[Used] Dell UltraSharp U3419W 34" UWQHD IPS 60Hz Curved Monitor (No Stand) 3-Month Warranty $199 + Del / $0 MEL C&C @ BPC Tech

1420

Ridiculous value for a monitor with these specs, even with no stand and shipping costs - paid $38 for StarTrack to Brisbane area, so $237 total, ordered Sunday arrived today.

Should go without saying it's not an ideal monitor for gaming, but honestly it would be plenty enjoyable for many titles imo (just not competitive shooters etc).

The screen was well packed and works perfectly, has a great picture and there were no scratches or dead pixels on my unit.

Specs:

Size & Resolution: 34-inch, UltraWide, 3440 x 1440 (WQHD)
Aspect Ratio: 21:9
Panel Type: IPS
Colour Coverage: 99% sRGB
Brightness: 300 cd/m²
Ports: USB-C (with power delivery up to 90W), HDMI, DisplayPort, USB 3.0, audio out
Refresh Rate: 60Hz
Features: Built-in KVM switch, Picture-by-Picture, Picture-in-Picture
Weight: 8.2kg without stand

Pros:

  • good bit newer than popular U3415W from recent deals
  • decent brightness at 300 cd/m²
  • USB-C with solid power delivery at 90W
  • USB hub and KVM switch
  • excellent overall value

Cons:

  • 60Hz peasantry
  • useless "fast" overdrive mode (visible overshoot like if mouse trails were enabled, just don't)

Before anyone has a sook about the "free shipping over $199" like on that last thread, it's a pretty heavy unit at 8.2kg (not incl. packaging) and the exclusion is clearly stated on BPC's shipping policy page.

Cheers for the mad bargain BPC, couldn't be happier.

  • What are the main differences between this and the U3415W? Besides being newer.

    • +1

USB-C PD is the biggest one.

    • USB C hub and power delivery up to 90W.

      • also has virtual KVM

so you can run the monitor from usb c or charge stuff/ run laptop etc via the usb c

        • Virtual kvm is for switching between the two hdmi ports isn't it? ie you have 2x computers plugged in

        • U3415W also has KVM, so not a difference to list as per the question OP asked.

    • +1

Aside from USB-C - the panels seem pretty comparable in specifications but the curvature is different, U3415W is 3800R while U3419W is 1900R so it's a fair bit more curved

  • +2

What is the condition of this? The previous U3415W from the other seller listed as excellent.

Also, $47 shipping fee seems to kill the deal. UN Tech only charged a $20 flat rate last time.

    • +1

Would be good to know what the condition is - UN Tech had commented and said no dead pixels or scratches on the screen.

I wouldn't say that the shipping kills the deal though, you'd expect the U3419 to be more expensive than the U3415 so if you compare $220 for that one to $250 for this one it's still a great price

      • Definitely still a great price, was $237 for me and condition was perfect (no scratches on screen, no dead pixels).

Just checked the display usage time today and mine reads just over 3800 hours, which is about normal for a screen this age that was used in an office daily. (The way different monitors clock up hours also varies between models, so it could well be less than this amount of actual "screen on time", but I can't say for sure without testing and can't be bothered testing :P)

Possible that some units will come in with way less usage than mine, but fwiw mine has no signs of image retention, no brightness or uniformity issues, etc - image is fantastic.

Also the viewing angles are superb - I know IPS is generally known for this over VA screens, but honestly it's not always the case - there's terrible angle-dependent "sheen" and washout on certain models that makes them almost as bad as VA, as well as stuff like vignetting around the edges on many, so I was genuinely pleased to find that none of that shit on this panel - it was an above average if not higher tier monitor when new, and that shows. Would take this unit over a brand new Kogan any day.

Edit: forgot to mention, manufacture date on mine was April 2019.

        • Hey how do you check display usage time on this monitor? thanks

          • @cathalm8: following….
I done a google but nothing.. only found diag menu which went though all the colours

          • +1

@cathalm8: @cathalm8 @B-Man02 sorry for slow reply on checking the monitor usage hours, I use ddcutil (a Linux command line utility).

