  • Is it applicable to the Tech head card? I see TGG, JB and Officeworks on that

    • yes, I think so.

  • This website just does not want me to buy cards from them. Had major issues from a previous deal where Amex could not see any issues at their end, and Special support refused to unblock me.

    • create a new account mate. I had the same issue with my previous account, no card working. I just created a new account, all cards working.

      • I created a new account with a different phone number and it still didn't like me.

    • Not just Amex, payment issue with CBA Mastercard as well. But not persistent, I have had both Amex and CBA cards rejected at times and days later accept again.

Guess it has got something to do with fraud detection implemented in the payment gateway (Stripe?). I assume the gateway uses third party algorithms that evaluate a range of conditions, they would be quite dynamic and decisions change frequently. Being a platform selling gift cards, the rules are probably very stringent.

There's no problem with the cards themselves, so the issuers don't see anything wrong at their end.

      • Since I got this offer I tried again just now and re-created my account (I deleted it after last time). Still rejected :(

  • +11

Good deal, seem to get this on alternating Amex primary cards each time it is offered.

You can use the Woolworths special gift card to purchase further gift cards in store allowing this to stack with other promotions.
Combine with current Apple GC 20x everyday rewards promotion to effectively get 20% off.

    • Does it work? Planning to purchase eBay GC so can I buy Woolies special gift card and check out at Woolies on eBay GC?

      • Yes - however not sure if Woolworths has discounted eBay GC before. So if purchasing at face value would amount to 10% off.

      • +13

The Special Woolies is effectively like a prepaid card that can only be used at WW. Load into google or apple wallet and at the self checkout select to pay with Card, not Gift Card.

Therefore it can be used to purchase other gift cards.

    • Keen to see any pilot verifying it this time.
It sounds like the special woolworths card is different from a normal woolworths gift card.

      • +4

It is different - works as a prepaid debit card rather than a typical Woolworths gift card. The Special Woolworths gift card can't be added to the everyday rewards app either.

        • Thanks mate

    • I may have miscalculated this but here's my attempt.

I purchased a Woolworths special gift card using AmEx with a value of $200. Once the cash back comes through that will be $180 total.
Used the gift card plus extra cash to purchase 5x$50 Apple GC. Received the bonus points which are $25 worth.
Purchased Apple TV 4K Wi‑Fi + Ethernet with 128GB storage for $249. $40 Apple GC bonus at the moment (still not sure if paying with Apple balance effects this but it seemed to go through and shows as to be sent).

So, assuming it works (I'll know once I pick it up later and definitely know once the $20 AmEx is credited) that would be $249 - $20 AmEx cashback - $25 Woolworths rewards points - $40 Apple GC making it @$164 (ignoring the fact that $85 is tied up as gift cards/bonus points).

Feel free to correct me and also I'll confirm if the Apple GC goes and it sent, once I pick the Apple TV up later on. Even if it does work, a lot of risk and a lot of stuffing around!

Any special gift card that I can use at food delivery apps, please ? - menulog, Uber eats and DoorDash ?

    • +2

Deliveroo is on the retailers list for the Fine Foodie card. So it might work with other food delivery apps.

      EDIT:

      • "The Fine Foodie Card can be used at every restaurant, whether it’s 5-stars or drive-thru Australia-wide."
      • From the MCC list, DoorDash, Uber Eats are under 5812 (Eating Places, Restaurants) but Menulog varies.
      • Report of card working for Uber Eats GC.
  • +3

The Special Category Cards might work at more places than those listed (possibly because merchant category codes are used). No guarantees and people get differing results but if you are getting one of those anyway, it's worth trying it out.

    • Thanks for mentioning that. If it can work on postbillpay that would be amazing.

  • +3

So if my maths is right the card value for max benefit will be for $200?

  • I activated via the Amex website so can I now just buy a Dan Murphys gift card from the special site and pay for it with my Amex and then I will later receive a 10% discount on my Amex?

    • +1

Yes - the 10% gets credited back within a couple days.

  • +1

It has been mentioned before, Woolworths GC from Special can be used to purchase Wish GC at Woolworths, a little more flexibility.

    • But why? Get a further discount by getting Wish GC?

