You have to get there first.

    • Yeah, and, it's basically still half price compared to normal fares.

      • +1

Normal? Oh please don't defile this word in the case of Australia air travel as of now.

    • +2

Not sure why you were downvoted. So many people I know have had their flights cancelled and delayed by Jetstar.

      • +5

I can't understand why I got down voted I've had them cancel 4 flights & leave me stranded all in one year I will not fly with them again.

  • +29

It will be your return flight that gets cancelled.

    • Would this actually result in you needing to buy a new flight with no credit offered?

      • +4

no, but the new flight offered will be the week after your originally scheduled one

        • +1

Why? Do they put a lower priority on rescheduling these return for free flights?

          • @snoopydoop: cant create a seat if the very next flight is already full, then your fighting with everyone else on your flight who got cancelled

who knows how they prioritise people on your flight since jetstar doesnt have a status level like other airlines

            • @MrThing: I mean I've had a Jetstar flight cancel and have the rescheduled flight be a couple of hours later, are you implying these return for free flights are somehow different or just making a general remark about the airline?

Comment I'm replying to perhaps implies the return for free flight being cancelled would somehow be worse than usual?

              • @snoopydoop:

are you implying these return for free flights are somehow different or just making a general remark about the airline?

general remark, I have had jetstar domestic flights cancelled and the next one available is 24hrs later which is no good as heaps of people fly for a specific time critical reason whether business meetings / work or holiday/connecting flights

                • +1

@MrThing: Yeah totally. Would never fly for business purposes or if there were something essential either end, but just more concerned if they can use the"free flight" as a loophole to treat you worse in some way, like you're not a "paying customer" so you have less rights or something.

                  • +1

@snoopydoop: You shouldn't be treated any differently if your $0 flight is cancelled and you need to be moved to another flight. Flight cancellations and choosing your new flight is generally "first in best dressed" - whether you log onto the online portal to select a new flight, or if you line up at the desk at the airport and speak to staff. People will be moved off the cancelled flights onto new flights until they fill up. If you have a connecting flight after your cancelled flight you might be pro-actively moved so that you can make your connection, but it depends on the situation.

Where the $0 flight is a disadvantage is if you need to change that flight, as you would most likely need to pay "fare difference" - the difference in cost between how much you paid for your old flight and the cost of the new flight (which would basically be full price).

      • They sent me a text about 3 hrs before the flight was due to leave, but I was driving a rental back to the airport and only saw the text about an hour later. They had 4 options for other flights to put me on for free. By the time I read the text the only option that was left was flight Syd - Mel, overnight in Melb, then a 6:30 am flight to Adelaide. I had to be in Adelaide for a very important ( and expensive)
appointment, so I had no choice.

    • +1

No issues besides a 30min delay for my Korea return for free.

    • Ours that got cancelled was our initial flight Perth to Gold Coast. Worst thing is they sent a text about 3 hours before we were due to leave despite knowing that the flight hadn't left from the Gold Coast the day before so they knew well in advance. We had to purchase Perth - Sydney - Gold Coast flights and yup, you guess it, with Qantas! They did offer us a flight 24 hours later but we had paid for accommodation and were meeting someone on the GC.

      • See comment 2 above.

  • Does it apply to business class ticket as well?

    • It doesn't seem like it as it is for 'Starter' fares only.

      • thanks. it looks like they never run good deals on international business tickets :(

        • In the past they would run international business class specials once sometimes twice a year.
Haven't seen any for a few years now.

    • Plus jetstar business is a joke - may as well just get extra leg room seat in eco

      • Hmm, I wouldn't say a joke, but it's nowhere near the standards of full service carrier business class.
More like Premium economy on a full-service airline, or business class on a domestic flight.

  • +5

Literally got my flight cancelled last weekend on my first time flying with Jetstar.

Ozbargain dooming was actually right for once, fair enough

    • Did they put you on another one for free?

      • Yeah, but lost a whole day and had to stress about making it back home for an appointment which was not fun. They said it was weather related but some Qantas and Virgin had planes flying to Melbourne at the same time

        • +1

Check your travel insurance. In cases where your flight is cancelled/delayed and you have a pre booked appointment (this is defined by the insurance company), you may be able to rebook on another airline that is operating the route and be compensated through insurance.

        • +13

          that's was not Jetstar's fault.
It was a very foggy day. dozens of domestic flights was cancelled across all airlines.

  • some great prices there

  • +3

It took a couple of mess up's from Jetstar's side forcing me to go through their support which is absolutely atrocious, 1 of which was a return for free fair. Now, $300 seems cheap to avoid them.

    • What happened with the return for free fare, were they arguing that the flight wasn't worth anything so they don't need to help you or something?

      • They left two hours late travelling internationally so i missed my connecting flight in syd (also operated by them) they tried to charge me for it and didn't want to pay the parking because i was over time

        • Argh that's so frustrating. Did you manage to get them to comply on both points eventually? If so, what tipped them over the line?