You should be able to run it from just about any Linux distro booted from a live USB stick, but if that sounds like complete gobbledygook or too much work you could try using a Windows port of the same thing, e.g. winddcutil

        • Hey OP, I am looking to buy this monitor, but asked them about warranty and it sounds a bit vague:

Please also note physical damage and cracked screens are not covered by warranty but if this happens in transit to you then this will be covered by the transit insurance with the shipping company.

Did you get the extra insurance for transit?
          Thanks!

Received mine today. Bought Wednesday night.
Quality is good. One small dent on the frame but otherwise screen is spotless. Was delivered in the box of model U3423W so packaging was reliable. Happy with the purchase, I paid $225 with the cheapest delivery option.

  • What's a good cheap arm to suit one of these?

  • How is the condition of these?

  • For those who wondering about condition, it varies unit by unit so I can only tell my experience.

Picking up mine today. No dead pixel found (yet). There is no USB type C cable so you would need to supply your own. However there are a power and a DPI - DPI cable in the box.

The cosmetic is so so. The Dell logo lost letter E and L. It is dusty but a quick wipe made it sparkling clean.

For $200 it is good value. But I wont pay more than that.

    • Thanks for the information.

  • Ordered on Wednesday came on Friday. Amazing … would defo recommend

  • Anyone who purchased this monitor, do you have any issues with the USB-C Power Delivery and MacBook Pro 2021?

I saw this article and people complained about USB-C PD not per specs and causing different laptops (both MacBook Pro and Windows) to wake every 60 seconds or so

    https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/monitors/u38…

I was so keen to purchase this but the above issue hold me off at the moment. Not sure if a new firmware have addressed it.

    • I'm amazed by Dell's responses in that thread

  • Received mine on Friday.
    Unfortunately it is faulty

    https://imgur.com/a/H0Wf2mt

    • Looks random in terms of quality. Not sure if they tested it before shipping. Did you get a refund?

  • Had anyone stacked 2 of these? If so any thoughts/feedback?

    • I havent stacked two of these, but I posted my suggestions re: stacked 34's here:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15900178/redir

In short, you want to lower them as much as possible, so that you minimise the amount you have to look up to use the top monitor (looking up causes more neck strain than looking down). You can do this by lowering the bottom monitor right to the desk, or even better, by tilting it upwards to face you more (when looking down). If you want to get even more fancy, you can even drop the monitors BELOW your desk surface (either by wall mounting, or using a raised kb & mouse like I do), so your bottom monitor is effecively lower than your desk surface (but far enough back to not be obstructed).

You either want the top monitor to be positioned at an ergonomic height (or slightly above), so that you can use it comfortably. OR if you are using the bottom monitor as your main monitor at ergonomic height, then you would only want to use the top monitor as a sceen to glance at (like 90%:10% usage) - like having video feeds up on the top screen.

But yeah, if using the top screen as an actual workspace, you wouldnt just stick it above your existing monitor.

Think of it this way: if using both screens as main screens (50:50 usage), then effectively you should position them as one large screen. Which would mean that the lower monitor would need to be significantly lower than it would be when positioning it by itself.

      • That is really insightful thank you for taking the time. What's your opinion on stacking these vs a single larger screen sectioned into ~4 screens, much difference or advantages one way or the other? Currently running 2x27 flat side by side and a laptop screen next to it…

        • I think it's largely a personal preference - whether you like the minimalist / de-cluttering of a single screen, or more flexibility of workspaces with multiple monitors. I personally prefer the latter.

2x 34 ultrawides would give you a bit more desktop realestate to work with than one single 4K screen, and the flexibility of seperate screens to fullscreen videos/apps to, etc. While a single 4K screen obviously allows you to use your whole screen area to fullscreen a video.

Main thing will be the aspect ratios will be different, and the ways you can carve up your workspaces will be different between the two options. So you kinda have to think about how you work, and how you like to split up your screens. One option may suit more than the other.

You could also consider buying one screen (either 34" ultrawide or a 4K screen), and keeping one of your 27" screens as a second monitor off to the side (I would put it on an arm, and rotate between portrait and landscape to suit your usage). Could try putting your laptop below and in front of the other monitors, to give you more horizontal space, if your desk isnt big enough.

If your current monitors are QHD: 34" ultrawide and 27" QHD would be matching height and vertical resolution / ppi. So that is an alternative to consider instead of buying 2x 34" and stacking.

