If you are calling it a a successor, you should really add the downgrades.
    - no FM radio.
    - no headphone socket.
    - silly rounded-edge screen.

    • +32

Be grateful is still takes a microSD card!

      • +7

Be greatful ? Maybe if these phone companies stop playing musical chairs , you might have something worth keeping.

    • +37

Definition of the word successor from Cambridge dictionary:

someone or something that comes after another person or thing

        • -7

Rounded edges is definitely plus, easier to handle
Does anyone still use wired headsets?

          • +2

@ujwols: In answer to your question about wireless headsets, yes, wired still appear to be in demand and a lot of people talk about this as a benefit of the g54. Idk why anyone would use them but there ya go. It's a thing ppl seem to still want, even though USBc variants exist.

            • +2

@16k-zx81: Because many Bluetooth headsets don't sync dialogue properly when streaming movies etc.

              • +2

                @Wardaddy: With bluetooth 5, it's not the handset, it's your headphone's processor that's lagging.

            • @16k-zx81: Because many Bluetooth headsets don't sync dialogue properly when streaming movies etc.

            • +3

@16k-zx81: It's a thing people what because almost everyone has a number of wired headphones in their drawer that they don't see the need to throw out. Sure, they could buy a $15 usb-c adapter…But if there are people who still want FM radio, then there will be people wanting headphone socket for the next 20 years or more

            • @16k-zx81: I use them because my higher quality music headphones are wired. From memory, when I was researching headphones I read that bluetooth can never be as high quality as wired. I'm happy to be proven wrong by someone who has more expertise in this area!

          • @ujwols: I find wired handy as I don't need to think if it's charged or not, esp for short sessions. For exercise sessions, BT.

PS pet hate, snagging wired earbuds on things/arms and having them violently jerked from your ears

        • +1

So the use of that term is still wrong in this context.

          No it isn't.

          How is it not

someone or something that comes after another person or thing

      • +5

by that definition the shi!t I took this morning is the successor to this deal

        • +12

Exactly, and I bet it also had rounded edges.

      • the wording was "The successor to OzBargain's favourite phone", then stumo is free to interpret "Ozbargain's favorite phone" with the context he provided.

        • +1

          Don't even bother lol.

    • +36

      Curved screen is a dealbreaker.

      • +1

Agree, would have bought it for my wife otherwise.
I had the S7 with the curved screen, didn't like it. Given that most people use a phone case, it's redundant at best

        • +1

s7edge screen is terrible design :(

      • +3

I got this phone a few days ago, changing from a Poco x3. I didn't even notice the curved edges. They don't bother me. It is much lighter and thinner than the Poco. I have to say that I am yet to find anything that it does better than the old phone ! But it will continue to work next week unlike the Poco !

        • Coming from a Poco X3 Pro 256GB, while I'm not big on the curved screen and I could live without the headphone socket it's the 8GB/128GB holding me back when for less $ got the G84 12GB/256GB for the missus not so long ago (if I'd known about the 3g emergency calling blacklisting, would have got another for myself at the time too)

    • +4

      G54 is Ozbargain's favorite instead of G84

It looks like it will be the same this generation as well

      G55 > G85.

      • Why? Every spec is much better in G85.

        • +6

Just ozbargainers losing their minds over a curved screen and throwing out all logic lol. This is arguably the best budget phone you can buy.

          • @bert-lifts: yeah, great screen, etc, for me only downside is bluetooth 5.1, thought new phone would have had 5.3 , or at least 5.2, especially with more people using earbuds, and airtags that want to be always connected. might have a look at the fusion 50 edge, also on special at $430.

          • +3

@bert-lifts: No we are not financially supporting this stupid trend of curved edge screens again

      • Oh yeah, saw G55 @ JB & G75 is coming.

Impact of discounting on all models, including G54 & G84 ?

How many people who bought a phone in 2024 will use it as their MAIN-phone in their 3rd-yr-of-ownership: 2yrs + ?d

    • +6

I've been Bluetooth headphones exclusively for a decade or so, and dabbled for a while before that too as far back as using a lil Sony wireless Jack Bauer style earphone thing with my PSP Go. I also haven't listened to the radio for more than like 20 minutes total in the last 2 years since leaving metro.

      HOWEVER

Less options is never a good thing.

      • +15

I thought Bluetooth headphones were good… Like I have them, it's no issues…

…until I switched back to wired. SO much easier to manage, the sounds also seems to be clearer, also can go lower volume. No BS pairing or repairing hassle. Just plug in, clear and quiet sound.

