Citi PayAll Program to Be Shut down

Just spoke with a Citibank representative about my PayAll payment.

The representative informed me that in the next month or two, Citi will be writing to all cardholders to inform them of the closure of the PayAll program. Apparently this is a business decision that will impact all cardholders in Australia who are using PayAll.

Just wanted to inform the community, as I am sure there are many Citi cardholders here who utilise the feature (especially those set up on a 0% fee payment) and get a lot of value out of it. Don't think there is any alternative. It was a good run while it lasted!

We want to let you know we will no longer offer Citi PayAll on Citi Credit Cards effective 20 January 2025.
As a result, Citi PayAll payments with a due date of 20 January 2025 and onwards will not be processed.

        • How do you pay money into your own account either b2bpay?

          • -1

@digitalane: Tried that and it failed coz of some BS regulations..

  • +8

Managed to get pro rated refund of annual fee. Simply called customer service and asked to cancel card due to change in t&cs relating to payall.

    Hope this helps.

    • Did you specifically ask for the pro rated refund or just mentioning the changes in t&cs was enough for them to do the refund automatically for you? Just wondering if they did it promptly when asked or needed to “escalate to the manager” or something before reluctantly doing it.

      • +1

I asked for the refund. Based on my reason, they provided it quite promptly. My wife had the same experience when requesting refund.

        • Thanks, it’s great to know!

        • How many months into the new year were you?

          • +1

            @Nat000: 3 months

            • +1

              @infinity03: Ok, cool. Thanks
I'll probably keep mine maximum 2 months after, mine just clicked into the new year last week.
I want to get at least 2 more payalls, and I've got the opportunity to use priority pass in about 3 locations at Christmas

      • can confirm that they will pro Rata the fees based the the days you kept your card open after annual fees is charged. (wanted to cancel the CSO said will charge 10 days of fees as i am 10 days after the fee charged) So decided not to cancel yet, will let it run till end of December to get one more payall.

    • why didnt u ask for the full refund instead and why pro rated refund?

      • I asked for a full refund initially. They said given you have used the card for 3 months, we can only provide a pro-rated refund. I didn't push the matter further,

        • did u spend some good amount on citibank card ? I know for premier card if u spend some amount, u get 50% discount
I had closed my prestige card on the last day before annual fees got. I had used it for 1 year and got the bonus points.
now thinking if I could have got some discount or full waiver?

u could have been adamant and said I want full refund. I mean u are an ozbargainer like me :p

  • +1

has anyone managed to get full refund of annual fees of prestige card?
I know with premier card if u spend more than $10-20k u get 50% annual fee discount

I feel like they've been very cheeky with reminders lately - they send them on a Friday evening, and I BPAY to the account so there is enough funds but they process on the Monday before the BPAY funds have arrived so it declines

This started happening a few months ago, used to get a lot more notice.

When both citibank debit and credit were in the same place I could transfer instantly but they split these, forcing BPAY and then don't allow enough time

Ruining the last chance to get points

    • +1

Yep agreed happened to me too this month. They normally process payments 3 days before they're due (with flexibility around weekends/holidays etc. in line with normal Citibank policy that weekends don't exist). Even allowing for that, this month they decided to process my payments 4 days in advance with of course no warning. I suffered the same problem as you in that BPay is a 24hr thing and doesn't work with the speed necessary to rescue the situation and there's no other way to credit the card instantly now that there's no direct linked transaction account. Citibank also won't provide a direct unique PayID e-mail address to directly pay the credit card instantly like Amex can do. TBH Citibank are starting to make the hoops around paying the card off to take advantage of PayAll so difficult and convoluted, that it's probably better they're just ending it.

      • just advance pay it, its hard as its no payid and have to depend on Bpay.
setup again the payall for this month

        • +1

If you setup again you pay the fee though?

      • +1

I always now look at my statements for the due date with comparison to the payall date, now that I've learnt my lesson.

