I've used Newsdemon as my sole provider since 2018 with an occasional free block promo here or there from other sources and have never had issues.

I'm still on a 2018 black friday plan which is $54.75 AUD per 14 months, so about $4 a month.

Deal 6 looks pretty great for this one.

    • Currently paying $64 p/m unlimited + VPN. Seems like I should cancel and get a better deal. Assume they won't prorata any remaining months though…

Newsdemon support are really good (well they were the few times i've contacted them years ago), if you sign up a new black friday account just message them and they should be able to combine whatever time you have left on current account to your new one.

      • 1TB block. Bummer.

    • $46usd/2 yrs unlimited for me for multiple years with zero issues.
Doesn't max a 1gb connection but for the price it's fine

    • I literally just found out about usenet before seeing this post, but wouldn’t deal 7 be the most cost effective as it works out to be 3$ a month? Or am i missing something here?

      • +1

The risk would be, are they around in 10 years to get your moneys worth?
$25 for 12 months seems the best deal if you wanted to go that way.

  • Got a 5TB block for $5. I mainly use private trackers so I guess this is a good excuse to start using Usenet too

  • I go 3 months unlimited for my $5. Decent, probably didnt need it with my other unlimited providers though. Would of rathered a block. But cant complain.

From reddit comments from the rep about a 5% chance for the 10 year.

    • I went and punched it into the old cumulative drop chance calculation before reading it's a one per customer deal there…

      Bad gacha/gamba habits…

      • I did it twice, it made two accounts for me but that's fine. Just sucks if you get multiple unlimiteds, but could be worth asking if they'll stack em

230 for the 10 year seems steep, should be more like 180 imo

They advertise it's random, but obviously it's not, most people will just get the 500Gb, 1tb or 3mth unlim.

      • Negged? Even though a rep said it's 5% chance?

        Good math buddy!

        • +1

Just because they stated the 5% chance of getting the 10 years, doesn't mean its not random.

          • @metallum: Maybe I'm missing something here, but any given % chance of something happening is not a random chance.

Where are all the 10 year winners?

            • +2

@Grish: I think you’re misunderstanding the meaning of random. Just because you know the percentage likelihood of something happening, doesn’t mean it is not random.

E.g a coin flip, you know is 50/50 heads/tails. Doesn’t mean the outcome is not random each time.

              • @metallum: Ok so let's say there are 6 prizes numbered 1-6.

Then we have a program that will randomly output a number from 1-6, and the result will be your prize.

This is randomly selecting a prize from 1-6 right?

Ok sure, maybe I read random as equal odds of landing 1-6. I would assume most players assumed the same.

If it was worded "we will randomly select a prize 1-6, but there's only actually a 5% chance you'll get the 6, and 60% chance you'll get a 1-3. Would as many people still play?

                • @Grish:

Then we have a program that will randomly output a number from 1-6, and the result will be your prize.

This is randomly selecting a prize from 1-6 right?

                  No.

Because there are 10,000 of prize 6, and 5,000 of prize 5, and 1000 of prize 4, and 250 of prize 3 and 50 of prize 2, and 5 of prize 1.

When you make your random draw, the chances of you drawing prize 1 are miniscule. You will almost certainly get prize 6.

This is how every tiered competition in the universe works.

They are still a random draw.

                  • @Nom: But my entire original point was simply that there's no mention of allocations/tiers. It's basically says you get a 1-6 at random.

Giving higher hopes of getting something decent, yet most end up with a 1-3.

            • +1

              @Grish:

              Maybe I'm missing something here

              You absolutely are.

When you play the Lotto, the odds of winning the first division prize are 1 in 8,145,060, the odds of winning the second division are 1 in 678,755 and the third division is 1 in 36,689.

They're still all completely random. They have different odds. This doesn't affect the randomness in any way.

Just like 1 in 20 odds of winning the 10 year prize in this draw. It doesn't stop being random, just because you know what the odds are.

  • 500gb block :(

  • unpopular opinion: too many DMCA takedowns regardless of newsgroup..can't go wrong with *arr with a VPN imo

    • I'd probably agree for niche older stuff but even niche newer stuff I don't have any trouble with

Certainly no problem with popular things

    • *arr isn't a content source though.. I assume you meant BT with VPN?

  • If I buy a second one, do I get 2 accounts? Or will they stack?

    • I have contact support for a similar question, will let you know what they say.

    • I got 2 accounts with same email. Maybe they can merge in a support request though idk

      • Yes, they can merge accounts - you just need to given them the usernames and the acocunt you want to keep.

5TB for $5 is a pretty sweet deal. Happy with that

    • Yeah that's very nice, would last me a few years easily.

  • +3

Win! 5 TB of $5. Exactly what I wanted. Happy with that

  • 3 mon unlimited :(

  • Thanks OP. Did the $5 rando and scored 1TB unlimited. Now I just gotta figure out what it is that I bought and how to use it. Any suggestions for movies/series/etc and iPad compatible software or web based is welcomed. Cheers.

    • You have entered a rabbit hole. Most use this to download "linux isos" to a NAS to stream to a jellyfin / plex media server.
This is a provider, you will also want an Indexer (alot of deals at the moment) and software such as sabnzb to download (free).
You have some reading to do. arrr

    • For some reason it's really hard to get a straight answer on this stuff, so this is my 1 hour of Usenet knowledge, hope it helps:

      1. Log in to newdemon.com members area to get the username you can use in an indexer or downloader

      2. Install SABnzbd (I was able to do this from the software centre in Linux Mint) and log in with the username from the members area, and the original password supplied by email

      3. Go to one of the free indexers and search for content (I registered for nzbfinder.ws which is free for a small number of downloads a day)

      4. Download the nzb file, then drop it into SABnzbd and it will download

No idea about how to integrate with arrs, iPad apps etc.

  • I got 1TB block.

  • In case anyone else is new to this and having problems using the credential in the email, you need to log in on the newdemon site and get a different username (same password as emailed)

  • I got 3 months unlimited. Which is including an upgrade offer to 12 months unlimited for $10 USD.

  • unless i've missed something here, number 7: the 10 years for $230 is worse than number 6.
number 6 gives 10 years for:
    35 + 10 + 10 + 35 + 10 + 10 + 35 + 10 + 10 + 35 = 200
    $30 less than #7

  • 'Service: Newsdemon [12 mo unlimited]'

    Noice….

I have no idea what I'm doing.

    • I wonder what happens when the 12 months is up. Do you get charged $5 USD for another year on automatic rebilling?.

  • 1TB block for AUD7.5
