Good deal if you can’t stretch the extra $100 for the Edge 50 Neo, or absolutely require headphone jack or SD card.
Note no eSIM and no wireless charging.

    • +1

If you're patient, you won't need to stretch that much for the Neo

    • Wireless charging has been keeping my Edge 30 Neo alive for the last few months. My USB port is damaged and doesn't connect reliably; waiting on a new USB sub board to be delivered from aliexpress.

    • Edge 50 Neo has the wireless charging does it?

    • +2

I just use a $5 wireless charging receiver pad on mine, slipped inside the case. It charges at about 7W so its pretty slow but at least its a workaround.
      https://www.amazon.com.au/Wireless-Charging-Receiver-Adhesiv…

Stuff like missing headphone jack, no FM radio, no SD, and stupid rounded edge screens, can't easily be worked around like that.

      • I've used something like that before to an old phone. It caused the phone very hot.

        • Yes any wireless charging (including built-in) generates heat, thats why you don't use the 10W+ ones, they get too hot and keep cutting out.

The 7W ones I linked above are fine, I've use them extensively on this phone and others. I had to buy/return several types to find these ones that won't overheat.

    • what do you recommend for esim with similar price? i would prrefer an esim ah

      • Motorola Edge Neo 50. I bought one this week for $328. Comments above suggest people think it will drop further.

    • +1

This the same Neo?! $200! https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/880891

been looking for a decent phone for my dad, thanks Christmas present sorted

    • I'm doing the same for my mum, but not this one.

The parents are old enough that they dont upgrade (and dont want to) often, so with 1 out of its 3 years of this devices support already expired, I think the $30 saving over the G85, is a fools profit - Which also has 4 years of support.

The specs on the G84 are arguably better, but I have to keep reminding myself my parents dont care about that - They just want a working device, for as long as possible.

I pulled the trigger last Friday at $247… so this hurts!

    • +11

You lost $8. Go enjoy the phone.

      • It hasn't arrived yet… :(

        • So return it then !

          • +7

@Murkymerv: It's somewhere in transit across the middle of Australia. I'll just cop the $8 and weep loudly on internet forums :)

            • @thisisscotts: dunno if you can come back from this mate.. if i was you i'd be taking a one-way trip to Switzerland after such a traumatic misstep.

              • +1

@Iggemo: Definintely hoping for someone to post some deals on counselling sessions now.

  • This one or G85?

    • Wait for a Neo deal. See this comment.

    • +11

      Flat (G84)vs Curved Display (G85)
      12GB vs 8GB RAM
256 GB vs 128 GB Storage
      3.5MM JACK vs NO JACK
      IP54 vs No IP Rating
      Physical Sim vs ESIM

      You decide

      • G85 has E SIM, Physical SIM and (not or) Micro SD.
So it allows me to run two numbers and 1TB card which the G84 can't do.
Headphones jack is worked around with E1DA DAC.

    • Depends on how you use it.
If you like to upgrade midrangers often (every 2~3 years), this is arguably better.

If you're the type who just wants a long supported phone, and only do the minimum on it (or its for an older relative) I'd say the G85 is smarter.
It's still well above 'usable' specs, and has support until 2028.

    • Neither. I have the G84 moved from Redmi Note10 Pro as it was the end of 3G and not enjoying this as much.

  • +2

More expensive than the newer G85?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/879164

I know this G84 deal has more memory and storage, but may have one less Android OS upgrade, so …

  • +1

Has anyone else been having issues with this phone randomly turning off, even with a full battery? Has happened twice today already.

    • +1

Is your phone performing updates? Do you have like a maintenance mode on where it'll automatically restart your phone if it detects performance issues?

      • Not sure about the maintenance mode, I'll look into it. It's not even restarting, just completely shutting off.

        • Mine did this when I first got it - that and restarting. It doesn't do it now.

  • +5

I paid about $329 a month or so ago.
    Great phone for the price.

Havent had any issues with it at all.

    • +1

I agree. Possibly the best phone I've owned.

  • Wait for other stores to lower their prices for the same model within a few days. This recently happened with the Moto Edge Neo: I bought it for $397 from this store, and within a week, the price dropped to $318. Unfortunately, Mobileciti did not honor a refund or store credit.

  • How come BFRI30 works for this phone, but not for the Edge 50 Neo from the same store 😠

  • Thank you. Bought it!

  • Thank you! Just in time to replace old device not running some important apps anymore

  • Worst phone I ever owned due to notification issues (receive them about 1/4 of the time if that). Tried every possible fix re: power/timeout/snooze settings for apps. Haven't sent it back as it would be a struggle having the vendor test it to even replicate the issue.

    • Specific notifications from certain apps or all? I would be concerned with Text notification problems but not so much for app notifications.

    • I'm using the Motorola G84, i posted this in another forum post, but the fix for this is:

Under Network & Internet, go to the "Data Saver" section, and even though it is turned off, if you click on the "Unrestricted data" section and add the whatsapp etc into that section and flick the switch to on for those apps, they will work normally.

