This title makes me sleepy … zzzzzzzzz

  • +1

Does it give free neck cracking?

  • +1

how does this compare to all the mattress in a box ones like emma/koala/ecosa etc?

    • +4

This IS a mattress in a box.

    • +5

These have been selling way before koala etc - fantastic mattresses from my experience. Have bought multiple over the years and recently furnished a new house with them too. Very comfortable.

      • +2

did you buy multiple for other reasons or they just won't last?

        • -2

He just wanted to contribute equitably to landfill like all good OZBers

  • +1

Anyone have one and can speak about the quality? Debating between this or an IKEA/Koala mattress.

    • +21

Firmer than koala. Better side support than koala. Cheaper than koala. Hotter than koala

    • +5

I have been using these for last 4 years and can recommend them for their medium firmness and overall quality.

      • +3

I guess firmness must be subjective as I find koala mattress too firm already and another poster said this is even more firm

      • +5

Elaborate - did it sag? What slats was it used on? Was was the weight range of usage?

    • +4

we had ikea and it sagged quicker than this zzz. i bought another zzz to replaced that ikea

    • +11

Mine started sagging within 12-18 months, have probably had it for five years. Given how much I paid i’m okay with that, but definitely due for a replacement mattress - not sure if I’ll buy another one of these.

      • +1

for our masters bedroom, we bought sealy posturepedic. what i noticed is thats firmer on the sides compared to zzz. but its more than double the price of zzz lol

      • +1

I'm in the same boat, had it 4-5 years, definitely starting to notice a sag in it. But then I weigh over 100kg and it's sitting on an old as anything boxspring, so it's not that surprising. The boxspring voids the warranty too (even though it hasn't sagged enough to meet the warranty yet, it's still not doing my back a whole lot of good).

My biggest problem is figuring out what to buy otherwise. A new frame is probably more important.

        • +3

Upgrade your base and every mattress will be amazingly better.

I made my own correctly spaced slats out of bunnings MGP10 for ~$50, a staple gun and some velcro tape.

Each slat can hold a person's weight, try doing that with ikea slats or cheap spring bases..

        • -4

But then I weigh over 100kg

Crikey, wishing you a speedy recovery.

      • +2

I've had one which lasted 6 years without sagging one bit. I weigh about 60+kg. Are you by any chance quite a bit heavier?

        • Over that period I have been anywhere from 72-80kg, so not a weight that should have much impact on mattress sagging.

          • @NedStark102: Oh ok, maybe questionable quality then since weight isn't the issue. I've never had issues with mine but looks like it's not consistent for everyone.

            • @clubhonda: Yeah definitely seems to be inconsistent, but at this pricepoint I went in with that expectation. It seems even with the pricier mattresses it can be a bit of a gamble, so it's hard to know where to go if you're happy to spend a little more.

          • @NedStark102: I weighed 72kg when I had one from IKEA, and definitely sagged into a valley of sorrows.

    • +1

I had an IKEA from 2017 to 2020. The firmest one available. It sagged. It sucked. It cooked in the summer.

      • +1

We still talking about beds here bro or…?

    • +1

Koala was meh. We ended up getting an Ikea pocket spring mattress with a topper. Firm mattress, soft topper, good middle ground.

    • +1

most of the reviews for these mattresses and the ones you mentioned are fake

      buyer beware

      and none are australian

if you care about quality, warranty, your back and not buying a mattress every year or 2 then buy a basic sealy imho

  • +1

Had one for 5 years and no complaints. You can tell it's not the same quality as an expensive big brand though. If you're an easy sleeper and don't care about mattresses then it's worth it or also a great spare room mattress.

  • +3

I am using their products since last 7 years. Pretty happy with the quality and firmness that they offer. No complaints so far.

  • +5

Extra firm mattress are rock hard and very good for the back lol. If you put a latex mattress topper then bobs ya uncle and the thick 34cm mattresses are extremely comfortable as I use it for my 7 year old son. For kids they'd last forever for an adult the 34cm will probably last a few years but the extra firm would last a lifetime.

    • +1

Any links for the extra firm? Link seems to head directly to medium firm

      • +2
      • +3

        I have the extra firm.
Had it for 3 years now, still as new.

