Arc'teryx on me no we don't rock no Patagonia

The quality of Arc has gone down significantly and they raised their prices 20% across the board in Australia a few months back so I'm not really sure if it's a bargain.

      It is Chinese owned

      • Not according to Wikipedia

        • Read again, history section, find ‘2019’

        • Anta owns Amer

          • @King Steuart: Anta (Chinese) bought out Amer (Finnish) years ago.

With the exception of the Alpha SV, all manufacturing for Arc'teryx has always been made in a foreign country even before the buyout. The Arc'teryx Theta back when I bought it in 2008 was labelled Made In China

Arcteryx used to be fantastic when they were focussing on technical gear. But their quality have taken a tumble with their recent surge in popularity in streetwear. If you're looking for actual hiking and technical gear I'd look elsewhere.

    • Any recommendations in mind? I was going to get into technical gear and arcteryx was gonna be it

      • +1

Macpac for sure. Their tech gear is actual tech gear, used by the NZ Alpine team. They have specific use items for mountaineering, climbing, running, that most mainstream brands stop providing (unless you are sponsored). Seriously, which brands sell a Polartec alpha base layer - if they don’t they aren’t a tech brand anymore.
        Also, Rab and OR.
Buy online from Europe, UK, or US.

        • ooh thanks. have gotten a few of them for the basic stuff but might look into it

      • Like afie mentioned, Macpac for the easiest availability in Australia and far cheaper pricing. But Rab, OR, Kuhl, Mammut, Prana, La Sportiva are all far better than Arcteryx now in their own respective niches. Patagonia for something more fashionable around town.

      • Good general tech clothing brands (in random order):
        *Norrona
        *Klattermusen
        *Rab
        *Mountain Equipment

If looking for mountain gear, or ski gear, or climbing gear, or some other specific activity gear then there are brands that have good product lines for specific activities. For example Mammut, Ortovox, Patagonia, Fjällräven, The North Face (Summit series), Salewa, Hestra, Osprey, Black Diamond, Outdoor Research, Mountain Hardwear, and more. With those brands there are amazing pieces but a lot can be passed by.

Arcteryx used to be better quality than it is now in my opinion. In 2018 and earlier Alpha SV used to be one of the best outdoor jackets for bad weather. No idea if it is any good now. Arcteryx backpacks at that time used to be really good.

There was a video that came into my youtube recommended the other day about their jackets and seeping chemicals into the water, worth a look in you're into the jackets as it'll probably inevitably rub into your skin.

      This video I believe

      • Yep, that's the one.

    • That video is about particular type of membrane. Gore-tex. But, the chemical danger also may apply to other membranes. Arcteryx is just an example of a company that uses Gore-tex. Other companies use Gore-tex as well.

  • whenever i only see chinese shoppers inside the store, must be very popular in china

  • To Beta jacket, or not to Beta jacket…

  • My first arc piece is atom bought in 2019. Still holding up great. Can't compare to the pre-Chinese takeover, but so far i am happy with the quality.

    • Atom jackets and vests and all it's variants were made in Bangladesh even before Anta bought out Amer

  • For all the naysayers that Arc'teryx or it's parent Amer went downhill after being bought by Anta, is ludicrous.

Not many know that Arc'teryx has always had manufacturing for some of its products in foreign countries - the only exception is that the Alpha SV is still manufactured in Vancouver. The machinery is custom made and shipped to all the factories.

This is the complete list as listed by https://outdoorcrunch.com/where-is-arcteryx-made/ for where it's all made

    • I bought a Camosun parka a few years ago ($560) and it’s really good. Thick outer shell (Goretex) seems quite rugged and hard wearing compared to my old Goretex shell. It’s very noisy. Then it’s got feather or something filling. And it’s long so it half covers my thighs. Therefore its really dry down to my knees, super windproof and very warm. I’m happy with it (wanna be for the price!).

Edit: just checked, it’s made in China.

    • it is overpriced rubbish high fashion wannabe, and ugly as hell. especially when it is chinese owned and they try to hide it. high fashion and made in china don't associate

  • Darn the Gamma pants I wanted aren't available
