Etihad are offering a free 6 month status matches to members of seven airline loyalty programs including Virgin Australia:

Emirates Skywards (EK), Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer (SQ), Qatar Airways Privilege Club (QR), Virgin Australia Velocity (VA), Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles (TK), British Airways Executive Club (BA), and Air India Flying Returns (AI)

Appears to be Silver and Gold only. Excludes Platinum.

To extend this status for a further 12 months, members need to complete one return flight with Etihad.

Submit a request via the Etihad website.

  They appear to charge a $US49 Status Match Application Fee. I couldn't see a free Status Match option.

    This time, there’s no application fee for the Gold status match … There is a small fee that only applies if you’re matching from Silver status according to AustralianFrequentFlyer.

  Less interested in the Etihad status than I am in what other airlines might match my matched Etihad status. Would be interesting if we could turn VA status into oneworld status for Qantas benefits!

    Agreed, Etihad status on its own is probably not really very useful unless you fly with Etihad. However it may be possible to use this to get something else in the next six months.

  Gold status with Etihad doesn't sound very useful. Looks like you don't even get lounge access unless you get some extra points - or am I wrong?