Be warned it is extra firm.
I can stand on it, on one foot, and at about 100kg, not sink in at all.

    • +2

These sag for me in 2-3 years.

      • +3

Same, and it was far too hot.

  • +10

I'm only 73kgs, had 2 of these and both sag horribly, a Queen and a King Single.

    • +3

Same, ours sagged also, was a nightmare for warranty claim, in the end i gave up and just brought another brand and its been great.

      • +1

What did you got with? I'm looking at getting a sealy posturepedic atm.

        • went with sleep republic

      • +1

Also interested in what you went with after

      • +1

Sounds like the quality control of these Aterlier mattresses is inconsistent. Some found theirs good and long lasting, others sagged so quickly.

        • +1

The older model was definitely better quality, but it still sags. Just took a while longer to start.

          • +1

@BriefNexus: Correct. The older model had a bit more weight to it - which suggests the springs were stronger/better quality.

        • Two factors ahead of QC:

          1. Weight of the user
          2. Frequency of rotation (if any)
          • @wisdomtooth: no, they are just cheap mattresses with poor quality materials

that combined with heat sensitive padding which soften after a few hours of sleeping due to body heat and lose integrity

these cheap mattresses are great, for 6 months, then it's usually downhill form there

low tech mattresses of the past would last decades without issue, these things are built for landfill imho

        • Strange. Me and my sibling bought 6 of Aterlier mattresses in different sizes to furnish our homes. The oldest one is over 5 years old. None is sagged yet. Lucky dip?

  • +1

We've had a King version of one of these for a couple of years now and I quite like it, although my partner complains that it sags in the middle (we are using the ZZZ Atelier ensemble base too - have heard horror stories of ZZZ Atelier being very difficult with warranty for sagging if you aren't using their base).

Not sure if I can be bothered going around the roundabout with them trying to claim their "15 year" warranty on ours…but for the price, it's still pretty much impossible to beat.

    • +1

Their warranty is BS. BTW I got Scandi bedframes from them too. Flimsly as . One was damaged out of the box and the other is wobbly. POS.

      • Similar experience here.

  • +3

Have been using them for 6+ years now. They have been great so far and super affordable.

  • +1

I had the old version. And now sleeping on the new on for the past 5 yeas. The folders version was way better quality and materials. Pro tip don't sit on the edges they sag. Beside of that no complaint beside the price that raise quite substantially but they are no Tesla's right that get better and cheaper haha.

  • +10

These sag after a year or so. Bought two based on OzB user recommendations but not worth it IMO.

    • +1

can confirm this is true after 2 years and they made it so difficult to claim warranty. big L

  • This mattress is priceless

    • +1

      Haha

      NTS, varies by size.

  • Chiropractic? So a ghost appeared to the manufacturer with the blueprint ?

  • +5

Cheaper on WW Marketplace with recent 35% cashback. Picked up a King for 290.
Agree with comments they eventually sag - most mattresses do - but at this price point just get a new one every 4 years.

    • +1

      This one?

      Expired.

      • +1

There's been about 5 similar deals in past couple of months. Won't need to wait long for another.

        • @dairy-coffee posted this 28% SB CB deal 1.5h ago.

The prices at WW seem to be 20% dearer than at the eBay store, but include free shipping. With the 28% cashback (and 10% off from WW Mobile, etc?) seems like it's indeed the cheapest option.

  • +1

As most know you spend 1/3 of your life on your mattress…..so I'm all for sving a buck but dunno if penny pinching is a great idea - and I have one of these in our spare room, pretty ordinary mattress.

Try Karl @ Ausbeds, he's a member here and a very nice guy - great beds at very fair prices.

    • +2

I have an Ausbeds, top of the line, since late 2022. Not bad, but within a month we had noticeable body impressions i believe from the latex layer on top (could be wrong). I get body aches from time to time side sleeping on it too. Never had either happen with a bed so quickly. Customer support whilst seemingly willing came off as obsessed with it being over the phone rather than in writing, and referring to wanting it firmer when raising issue of body impressions. Two very different things imo. Failure on my part i didnt follow through, life crap distractions, and so have just put up with it since.

      • +1

Doesn’t body aches from side sleeping = it’s too firm?

