  • Moto G85 for $289 vs $299 galaxy s22 from amaysim with voucher.

    Thoughts?

    • how can I have the amaysim voucher?

    • +11

S22 has a much better camera setup, stronger flagship processor, but very weak battery life and a small 6.1" screen. Updates until Android 16 and security until Feb 2027.

G85 is a lower mid range Motorola with a much larger screen and long battery life. Up to Android 15 (maybe 16 due to Motorola's update improvements) and security until June 2028.

      • +2

G85 worth it for battery life alone.

      • Read the the moto screen is better

      • +2

I have the s22 as my driver and got the g84 to try. Let me tell you I prefer the g84. It's lighter and feels better in the hands 😊. And also it updates like stock Android.

    • +4

The G85 includes support for SD cards, which is essential for 128GB phones these days.

    • +1

Haven't tried the G85 but I bought my g84 to replace my water damaged Galaxy S20 Ultra.

The g84 is so much better in almost every way. It's much lighter, has better battery life, has a headphone jack, and I'm not constantly fighting Samsung's stupid AI crap which keeps trying to outguess me and recommend things I have no interest in.

My wife bought a Galaxy S24 and is constantly yelling at it because the 'Samsung Experience' apps keep interrupting what she's doing and there's no easy way to permanently disable them. Literally can't even update pre-installed Samsung apps without creating a Samsung account, which doesn't seem legal, people shouldn't be forced to create an account to install security updates. Even if we disable them they pop up again after each System Update. Feels more like a Windows 10 PC where I'm constantly fighting Microsoft's ideas of how I'm supposed to be using my PC, quite obnoxious.

Motorola's Karate Chop gesture to turn on the torch is literally a life saver. Power went out while I was carrying heavy boxes down a staircase so I was completely blind, but I was able to effortlessly turn on the torch and get myself to safety.

The Motorola camera isn't nearly as good as the Samsung. It's a little better after installing gCam but still very slow. If you have a family and want to preserve memories of them forever I'd go with the Samsung with its better camera, but if you use your phone to 'Get Shit Done' the Motorola is less traumatising.

EDIT: Almost forgot, I despised the curved screen on the Galaxy S20 Ultra. Remote Desktop sessions were painful because I couldn't tap things near the edge of the screen, I couldn't easily grasp the phone while holding it above my face lying in bed without accidentally tapping the curved edges, pictures looked like ass due to optical aberrations near the curves. So the g85 might be significantly worse than the g84 if you care about those things.

    can‘t add to cart, why?

    • Gotta select a colour?

  • +7

Bought the G85 as part of the Lenovo deal last week.

    Also had a G54.

For some reason I feel the G54 5g is snappier

    • Agreed

      • +2

And it has a phone jack!

      • +1

        @netjock
        @duodeta
        G54 on sale aswell now?

        • Nope. But if people are wondering from owner of both.

Might be worthwhile keeping an eye out on the G54 and bypass the G86

    • +1

I bought one too last week. After all cash backs only cost me $236. Not sure why this deal says its all time low?

      • I think because cashback not guaranteed so they take the headline price.

  • Off topic, what is the go-to roughly 6” or below sized Android phone around this price point?

Need one for the mother in law. These look great but she simply can’t handle a phone this large.

  • +2

    Not atl btw,but without cashback,yes

  • +1

still waiting for the G86 damn it.. if it's even coming.

    • +1

The moto g75 5G moto buds edition will arrive in Australia on the 14th of November for $499. You'll be able to check it out at JB HiFi, Harvey Norman, OfficeWorks, Big W, The Good Guys, BingLee, MobileCiti and motorola.com.au for RRP $499.

      • +1

        Non-oled screen motorola phone.
Pwm sensitive users will like a good ips lcd 120hz screen.
Is there a link up on any retailers web site?
        For $499, fair price.

  • Yeah it's def a good buy now that g85 has an esim in it

    Way way better than g55

    • Moto-G55: look forward to comments on it's 4Gb-RAM…will test frugalness 🤔

  • +1

Still don't see a reason why to upgrade from
    Xiaomi 11 Lite 5G NE.

    • Right, 5G NE is still having regular updates and it has a better processor than this. But the support will be ending soon and it won't get HyperOS 2.0

  • +3

Having read the comments, it seems that people are not happy with the curved screen of G85:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/872635

  • This is a pretty good price. I was waiting on the pixel 8 or S23 Fe using an S20 Fe now.. how is the camera on this thing? It seems to be using the sony system used on other budget Chinese phones like Xiaomi and Poco ? I do not play games, just calls, sms, social media that is it but this has a mediatek chip ..pixel size on the camera does not matter but the quality of pics, auto focus, OIS matters to me..any current G85 users owners care to comment on the camera experience ?

    • +2

I guarantee that your s20 FE has a better camera.

I guarantee even my S10 has a better camera.

This Motorola is mid range, but no one buys Motorola's for their cameras unlike Samsung's or iPhones or pixels.

      • Thanks..not for me then

  • +1

Bear in mind we have no way of being sure this cockup with our fully functional phones being booted off the network won't be repeated in future, since the telcos don't give a damn. See https://medium.com/@jamesdwho/australias-3g-shutdown-why-you…

    • This phone is supported and it won't be blocked. I tested it with 3498.

  • +1

OS update on Motorola phones is crap and this is a downgrade from the G84.

  • +5

$150 Android phone can do 90hz screen while $1,600 iPhone 16 Plus stuck on 60hz…

    • +3

Bought this 2 week ago bigw deal as a work phone. Screen is surprisingly better then my iPhone 15 pro max and can’t stopping using it!

  • G85 not dual sim right?

    • +1

      nano+esim

  • any reason to get the A55 over this?

  • +4

I have this phone. Been using since August. No complaints. Photos are good but if you pixel peep you'll be disappointed. Sometimes taking photos can be laggy, especially if you're trying to take several pics in quick succession, so you need to be patient. Camera is good for portraits, scenery still life. Action shots will likely disappoint.

But the battery life is super great and will easily last one day, especially if you're not constantly watching videos or playing games.

Does all the other things most other phones do.

Not affected by the 3g shut down.

    Yeah, no complaints really.

  • G85 In indoor at night with lightings eg shops, restaurants, photo colour is too vivid even in "original: mode. anyone know how to reduce?

  • Would there come another campaign for G84 as well as happened before? Keen to buy one!

    • Not a bad phoneif this price when released 3 years ago, but now pretty weak cpu and not many more security

updates into next year. Most likely no more OS update past this current Android 14 if that matters, and only

18W charging bit slow in 2024/2025.

  • +2

I've been a fan of the G8x series. I've owned two of them. But they've now lost me with the Edge screen. I stopped buying Samsung way back when they had all their phones with them. It's just a pointless "feature" that makes it's harder to put a screen protector on, and the screen is more vulnerable without an edge to protect against knocks. Pass

  • -1

    Need 12GB + esim in that price….

    • this is esim

  • OW price beat brought it down to $274.79

  • +1

I am worried that Motorola will no longer make phones that have a stereo jack and an SD Card slot.

My current phone still works well so I don't need one now, but I've already missed out on the G84 clearances. The Edge 50 looks crap with only 4300 mah, no slot no jack.

    What to do.