        • +1

I had the opposite issue a couple times lately. Was playing Terminator a month or two back and I was at the end and I love the end, the score kicks in, the last like half an hour of that game are awesome, so I went to get headphones, missus was doing something on her laptop, baby was asleep, dope, I'm not being antisocial or neglectful. Had to go find an ancient pair in the draw with the AUX port, then find the damn cord, then the cord was touchy as shit and had to be put in at the right angle, was a whole goddamn thing, sucked ass.

My corded TDK's I got on clearance from Dick Smith a dozen or so years back though, goddamn, stuff of legend.

          • +2

@TheDukeOfNukem: Now imagine it was an ancient Bluetooth headphone… Wouldn't even have charge to be turned on

            • +1

@Some Random Guy: Batteries are so weird. I have some headphones I've left for years that still have plenty of juice. Then you have the Wii U tablet I charged the other day fully and left sitting in the drawer unused, already flat. Battery isn't failing or anything, it's always been like that, they just keep draining even when not in use. Making sure your batteries drain as little as possible when not in use really should be a priority for manufacturers tbh.

But yeah, you're right. That being said, a long charge cord hanging from my ear is about as convenient as a long AUX cord.

        • If you have an old pair of Bose QC 35's there is literally no hi-res music option on bluetooth. I can't recall the version of bluetooth, but wired always sounds better on these headphones.

      • +1

If you still want to use your wired heaphones, the Apple USB-C Audio adapter is great. Of course, being Apple it is $$$ … no, wait, $15 shipped.

        https://www.apple.com/au/shop/product/MW2Q3FE/A/usb-c-to-35-…

        • +3

Not me brother, my phone has a 3.5mm jack and I've not used it even once

        • +2

That's probably $0.67 including shipping from China / AliExpress.

        • +1

The apple USB C to aux is objectively shit.

Apple puts their brand on the shittiest cables known to man. Handful of people in my life who run apple gear have had to buy cables many times over so the 15 bucks adds up.

For 15 bucks a cable better be able to double as a shoelace, rope, floss, etc

          • @Some Random Guy: 'cable'? You seem to have no clue what you are talking about. This is a DAC, for a start.

          • @Some Random Guy: The apple usc dacs are probably their best product in my opinion. Great audio quality for money. I use it for my pc.

      • -1

        "Fewer" options

    • +6

You are spot on. That's why, I bought G84 when I had chance with JB HI-FI for $269 using perks. Because I knew the G85 with curved screen was coming.

    • +14

Who listens to FM radio though, that's a PLUS really.

Any time theres less chance of kyle and jacki o being near you, take it as a win

      • +3

No idea since got apps for live radio too… bizarre espesh when data is pretty cheap anyway.

        • Am in HK right now. They have 50gb for $30HKD. Thats $6 dollaroos. You can believe that I'm abusing the shit out of that. And hotel wifi is 300/300. So much for being a first world industrialized nation huh? Kinda think we gave ourselves that medal rather than having the merit.

          • @Whiplash: the 50gb for $30hk what's the deal on that?

do you have to provide personal details?

        • +1

Lots of people that go to the footy. The apps are delayed and it makes a massive difference.

      • +3

Removing a feature is a positive?

      • +3

It's good for niche situations where it's a local FM signal. Apps won't have it. Some sporting events and drive in cinemas can have local FM signals still

        • +7

See this guy gets it, again.

I listen to the local FM radio trackside for motorsports through noise blocking headphones. Otherwise you can't hear anything. And there ain't no app providing it, not 100% live. And streams (if there even is one) have a 60 second delay etc.

You need a 3.5mm jack l because that provides the FM antenna for the FM radio in the phone. And I can still hear calls and notifications when they come through.

      • And just remember, to use the FM radio you have to plug in some wired headphones, because that acts as the antenna. The only time I would use the FM feature would be to listen to the footy commentary while at a game. But I guess I could just bring a mini FM radio for those occasions.

        • +4

Wouldn't it be nice if every phone doubled as the mini FM radio, wouldn't need to bring another phone sized object to block pockets!

      • +2

Yes but it's a "No FM Radio" feature, not a "No Kyle and Jacki O' feature. I listen to lots of FM radio. Not on my phone, though. And not Kyle and Jacki O.

    • +5

Be grateful. iPhone 16 Plus (same size as this) costs $1800 for 256GB storage with no micro SD. Also has a 60hz screen.

      • -3

And ? People are prepared to buy premium . What's your point .

        • +4

I think his point is that Apple buyers are the opposite of OzB'ers.

          • @Wardaddy: I doubt that , especially with all comments associated with iPhone deals/postings

      • +4

Just because apple throws shit at a wall and people eat it doesn't mean we should be grateful to eat slightly less shit thrown at the wall by another company…

    • +2

i can stand the 1st 2 items but rounded edge is just soooo stupid…

    • +8

No 3.5mm jack? Wow. I switched to Motorola because they were the only ones still featuring it, so I was going to remain loyal to them. That is a huge loss.

