Black Friday Sales – TV suggestions

I've been out of the loop on TVs. Our 55" Panasonic Viera died a few years ago. So what should I get to replace it?

Happy to go up to 75" and spend up to $1800. Just don't know about new TVs as the colours don't look as real/good as plasma, but maybe with new technology they do?

How are the LG LED smart TVs? Harvey Norman have them on Black Friday sale at $1828 : LG 75-inch QNED86 4K UHD LED Smart TV, or LG 65-inch UT8050 4K UHD LED Smart TV for $984

Samsung 75inch Q70D QLED 4K Smart TV for $1883

Is OLED or mini LED worth considering?

Any advice / suggestions appreciated

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2024

If you like t\he picture quality of plasma, as do I, check out OLEDs.

Not sure of the current price of a 75" OLED but your 55" Panasonic Viera was not cheap back in the day either.

I went from Plasma > OLED.

    • Thanks for the advice. Yeah, the 55 Viera wasn’t cheap and died only 2-3 years in, was really bummed considering it was made in Japan (not Thailand)

I’m also considering a short throw projector as another option. At the cheaper end, like the Hisense PL1H Laser Cinema 4K Ultra Short Throw Smart Projector

Unless you only watch at night or in a darken room, then forget about the projector. You’re better off buying the largest cheapest LED you can find at your budget.

I also had a Panasonic Plasma die within 2-3 years, Panasonic gave a decent credit towards a new TV (as new TVs came down in price). Replacement Plasma is still working to this day.

  • good choice get 75 and whatever your wallet can afford go with (samsung sony hisense) first and then others

You put Hisense in the same category as Sony but omit LG?
(let me guess - you have a Hisense?)

      My summary of TV land:
I'd give Hisense (or some TCL) the best bang for buck tick in many cases - but then great deals come up at Black Friday so it's worth checking: 1. Sony; 2. Samsung, 3. LG, 4. Hisense, and 5. TCL for bang for buck on specs / price IMHO.

All the re-purposed old brands such as Blaupunkt, JVC, Akai as well as the cheaper TVs the likes of EKO, DGTech and FFalcon can FF…. umm, let's just assume you get what you pay for! I can't speak for all of them first hand, but have tried a couple - fortunately when I last went for one of these price category of TV it died at 11 months rather than holding off the extra few days to be past 12 to make the refund easier… and I've finally learnt my lesson.

And the likes of Kogan and Bauhn have a particular value market segment that's not what I am chasing anymore (but I understand why people go there, and each to their own).

  • Very happy with my 2017 LG Oled 55. Picture quality remains excellent compared to a 2017 Samsung Qled nearby. Even the sound from the TV is acceptable - not that I use that - I do run external audio.

  • Thanks for all the replies all.

Looks like I need to be looking at the OLED tv’s. Might go up to 65” on the LG C4 at $2848. Is that a good price on the 55 or 65?

Is now the time to pull the trigger with Black Friday sales or wait till Xmas or after Xmas for deals?

  • TCL c855 75".

If you can score it for $1800 on BF, then that's the tv you should buy, no question.

  • I'm looking at the TCL 65C745. It's $1171 at JB Hifi and Harvey Norman, are these already Black Friday prices? Should I buy now or hold off?

  • I have been heard that the LG is better than the TCL, so might be looking at an OLED LG instead, smaller size, as 77" is out of my budget

  • It’s done. Went in-store and bought a 65” OLED G4 with 4% off JB gift cards. $3,334.62. Got it over the Sony 65 OLED. More than I wanted to spend, but it’s a good compromise I think

    • Nice I have a 77C1 wallmounted and would have loved to get the G series, atleast you still have a couple weeks price guarantee if it does drop !

      • Is that a price drop guarantee with JB Hifi?

I think we got an extra 1.5 years warranty with JB +
        Manufacturers 1 year = 2.5 Yrs

        • Yes they have a price guarantee of a couple weeks up to a month if you get lucky on the manager. ACL rights would give you atleast 5 years expected life out of a high end TV