Just some random thoughts. It will really come down to personal preference I think. (Fwiw, I used to run 1x 34" ultrawide + 1x 32" 4K. I didn't really prefer either screen to the other - I liked each one for different things.)

Just picked mine up, no issues. Some minor scratches on the front chin and running an older firmware (M3B103) which I've now updated. No dead pixels (yet) and it only came with a power and displayport cable (no USB-C) in a Dell U2423WE box.

The guy mentioned they had 400 in stock which they expected would take a couple months to sell, but they've already sold 200 of them in a week! I wonder if they know about this OzB post

  • Just unboxed mine. Looks good physically however, 1 dead/stuck pixel. Not noticeable unless fully black screen. DP cable and power cable supplied. Don't have a good enough USB-C cable to test yet!

  • +1

Thanks @itscyanide for posting this. I received mine today, was packaged well and in great condition, so far quite happy :)
I had a pair of U2515H's, and I'm loving the switch to ultrawide so far. I'm a software dev and graphic design guy.

    • Hey mate, how are you going with the new monitor? I'm considering this one too and was curious what your thoughts are.

And which monitor arm did you go with? The Brateck one?

      • +1

        Sure :)

I have found the response time to be a bit slow - there is a slightly noticeable 'ghosting' effect particularly when dragging content that has edges between dark and light (e.g. white text on a dark background). Changing the monitor's response time setting to 'Fast' makes the effect appear even worse. So this monitor is definitely not for gaming.

EDIT: Even scrolling on this OzB page I can just notice the slight ghosting effect on the comment text. If you think you'd be sensitive to this, get something better.

Absolutely fine for coding and general productivity tasks though. I am digging the ultrawide size and resolution. Colour seems good to me too. For the price I am quite happy.

I already had an existing monitor arm.

  • Anyone know if this dell stand would fit?

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/145754444145

    • That stand has a ‘bump’ on the VESA mounting front face which interferes with older monitors. You can see it on the side view picture and what they call the ‘round raised circle fit’ in the listing. Looking at my monitor, there’s no matching recess for the ‘bump’ so I don’t think it would fit. Really annoying of Dell which I’ve encountered swapping between their new and older monitors before

      • Ah ok. Thanks very much

  • A query for the monitor gurus on this forum please - which one would you recommend between this monitor & the Dell S3422DWG - 34" (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/877370). Main uses would be productivity, browsing & watching shows. Thank you!!

    • +1

Without reading reviews of either monitor, the key difference between the two will probably be tbe refresh rate.

Whether the higher refresh rate matters to you is personal preference. People who are used to high refresh rates will probably say 60hz is way too low, even just for your mouse moving around the screen (not even for gaming). The reality is, 60hz is perfectly fine for lots of people.

So yeah, it really just depends if high refresh rates matter to you. To some, it definitely does matter (even for non-gaming usage). To others it doesnt (particularly for productivity / general usage only).

      • thank you!

    • +1

Other major difference is this is IPS, that other one is a VA panel.

No idea what your "productivity" is, so hard to advise. For general office work type stuff, always want IPS. Watching content you want VA.

      • But is VA still fine for office work? Or is it noticeable to go IPS? I mainly use Excel, so whatever will make that look the best…

  • I puchased this and its reasonably good condtion. However I cant get the video from laptop to work through the usb c. I even purchased a new usbc 3.2 cable whcij says 60hz x 4k in the decription but it onlt works intermittently. Alot of the time the monjtor says cant find usbc signal so i also need to use hdmi..

  • Mine came today, large scratch on the screen, nothing loose in the box that would of done it and was on flat cardboard in its original box which strongly suggests it was shipped like this.

    https://prnt.sc/6K6vpKrg9yvE

    • Are you able to exchange it?

      • +1

Contacted them, they sent me a new one, waiting now for it, fast response can't fault them on that.

  • Mine came today and I got shipped a U3417W instead…. dead giveaway was the lack of a USB C port.

    • Will you return it?

      • +2

Yea I've reached out to get a replacement

  • +1

Got mine, in excellent condition, excellent quality for the price, no visible defects I can see so far

So it seems like luck of the draw