Direct debits take 3 business days to process, so it won't come out of your account until the due date but will sit in limbo for 3 business days afterwards. So essentially you can can still save/earn interest (depending if offset/savings account) right up until the due date even if it's a Monday and if it's a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday your account won't be direct debited until the following business day. However payall also comes off your citi account 3 business days beforehand, so if there are less than 6 business days between those dates (inclusive) I deactivate my direct debit and pay the day before it's due. In my experience bpay will clear on the next business day as long as you initiated it on a business day before 4pm.

      • Me 3.

        Payall for Wed the 11th.
I sent funds on Saturday 7th. Normally processed on the night of the 9th.

Got a rejection sms first thing in the morning of the 9th. Never had that.

Had a look, and my funds were in the account (might have come later on the 9th, but they were there).

Any ideas how to get the funds out?

Don't want my account in credit for a month

        • Ask them to reverse the transaction back. Have done the few times via web chat. No fee.

          • @timhn: Cheers.

They said to redo the Payall and they will waive the fees. Better result I think..

But I guess I need to make the Payall at least a week from now.

  • I just got the Citi Prestige with a minimum spend of $7,500 for 150,000 Bonus Qantas Points. Does anyone know if I can still use Citi PayAll (before it shuts down) to count toward the minumum spend? Seeing conflicting informaiton about this.

    • Give them a call and ask - only way to know for sure

When is the last day I can set up a new Citi PayAll payment?

The last day that you can set up a new Citi PayAll payment is 9 January 2025. You will need to ensure that the Citi PayAll payment due date is on or before 19 January 2025. Any Citi PayAll payments with a payment due date on or after 20 January 2025 will not be processed.

The second bullet point “• any Citi PayAll Payments,” is deleted from this definition.
    • Thanks, I read that too but when I called to double check, two different CS said Citi PayAll won't count toward the minumum spend, even from now.

      • Well from my point of view the documentation is clear.

In any case I received my card and activated around ~19 Dec and promptly set up a PayAll. It was scheduled for 31 Dec but somehow it got processed yesterday 27 Dec. Just got an email with my monthly statement and stomach dropped because I would have to wait another month to see if PayAll would earn bonus points. Opened it to see the PayAll went through and 260,000 bonus points. So to confirm PayAll still counts as an eligible transaction, as per the current T&Cs.

  • If my recurring payall is on Jan 26th, am I able to alter the date to Jan 18th without paying any kind of fee for that transaction?

    • Too late now, Mate

    • +2

I’m in same boat. You could change it but then pay the fee so not worth it. December will be my last so pay that back on statement due date in Jan and then close account before the next years fee kicks in

  • Thoight so. Thanks

  • Does anyone know if tipping an uber driver is added as one charge to the Citi credit card when booking a ride? I’ve got a trip to the airport later this month and from where I’m based using uber premium will only cost $84. Hoping to increase this to above $100 to qualify for the cashback. Or can I just ask the driver to take a longer route so $100 is charged?

    • +3

I added a tip as soon as my trip ended and I was able to get my $100 rebate.

At first it will show as 2 pending charges, but after a couple of days it was merged into 1. It did take me about 8 weeks to get the money back and according to the T&Cs, your card needs to be open.

Also, I also got the $10 rebate for spending over $40 in a month, so profit? 🤑

      • Could I just clarify with you - this month, I'll be spending the $100 uber cashback for the first time this year. If I go on a trip that's over $100, will I qualify for both $100 cashback as well as the monthly $10 rebate (for going over $40)? I am finding the monthly $10 rebate more slower and slower to come into my account lately - often going into the following month. Did you get your $100 cashback and the monthly $10 rebate at the same time? Thanks in advanced!

        • I don't remember the dates exactly but I got the $10 pretty quickly and the $100 took a while… It was not together

    • I had read comments that it would combine but when I tried it it didn't. To be safe best to add an extra stop to get the charge over $100

  • +1

Haha that’s awesome! Thanks for sharing mate, shattered payall is over but I guess there’s still some benefits left to take advantage off. I doubt we’ll ever have a credit card with as good benefits as this again..

