainable, and used both Amex and CBA Special cashbacks.

Purchased 15 cards over 7 days, bought an extra just to test if a third card of different variant also qualifies for 10x points, and it did. Obviously no guarantee this will be the case in future events, they can easily stop it if they wanted.

Since Thank You card also qualifies, this time around maximum potential is 210,000 Everyday Rewards points, or 105,000 QFF points. But $21k is a bit of outlay. Not sure is anyone tried 2+2+2 on the same day.

    • And that's only if you have one account lol

      • I have multiple rewards accounts, but don't have immediate use of that much GC value and don't want to sit on them for too long.

It's a great deal if can be spent quickly, surprised people commenting the "% discount" is not worth the trouble, or may be they say so to deter others from buying. :D

        • Ye exactly… I struggle to spend more than $2K per deal… Lucky they come around fairly often

    • 2+2+2

      2 white packaging
      2 birthday packaging
      What's the other 2

      • +2

        Thank You.

It was never pictured nor explicitly mentioned in the Woolworths catalogue as being included in this deal, but I received 5000 bonus points when I purchased a $500 one during this deal.

        • Haha nice

          Hidden card unlocked

I bet once you open it just looks like the other 2

          • +1

@Poor Ass: Actually, there are subtle differences.

            • There is no Vanilla branding on the front.
            • The sticker on the back of the gift card has a message saying “Do not remove” for some weird reason.
    • Thanks for the tip that the Thank You card is also included, was all that was left on the shelf when I went tonight.

  • Anyone know if these work for Deft payments.

    • +1

No, the Visa variant doesn't, Mastercard yes.

If you go through assisted checkout, the bonus points shows on screen before payment, a good way to confirm before paying. Not sure if this is the case at self checkout, I have stopped using self checkout for gift cards due to repeated prompts.

But once it did not show bonus point on screen, I didn't think much of it, until I refresh the app also no points there. Then I started paying attention to the screen.

  • Anyone encountered issues using this card at Costco? I have used it successfully on purchases and membership renews, including making split payments last weeks. But no longer, they are saying if I don't know the PIN, then the signature must match, as well as the member's name. Since this card has no PIN, no signature, and no name, they cannot accept it.

I'm sure the payment system would accept it, but they have put in human process to stop it, could also depends on how anal the checkout person is.

Strangely though, I remember one time the transaction went through straightaway, without asking for PIN or signature. The cards look the same, don't know what triggered the different approval path.

    • It depends on the business machine setup.
I used it at a newsagency expecting to sign but it was automatically approved.
I tried to use it at a servo and it asks for the PIN and there was no option to override (there was no problems in a different servo)

      • In earlier successful checkout, I did a split payment using 2 cards, both 4748 3818 Vanilla Visa cards expiring in the same month/year.

The first card asked for a PIN, I pressed "enter" for signature, the checkout person ignored it anyway.

The second card went through straightaway, I don't know if the checkout person pressed something to bypass.

Anyhow, he was fully aware I was paying with prepaid cards and said nothing about it. Few days later at a different Costco, I did a split payment using 2 Vanilla Visa cards to renew membership at the courtesy desk, both transactions required signature, they accepted it no dramas. I then went in for a quick shop, 20 minutes later, different checkout person refused to accept the prepaid card without a PIN, and called the supervisor who sided with the checkout person.

It's possible it is a long standing policy that is loosely enforced or discretionary.
