This is one of those rare moments in Australian consumer history where we actually have advantages compared to overseas (since Breville is an Australian company). People in places like the US happily pay $1500+ USD as RRP for these machines, the same price they pay for equally priced Italian machines. This is due to the feature set and what you get in this machine just being so good. If you're in the market to drop ~$1k on a coffee machine, this really is a no-brainer.

Those holding out for the sub $1k heydays I wouldn't wait. That's based on an old RRP we're likely to never see again after they updated/improved the machine and cleared out the old stock

mine is still chugging after 3 years!

    • +2

What’s the expected lifetime on these models based on 4-6 cups equivalent a day everyday?

      • +2

had myn since 2016, had a major service recently and new pump, now its better then when it was new

        • May i ask where you get it serviced? Had mine since 2016 and can tell it’s dying.

          • +1

@Panama: if you are in Sydney - Bravo Repairs Centre

        • +2

had mine since 2015… Ive changed the seals, fixed the triac board, changed the nylon washer in the steam control and gave it a clean… just have a leak from the steam ball joint but haven't bothered fixing it because it just dripps water into the tray below. and put in an esp32 so I can turn it on and off remotely with my phone! awesome! machine! It took me about 8 years to figure out how to properly set it up

          • +1

@maddoglee: i had the steam issue too - its not just a leak - it actually lowers your pressure - since Ive had it fixed, i can steam milk in less time then espresso extrats - get it fixed is my 2 cents

            • @botchie: Ahhh I might take a look at it, although my steamed milk seems to be coming out silky lately. I found it’s mostly due to technique. But it’s nice to know that the pressure might be affected

              • @maddoglee: yeah, didnt have issue with steaming either but it took a long time - if you cant steam the milk in under 30 secs your pressure is off, and just imagine how good your milk can be!

          • +2

@maddoglee: @maddoglee Haven't heard of anyone adding an esp32 before. Do you have any info/links on how to undertake this mod?

            • @smokey68: Not really. It was my own invention. I only connected the on/off button and the interface is in using Home Assistant. I did it a few years ago. I should document these things. From memory I know I had to use optoisolators (which I harvested from an old microwave) to switch the buttons on and off because of ground loops. Also had to use a regulator to power it. It was fiddly job. I wish I also hooked up the manual button as well so I could auto prime it after it heats up. It’s too much trouble to pull apart to fix. It’s such a dodgy hack but it’s been going strong for about 3 years now. Happy to answer any questions but sorry I hadn’t documented it

      • +1

Hard to say- 10 years including replacing a few o-rings when they leak, replacing whichever 2 parts break first, not leaving it to dry out for months etc. I recommend buying a cheap water filter jug to help soften hard water, rescale every 8-12 months, and cleaning cycle as often as it says

      • +3

I reckon depends on how much effort you want to go to. They're fairly easy to repair so you could get 10+ years out of it.

I've had mine for 8 years now with a few coffees a day. Stuff has broken on it (nothing major) and I've weighed up getting a new one but given the price of a new one I've ended up just self repairing. Plenty of videos on YouTube on how to replace pretty much any component on them. I don't think I've spent more than about $50 repairing. Although each time I've repaired it's ended up taking longer than expected and becomes a few hour job. 😂

      • +2

Had mine in 2019 for $632. Min 4 coffee a day. Changed boiler's o-rings once, and fixed leaking steam wand once. Descaled 2-3 times.
I use filtered water from Brita jug.
        Touch wood, still running normal.

        • +1

I think I got mine for the same price around the same time, binglee sale + eBay 20%?

Had some odd glitches happen but so far no issues with approx 2 shots + prime and flush every day. I just use the cleaner tablets when required and always Brita jug water.

What are the improvements the op mentions?
Is this compared to the precovid (pre price inc) models or ancient 2016 ones?
Edit: looks like multiple posts cover this below

          • @fusion17: Got mine from TGG. Yes, 20% off from eBay :-)
I think it's the best price ever

      • +1

Mine is a 2012 model that’s done about 10,000 shots. No major repairs needed.

    • Mine is 9-10 years old. Had to replace the solenoid once myself about halfway through. Still going strong.