    • It's been an epic card since the Signature era. I wouldn't know about it without ozb.
Still curious though if it's true that some people managed to get it upgraded to Prestige for free.

      • There were never any free upgrades to Prestige. Some people claimed they got free upgrades, but they were lying to make others feel jealous or like they'd missed out on something. The Prestige was never included in the Family & Friends offer of the time, not even informally. I was one of the ones who tried to get an upgrade by talking to them through back channels and pleading (this was before I realised I didn't even want it at all because it was a 44-day interest free card as opposed to the 55-day of the Platinum/Signature). Even with an income that easily met the criteria at the time for a Prestige upgrade, they were not giving one out as a free upgrade, so all the rumours you've heard about free upgrades were lies.

I have just gotten my card and activated it today
This is my first credit card. Seeing that citipay all ends soon.

Will it affect my credit score if i cancel it without using it?

    • That ship has sailed.

    • Yes. Your credit rating hits will come from the application. You've done that, taken the hit and it's now in the past. There's nothing you can do now to undo the damage to your credit rating. Unless you're able to unscramble an egg, your credit score is what it is right now whether you use the card you've got or don't.

  • Question, if I cancel the my prestige card, what happens to my rewards points?

Only asking since aiming to transfer KrisFlyer but they have a 3yr expiry.

    • +1

Transfer your points out of citi before you cancel the card.

  • Hmmm I'm in the same boat with my January payall date falling just outside the cut off. So I'm considering paying off my December payall early then setting up a new one with a payment fee of $190 ($20k * 0.95%) on the start of my January statement, which falls on the 1st of the month. I can then stick it in my offset account for the maximum 45 interest free days. With the interest I'm saving removed from the $190 payment fee, it would essentially work out to $42 for 20k points ($190 - $20k * 6% / 365 * 45).

Now the question remains if I set up the payall on Jan 1, citi will deduct the 20k from my card 3 business days beforehand. Will this payment then count on the deduction date or the scheduled payment date? If on the deduction date, that would count towards December's statement and I would need to change the payment date to Jan 6 (3 business days after Jan 1) and thereby eating into the interest free days I would save on my offset… Anyone know or have experience in this?

    • +3

Geez that's a helluva lot of work and risk of something going wrong, just to pay $42 for $100 worth of points. Nett total profit being $58. I wouldn't go to that much effort for $58, but good luck to you if you wanna risk it. Just be aware that if any one tiny thing goes wrong or isn't processed on the day you estimate it will be (because Citibank are so reliable and trustworthy), you risk being underwater by a helluva lot more than $58!

On a simple risk vs reward measure, this makes no sense whatsoever moving $20,000 around just to 'make' $58 once. But good luck to you if you have the time and risk appetite for it.

      • Well as it turns out I made an omission in my calculation. I forgot to include the money that I would be losing/not saving by paying off the December balance early. So when that is factored in, I would be just about breaking even, rendering the whole thing pointless. Even if the scheduled payment date of the 1st was counted towards January's statement.

So it looks like this coming payall date in December is the last for me as well. C'est la vie. It was good while it lasted.

        • -1

Yep I'm not surprised. Banks have the funds to pay very hansomely for very clever, very well qualified actuaries to work for them who work out in advance every possible permutation to ensure that whatever schemes they come up with, when gamed to the absolute hilt by even the most dedicated of amateur OzBargainers, will at the end of the day only ever come out as break-even for the bank as the very worst possible outcome.

As dedicated as an OzBargainer can ever be, we are only amateurs at the end of the day. We can game something well beyond what any normal person with a normal life woud do with their free time, but we're not professional actuaries getting paid to work on behalf of the bank or financial institution to ensure they always come out on top. If what you had thought was going to work for you had actually worked to your nett overall advantage, then that loophole you found would be akin to beating a casino - and that never happens.

