  • Even cheaper than my fanxiang 4TB.

      And the fikwot?

    • +1

Got the NM790 4tb for the same price few months ago

    • fanxiang has better TBW.

      • Do you trust fanxiang warranty or HP?

      • I just picked up a 4TB Fanxiang (SATA) for $280 😅 TLC with DRAM… should suffice even without the latter for my CCTV setup.

    QLC

Drops to ~20MB/s for sustained writes

    • Is there a review somewhere with that?

      • HP FX700 4 TB Specs @ TechPowerUp

        Controller: MaxioTech MAP1602A Falcon Lite
Flash: Biwin rebranded YMTC Xtacking 3.0 232L QLC

Review on the 2TB version by TechPowerUp

        • 20MB/s?

          • @Clear: Quoting TechPowerUp on the 2TB version:

Once 460 GB have been written, the SLC cache is full and write performance drops a lot—down to around 130 MB/s, which is HDD territory.

4TB version would have a larger pSLC.

The 30MB/s comment, I think was just assumption based on another infamous QLC SSD. That one does drop to 30MB/s and I unfortunately own such SSD (didn't know initially, the SSD maker did a component swap from TLC to QLC). $105 for 2TB PCIe gen 3 x4… I did own the TLC version of the same model SSD ($115)….

            • +1

@netsurfer: You quickly edited that review in. So there we go the 20MB/s comment is false based on reviews of the 2TB. Where's all the commenters about it being loaded with malware in the firmware because Chinese?

              • @Clear: yeah, sorry, I realised you were actually after the QLC write speed… but you replied while I was editing / updating.

QLC drive has write speeds that drop off to hard drive levels on larger files.

Probably ideal for games drive if you dont mind the slower download/update speed and still get near TLC drive loading speeds on a large games library.

    • There seems to be a recent surge in interest from PS5 Pro owners, so this sounds like a great value option for them.

      • It will probably slow down when moving the game from the disk to drive

    • This might work for a cache drive, especially when home networking is still stuck around 1Gbit.

    • +2

The qlc limit is like 460gb - no game is gonna hit that limit.

      • The QLC "limit" is simply how much data can be immediately stored in NOT the SSD. So, either a DRAM cache (does this drive have one? I'm assuming not at this price point) or HMB allowing access to your computers ram.

I don't know where you got that figure from but it doesn't seem right.

        • That's the SLC cache size.

          • @Dsiee: This drive has a SLC cache?

            • @allewell: The cells are shared. The "slc cache" is the same cell as the qlc, but writing 1 bit per cell instead of 4. It will then repackage that data 4:1 when "idle".
The drop in speed happens when there's not enough free space on the drive so it needs to do this packing to make room. As you fill up the drive, the cache becomea smaller and smaller on these "pseudo slc" drives, until there is no cache at all.

              • @jkim: Interesting and clever, thanks for explaining

I have one 2TB version of this. Unfortunately, it's QLC

At this price, spend the extra $80 on the Kingston KC3000

This drive is YMTC 232L QLC which should never be more expensive than the TLC Lexar NM790

The only scenario where QLC makes sense are for 8TB NVMe drives, including the one that Chris @ Lexar recently alluded to

    • +1

I'm planning on getting a 2tb for an O/S drive and a 4tb for games.
Would the Kingston be good for the o/s and this for the game drive?

      • OS = get the SN580 2TB for $149

Make sure to update the firmware before using the drive

Games = wait for BF deals, the Kingston is best for PS5 gaming because of the DRAM and is overkill as a PC game drive

        • +3

Why the lower speed/feature drive for a boot/os drive over the kc3000? (Really interested, I have no idea. Am considering grabbing a 2TB KC3000 as my only drive)

        • Slightly unrelated, but what if you didn't update the firmware before using the drive?

I bought my Kingston KC3000 back in 2022. There was no available firmware and the bug hadn't been identified/fixed at the time. I have since updated the firmware, but will there be lingering issues with the controller?

          • @Riceplate: That's fine, there shouldn't be any lingering issue.

            Firmware Rev. EIFK31.7 (07-08-2024)
            • Improved decoding flow to prevent excessive latency found on certain platforms

That fixes slow random read issue and since random read issue is noticeable, it is best to do the firmware upgrade right away for new KC3000 owners. Existing owners should update firmware too.

  • We need a good deal on a 4TB DRAM + TLC SSD (triple level cell tender loving care)

  • ring me up with nm790 is on sale again at 299 but for the time being esp with nm790 being scare in stock everywhere im not betting on it

Given that, this is a good deal considering anything else at this price weve seen recently are only worse and no im not trusting fikwot even if this hp have a low tbw and qlc and dramless and all that.

    • Since many OZBers got NM790 4TB for $255 last year, shouldn't bargain hunters wait for $255 or lower?

      Lexar NM790 SSD: 4TB $255 Delivered @ BPC Tech

And, yes, I know technically, the cheapest 4TB NM790 deal posted was the $225 + delivery @ mwave, but Lexar ANZ rep was not happy about that deal so… probably not going to happen any time soon (and that was a clearance sale). However, if you really think about it, it was possible to sell NM790 4TB for $225 last year. When I teased the Lexar ANZ rep for an explanation, I was told the retailers do need a margin (which is fair, since they need to pay rent and various expenses).

      • Arent ssds on an upward trend ever since that 'oversupply' ran out? I would love to wait but I dont see how realistically we are going to come close to that anytime soon, man, the 299$ 790 deal sold like hotcakes as well so i mean even that i would be more than content with