      • No further discounts, they used to sell Super Shopper that can be used to buy discounted Woolworths GC, but stopped Super Shopper.

It's probably much of muchless, as $100 doesn't go very far in groceries. However, options don't hurt, Wish GC can be used at more places.

The Everyday Rewards Shop in the Everyday Rewards App, Woolworths, BIG W, BWS, Dan Murphy’s and participating ALH Venues and EG Ampol fuel sites.

      • But why?

Special doesn't necessarily have the best reputation at least not in OzB. The idea is to not let your money sit with them for too long.

    • Thanks for the tip. It's a bit of a pain to have to use the Special App to use the Special Card, so this is a handy sidestep.

I just tried buying a Woolworths GC through the woolworths mobile discounted card thing. But didn't seem to work (and website said this service was down). Will try again later.

      • +2

Special woolworths gift card does not work at woolworths discounted Gift card site but special tech head card works fine.

        • Sorry just checking what you mean here, are you saying I could buy the special tech head card then use it in the Woolies everyday gifting section of the app to buy a wish gift card with 3% off plus everyday rewards points?

          • +1

@Charlie4242: Yes. I did it successfully yesterday as well as in last deal. Managed to get $208.33 woolworths gift card using $200 special tech head card so altogerther cost me $180 for $208.33 woolworths egift card

            • @FiDad: I tried adding the Special's Tech Head gift card to my Woolworth's Reward app's Wallet via 'Add a Debit or Credit Card', but got an error.

I was able to add Special's Tech Head gift card as a payment method via giftcards.woolworths.com.au, which I went to through Everyday Insurance Portal as it gives me 4% off as I have Woolworths car insurance. I think this is the method that FiDad was referring to. Then I was able to purchase $208.33 Woolworths gift card using my Special's Tech Head $200 gift card.

              • @Alinnia: How long for the gc to arrived? I paid using this Tech card and the order went through ok , go confirmation email from WW but still no GC for last 15 minutes. Not sure it's because of weekend processing.

                • @timhn: Have you purchased from Woolworths Gift Cards website before or changed your billing details since last purchase? If either of those happens to be yes, there could a verification delay.

When I purchased mine yesterday I received the gift card 7 mins after the confirmation email. But in the past I have experienced a delays up to a couple of hours on the weekend.

                  • @Alinnia: yes, I bought from there before without problem when paid by CC. Normally received with few minutes.

Over 5hrs since purchased and still nothing. I'll wait till Monday and call them.

                    • @timhn: Finally, the GC email arrived this morning together with the tax invoice.

                • @timhn: How did you pay using tech card? I also encountered and error via Woolworth's Reward app's Wallet via 'Add a Debit or Credit Card' as above.

                  • +9

@tlai: The Everyday Rewards app will not let you add the Tech Head gift card as a new payment method, because the app only allows payment cards that support 3-D Secure. All prepaid gift cards - including the Tech Head gift card - cannot support 3-D Secure.

However, if you go to the Woolworths Group gift card portal, you should be able to use the Tech Head gift card as a payment method on there. If you have access to any of these partner portals, you should be able to purchase some Woolworths Group gift cards at a discount too.

@WookieMonster: Do we have OzBargain Awards we can give out? Because gdamn Wookie you deserve one.

                    • @WookieMonster: Yep I tried this and it worked via entertainment portal. However it's 'processing' similar to the other person here.

                    • +1

@WookieMonster: i used on the seniors website yesterday with the tech head gift card. received order confirmation but never received the gift card. this morning received email that my order was cancelled due to an error in processing. i tried again on woolworths own portal but order cancelled as well with the same reason.

                      • @yw: I ended up getting my card, but took probably half a day.

                      • @yw: Someone says this card doesn't work via senior portal, but the others (less discount).

                    • +1

@WookieMonster: Thanks for the tip, I was about to buy a straight up Woolies gift card on Special. Can confirm I was able to use the Tech Head gift card to buy a gift card on the Woolies website via the Student Edge portal.

                      • @orbz: This is the only time when I'd prefer to have a gift card from retailer rather than the Special "special" credit/debit card

                    • +1

@WookieMonster: Worked like a treat! Thank you.

