Nothing Phone (2a) 5G 8GB/128GB $426, 12GB/256GB $496 + Del (C&C/ in-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

450

I was having a bit of a chinwag with Miss JB and here's some good prices on the Nothing Phone from the upcoming Black Friday sale catalogue at an all time low price.

These phones are good value as they offer high performance with an impressive AMOLED display, cameras that hold up well in reviews (for the price), a large battery and the customisable LED lights on the back that Nothing are known for are good for notifications. It makes me miss the colour notification LED found on the Nexus 5 back in the day.

Specifications:

  • Android 14 (guaranteed 3 major Android upgrades)

  • how is this compared to my S10e .. ?

    • +19

      This is nothing.

    • +2

Definitely an upgrade in performance and updates. You'll lose the microSD slot, less water resistance and no wireless charging.

      • Nothing mentions about eSim?

        • S10e doesnt have eSim anyways

    • Love the compactness of the s10e but the battery sucked so bad and probably not getting any updates. This is a great upgrade for sure.

But if you like to keep your phones for a long time, it's probably just worth it staying with Samsung. The S24 series or even the zflip6 are great choices for good performance, great cameras, display and battery life, compactness, and long term support.

      • I am in same situation. Happy with my S10e. Don't see any need to change phone but battery sucks. Will it help to change battery?

  • How are the battery life on these?

    • +3

I have it only charge to 80% but can get 24 hours out of it.

      • That doesnt tell me much. What is your average screen time per day?

        • Between 4-5 hours.

    • It's pretty good but nothing groundbreaking

      • Thanks for both yall reply. I'm trying to help a friend find a new phone and he's concerned about battery life and I told him it'll just depend on how he uses the phone

        • My brother has this phone and battery life is very impressive. Overall it's a solid phone except in the camera department which is expected since it's not a flagship phone.

    • Nothing

  • are these rootable?

    • Yes

i mean carefull application of lubricant anything is no?

      • +1

        And patience 😅

  • Is there somewhere online we can read the catalogue before tomorrow?

  • the 499 s22 deal makes more sense for the price

the camera sensor on these are very janky in low light

This or the Pixel 8a/8… Apart from better camera and longer OS update support, any other areas that Pixel does better?

I posted this a few months back, still relevant..

I've had this phone (in white as well) for 2 weeks (5 months now), did that JBHIFI $50 3G phone credit trade in thing, got it for $479…

    Pros
    - Excellent screen (120Hz OLED, 6.7" and 1200+ nits)
    - Haptics and build quality are nice (design subjective)
    - Glyphs on the back actually useful for notifications
    - Battery life is actually insane, overnight I will lose 1% in 9-10 hours, it's a 2-day phone for me with 6-8 hours screen on time
    - Camera is probably iPhone 12 good.. video is great and very stable, night video is impressive too!
    - Software is the best part of this phone for me, already had 3 updates in 2 weeks… my old Xiaomi had 3 updates in 9 months lol
    - Symmetrical bezels
    - 4 years of updates from Google/Nothing
    - Don't be fooled by MediaTek, its not 2019 anymore, this is an incredibly efficient chip with a 750K antutu score.

    CONS
    - Camera is good, but it's not a flagship, it is a $500 phone though
    - Glyphs can feel gimmicky after a while
    - No charger in the box
    - Get a case, this thing is 100% plastic and will scratch
    - It's huge/wide phone, may be uncomfortable to hold for some.

Just my 2c… 9/10 for me given its price.

EDIT: Since I posted this comment 4 months ago, the updates are something phenomenal. They listen in the forums and update things people want. 10/10 support.

    • Can you expand on "huge/wide phone"?

Are you holding it in landscape? Dimensions all seem pretty standard.

biggest con for me is no eSIM, basically a dealbreaker sadly. keen to get into the nothing ecosystem but they haven't quite hit the right feature set for me yet

    • You mentioned 4 years of updates, does that mean 3 OS upgrades and 4 years of security updates, or is yours a typo and it's 3 OS upgrades like the OP mentioned?

      • +1

I double checked. 3 years of Major updates and 4 years of security updates.

        • Cheers, can you add that to the post?

  • +2

Extremely tempting price, but I couldn't buy a phone without E-Sim Support, it makes travel so much easier to the point where it is one of those features that is a dealbreaker.

I'm using a phone without esim support but got around it with a 5ber esim adapter in the second Sim slot.
You use the 5ber app to load Sims onto it..

Works great. About to go overseas again in 2 weeks. Will be using 3 different esims in that time

      • +2

I didn't even know that was a thing! Great to know there is an alternative now!

How will this phone be performance wise against the S21 5G?

    • Nothing really..

  • +2

I bought one of these earlier this year after washing machining my S22 Ultra and the Nothing definitely felt faster than the S22U. I ended up jumping on a Pixel 9 deal when it released a few months ago out of FOMO on the great deals.

Both the design of the UI and its fluidity are superior to Google's take on AOSP on the Pixel 9 and the Nothing also has far superior battery life.

Would buy again in a heartbeat.

No esim is a bummer though.

    • Yeah, if an esim is a priority, either Moto G85 or Samsung A55 (the latter if you need more years of updates) would be my picks.

    • How is the camera compare to pixel ?

  • Anyone had experience with this in China using a local chinese sim card?

Parents have a local chinese sim which I'm looking for a dual sim android phone so Dad can use his secondary amaysim service without having to physically swap sims. The 4yrs of updates is also important… we noticed my parents having issues with their phones for roaming when updates on their phones ceased.

    • Decided to try answering my own question…

On paper at least, it looks like the Nothing Phone 2A supports all the bands used by China Unicom (dad's Chinese sim provider…

      https://www.kimovil.com/en/frequency-checker/CN/nothing-phon…

Of course, what's on paper is one thing… actual world performance is another matter altogether.

So, will it work on all 3 Telcos?

  • This nothing should count for something.

    • Will require a rebranding to Something Phone then.

      • Something Something

        Looks like Uncle roger branding.
OR an off brand phone from Stephen He

  • I have noting 💔

  • I have this. Amazing phone. Great battery (I charge only 80% per day)

  • How about their os updates plan.

Edit: saw that in the description

  • Can we try them in store? JB put them demo units on?
Any sale on nothing 2 not 2a?

    • My local JB has both the 2 and 2(a) on demo

  • Where did you get the Black Friday catalogue?