      • -5

Wireless bro. You can get Anko wireless headphones for only $20 at Kmart.

    • 50% less storage

    • +2

Also physical dual SIM no more. Physical+ esim now

    • +1

I have had no issues with my S20 + 5G and its rounded edges since early 2020.
Still waiting for something to replace it with since the battery is slowly starting ro not last a day now

    • fm radio…lol

    • The first two of those barely rate a mention these days but certainly the rounded screen is divisive.

    • To be fair I just had to check if my pixel 8a had a 3.5mm jack because I've never tried to use on with it.

I think it's less concerning now for a mobile, although still necessary for a laptop.

  • +14

Had a curved screen once before, never again.

    • +3

What's wrong with a curved screen?

      • +8

As some of the other comments have said, there are benefits to the curved screen, mainly the phone is easier to handle. But for the negatives; I've struggled to find a screen protector that doesn't peel up and the side swiping can be a bit finicky. (Note the phone comes with a l factory fitted screen protector but I was silly enough to try to replace it with a glass one)

Overall I've gotten used to the curved screen but generally wouldn't look for it on a new phone if I could avoid it.

        • +1

Yeah, was mainly the screen protectors for me. Forever having that crappy border where it didn't stick down and stuff getting in there. Didn't keep that phone in a case though so maybe when a case is also fitted it isn't too bad.

          • @hambuger: The case on mi X2 Pro peels off the screen protector. So having both is another negative of the curved screen.
Since I am here I will say that in my opinion curved screens are partly a gimmick. And screen size may not truthfully represent the viewing area compared to a flat screen. And to add to the pile, another negative for me is that selecting text or boxes that are close to the edge can be very difficult and in poorly designed apps or websites it becomes impossible. The X2 Pro does have a very sharp curve so I presume others may not be as bad.

          • @hambuger: For everyone using a screen protector, have you tried not using one in modern times?

I use a quality Spigen case, and no screen protector. I think thats all you need unless you're using a fragile phone like an iPhone.
I drop my phone far more than I should, and haven't used a sceen protector for 9 years. Never had a scratch or crack since using this brand of case without a protector.
HTC M8, Pixel, Pixel 4XL, Galaxy S23. All scratch and crack free, hundreds of drops onto tiles and concrete.

        • +3

Ive given up on glass screen protectors on phones, after finding a type of screen protector called "hydrogel".

They are plastic, apply easily and seem to self heal small scratches.

I dont know exactly how to describe it, but besides the occasional rubbery feel, it feels more similar to glass than plastic to me. It certainly doesnt feel as bad as plastic screen protectors.

I've grown to prefer these, since they don't shatter as easy compared to glass screen protectors and don't scuff at all like plastic ones

          • +1

@Butt Scratcher: Sounds like a reasonable solution for a curved edge screen phone 👍

The tempered glass screen protector on a flat screen phone does have the advantage though of being a sacrificial piece
that if it gets cracked from accidently dropping the phone; may end up saving the screen beneath it. I've had two potential
screen breakages of my S10e saved from a glass screen protector that's much cheaper and easier to replace than the screen is.

  • +16

Excellent value for money but a curved screen is horrible.

  • +1

Is this (much) better than the Samsung A35 being sold for $299 at Amaysim?
    Thanks

    • Amaysim needs 2 recharges to get it unlocked( I was told). May not be a great deal if you are not amaysim customer.

      • +4

Their Samsung A35 comes unlocked. I just got one (for $99, because they gave me a further $200 credit due to my 3g burner phone becoming obsolete). I popped my Woolworths (Telstra) SIM in it when it arrived and it worked. Pretty happy with the deal.

        • +2

That's great to hear. Can I just buy online with one month recharge and swap.my Sim right away?

Edit: got it. Just read thread on Samsung phone deal. I think for $329 Samsung A35 is awesome deal.

          • @CrypticM: It is a good deal. The A35 is a good upgrade for my ageing A52.

            • @DefconOne: Yep. Bought A35 yesterday. Was about to buy this G85 to replace by broken G84. But looks like A35 is much better.

    • Samsung A35 being sold for $299 at Amaysim is better.
4 years OS updates and 5 years security updates as well.

    • 6gb vs 8gb RAM. Samsung bloatware vs motorola relatively plain android. The samsung probably has a better camera and support though.

      • Lol. Try using G84( before version, horrible implemtation of RAM). Motorola is no less in bloatware. Samsung came long way in UI. it's much better now.

  • +2

The G84 is a better value. Never repurchase a Moto crappy software support.

  • +7

    Curved Screen - No Thanks

    • 33W charger and case included

      • I don't see that on the BigW description.

      • Yes mine did come with a 33W charger and case