          • @snoopydoop: of course! otherwise i'd hand my OzB membership in lol.

Did teach me a valuable lesson though. If the flight that's not jetstar is 300 more expensive, it's likely money, time and effort on top of food drinks and peace of mind. Which in my opinion, is a bargain for $300!

  • Brisbane to Bali?

    • +11

why have a sale, jetstar knows all the qld bogans will still fly to bali sale or no sale

need to pump the numbers with some trendy melbourne people to bali

      • +2

You are correct. We are coming

        • +4

Pack the singlets, pack the speed dealers, pack the boogie boards we are on our way to bali

          • @MrThing: Gonna get my sleeve done for 5k ay

      • +2

Never been to Bali/thailand but I've been to HK, Korea, Fiji and I'm a QLDer born and raised haha

  • +2

I don't need to go to Japan again….

    • +13

      But you want to ;)

    • +1

You do need to go to Japan again.

  • +7

To counteract all the supposed jetstar horror stories, I've flown to SE Asia 1-2 times per year most years before and after covid, and never had more than a 1 hour delay.

    • +6

Yeah Jetstar wasn't too bad for me as well. Had a return flight from Seoul that was cancelled and we were put on the next day's flight (which ended up being fairly empty so was a great experience with more space).
They paid for the extra night of hotel of our choice, and even the shuttle to the airport

    • +1

Me neither and I've also flown internationally a number of times with them.

Actually the last flight they managed to board everyone early and we got into Sydney an hour ahead of schedule.

  • they are bringing in more of these A320neos, albeit, newer versions. The seats in the ones they have now are not good and a nightmare for overnight flights, as there is no adjustable headrest and so nowhere to try to lean your head against when trying to sleep and a really weird shape so you never feel comfortable. I certainly hope the seat is more comfortable than their current ones. Ok for short haul or day flights to shorter distance international, but NOT for overnight international. The dreamliners are good, but if they start replacing those with these on longer haul flights, then I might be skipping Jetstar, unfortunately.

    • +1

I flew a CI NEO last week and it was very very nice for short haul. Quiet, good temperature control, fantastic IFE with bluetooth but not enough toilets and no adjustable headrests - not ideal for medium haul.
      https://seatmaps.com/airlines/ci-china-airlines/airbus-a321n…

Haven't flown the Jetstar NEOs but they will no doubt be cramped and the toilet capacity will be even more of a problem.
      https://seatmaps.com/airlines/jq-jetstar-airways/airbus-a320…
      https://seatmaps.com/airlines/jq-jetstar-airways/airbus-a321…

      • I could put up a bit with cramped and lower toilet capacity, but as many flights to Bali etc are overnight on the way back, I can tell you that I got NO sleep whatsoever on that flight back to Sydney. It was like torture on the NEOs they have now. It was bearable on the way over. We have decided we will no longer get the overnight flights from Bali and will get the day flights and stay an extra night. They had better not replace the dreamliners with the new NEOs on the flights to/from Phuket….from a pic I saw they have a similar style of seat, with nowhere to rest your head when trying to sleep.

    • surely they wont be running A320neos long-haul?
I get domestic trips, Trans-Tasman or even some Pacific Islands, but anything longer than that and they need a wide body?

      • they shouldn't even do them to Bali from Sydney, but they do. I think anything that has overnight flights should be a no go

        • I did not know that. Wow, that's shocking.
I mean.. if the price is significantly cheaper than Qantas, Virgin etc maybe I get it.

If they could educate their guests why it's cheaper (i.e. the flight is not as comfortable as more expensive flights) then I think they wouldn't get so much negative feedback from passengers, otherwise they are setting themselves up for complaints.

          • @ryefig: they used to use the dreamliner on that route and although I always have issues getting sleep on a plane, at least I could get a few hours. The shouldn't have changed it to the Neo. I'll put up with it for day flights, but not overnight. Lesson learned. I even bought a blow up cushion that you can put your head on and put your arms inside it, but it wasn't tall enough, even putting it on the tray table, so that was a waste of time….I tried it every way possible but no….and the seats are such a weird shape and so uncomfortable. who ever designed them should be shot.

        • Not many flights between Australia and Bali are widebodies.

    • They are A321neos, and are quite common for short haul international flights.
JQ doesn't operate them on "long haul" flights, they don't have the range to go to Hawaii etc.

      • even Bali to Sydney is bad enough as an overnight flight. Ok for day, but not overnight

  • "Melbourne to Uluru (Ayers Rock) from $115"

That sounds nice, let's check if Ayers Rock Resort is having a sale. Yay, they are 40% off 3 night stays! Woah, still $400 per night means $1200. That's cute.

    • +1

Just camp dude.. proper outback experience under the stars.

      • +2

That's an idea but I don't have the equipment.

Car rental is also 3X what it was pre COVID. (Had Uluru flight, car, hotel all booked for April 2020. LOL).

EDIT: The true OzB way is to use a nearly free one way rental to camp and drive home. This is hopefully what I do nearer the end of summer.