    • Sold mine after 3 years for an upgrade. It was great though and $300 was maybe too cheap 😂

    • 10 years almost for my BES920 in black sesame! would be over 7000 coffees and milk (rough estimate)…. I have replaced one steam tap, 2 sets of tank orings… that's it… not serviced otherwise. I keep the unit really clean, don't run a tank filter, mains pressure filtered water only, rarely use any tablets or chemicals. Machine is pristine inside and out. Run a backflush valve clean 3 times a year with the disc. I have another black Bes920 in storage (NIB), I don't know that I'm ever going to need it! On the whole, I love these machines. I have serviced / rebuilt many peoples machines and understand they can sometimes have issues, sometimes from neglect, and definitely abuse, but sometimes they fail / just take a few parts to get bedded in… if you are unlucky with your orig purchase

  • +8

You had me at secret code

  • Have used this machine for years (we had one, then bought another maybe 1.5-2 years ago when the old one was cooked and not worth the repair - probably our own fault); great machine. I think we got ours less than $1000 at the time; but yeah times have changed, definitely recommend this machine.

    • +1

How does it compares to Sunbeam equivalent EMM7200?

      • Reading the reviews of each tells you all you need to know.

      • +1

Sorry late response; I've not tried any other machine so can not compare. Been super stoked with this and have no need to try another.

  • +5

Those with the amex deal of spend $500 get $50 back from Breville can get this for $1029.20

  • +5

There’s also an Amex offer with Breville (spend $500 get $50 back)

  • Anyone having card issues?

    • I actually did… not sure what the issue was but I got around it by paying with Klarna

  • -1

    Doesnt have grinder?

    • +21

      You can just download it.

      • +3

        underrated comment.

    • -1

The grinder in the dynamic duo is pretty bad and not worth buying. There's plenty of good cheap grinders if you need one.

    • Built in grinders always suck ass anyway, I hate that my Oracle has one I never use.

  • Is a separate coffee grinder required to use this machine?

    • +9

Yes it is and you'll always find that to be the case with higher end machines. It's very very important to have a high quality grinder for good espresso. I would recommend a DF64 Gen 2 as a good value proposition

      • Thanks for the recommendation. Not cheap though is it.

        • +2

Yeah can be an expensive hobby. But the general rule people say is you want to allocate similar amounts of money for the coffee machine itself and the grinder (because they are equally important components to good espresso)

          • +2

@bumluffa: Grinder is more important imo :’)

  • +3

Buy extended warranty, these die just outside warranty, they are cheaply made vs the same model from 10 years ago

I’ve owned both and my first lasted a decade, second 2 years 4 months. Cheaper build, more plastics etc. lots of owners with similar issues to me.

    Breville support is terrible 😞

    • +11

Interesting, the newer models are built better so my Breville repair agent tells me due to a change of where the triac board sits.

My two year warranty is up in December so I dropped my machine off last week to a service agent for a pre-warranty inspection/service. Only issue is the current wait time of 5 weeks before I get it back.

      • +1

They also have compression fittings rather than o rings now.

I was very surprised to see as this is the kind of internals I saw on my lelit mara x, who is owned by breville now.

I can wholeheartly recommend breville dual boiler and tbh, as long as you are willing to do preventive maintence and not use shitty water, it will last you a long time before any of the main componenets fail.

      • +1

wow 5 weeks! by the way is this pre-warranty inspection/service free?

        • Would like to know too. Did your ask for an inspection as the warranty was due to expire? Or did you have issues that you wanted seen to?

        • +2

It will cost me $50 for the inspection if they find nothing wrong, if they do find something which needs to be fixed/replaced and it is covered under warranty it will turn into a warranty job and I won't have to pay at all.

It is purely my choice to have the machine inspected, I have also asked for the machine to be serviced replacing anything within reason to ensure the longevity of the machine so there might be more out of pocket expense over the initial $50 inspection fee.

    • +3

They changed quite a few of the internal fittings around 2020 / 2021 to stop the internal leaks they used to get.

    • +3

Funny, mine died 3 weeks out of warranty

    • I agree with this, had two failures of my Oracle within 2 years, extended warranty definitely worth on these. But also make sure you look after it and only use filtered water etc.

  • +5

    Great machine

Suggest the DF64 or DF54 to go with it.

New units have upgraded O rings. Try to use Rpavlis or filtered water to extend its life.

Most have problems only due to scaling/de-scaling

    • +3

I think I read somewhere that you can't / aren't supposed to descale the dual boiler?

      • the screen certainly pops up a reminder after a period of time, depending on what hardness water you told it you had.

An old firmware descale cycle had a glitch that would start heating a boiler with no water in it and stuff it. I'm not sure what firmware I have so I just manually drain and descale the boilers, then reset the error count to clear the on-screen descale reminder.

        • -2

That reminder on the screen is for a clean, not a descale. Very different processes.

          • @bAps: I've been cleaning as required by the pop up.
I've also been waiting for the descalr pop up to appear, but never seen it. Should I be doing it manually?
            Probably 3yo unit now

          • +4

@bAps: Theres also a descale warning/reminder its just a very long time.

