Newly released Criterion Collection CC40 blu-ray box set - comes to around $17 per film which is pretty great for Criterion releases. Pretty close to the US black friday price of $400 USD, down from the normal $800 USD price.

Like all US Criterion BRs, it is region A so may not play natively on Australian blu-ray players. Multi-region players are available though: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/laser-multi-region-blu-ra…

I like the box set, wonderful movies in there, but hard to work out the market for it. Anyone who wants it for themselves and collects movies likely owns a number of these already. Could see it been popular with film students, although it’s not cheap either. Price is same issue for new collectors.

    • I feel like I'd potentially be the market for it. I think I only own about 5 or 6 titles from the set, but I'm far too poor to afford it and don't want region A criterions if I can help it

So… You're not the market for it then.

        • potentially

  • This is basically an expensive mantle piece item for pretentious arthouse film nerds like me (although i would never fork out that much). Does anyone even have a bluray/dvd player setup anymore?

      I do 🤷🏼‍♂️

Yes, plenty. There’s no danger people looking outside their own experiences is there.

Some people collect stamps, others Starbucks mugs. Some of us collect physical media.

Works out to be around $17 a movie… I certainly wouldn't be paying $17 for any of these movies on Bluray. Maybe if they were 4k Blurays it might be a more reasonable deal, but even then it would be a hard sell.

Sure, but this sounds like you don't buy criterion stuff anyway.

I think the cheapest criterion I've bought was $21 for a standard Blu-ray a few weeks ago. Cheapest I've ever seen one was around $19.50

Not one Marvel or DC movie, pass

  • I thought Blu rays were no longer region locked, is this not the case?

    • 99% of 4K blu rays aren’t. But standard blu rays definitely can be region locked.

    • 4K blu aren’t but the accompanying blu ray in the box from Amazon is usually is locked. So u can watch the movie but hard to get the nlu ray going. Be careful with some us 4k as the boxes can be weird sizes and shapes and often won’t fit on the shelf with normal 4k cases.

    • play on a computer, region doesn't matter with VLC.

  • Is it sad that I haven't heard of 95% of these movies, nor seen a single one?

    • No, it just means film and cinema hasn't been a significant part of your life. I'm sure you have other things going for you that I know little about.

Many of these films are considered all time greats, but also celebrate film as art rather than solely entertainment

In saying that, I've only seen 5 of the film's included, but have had my eye on most of them
