No dramas yet with the CVT but Im well aware of the issues which is why this deal got me interested.

  • +1

So how does this compare to the alternatives?
    Mazda CX-3
    Toyota Corolla
    Toyota corolla cross
    Kia Seltos
    Chery tiggo 4

How did you get deactivated so fast?

      • The question ..WHY?

      • +1

The lesson is to never insult the Toyota Corolla!

    • how does it compare to the mercedes CLS?

    • YouTube has heaps of reviews. As does whirlpool.

Is there any Chinese Hatback for $15k

    • +21

I can give you your hat back for way less than $15k

      • +1

I can give less than 100 bucks

      • you heartless thief

    • Yes a 1-2 year old MG3. Still got 5-6 years worth of warranty left.

      • +1

I'd rather eat a cactus than get a MG3. That being said you can get yourself into a Kia Picanto for just under 20k (depending on your haggling skills), the MG3 will set you back about the same.

The Picanto has 4 stars on ANCAP ratings and the MG3 remains unrated (most likely would have received under 3 stars).

I'd get the Kia Picanto for the same price any day of the week.

        • Me & you both. I actually wouldn't mind a Picanto as a little runabout, specially with a 5 speed manual.

    • Import an entry level new Corolla from China,
      Yes it's 15K there lol

      • how to drive left hand drive cars in australia

  • +1

waiting for the "Fortunately, we have Chinese company, as the Germans and Japanese have overcharged Australians without justification."

    • +5

It's the typical companies doing the same thing year on year. Genesis (owned by, you name it.. Kia and Hyundai) just did a $8,000 annual increase.
Annually Kia and Hyundai increase by $6000-$9000

Mercedes just did price drop by $8,000.

Year on year you can expect Toyota, Kia and Hyundai to do massive increases. Mazda is subtle $6000 increase on average for selling a 8 year old car.

    • +1

why are you waiting for that though?

  • +2

I wonder if they have better QC on the export versions of the cars?

Seen plenty of videos out of China where corrosion is a major issue after 2 to 3 years.

To cut the price they often cut corners rather than become more efficient to drive the price cuts.

    • Highly doubt it, the Chinese cars sold in Russia suffered the same issue.

  • -2

Damn cheap but Hyundai/Kia entry models not that much more coin.

  • If you live away from the coast and the sea breeze they maybe ok .
I wouldn’t want one if you were driving on salted roads like Northern Europe, North America or Russia.

Haval - for if you HAVE no money.

    • +10

      If you're on ozbargain though..

    • 24k is still a fair bit of money.

      More like HAV ALmost money.

    • This is cheap. The repayment is so low you will have spare money. Unlike some broke man flaunting their wealth with a Mercedes and struggling to pay petrol.

      • I have a Mercedes

  • -1

First time I've heard of Haval before. Are they a fairly small car manufacturer here?

    • +10

You've really never heard of Haval? I feel like every third ute I see on the road these days are Haval.

      • I've never heard of Haval before. I haven't heard of Chery either (comment below) Are they pretty big down here?

        • +1

Haval/GWM has been in Australia for.. gotta be close to a decade now I think? Pretty sure there were all branded 'Great Wall' back in the day but Haval became their own brand at some point. Anecdotally, they were really crap and riddled with problems when they first came to Australia, but apparently they're pretty good now.

Cherry I think is much younger in Australia but I reckon they've grown heaps in the last 12-18 months. I see a lot of them around these days too, mostly SUVs. They're affordable and looks nice but no idea about their quality.

No personal experience with either brand, but their price compared to competitors are amazing.

        • they are big in China not so much here. think Kia/Hyundai back in the days, not great, not too terrible, good value for what you get if you temper your expectations

    • They launched in Australia over a decade ago with the slogan, “You can Haval it all” - inferring that you can finally have a house AND a car. The ads were quite amusing at the time.

      • whenever I see one on the road I think to myself, 'they just need to have it all, don't they?'

    • Big manufacturer in China, The Haval H6 beat the RAV4 to become China's best-selling SUV a few years ago, but it's now been beaten by new EVs.
Don't think it will be as reliable as Toyota, but also don't think it can beat Toyota with poor quality.

    • under the Great Wall Motor group GWM

they started here with cheap utes and such. grew the brand and trust

ppl never gunna let go of their anti chinese racism

forgetting that car tech is decades old. China has dozens of brands and decades of experience refining it and manufacturing for other countries.

Cheap Chinese car with a dual clutch transmission… Sounds like a recipe for fun 😅

  • Damn that's tempting.

  • +5

wow this is cheap. maybe i will hold off until trump takes office, the tariffs are sure to drop the prices lower for Australia

    • How so?

      • +1

Possibly more tariffs on not just Chinese EVs but Chinese ICE too = they will dump more Chinese cars on Aussie shores.

        • OK, I will wait for the price drop!

        • There is no market in America for Chinese cars… Europe maybe though they are getting tariffs too…

    • American drive on the wrong side of the cars the Chinese are not making American their cars apart from Tesla and being an OEM supplier. What it will do with Trump, is that the Chinese will now focus their production for the rest of the world instead that isn’t america or Europe.

      • not america, not europe…. bangla desh and australia?
        did I forget the kiwis?

        • Add Hong Kong , Macau, Singapore , Malaysia and Thailand. All markets thirsting for more EVs.

  • Horrible fuel economy

  • +1

This or a clapped out 10 yr old v6 commodore with stockies?

    • Can't drift a Haval so clearly the V6 Commy

      • You cant drift with those new electric hand brakes either. Yes ive 'attempted' it :P

  • I think you're better off on a lease with anything Chinese. There is no aftermarket for them basically.

    • +2

i don't think 'aftermarket' means what you think it means.