  • I have a riddle for all you payall gurus:

If a payall is scheduled for 25th December (Wednesday), when is it debited - Monday 23rd or Friday 20th?

    • +1

Wed - 1(Tue) - 2(Mon) - 3(Fri), Sat/Sun don't exist in Citibank-world. Your account will be debited on the 20th the Friday before. That's not absolute guaranteed gospel though because Citibank make up their own rules as they go along depending on which way the wind is blowing, so there's a slim chance they won't action the debit until Monday, but based on the only written rules we have from them to go on, technically it should be Friday 20th.

That said, I had a similar scenario last month happen to me and Citibank ended up actioning the debit on what would be the equivalent of Thursday 19th, which I hadn't counted on them doing since it was the first time in 3.1/2 years they'd gone 4 days early instead of 3, but that's just more Citibank vagueness to try and work around. But working on Friday 20th as the best guess, you'll need to action a BPay to the account to top it up if need be before 4pm AEST on Thursday 19th keeping in mind the time differences that apply to wherever you are as well of course, so for Perth for example, you need to do this before 1pm on Thursday 19th Dec

      • Did you account for 25th being a Public holiday? ^_^

        • +1

No, because that's irrelevent being a day when Citibank were never going to be doing anything anyway, so who cares that it's a public holiday? If any of the days between 25th and 18th were public holidays, then that would matter, but they're not.

          • @Legoman: Ok then, as long as they dont debit on thursday 19th i should be sweet.

            • +1

@powerhead: They might, there are no guarantees, but I think it's very unlikely.

      • +1

Can't you just lodge an AFCA claim and move on.

Ie. I just contacted Citi Bank. Said my Payall as due 11th. Funds landed in my Citi account on the 9th. But got rejected on the 9th (they went early this month).

Called them on the 10th. Kept it simple.

Said either manually do the Payall (as it isnt the 11th yet..the funds are there..but u have rejected it already), or if you can't, just reverse the Bpay into the account and whack the equivalent points onto my balance.

They basically said no. I said no worries. Please upgrade this to a formal complaint and give me a ref number..I will then lodge this with AFCA. They then offered for me to create another Payall and they will waive the fees.

Half tempted to set it re occuring to see what happens..

        • -1

Your AFCA case against Citibank will go nowhere. I realise you probably just used it as an empty threat to try and intimidate the Citibank Philippines call centre worker, but that didn't work either. The Citibank call centre staff you can talk to have no access to the PayAll administration side of the business and they can't reverse, re-process, waive fees, edit existing PayAll payments, or start new ones manually for you from the back-office side. PayAll is a completely separate unit of the banking platform which is why its management is not reflected anywhere on the website. It is solely on the phone app and nowhere else, which is why the call centre staff can't see it.

All the call centre staff could do is credit your account with extra points as compensation to try and placate you from your perceived injustice. If they do that for you, then it's because you're either a large enough spender to make it worthwhile for them, or you're just annoying enough that the call centre worker just wants to get rid of you, or you just caught them on a good mood day. But rest assured it had nothing to do with AFCA or your threats.

          • +1

@Legoman: Agree with all above, except AFCA isn't a threat, it's just "process" these days. I know Matt at AFCA on a first name basis. Had 14 cases this year. All got up.

Problem is citi makes decisions based on the prevailing wind direction and a moving dart board. Not really appropriate for banking.

We think of Payall as a cash cow. But it' actually has utility. Those funds should arrive in x account on x day. The funds were in the account 3 days in advance, Citi failed there part.

            • update. - Citi calling me as I type. No notes on our conversation from yesterday… hahaha. Clerk 2.. I will put notes on your file now that we will waive all fees…nah, tried that, and I'm actually calling you on in right now!

