For LED lights, if you’re really care about lighting in your house, you should check the CRI rating of the light. For this light, they didn’t bother to list it, so I just assume its CRI is not that great, which can make things look dull in the evening.

    • thankyou i didnt know
these are for the porch and a hallway, so, meh in my case

      • Yeah for porch it’s totally fine I reckon.

    • What's that?

      • CRI stands for Colour Rendering Index. You generally want something above 90 to reproduce a nice colour otherwise everything looks dull and washed out.

Not bad, but the mirabella ones are $25 at Kmart/bunnings and I’m fairly* sure (happy to be corrected) can still be paired to tuya. They also have ability to do clean whites (warm to day) as opposed to mixing rgb to get white.

    • thanks. maybe once the ones that come with the home pop I'll replace all of them

    • +1

IIRC, they need to be paired to Tuya app initially or if they've been connected to Genio then you need to use the Tuya Convert utility.

Also note that there are some older versions which are warm white + colour, though I don't believe they are sold anymore.

      • these laser ones also need to go to tuya app first then home assistant

  • Too bad I don't have the light fixtures to attach these to.

they come with an ac plug
      hang them anywhere haha

      • 🤣🤣🤣

  • I need some dimmable / smart LEDs for my office/media room and probably replace the rest of the house if they are decent, any thoughts on if its worth getting the philips in the long term?
Leaning towards the Mirabella so far.

    These Vs

    Mirabella

    Vs Arlec Grid Connect

    vs Phillips Hue Akari
    Much more expensive.

    • these - assuming they're like the bayonet bulb - do not dim as much as my ancient lifx.

    • I got a Wiz one today. They were on special at JB. Seem pretty good. (Of course I had a perks code so only $19 in the end) Have matter support so local control. They are made by the same mob (Signify) as the Hue but they are wifi.

      • I grabbed 4 of those today also. Seems good so far!
Might do the rest of the house with them tomorrow.

Bonus I didn't even have to get in the roof, the plugs came to the holes when pulling out the old ones.

@rpb, great find! I went into JB at airport west and showed them this post and they matched the $19 each…. picked up all 4 that they had on the shelf. I think they had more out the back (I didn't ask, but the sales rep suggested that they may have more), but I'm happy with the 4 at the moment… still got a few of the Aldi ones from a few weeks back (yet to cloud-cutter them).

I've have a couple of the Laser ones and the Aldi ones and prefer the Aldi esp for $15.

If you haven't used the LASER10 code, it applies for minimum $40 purchase and I just used it to buy 3 of these for $47 delivered

      goddamn.sigh grrr

  • There is no light switch for my garage entrance, so I want to replace the lights with smart downlights that can be connected to a switch by the garage door. Using a phone to control them would be too inconvenient. Any recommendation?

    • Use google? Or set schedule? I haven’t come across any compatible smart buttons yet

    • Use sensors. Drive in or walk in and the lights turn on with a prescribed time to automatically turn off. Works perfect in our house. We do have a wall switch but haven't touched it in years. Alternatively put a dummy switch in with smart relays.

    • I quite like Philips Hue with the wireless switches. I also have a Hue sensor which could be used.

      home Assistant can help
put A energy measuring smart plastic
plug for your garage door. when power consumption goes at blah watts, indicating door opening , turn your light on for 10 min then off

    • Thank you all for your responses. Apologies for not making it clear earlier—I was referring to the switch for the downlight in the hallway after entering from the garage, which is not located near the door. I am looking into the Philips Hue hub, is this the only solution?

      • oh ok
then stick an nfc tag on the wall and use home assistant to tap it to turn the light on or off

      • Hue will likely be the best combination of quality + reliability + ease of setup/use. The tradeoff is cost.

You’d need a hue hub, hue dimmer switch and hue bulb(s). I’d expect to pay around $150, more for multiple bulbs or colour.

        • Hue has been the most reliable for me.

Lifx(gen 1) will occasionally stop responding and require switching on/off. Not annoying enough to consider replacing yet.

Genio has been fine but is constantly restarted as it is still used with the light switch and mainly used for colour temp.

Eventual low priority aim is to go to all Hues.

          As for hardware issues:

          • I sold off a Lifx tile due to issues with it turning itself in randomly. Lifx were a pain to deal with.
          • I've had hues die and replaced under warranty.
          • minor flicker with hue extensions
          • Had 1 Genio die(3 years)
          • Had 1 hue reach EOL(4 years)
  • Cloud connected lighting .. nooooo. Have you tried using Tuya Cloudcutter to disconnect it from the cloud so that it operates only locally?

    • i haven't tried cutting it off the internet no

    • cloud cutter seems more work than cutting off internet access to the device. or without internet they're inoperable?

      • Without cloud cutter does control of the device via HA need Internet access though? Most such cloud devices won't work without Internet access. I guess there's localtuya, unsure how reliable is as I have never used it.

        • +1

tuya local is the one to use these days. At least it's what I've been using since local tuya went buggy.

  • Tasmota?

  • Using aldi once since a year, works great and much cheaper.
