cant believe this thing is still so expensive up till this day.

      https://www.aftvnews.com/2024-google-tv-streamer-benchmark-s…

CPU-wise its only worse than the latest Fire cube. It's better than everything else though.
GPU-wise its still better than anything else on the market.

      Unfortunatelly.

      • +3

Been using it 3-4 years and love it. AI upscale is great and it appears bullet proof. New model (if it ever comes) should be able to decode alien messages from space and take us to Mars.

  • +13

Still surprised that Nvidia hasn't released any new model since.

I guess busy printing money with GPU/AI.

    • +1

Everyone is still saying they won't until the next Switch is announced - with a new 'Tegra' chip to drive it.

      • +1

        Everyone ???

        • +5

I'm amazed you're not up with this news. Yes, literally everyone. I can't move for 'tegra' this, 'new chipset' that.

          • -3

            @ColPow11:

            literally everyone.

            Nope…

            • @jv: Stop the Press

For once I actually agree with JV. Wonders will never cease.

@ColPow11 You might want to check what "Literally" means.

              • +6

@uncyspam: @uncyspam luckily your boy brought receipts: https://www.oed.com/dictionary/literal_adj?tab=meaning_and_u…

"II.6.b. 1857 – colloquial. Used in figurative or hyperbolic expressions to add emphasis or as an intensifier: veritable, real; complete, absolute, utter."

                • +1

@ColPow11: That is not literally the definition of literally.

                  That is the colloquial definition.

                  So you are literally wrong.

                  :D

                  • @virtual81: Literal is the direct opposite of figurative, so using ‘literally’ as a substitute for ‘figuratively’ it’s like people saying ‘wow, fire is so cool’ … wait a ..

      • +1

there's new tegra chips released all the time.

    • -2

no need to mess with things that just works!

  • +3

    5 years later. Wow.

    • +13

Realistically coming up on 10 since it's mostly the same product it was in 2015.

    • -1

They don’t become the most valuable company by being cheap.

  • Nah need aus plug one… pass

  • -2

I beg to differ $218 will come back. No way this 5 year old tech is worth $300.

    • I would agree, however it's still so far in front of competitor devices and Nvidia knows that.

Until a rival device emerges (or they can be arsed upgrading this version) price will likely stay where it is.

  • Are these still very slick to use today for a TV? Or would another one be better? E.g firetv or Apple TV

    • These are still considered the pinnacle because they offer Dolby Vision and Atmos, and have AI up-scaling. If you don't need these two specific requirements, AppleTV is apparently excellent.

      • Firestick 4k max has Dolby vision and almost doesn't it? No idea on ai upscaling though.

      • Specifically Lossless Atmos - ATV supports lossy spatial audio.

        • And EAC3 Atmos depending on which app you at it from (Plex doesn’t always work but Infuse usually will on the same file).

  • +6

$200 dollars more than it should be

    • so the apple TV should be a fiver?
as the owner of both (multiple apple TV units actually)

Shield TV Pro >>>> daylight >>> Apple TV

bought the apple tv for specific situations where all audio formats won't be required.

  • must be the switch effect… if they can charge so much for that POS SoC … so can Nvidia LOL

  • +3

I still use my shield tv pro everyday :) I think it is the only feasible option to get dolby vision / dolby atmos working with Kodi

    • -2

I doubt it. I had HDR10+ and Atmos on an Odroid N2 3-4 years ago. Im sure another model would do DV, probably the N2 does I just don't have a display with it.

      • -2

Neg without a reason? Thanks OzB

  • Ever since this thing stopped doing streaming to PC I've stopped using it. Netflix on it doesn't seem to appear as true 4K no matter what I do with the AI scaling settings - very obvious in the edges of animated shows. I just use my TV's one now and it looks good.

    • streaming to PC or streaming from PC?

      • curious too, as gamestream still works as of the latest driver (if you have GFE installed). wonder if he means the hardware on the Shield Pro isnt allowing it.

        • Oh does it? I just saw them say an update ages ago removed it and didn't even try.

          • @mackdiddy: Still works. I use GFE for my main machine and sunshine for my VM to stream from sharing the same gpu

      • Oops, streaming from PC. I thought they removed it.

        • Gamestream is not available on the new "Nvidia App" but still available on Geforce Experience.

However, it is preferred to use Moonlight these days as the streamer as it has a lot more fine tunings.

        • +1

You can use Sunshine on your host PC instead, which is an open source implementation of the Nvidia game streaming protocol.

          • @rkura: Oops yeah I mean Moonlight + Sunshine combination.

Just last week I pulled out the plug on my Shield. I've taken my 8Tb drive and put it into my mac mini m1, which is now my plex server. No idea the implications on DTS, or Dolby or Atmos or Dobly Vision etc…. But for over 80% of the content (mostly tv) it seems to be working pretty good, just needs some further testing which I haven't had time for.

    • What do you use to control it - remote?

      • I go through the native apps on my LG tv including Plex. Only the Plex app would access my Mac Plex server.

  • Nah, I wouldn’t pay that much for a 5 year old machine

  • +1

Man I wish they would release a new one my shield from 2017 is on its last legs.

  • -1

Had mine for 3 years buggy software & poor updates I wouldn't buy this model again imo.

  • I just know if I cave and buy one of these Nvidia will almost immediately release a new model, I swear by it..
You'll all have to keep on waiting because I'm not going to cave :P

    • please cave, so I can then buy the new model!

  • I've had mine for 4 years now and still working flawlessly and so are my other 4 amazon firesticks. The remote broke and replaced it with after market ones but they only lasted a couple months and the latest one just 3 days so I bit the bullet and bought the original remote for $99 off amazon.

  • Does it do AV1 decoding? transcoding?