So she gave me authorization to record the conversation that Citi will waive all my Payall fees for future Payall setups. Plus note the time of call and rep. AFCA go back and listen to the calls. They know I cover my @ss / clearly outline the expectation.

So we will redo it, if there's a few..it's off to Matt.

        • Why would you even leave it so close? Although Citi takes it out 3 days before the actual payment date, i have seen it processed a day earlier depending if it's weekend or not so you are taking a risk.

          • +1

@runamuck: Well oiled machine mate to minimise loss of funds from the mortgage.

Been setup for years. Never missed until now.

T&Cs say 3 days in advance. They were in the account 3 days in advance…

Simple as that. Any way, got a resolution.

  • +3

    Their dates don't make sense.

Says any payall with a payment date of 20th or later won't be processed but then says on the 19th they will cancel remaining transfers but they usually send the funds 3 business days before the transfer date (although last month it was 2 days) so transfers dated 20, 21 & 22 would be sent before they are cancelled on the 19th. Let's see how it plays out 😁

  • Citi wouldn't budge on reducing the annual fee when calling up to cancel. Annual fee was due in 5 days so went ahead and cancelled.

  • Could someone please PM best way to do this over the next few weeks until feature ends. I just got a new card and have read quite a few pages so just want to make sure I do correctly. Thank you

    • -2

      no

    • It's too late. You'll have a fee and it negates pretty much any upside

      • even the points?

        • The points you can only get until 20 Jan or whenever that final date was. You could maybe use PayAll to meet your minimum spend though. That would be a good thing to do before PayAll shuts down. You can set up PayAll on the Citi app. It’s been so long that I don’t remember all the specifics. Many of us set up our PayAll payment a long while ago (before Oct ‘23).

          • @bk1973: Thanks for responding, yes saw people had been able to do that as well, might be good to do that.

  • Can you downgrade the card to a no annual fee card while keeping whatever credit limit you had?

    • Probably but why? Their no fee card is pretty basic while there are better no fee cards out there. Bendigo is one.

  • Probably wouldn't get such a high limit with another bank.

  • Has everyone transferred their points out yet?

    • I have close to 250k points and thinking to move them to flybuys

    • I was umming and ahhing about transferring to Velocity (as I had transferred to Krisflyer a couple of months ago, and thought I may do so again) but in the end decided to do so as there's a 10% transfer bonus on with Velocity, and the failure of points transfers on Citi's site a week or so before the said Krisflyer redemption did not instil me with confidence about keeping the points parked.

(You had to have made a transfer in November though to 'activate' the bonus.)

    • Not yet, sitting on a million in both of two accounts. Slowly drip feeding them out to Flybuys as the need for groceries requires. I think a sudden influx of millions of points will be very noticed by Flybuys and cause uncomfortable questions to be asked and accounts to get locked, so best not to invite that.

    • Is 'Pay with points' generally not good value? What is the best conversion option on Citi points? I only see Flybuys mentioned.

      • +1

Can also transfer to other airlines programs like Krisflyer, Velocity.
Otherwise, there are also redeem for gift cards.

      • +1

If you've got a Premier card, there are four main options: gift cards, Flybuys, Velocity points and Krisflyer points.

The worst option is gift cards as they're slightly worse value than converting to groceries (2 points = 1c of Flybuys dollars).

If you want to fly, then you can achieve even better value although where you convert to depends on availability of award flights. For domestic flights, Velocity is a great option, and they also have decent availability on Qatar Airways along with transfer bonuses (and fairly good availability on United and ANA along with Virgin Atlantic and Hawaiian). Otherwise, Krisflyer is better with more business availability on Singapore Airlines and access to the rest of Star Alliance.

    • No rush, will wait for a likely Velocity transfer bonus around May - e.g. May/June 2024, May 2023, May 2022, May 2021.

Hopefully it will be 15% but it may be less.

  • Messaged to ask for a pro rata refund of the annual fee before cancelling the card. Got a long spiel about how the annual fee was valid. Asked for the request to the escalated as the product is no longer the same as it was from several months ago and got told it has been forward to a senior resolutions officer.