I’ve had a medium firm sleeping duck (one of the more expensive mattress in a box) for about 7 years now. Side sleeper, wake up with shoulder pains, had to buy a mattress topper to make it bearable.

It’s great for back sleepers though.

        • Yeah normally i would agree, but it just didnt feel like that was the case. It was more about the hip and upper leg. I think we have it at level 8 in their system. Anything less honestly felt not firm enough compared to our prior bed. That specific issue is less regular these days thankfully. The visible body impressions within a fortnight i found very dissappointing.

          • +1

@Xizor: "The visible body impressions within a fortnight I found very disappointing."

If I add a piece of foam to the bottom of the mattress, the cosmetic effect you are referring to will disappear. There's no reason to be disappointed; we can hone the mattress to your preferences.

"It was more about the hip and upper leg." The upper layers are probably too firm for your personal preferences. We can adjust these to be softer, which will solve this issue.

I also just wanted to add, one thing we see a lot, and I'm not saying it's happening here, is that people will have flexible slats in their bed base. This quite often can give the appearance of sagging. But what is happening is the mattress is conforming to the sagging slats underneath. Many mattresses go down this way. Loads of these flexi-slat bases are out there as flexi slats are much cheaper than the superior pine slats.

      • +1

Hi Xixor, Did you talk to me about it? I own ausbeds and I aim to never let anyone down. I aim always to make sure my customers are satisfied. I'm not sure what happened here, but it says you didn't follow through, really difficult to solve these issues if you don't follow through.

"Customer support whilst seemingly willing came off as obsessed with it being over the phone rather than in writing"

This is correct, we just talk to people so we can solve the problem quickly. So often customers diagnose the mattress issue. I understand these mattresses at such an extremely deep level that I can usually hone in on the issue after a quick chat. Writing an email telling me what is wrong and how to fix it is not really going to yield very good results and the reason is simple. As soon as something goes wrong with a mattress, the customer immediately assumes the latex is to blame.

In exactly zero cases we have found this to be true. If I listened to customers about this,

        1. we would to end up throwing this wonderful material in the trash for no reason.

        2. we would be wasting the customers and our time as this is never whats wrong with the mattress.

The reason for voice communication is to diagnose the problem. It would not be possible back and forth over email. I just want to get to the heart of the problem and have you sleeping comfortably again.

When you say body impressions, I'm feeling like you are saying there it's visible where you lay. This may be because I make the covers quite loose. This is because if you make the cover tight, it creates a drum effect and the contour-ability of the mattress is sacrificed. However, a side effect of this is that the cover isn't tight like a harvey norman big puffy quilted mattress that's pulled really tight and glued in place.

Mines quite loose and not thickly quilted. Some people are very sensitive to the "look" of this. At every point of the process of making my mattresses when I'm faced with a choice of looks or comfort/functionality, I choose comfort/functionality. I do it in many areas of the design. After all, the main function of a mattress is to be comfy/supportive, not to look good.

For people that want the cover tight, it's very simple, we add a 25mm layer of foam under the springs, this pulls the cover tight, blam, now everything looks tight. This always satisfies people that are sensitive to the look. But there is a trade-off, it won't be as comfy. Very rarely do I have people wanting to do this after I explain this concept to them. Probably once a year we do this.

"I get body aches from time to time side sleeping on it too. Never had either happen with a bed so quickly"

This is a fit issue. You should understand that if you are getting aches, you need to adjust the mattress. I have an entire factory full of components for this exact purpose. If it's aches in the back, you might be sinking in too much, we need to bring the hips up, (make the springs firmer) if it's aches on the edges of your hips and shoulders, we might need to look at making the top or support softer.

For people that require the shoulders/hips to sink in more, the cloud is the way to go, other people don't like this, so they take the aurora. Some people need more cushioning on top, some need less. Matching these things up is what we do. I have 45 (main) variations of feels and people choose all different ones. It's entirely possible there is a better combo for you. It's possible that you don't have the right combo which is causing the aches. Aches are a very good predictor of the wrong combo of parts.

I like to compare this to shirts. If you buy a shirt, and you wear it, and say "this shirts bad quality, it's too tight" you would be incorrect. The quality of the shirt could be very high, you just got the fit wrong. Fit and quality are 2 different things.