Strange i know, but it works since it works fine on both my friend and my G84.

    • +1

Haven't sent it back as it would be a struggle having the vendor test it to even replicate the issue.

I would contact Motorola AU. I did this and they were really, really helpful. The agent walked me through refreshing the phone and selectively restarting apps, then updating it. Hasn't done it since. The agent also followed up about two weeks after to make sure everything was still going smoothly. Samsung could learn A LOT.

      • Can you tell us the steps? That would be so helpful to many people here

        • +1

          Easy:

First, try a soft reset, which doesn't delete any data on your phone:

          1. Press and hold the Power button for 10 - 20 seconds.
          2. The device will restart and go through the boot-up sequence.

If that doesn't work and you can use your phone and Android is stable, the main instructions are here.

If Android is not stable, the instructions are on that page also, and are as follows:

          1. Turn off your phone and wait a few seconds.
          2. Press and hold the Volume Down and Power buttons for 2 to 3 seconds until you enter the bootloader.
          3. Use the volume buttons to navigate to "Recovery mode" and press the Power button to confirm.
          4. When you see the Android logo, hold the Power button and quickly press the Volume Up button to access the recovery menu.
          5. Use the volume buttons to select "Wipe data/factory reset" and confirm with the Power button.
          6. Navigate to "Userdata + Personalized content" and confirm with the Power button.
          7. Your device will now complete the reset process and reboot.

If that doesn't work then I highly recommend:

          1. Visit https://en-au.support.motorola.com/app/mcp/contactus/#
          2. Give them a phone call at the number on that page. [I think I tried Moli, the chat function, but I can't remember where I got to with that]
          3. Tell them what's happening.

          I really appreciated their help.

  • Why all this model special are for ebay plus. How to get this price if not ebay plus yet?

  • I don’t have eBay plus 😢

  • My Dad had a samsung, then went to apple. He hates his apple, and wants to change back, but seems reluctant to pay $450 for a semi decent entry Sammy.

Price wise this is better. I've never owned a motorola - what's the user interface like? Will be for a 70 yr old who is only "OK" with technology.

    • User interface is stock, so similar to Pixel.

  • I got this phone for my mother who had Poco X3 Pro and she is having no issues with this one. I just picked up one for me off this deal. Thanks OP!

  • beware they send out used/returned units in previous deals

    • Motorola Deals or Samsung Deals?

      • tcl but brand is irrelevant. any deal of 256+12G at 2xx bucks is highly likely to be opened box.

        • Only got opened box for Samsung A70 before. They actually resealed the box (but the contents has fingerprints all over the phone) with some black stickers that you can buy from eBay. They claimed they got them from their supplier and have no idea what's going on. They are happy for me to return to get refund.

          • +1

@bobokingdom: they clearly know what they were doing. any raised return request would be promptly approved with no explanation

  • I've got the 128gb version is there much different between this and the one I have

  • So I assume this is better than a G54? Looking for first phone for kid going into high school next year.

    • +3

Motorola position it as such, but the G54 has eSIM while the G84 does not.

The G54 has a single physical SIM slot with eSIM as its second slot while the G84 has 2 physical SIM slots.

eSIM means you don't have to wait around for a SIM to be delivered by physical post.

You can get set up in hours instead of days and it is better for the environment. It also doesn't force Australia Post to post yet another unnecessary letter on their loss making letter delivery service.

Other than that, I would say they are pretty close. G84 has faster charging and an OLED screen. G54 has slower charging and an LCD screen.

I would personally go for the G54 (and am currently using one) purely because eSIM allows me to change my 2nd SIM very quickly without having to waste time waiting for an envelope in the mail. Allows for immediate delivery of cheap data SIM bargains on OzBargain.

But some people who don't change plans often may value the faster charging and better screen on the G84.

      • And what about the G85? Was hoping to snatch a Neo for 200 for my kiddo. That failed. So now I'm looking at either the G54, G84 or G85.

I've always been a Samsung girl and only use Galaxy for myself. Currently using the S24 Ultra.
But I'm not going to get a new Galaxy as a starter phone for a 15yo.

But for under $300,- what are the better models of Motorola?

        • +2

Unfortunately, the G85 and G55 are both crappier than their successors.

The G84, G85, G54 and G55 all have 2 a78 performance cores and 6 a55 efficiency cores. The clock speeds vary a bit, but the overall CPU is broadly the same.

The G85 has no headphone jack and has a curved screen. So you have to use Bluetooth for audio and a curved screen makes it look very pretty, but it's bad for functionality. You will get accidental touches on the edges of the screen and fitting some screen protectors will be harder than it has to be, especially tempered glass ones that aren't as good for curved edges.

