Seagate Portable: my experience could be an outlier & note responses, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15929281/redir
Considerations for some,
1.Powered spinning hdd as main storage: 4 - 8Tb, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/879481
2.Temporary & portable storage: buy a M.2 NVMe CASE (eg AliExpress: ~ $10 discount for 1st time customers), & used branded ssd: EX-laptop & some risk.

I don’t understand why these are still limited to 5TB. they maxed out at 5TB a decade ago. Why hasn’t the capacity increased in all these years?
Good question. It probably has to do with Physics. Something about the size of the platters, anything bigger will need a larger form factor.
Also will need additional power to run the unit.
The first 6TB Portable drives came out this year!

20TB enterprise SSDs are also an option if you have deep pockets and a caddy.
if you have deep pockets and a caddy
Is the main reason for people to head down this path is NAS features & the need for lots of storage, eg 20Tb +
I need an EXTRA 8Tb of storage: 3rd copy backup of data (40Gb), next decade of movies downloads & just in case my existing hdd (2 &/or 4Tb) gets immanent disk failure via smart-software.
These are terrible, die at about 13 months for me, Western Digital give me more than 2yrs
I've had dozens of Seagate's and never had one die on me. Maybe I'm just lucky
Use them all the time,as much as 10hrs a day … have 2 that I keep synced so when one of them dies, I only lose the work not backed up to the second one, if you used them like I do, you'd find WD's last twice as long.
Glad I got mine at $137ea