          • +3

@bAps: There are both "clean me" and "descale!" warnings

            • +1

@harro112: Yep. I've had descale messages over the years. I thought I killed my machine last time I descaled as it wouldn't turn back on / heat up. Turns out a air bubble had formed in the line which stuffed up the sensors. Eventually got it sorted but took like a week of stuffing around.

      • +4

Correct. Causes more problems than it solves.

      • +1

If you use the right kind of water you won't ever need to descale it and totally avoid that problem

        • any recommendations for bottled water? Last I checked, Woolworths Spring or Pureau seemed to be the go, unless going down the path of undersink installs…

          • +1

@pyrate: I use pureau and make up Pavlis water using Potassium Bicarbonate (get it from a brewer's supply place). I make up about 4 litres in plastic bottles and keep them in the fridge. Lasts me about a week with 2 double shots per day (I also use it for backflushing, and do a 25 sec shot befor and after each shot).

          • @pyrate: You can use purea but make sure you add potassium bicarbonate.

I add 1gram of potassium bicarbonate to a 10 litre box of purea.

Pure distilled water will also strip your machine internals

      • They original bes900 couldn't be descaled by the end user, the 920 added that functionality

  • +1

I still have the original model from 10 years ago. I've had to replace the standard O rings and the pump. Brilliant machine for the money.

  • My Dynamic Duo from the previous Costco deal lasted two weeks. I've taken the plunge on this offer although my refund isn't yet confirmed.

    • I bought that too and considering taking it back and spending the extra on a better grinder… did they have any issues with the return?

      • I'm still working on the return. Breville were quick and easy and offered a full refund, but sent me back to Costco who have been slower.

        • Was it change of mind or was there an issue with the machine?

          • @bradenpd: The machine no longer pumps any water. The steamer still works. I also have the runaway temperature issue if left plugged in but turned off.

            • @swoopalicious: Oh bugger! I’m just trying to save a couple of hundy… might not be worth the hassle.

      • +1

The grinder has been fine for me, but I had to reduce the inner burr from 6 to 4 for the beans I have.

  • I assume the discount code was intended for a limited group (RACV members).
Does Breville check if eligible to use the code in any way?

    • +5

Who cares, if it works it works.
What are they going to do, ask for money back in a month's time if they check?

      • -3

        … I'm nervous they will cancel orders…

        • +6

If they cancel, you just get your money back and there's no foul. I'm not seeing the issue here

  • I got the email tracking the MyAmexShop but not sure it’ll come through with the secret code.

  • Good Price

  • +2

Stacked with the Amex $50 back after $500 spend offer.

    • I'm more and more inclined to get an Amex now.. Could have used about 3 of these 50 back 500 deals this year.

      • +2

I ended up buying a $500 GC and paid $579 to attempt the double dip on the $50. It makes cash back ineligible, however so does this code so I picked the extra $50 over a possible cash back.

        $979.20 is decent.

        • +1

Thanks for the tip! I didn't know breville had gift cards.

        • You lost any extended warranty you card offers by buying the gift card.

          • @spaceflight: Possibly, however paying for the full amount on your card with $500 & $579 to Breville on the same day offers a reasonably good chance of a positive outcome.

  • +4

Code also works with Bambino and Bambino Plus, bringing them down to $319.20 and $399.20 respectively.

    • +1

      Beat me to it

    • +1

      Legend!

I’d love the Dual but don’t realistically have the counter space for this plus grinder.

So have been umming and Rring over Bambino or the +.
Have a flatmate who wouldn’t know the milk so auto would be good for her. But the bambino was so much cheaper.

This just made the Bambino+ a no brainer. 😄

    • Bambino Plus or this if I'm planning to use a separate manual grinder? Should do some research.

      • I bought the Bambino to replace the my last Dual Boiler.

It feels cheap and flimsy. I just can't get the coffee dialled in. Giving it away to buy this again

  • Thanks op ordered!!

  • I have a broken machine that is not cost effective due the price of parts which is a real shame, otherwise was a great machine.

When it died I bought a Profitec Pro 500 which has been fantastic.

    • +1

      You must be rich lol

    • Costs more than my first car haha

  • +2

Inflation and rise in cost of living mean you will never find one at $900 or lower again?

    • +1

I will personally hold on a few days.

    • The price is still really good for what you get. Over seas, the prices are even higher.

    • Paid $725 July 2022, I think that's the best post-pandemic price so far.

  • +1

What's a good coffee grinder? Just bought the dual

    • +5

DF54 is a good budget option, all depends on your budget