Good for vanilla visa next week ✌🏼

    • +1

Where do you see the offer ?

      • +1

        Freepoints

        • Cool, I guess same deal with Vanilla Mastercard last week.

  • +5

this store is so notorious for payments failing, orders being cancelled, fraud warnings all manner of crap happening

but when you get the card it is a pretty good gift card thingy

    • +1

I gave up, couldn't get my payment to go through. I should have heeded the warnings

  • -8

Don't bother with these. When you purchase a card you're provided card details to process like a credit card. It doesn't work. I've tried over and over to pay for something at Officeworks then had to revert to a proper credit card since it won't process. Now I have to waste my time fighting to get my money back. And with no phone numbers might end up being days. Will probably just report it as a scam.

  • Thanks OP, got it on my platinum charge

  • Anyone has trouble login to special ? The login form is missing

  • +1

Excellent OP, always good to highlight AMEX offers that might slip past during the silly season.

  • Any promo codes that work on the site for additional discounts?

Buy the outdoor(Aussie Explorer) card at 10% back and then use at Ampol to buy the 5% off Ampol gift cards…. be quick Ampol offer ends in a few days

  • So spend 200$ on gift card and get 20$ back - am I correct ?

  • +1

Bought an $800 explorer card to use today and it doesn't work - can't add to Google wallet and can't check out at anaconda. I've contacted Special through their form but anticipate this is going to be annoying

    • Are you trying to pay as a gift card or credit card?

      • I tried both - as a gift card before realising that it is actually a mastercard. When trying it as a mastercard it just declined. In the end it worked after adding it to my wife's Apple Pay

    • Same here. I bought one $200 WW gc and it's not adding to my Apple wallet. Annoying…

  • -7

    Attention!Attention!Attention!
    Special is a scam!
DO NOT buy gift cards from Special! It is a huge scam!

I purchased 2 of $200 dollars David Jones gift cards, when I tried to spend in store, the card wont be able to add to my apple wallet.
When I tried to add to apple wallet, it says needs to be verified by Special , then i go the verification step, every time i go verify, it just jumped to the special app, but nothing happened. no activation , no verification, cant add to apple wallet! It wasted me so much time in the store.
And then I tried to spend online. but the gift card is definitely not the real David Jones gift card because it has only 16 digits ,which also comes with expiry date and CVV. However, the normal David Jones gift card should have 20 digits , always starts with 60126 and requires a 4 digit Pin. So I cant use the gift card on David Jones website as well.

I called AMEX to dispute the charge, but I have to submit some documents and it will take some time to investigate! its such a painful process!

Anyone who haven't bought gift cards from Special, avoid them!
Anyone who has purchased gift cards from Special, check if you can use them, if no, call Amex to dispute charge immediately!
There is no way to contact Special, such a doggy company! scammer!

I had the same it should be iphone issue from my exp per discussed https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15894998/redir

try to find another iPhone (don't login your apple ID) or Android phone then use the card# found in "spend online" to add manually.
or use the card# directly as credit card via online (not gift card).

      • Hi thx. but it is not the issue of my iphone. I used the ultimate gift cards before, and I can always add them to my apple wallet easily. But I will try to use as credit card and see how it goes.

    • +2

It won't be in the same format as a DJs gift card as it's effectively a prepaid MasterCard that works at DJs. When trying to use it you need to select credit rather than gift card, hope that helps

      • thx. Let me try first. But it will be so annoying to find sth exactly $200 to pay. :(

      • I managed to use $186 on David Jones website. I entered as credit card , and it paid as MasterCard. don't know how to use the balance of $14. its so troublesome. It cant combine two payment. and even use a normal DJ gift card, it will take all the money from the gift card first.

        • did u try to add card to wallet manually? if your phone is ok to add those Ultimate cards, then should be fine to do this way.
          it would trigger SMS verification.

    • I had a similar problem as mentioned above - card details would not work when checking out, and I could not add to Google Pay.

I got the app on my wife's iPhone and added the card and it worked. Then I checked out with it on mobile - it failed the first time and worked the second.

