when i need to pick up dog poo!

  • Is this good to use when spray painting cars with 2K clear coat? Is it better than this one ?https://sydneytools.com.au/product/3m-6251-spraying-half-face-respirator-kit-a1p2

    • Can't confirm but be careful with 2k isocyanate, be sure to have goggles and a full suit.

Believe you need one with a charcoal carbon filter

The 3M website has good information about what type of respirators to use for different projects:
      https://www.3m.com.au/3M/en_AU/safety-centers-of-expertise-a…
And as Velau said, you might need a something like a full facemask for 2k painting.

    • 3M are actually pretty cagey about whether their masks filter isocyanate. This is because they aren't specifically certified for it. They will filter it, but not at higher concentrations and saturate easily. If you are painting with 2k and smell the banana smell, ditch and replace cartridges. An external air supply is the way to go if you are painting indoors. Outdoors you should be fine though you do risk particulate in your paintwork. As others have mentioned, use full suit as it absorbs through skin.

    • For 2K clear coat with isocyanate, we would use a powered air-purifying respirator. Something like this: https://sydneytools.com.au/product/3m-capm307c-at019494742-p…, but you also need to get the correct filter cartridge. Like the A1P3. https://sydneytools.com.au/product/3m-tr6310anz-uu008996215-…. There is a very specific use duration that each cannister has, and even if you don't use it, once it is open, it continues to lose its filtration effectiveness against vapours because it is constantly adsorbing compounds from the air. Make sure you throw it out and use a new one if unsure.

The slight positive pressure from the air inside the face space ensures that filtered air keeps flowing outwards and avoids any bypass between a respirator and skin, especially if you have facial hair.

Personally, I prefer to use an iso-free 2K clear. Not worth risking your health.

      • I'm only planning to restore my headlights mate, not spray paint professionally…

  • If you get a 3M respirator mask, consider what cartridges you need. The cartridges have a code like A1P2. A1 means something, P2 means something. Internet will have information on what the letters and numbers mean. Depending on what you are trying to protect from you may need a cartridge that does more than A and P. Maybe E and maybe B and maybe something else?

  • pretty dang close to all time low according to camelcamelcamel - $56.90 (Jun 21, 2019). thanks op!

    • Yeah definitely, I paid about $70 for mine 6ish months ago. But it's really great, I've used it while spraying weeds and cutting timbers. Very comfy and I sweat a lot less in it than the little white masks.

buy 3m respirator at aliexpress, they sell it like for $15 but it is better to buy filter from reputable store in australia store ig, can't trust filter in aliexpress

    • link?

something like this, I had these sort of mask from australian store and aliexpress, they are literally same but price is practically double the price. Filter is most important part of respirator not respirator itself. buy genuine 3m filter

        • +2

Literally the same is not the same.
Valves, material, shape, size even the elastic all make a difference. Again, if you are buying safety gear to be safe then buy it to be safe as possible?
Professional spray painters use Sundstrom from a reason.

        • +1

That is a counterfeit 3M half face respirator. Not worth risking your health. The filter can be from Australia and super good, but if the respirator has poor moulding or some flashing, it will allow bypass between the respirator and your skin, making your genuine filter no better than the cheap respirator.

Also, why would you cheap out on a part that you buy once and use many times/years? Even at half the price, you are not saving much as the cost of a respirator is in the filters themselves.

          • @Sleepycat3: It's incredibly easy to test a half face respirator for fit. You just suck in a breath with the cartridges off and your hands covering the valves.

Agreed that it's not much point buying a fake, but these things are not super high tech devices that are prone to obscure failure modes.

        • It looks the same, but the material is different, and there is a huge difference in comfort level.

  • +2

I wouldn't buy 3M gear from AliExpress….why waste money on fake safety gear?…

But I would recommend buying the best respirator -Sundstrom SR100
    When you know you know!

  • Also worth mentioning that these things are a real pain to use with glasses (unless I am doing it wrong).

  • not really comfortable for long period …. had been wearing one of those during COVID

    • Way more comfortable than n95 disposable masks!

  • Perfect for my next scav run

  • +1

I've used this for resin printing, very comfortable and very effective, noting the included filters aren't suitable for resin so I had to get some extra filters

  • just fyi, for anyone that use it as a job, 3M™ Paint Project Respirator with Quick Latch 6502QLPA1-A-PS, this exists.
little thing like that makes day in day out job just a bit easier, it adds up, wish it was on sale too.
