Long time lurker first time poster, please be gentle. Title format copied from an earlier deal courtesy of Look Up.

I'd been looking for a cheap phone for an elderly friend, who needed a new backup device after the 3G shutdown and had a budget of only $100. Unfortunately she was late for the 3G phone trade-in offers and the recent dirt cheap Nokia deals.

After checking the used market as well as researching the dumb phones out there, I found this at HN (seems to be stock in most places) and easily price matched at JB. Price beat at OW was also a possibility, but there wasn't much stock available nearby (ACT).

For some product info (also copied Look Up's deal):

I realised I could have paid with an NIB gift card (3.5% off) as soon as I made the payment. Rookie mistake…

      • +5

        We all make those mistakes.
        Very little $ lost.
Just enjoy your find & first post & now first comment🎉

Thought this comment said final & first post 😂

Nice, a microSD slot - a feature not found in high end models.

    • +3

This is the only reason Sony gets their rediculous premiums out of me. 3.5mm jack and MicroSD on flagships.

      • And it still works with the 3G shut down? If so where are you sourcing yours from?

        • +1

Picked it up form Yodobashi Camera in Osaka.

Telstra seems to dislike the IMEI on mine, but so far the other 2 major telcos are still chill with it. (touch wood).

There's a huge thread on whirlpool about which regions work and which don't.

  • Is a charger and case included like the G54

    • +3

Info on the JB site says:
Inbox Accessories: moto g04, Guides, SIM tool, Protective cover

      Meanwhile, the motorola site says:
Components: Protective cover, 10W charger (included only with carrier not with retail), USB Type-C cable, guides, SIM tool

So probably no charger or cable in the unlocked ones going around. But at only 10W, chances are you already have something similar (or better) on hand.

Only came with case when bought from big w a few weeks ago

    • Good to know! Just bought G54 from Amaysim deal. I am shopping a case at the moment.

    Thank you; grabbed 10

  • does this phone take Esim?

  • This is so cheap, hmmm

Is there a reason to own a second cheaper and budget phone alongside your usual phone?

    • +3

Your visitors from overseas will thank you when they discover their phones don't work here due to the 3G shutdown :-)

      • Surely if they can afford to travel internationally they can afford a normal phone?

    • +1

Bought this at $116 two months ago and took it overseas with me to put a local sim in and used as hotspot. Also use it for Disney+ sometimes when using my other phone

    • Having a second mobile is a good choice when travelling. Mobiles do go wrong or get lost. Saved me in remote Japanese village.

Am using 2 mobiles now, with one as hotspot.

    • Being an elderly person living alone, my friend keeps a spare phone for emergencies in case her main one fails. Funnily enough, the Moto G04 might be the better device!

      • +1

They're wise to have a 2nd mobile. They're life may depend on it one day.

Gives them the opportunity to upgrade. Depends if they don't mind getting used to a different mobile environment.

(My elderly Father refused to use any mobile, computer or even a VCR!! But did wear an emergency pendant, but failed to use it in an emergency. Luckily I found him in time.)

Gave out 2 free Nokia 110 from HN trade in Deal. Keyboard mobiles are what many older people are used to.
Without a touch screen - which is tiny & hard to read, plus needing to remember the Nokia system to access it - I couldn't get rid of it fast enough!!

  • Best Expired Deal Ever - Hope it gets repeated in the future for Black Friday or Boxing Day
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/841511

    • Bought Motto G54 in that Deal for $135🎉

      • Did you pay with gift cards purchased at 10% discount to get that price point

        • Yes 10% GC from old Deal!
$10 Perks voucher failed to arrive in time.

    • +1

The G54 is what I ended up getting for myself! I actually missed that awesome deal (old phone only decided to die a week after that), but managed to get a good enough price a while later: $200 at Good Guys with 20% cashback to bring it down to roughly $160. Very satisfied with the G54 so far.

  • How are the future security updates looking like? Thinking about getting it as a work phone, but don't want to be changing phones too often if the updates aren't guaranteed for at least another 3 years or so.

    • At this price not many would really consider software updates as a concern. Motorola isn't too good at keeping their cheapest models updated, but they recently increased their update promise to 5 years for the edge 50 neo, which was on sale for $350ish recently (and might still be available in some stores).

Once you factor in tax deductions for work use, I'd say the pricier model is worth it.

Looks like TGG has just price matched - https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/motorola-g04-64gb-concord-bla….

Combine with 18% cashback from TCB to get to ATL.

    • Whoa! Haven't picked up my JB order yet, so might have to cancel that and grab it here instead…

      • Would JB cancel orders which were done using JB gift cards?

        • +1

I quickly looked up the process, and they don't mention payment method being an issue, so I assume it's fine? Relatedly, a few years ago I had a TV purchase cancelled (they didn't have stock). I had paid in gift cards and was refunded in gift card value.

Bought 1 weeks ago at $127. Very good build quality for the price. Comes with a case but no cable let alone charger. It is very slow, not recommended as a daily driver. The battery seems to be good.
I put it always connected to the car as a Android Auto console. The responsiveness seems to be good. The only downside it, it need to be manually unlocked to activate the android auto. I tried multiple cables and software solutions but ended up with no luck.

    • When you say slow, how slow? I am looking to pick up a spare as a just in case for a family member. Would they be able to use WhatsApp and Viber, or Chrome with relative ease or will they be plagued with crashing and unresponsiveness?

      • I use mine as a spare phone, for watching Disney+ and light browsing and find it ok

      • I am using a S24u. It would be a very bias comment.
Basically, when switching apps, you can see the animation drop frame rate significantly.
I presume single app usage shall be alright.

  • So much cheaper than the g85 is it better?

    • You can use g85 as a phone. But from the comments someone might find the g04 will lag a lot. Just look at the price difference.

      Full disclosure I use a g85.

  • Can this be used as a hotspot to share Wireless Network while the uplink to Internet is also via another Wireless Network ?

Acting as both Access Point and Client at the same time.

    • Im pretty sure it can not.

      • Thank you ! Heard Android can do it for cruise wifi I guess I will go for other alternatives