I don't think it is a scam - I just think the issuance of cards is a bit broken

    • +1

good news! I used the Special David Jones gift cards (more like a prepaid mastercard) to purchase David Jones e-gift card online , it worked. So save the trouble to add it to apple wallet!

  • +2

These gift cards really are 'special' because of how bad and unfriendly they are

They are just a restricted credit card that only works at the 'gift card' store.

So if shopping online people pick gift card as payment but then get confused because that doesn't work as it isn't a gift card.

Websites might be setup to allow you to split payment with gift cards but normally aren't setup to split payments with credit cards, so if shopping online you need to spend the exact balance.

The person you send the special card to needs to make an account and install an app just to be able to use the gift card.
If they want to pay in store they need to use Apple or Android wallets and they then have no idea what the balance of the card is as that's only available though special so they need to keep the special app installed until they have spent the card balance.

    • I agree they're not user friendly for first time users but disagree that they're bad. There's just a bit of a learning curve involved. Which is why I wouldn't send them as gifts, I would just use it myself.

I like that they're a like a restricted debit card, allows you to buy gift cards with Special gift cards! Which means you can stack discounts on top discounts.

      • but disagree that they're bad. There's just a bit of a learning curve involved.

So they provide a poor user experience, that's bad isn't it?

Which is why I wouldn't send them as gifts, I would just use it myself.

The whole point of them is to be used as gifts.
If you wouldn't use them for their primary purpose then they must be bad.

        • Your user experience was obviously different from my user experience. Hence why I personally don't think they're bad. To each their own.

Personally I've bought a lot more gift cards, not just Special gift cards, to use for myself/my household for discounted purchases compared to buying gifts cards to be used as gifts. To each their own.

    • +2

Is this a general comment that also applies to TCN, Ultimate and Swap gift cards? If you went for the multi-retailer cards instead or you're familiar with those to begin with, you're less likely to be confused. I've never used the app but I've only ever used the cards online and I check the balance on the website.

Surely, the 16-digit number, expiry date and CVV tell you you should use it like a credit card.

    • I fell into this trap before reading this. Had to go instore to sort out as couldn't split payment online as this was a credit card, not gift card.

  • +3

Got this on Qantas Ultimate but not on Plat Charge or Edge - always love these ones - i buy the Woolworths Special and then use that to buy a card on offer in Woolies (either 10% off or 20x points)

  • +1

My order was cancelled with no reason given and amex charged!

  • if I have 2 of these deals active, will both of them payout?

  • +1

Order got cancelled of a $200 woolies GC. Hoping for refund now. No idea what happened with "Special"

    • +1

      Special is definitely special.

    • -1

May be they have closed the loophole.

  • +1

Ordered a Woolworths one this morning, no issues, already used to purchase a Vanilla Visa card which is already consumed to pay bills.

Effectively $487.95 for $500 value and $25 worth of reward points.

  • Got Woolies card. And $20 Amex credit already landed. Went to buy an Apple Card in Woolies on Tuesday but they were all gone. Will wait for another promo

  • Purchased $200 woolies card this morning, added to wallet.

  • +2

FYI: for those who try and purchase on a mobile device. It didn't work for me. I think this is because AMEX tries to bring up a "use your card points" pop-up. I did it on a desktop computer and didn't have any issues clicking past the pop-up to get my card.

  • Anyone have issue add special gift card into Apple Pay? I am having verification required problem from special.

  • +3

Still working. Just got the Tech Head card and used it to purchase Everyday Wish card via My NRMA app. $206.18 after 3% discount.

    • Yup as of now too.

  • Interesting that the transaction description shows Specialcard-Woolworths. Didn't know WOW has a part in this.

  • Thanks OP. Combined it with 5% seniors discount and got $210.52 worth of WISH gift card for $180.

    • How do you apply the Seniors discount?
Update: I assume you used the Special mastercard to buy on the Seniors portal

      • Yes correct. Bought $200 worth of Tech Head card and used it in the Seniors portal.

        • Thanks! I just saw a comment above saying "Special woolworths gift card does not work at woolworths discounted Gift card site but special tech head card works fine"

  • Has anyone tried using the techhead card on Qantas marketplace? Seems like it works on other online shops like mynrma so wondering if I can use it to stack with purchasing a gift card