    I'm guessing things look hopeful?

    • Keep us updated. If I cancel after my last PayAll's in the first week of Jan, I'll be just over 10 months into the current year. I was hoping I could cancel and get 1 month refunded back, but if not, I'll keep it till mid-Feb and use Priority Pass one last time.

      • +1

Just milk the last priority pass visit and save your mental bandwidth IMO. Some battles are just not worth fighting.

      • So after a whole heap of phone tag and disconnected calls managed to cancel the card and the prorata refund has been confirmed. However they are completely outdated and are sending the refund as a physical cheque in the mail.

  • Just had my last PayAll transaction into the account.

Thank you Citibank, I'll miss this awesome feature dearly.

    • My final two are coming up next week.

No compelling reason for me to keep the Premier after that, so after redeeming the points I'll close it and replace with HSBC Premier World Mastercard: 2 Complimentary Airport Lounge Dragon Passes Every Year, $1=1.5qff 1st Year, $0 Annual Fee @ HSBC.

      • I'm thinking the same but may hold on to it for a while and just drop the credit limit to $10K for now. The travel insurance on this card is quite good plus other perks (PP and cashback on some promotions). Of all 10 years or so keeping this card, I don't see my credit score impact much.

I've also got the HSBC Premier recently. It's a good replacement for the Citibank card if I decided to ditch it later.

        • Unfortautnely I think the minimum credit limit is 20k for prestige. an alternative option is to take up the balance transfer offer for 0% interest for 9 months with 2% BT fee. If you've got an offset account, you'll make profit ~>$500. You can check if this offer is available under offers when you log into Citi on desktop

          • @Crowing: I have the Premier FFL card with $15K credit.

            • @timhn: timhn, I'm in the same boat (FFFL and a $15k limit). I intend to do a Paylite instalment plan on my last Payall, and once that is paid off, drop the limit.

There's no point closing the card now IMO - may as well see what NAB offers as a replacement card.

              • @MELso:

There's no point closing the card now IMO - may as well see what NAB offers as a replacement card.

Yes, I'm thinking the same. Looking back at how NAB had converted/migrated the Citibank’s debit card to similar NAB debit and keeping no fees for fx transactions, I'm hoping they'll do the same for the Premier card.

              • @MELso: How do you paylite? I've tried setting up a "fixed payment option" for either the payall transaction instalment plan or the statement instalment plan and it says either you don't have any eligible transactions or eligible offers for this card. I have the citi prestige card.

                • +1

@shkippy: On the website, go to 'Offers', then 'Credit Card' and there should be a Paylite option offering certain transactions to be paid over either 2 or 3 months in instalments interest and fee-free.

                  • @MELso: Can Paylite be set up at any time before the next statement is issued? Or is it best to do it straight away?

@Weasel: I think it needs to be before the statement is issued.

Once the statement is issued, I found the previous Payall transactions were no longer eligible for Paylite (and got the 'no eligible transactions' error), and looking at my current eligible Paylite transactions, only transactions made since my last statement are showing as eligible.

My last Payall transaction goes through on 14 January, so I'll put $12K through on Paylite on 15 or 16 Jan (given my statement date is ~17 Jan).

                      • @MELso: Yep my statement has already been issued, wish I had of known/thought of this last month. It's all over for me. Thanks citi for your free money, glad I could milk it while I could.

                  • @MELso: @MELso
Good to know it could be 3 months. I’ve only ever seen the 2 months option, but I’m on premier not prestige. It was 0% though and no pesky one-off fees.

          • @UrMumsOnlyFan: Shit, nothing worth to hold on for long time any more except the freebies one like Bendigo or Bankwest.

@UrMumsOnlyFan: This was very predictable. HSBC always was one of the very few banks that was even more untrustworthy and loose with their T&Cs and rules than even Citibank was.