      • -1

I think you know exactly what I mean.

        • +1

We know what you mean, even though you've used the wrong word.

        • At the internet and peoples' obsession with challenging some statement on definition while ignoring the key message. A true classic

    • You mean i cant put an aftermarket giant gt wing on chinese made cars? Dam…

    • what…. no foxtails and bigger shiny wheels?

  • I mean, if you get the cheap one and keep it for 6.5 years (still in warranty) and can get back around 40% of what you paid for it ($10k), I guess around $2k depreciation per year isn't too bad…. Not sure if be keeping it any longer then that, but since this model has been around for a while now, you'll know how well they have held up last the warranty date.

    • -1

Who's paying 10k for a 5 year old second hand one. You'd be lucky to get 4k in 7 years. One of the reasons there's no old Chinese cars floating around isn't because people hold on to them. They've been around 15/20 years.

  • +1

I had a Uber ride in this car. It was quite comfortable as a passenger.

    • Same here, have few uber rides in Haval. It’s comfy and drivers were very happy with Haval too.

    • Yes. HEAPS of rear leg room. I wished they could slide forward at times to give it a bigger boot.

  • +8

When I last spoke to my mechanic he said to avoid the Jolion and get the h6 hybrid.

but at this price it's mighty tempting, and anything with over 150 upvotes is an automatic buy anyway, irrespective of whether you need the item or not.

  • Will be under 25k

  • +1

Jesus some of these comments… Some people have so much free time on their hands to go in depth into calcs n stuff …

    • Big spend decision, analysis is good. I totally get just buying the damn thing though.

      • I'm just jealous i guess, wish i had the time to go through things in this amount of detail.

        • yeah I hear you. Im lazy and spend enough time thinking about this kind of stuff at work that now I'm a bit like eh I'll think a little bit but there's a limit.

  • +2

Oh FFS - just picked up one of these 2 days ago…

    • Ouch!
I don't suppose you're willing to provide your honest review, for those that may be interested?

      • +1

Probably a bit too early to give a solid review as we've only driven it 100ks in the 2 days that we've had it…. I was impressed with the tech for the price - need to put some black tape on the camera that watches you for fatigue/attention as it beeps at you if you are wearing sunglasses, this can be turned off in the setting when you 1st get in the car but needs to be done each time. Cabin is roomier than what we have upgraded from, especially for the kids.

For me personally it was going from a Mazda BT-50 with 220,000 ks on the clock and always worried that it was going to blow a motor, turbo or transmission and be up for a huge expense. It's nice knowing we have warranty for 7 years (unlimited k's) if there are any issues going forward.

        • -1

Beeping at you for wearing sunglasses is a massive fail. Obviously no real world testing done with these cars and its all just designed on a pc.

          • +1

@DiscoJango: Correct me if i'm wrong - but I think to get an Ancap 5 star rating there has to be driver monitoring tech (which this is), not sure if it's a common problem across other makes.

    • Surely they'll give you a partial refund considering the short time frame?

      • I've reached out to the dealer and waiting for a reply - what's really annoying is their website was saying the $1000 discount was until the 31st Dec and they must have known there was a new discount coming and could have told me

        • +1

That's where the word "Stealership" comes from :)

          • @Zackeroo: Just got an email back and they're not going to do anything about it

Anyone looking into buying GWM cars should look into into the 'warranty' and after sales 'care' that other owners have experienced when trying to get their vehicles repaired, many with very low mileage.

  • How does the roadside assistance that all the brands offer work? Is it just outsourced to the NRMA etc?

    • Of course it is

  • +2
    • -1

it looks similar to Sorrento/Santa Fe, isn't it?

      • The Sorento/Santa Fe are larger. The Jolion is closer to a Sportage/Tucson

  • +3

We are lucky in Australia to have big variety of cars creating healthy competition in favor of customers.

It’s your money and should be yours too.

    • Or… unlucky in australia to have such a big variety of cars, creating low spares stocks and high prices with lengthy repair delays….

  • +1

I had a Hyundai DCT vehicle. Required a clutch and flywheel change at 165,000km as it was rattling at idle and was on the brink of failure.

    $5200

I'm now driving a traditional automatic. Yes, they can break in fun and expensive ways too, but I would rather a traditional automatic.

  • As others said, need to compare today, last 5 years has been crazy. Your choice for $24k today is a new Jolion or 5yo base Rav 4 with 120k on the clock. https://www.redbook.com.au/cars/details/2019-toyota-rav4-gx-…

Rav4 will depreciate slower, but start to cost more to keep on the road as no fixed price servicing.

If you want compare new, then the RACQ reports give a better cost guide, but adjust for your own situation. https://www.racq.com.au/-/media/project/racqgroup/racq/artic…

Rav4 retains 63% of value after 5 years verses 38% with the Jolion, so a $46k Rav4 loses $17k and $24k Jolion $15k (the $24k Rav4 only loses $9k). But you need to consider loan costs too…

    • +3

There is no way that you would be able to buy a used Jolion in 5 years with 2 years remaining warranty for 9k

      • -1

That's based on the RACQ estimate. Market probably be flooded with Chinese SUVs about to go out of warranty. You decide!

Might even be less if they are no longer here, doubt market can sustain all the brands looking to come here, XPeng now…

        • I know what I can buy with 9k today from looking on FB marketplace and Carsales and I can guarantee there is nothing you could buy that would be 5 years old, under 100'ks that still has manufacturer warranty…. Not trying to be rude, but have you actually had a look at what 9K buys in today's market?

          • -1

@urbancartel: True, but as per a lot of comments last 5 years have been crazy and not a good guide if looking forward 5 years. I bought a 5yo Kia Cerato ($24k new at the time) for $9k in 2018. Still have it, could probably get most of my $9k back!