G55 is not available in variants with more than 4GB of RAM in Australia (for comparison, G54 has both 4GB and 8GB RAM variants, but only the 8GB RAM variant came to Australia). I wouldn't recommend buying a new phone in the 2020s with less than 6GB of RAM, even for modest users.

It's a huge shame and suggests that someone in Motorola or Motorola Australia didn't like the G54 and G84 cannibalising their higher end models.

Right now, the model that stands out the most to me is the Edge 50 Neo, but it targets a different demographic. It's a smaller phone with no headphone jack.

If you can find any G54s still in stock at a reasonable price, I'd take that. 8GB of RAM, has a headphone jack, supports eSIM for one of the 2 SIM slots. Main weaknesses are slow charging speeds (15W) and lack of software updates on a phone that's already a bit old.

The G84 has broadly the same strengths and weaknesses as the G54, but with faster charging, no eSIM (dual physical SIMs only) and an OLED screen that may matter to some people, but not to others.

          • @non-core promise: I do think OS updates are important. That's why I'll never ever get an apple. We have iPads and iPhones that work fine, but a lot of apps no longer work, because they aren't suitable for older OS versions.

So, will the 84 get less updates than the 85?

            • @Yeah OK: The G54 and G84 are one of the last generations before Motorola improved their software update policy.

Both of them are only guaranteed Android 14. Anything after that is not guaranteed. They will get an additional year of security updates after the last feature update, then that's it.

I believe the Edge 50 Neo and its contemporaries will get 5 years of software updates.

So if you care about software updates and don't mind the lack of headphone jack or the smaller screen, the Edge 50 Neo might be the choice for you.

From there the main problem is figuring out the sale timing to get the price down a bit. I'd say below $300 is a fair price (that $200 from eBay was a bit of an anomaly).

              • +1

@non-core promise: Yeah I tried to get the Edge Neo, but it was just a farce.
I guess I'll be looking at the 85, as I do want to get the updates for as long as I can.

                • @Yeah OK: G85 will not be getting anywhere near as many updates as the Edge 50 Neo, according to this.

One aspect of the Motorola Moto G84 5G that actively disappointed me was Motorola’s decision to ship that phone offering only one single Android OS upgrade. Sadly, nothing’s changed in the Motorola budget space, because that’s all the Motorola Moto G85 5G is going to see as well. You do get three years of security updates, delivered every two months, which is welcome, but seriously, Motorola, your competition is doing more in this space.

                  https://alexreviewstech.com/motorola-moto-g85-review-still-t…

                  • @non-core promise: That makes me missing out on that edge this morning, even more depressed :/

                    • @Yeah OK: Patience is key to bargains. There will always be another one around the corner.

If your current devices are still working, then put up with them for now, even if there are minor things you don't like about them.

                      • @non-core promise: Unfortunately, my son's iPhone 6 died 3 weeks ago. I've been waiting for a good Black Friday deal. He has a 365 day prepaid sim, and it's just wasting away right now.

                      • @non-core promise: After some consideration, I don't think more android updates are a must with a first phone for a teenager.

Like with his laptop that he has to have for school, I'll be impressed if he makes through 1 school year without breaking it.
For year 7, I bought him a brandnew chromebook. At the beginning of year 8, a bully had smashed the screen.
I am now only getting him 2nd hand laptops.

I was looking at refurbished mobiles, but they're almost the same price as getting them new. Locals on marketplace, are selling mostly iPhones, which I avoid at all costs.
If I really wanted to, I can root it and still put a newer Android version on it, but as it's just my son's phone, I'll probably just leave it as it is.
As long as all his apps continue to work, a new Android version won't be important for him. It's only important for me, which is why I have an S24.

          • @non-core promise: For any future readers, I meant to say the g55 and g85 are crappier than their predecessors, not successors. Oops.

    • +1

      Yes-> 'I assume this is better than a G54?'

Mobile phone: what do you want it to do ? Then chose a phone that have features to deliver.

If clueless, use G54 features as a starting point & as a GUIDE, https://nanoreview.net/en/phone-compare/motorola-moto-g84-vs…, https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=12543&idPhone…

Mobile phones have as many variables as a PC, while users preference & needs are wide & vast.

    • +1

I've used both 54 and 84, and they are basically identical

    Not an iphone

    • +9

I'll add that to the list of Pros.

  • Great handset for backbone and ppsspp, psex, and remote PS4 and 5 play.

  • dumb question.. but is this running android?

    • Yeah. Windows phones aren't really a thing now

    • I still use Nokia 640 LTE 4G phone calls, text, FM radio, SD card for music, Here Drive and HERE map that's all what I need. Windows OS is superior to IOS and Android.

  • Some Shady shit with ebay.

    Processed out payment,used paypal..

    can see the deduction..

But then get an email saying that there was an issue processing payment, and orders now canceled WTF

  • Is a great phone, arranged as a replacement for an elderly friend (who's quite the phone user) they were elated with it - and even I 30yrs or so their junior was impressed. Terrific value phone.