You really shouldn't be putting up with it. Why don't you give me a call and I'll sort it out for you, it's really very simple to solve. What you, or anyone with a problem at ausbeds should do is just follow our process, if we say we need to speak, speak to us, if we diagnose the issue, just follow our instructions, solving these issues is all we do every day. We are good at it. We want to fix it as quickly as possible.

Just send me an email with your phone number, I'll call you and sort it out, I can't sort it out if you don't talk to me. [email protected] Or I have a whatsapp or phone number on my website, we are there everyday helping people adjust and tweak their ausbeds mattresses. Karl, owner at ausbeds.

  • +2

Have had a couple of these over the years, these will sag after a year or two

  • +2

Good supportive bed especially for the price. Sagging comments are true - however if you turn the bed every couple of months as is recommended it lasted well for me. It wasn't until I got lazy and stopped doing it that a slight sag developed (after 2.5 years or so of ownership) - mine wasn't substantial and very tolerable but can imagine it would get worse. Perhaps this problem could be worse for heavier folks too.
For reference I bought a queen.

The sides aren't the greatest for sitting on either, there's a little bit of give, if that's important to you.

    • How much do you weigh?

      • +1

        Have fluctuated but around 70-75.

  • +1

Terrible sagging after a couple of years when you try to claim warranty they will ask you to take 1 million measurements and photos to prove the sagging occurs. Probably to justify an extreme level before they would even classify that as warranty

  • Bought queen size 5.5yr ago.
    Very happy with it.
    Regularly turned, no noticeable sag.
Edges still quite firm - often sleep at edge. And regularly sit on edge with no problem.

    • Black Label or Extra Firm?

      • +1

        Wondering that.
Can't find the details. Not shown on eBay order.

Label (which is black) shows little more than Zzz Atelier.
        Guess it is Black Label.

Bought in eBay Deal for $215
On an old sturdy wooden base.

        • +1

          They look different:

If its sides are dark, it's Black Label, otherwise Extra Firm.

          • +1

@wisdomtooth: Thanks. Guess they've changed look.

Sides are cream with horizontal black band. As you commented - shown on eBay listing for Black Label.

It replaced a very saggy Sealy.
            Would buy these again.

            • +2

@INFIDEL: I bought the old model at least 7 years ago and am similarly very happy with it. Reports, from when they changed to the new model, suggested it wasn't as good as the old and prone to sagging. So I just did some digging, and this one looks the same as the old model. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/175312381407 I might give it a go for a couple of kid's mattresses and see how they compare.

              • @tryagain: With shipping and discount (PRES15), the Dreamz single turns out dearer ($221) than the Zzz's ($199). I'll go with the better known Zzz (I can't even find Dreamz on ProductReview.com.au).

                • @wisdomtooth:

With shipping and discount (PRES15), the Dreamz single turns out dearer ($221) than the Zzz's ($199)

Shipping depends on location, but with discounts, the single only cost me $134, and looks like I might have stumbled on a way to get free shipping to my location. Will wait and see if the order is shipped and it pans out.

                  • @tryagain: Yeah, that's a pretty good deal, if indeed it is Zzz's old model.

Shipping to me is over $70.

                    So what's the trick?

        • +1

Looks like it's the Black Label old model (according to the photo in the eBay listing).

          • @wisdomtooth: There are 3 models in this eBay listing. Can you confirm which one?

            • @bigpallooka: I was referring to @INFIDEL's comment up above, not this Dreamz eBay listing @tryagain just brought up. Buying this different brand in the hopes of it being Zzz's old model based on looks alone seems like a long shot, though.

  • +1

Very value for money. My extra firm is about 7 years with once a year turn. Sag a bit after many years but i think it was because hours of sitting down watching tv on it every night.

  • +1

Had one of these as a guest bed mattress for a couple of years and everyone that stays over says how comfortable it is. My mum even bought one for her guests after using ours.

They are nice and firm-medium softness.

Can't comment on how long they hold their firmness, but I wouldn't expect a $300 mattress to last forever (unlike our 100% latex which is still the best mattress I've ever used 10 years later).

  • +5

Had it for 3 years. In the last year, it gave me severe back pain every morning. Initially I thought I was injured but since the mattress change have not had any issues.