    • -1

Out of principle I would never consider going there. It's just a place set up as an extortionate rort, and the reviews of all the accommodation there say it all.

  • Flew to Bali with Jetstar recently (direct from Adelaide) no issues whatsover.

  • Would be nice to get some offers for this January

  • +1

Anyone with jetstar club and have 5 minutes -
May you please check Brisbane to Tokyo Jan 24th to Feb 7th is compatible with free return?

    Sincerely,
    Raymond Holt.

  • +1

It's worth the trip to Japan just to drink cheap booze for a few days

  • Someone with Club Jetstar - I see dates outside the advertised range that have the little club jetstar symbol.

I'm curious whether the return for free works outside of the listed dates? Or - can you fly in earlier than the dates listed - then return for free during the advertised dates?

    • +1

You can visibly see all the $0 fares now, logged in or not. That symbol would probably be the regular cheaper club fares. But yes, I can't see why you couldn't depart outside the window as long as you return in the window you will get a $0 fare if showing available.

      • Ahh I see - you can't see them in the flight picker but once you choose a flight it will pop up if you happen to choose a date it applies to.

  • +1

What you pay is who you sit with. Got on the Bangkok-perth one a few month ago due to shortage of flights available elsewhere and it was horror. Flight was on time but the people… noisy, smelly and just annoying.

    • +2

      Does that include you?

  • +2

Or…. Sydney to Sydney after a burst tire.

  • Thanks.op

  • Horrible flight from Osaka to Sydney red eye on their 787's just a week ago. Packed in like sardines, dirty and smelly plane as soon as we walked in. The seat looked like something out of a garage sale, it was half ripped and had stains on it. I get its a no frills airline, and everything is an add-on but they didn't even offer water. They clearly haven't maintainted these planes as well as other airliners do and the service is abysmal. Jetstar for an overnight flight never again

    • +2

The 787 is the dreamliner right ? I flew it once and it was not cramp and quite good, maybe they changed recently ??

      • Yes the dreamliner. Never said it was cramp, they haven’t maintained the planes very well and the cleanliness wasnt very good either.

        • +9

Oh I read packed in like sardines so I just assume you mean it was cramp.

  • No issues besides a 30min delay for my Korea return for free. Might be lucky or whatever.

    • +1

I had a return for free to Korea delayed by 5 hours BUT they text and emailed me the night before as this was a known problem due to engineering or something.
Got a $15 voucher at check in to spend at the airport. Couple that with the flight delay pass that activated on my Westpac Travel, I spent pre flight in the lounge and spent the voucher on a $14 roll from the airport for the plane.

      • Jetstar is a gambling airline. How very Australian

  • Does it include school holidays usually?

  • I'd enjoy this more if there was somewhere I had the time and money to go to, still a great deal though.

  • i get error

  • Got a return flight to Honolulu for $450 return. not bad

    • Honolulu deals are the best. Accommodation prices are the killer :(

      • I agree. Hotels in Waikiki beach area especially. Most than the cost of flights per night.

        • How much are you willing to pay? The only reason I'm not booking is that hotel prices look insane.

          • @watwatwat: I got a hotel on Waikiki using points but is around $170 usd + taxes. There are cheaper hotels out of the beach area, I stayed at Hyatt place once earlier and that was around $100 usd a night.
I have stayed at the Westin and Hilton but they are quite expensive for my dates

I think you looking between 300 aud / day if you want value and comfort in the beach area

  • Typing this after getting accommodation 4 hours after today's cancelled flight JQ7. But to be fair this was my first time it got cancelled, delays sure, but cancelled, never until today.
Will I not choose them again? doubt it at these sale prices.

  • +1

Had a good experience with them earlier this year. Suprisingly Jetstar flights to Japan were the only ones not delayed/ cancelled. Qantas and Virgin were lol.

    • +1

I concur, at least for our flights taken this year! Flew Virgin recently to Launceston, flight was delayed for close to 2 hours, we boarded and no apology nor explanation as to why the flight was delayed, the audacity really, they just carried on as if nothing happened, late night flight became red eye flight lols. At least Jetstar crew apologises for any delays from experience. Have flown Jetstar 6 times this year and only 1 got delayed for half an hour, cross fingers they are really doing their best to improve.

  • Any deals to vietnam in feb? I am keen to go again

    • They have ongoing Melb-Saigon for around $220 each way (unsure on dates), that's close enough to as good as it's going to get

  • +1

Went to Tokyo at the start of the year on a return for free. Great trip, no problems with Jetstar. Would love to hit this special up, but going in Aug-Sep would be straight ass. It gets too hot in Tokyo to be out and about everyday.

    • +2

I just warn it is not good season in this sale period.
      Topical typhoon season.
5 typhoon came in this September and only 3days without them.
This is a reason to have sale.

      • Last return for free that I took up was in March, which was perfect. These deals are pretty common, so I think I'll wait for a non-summer trip, haha. It does rain a LOT.
