It's a Motorola. Don't expect amazing photos in the night… Or an amazing camera at the end of the day.

      • +6

so it's amazing at the start of the day?

      • +1

        $296.10….

        • Poco F1 was about 300 AUD shipped when released some 2019? (bought mine from aliexpress)

I challenge someone to find a phone like the Poco F1 but for 2024

Top specs for the time - just didn't have premium materials and the camera was good not great (but with some mods (using gcam)) it was very good.

$296, that's not pennies and a comparatively low price doesn't necessarily justify a product (otherwise an old 3g phone would be a sweet deal)

      • Apparently the new Edge 50s have decent cameras even in low night according to Gsmarena. Also, they have at least 3 years of software support now.

        • Still the lagging of saving the photo before you can take another shot, giving you some pain.

    • +2

You can install GCam mod instead and live happily

    • I have this model in olive green. I've tried both original app and gcam. I prefer the original app. Photos in daylight are good but don't pixel peep, ie try to zoom in on your phone screen. It is what it is. Do not expect iPhone or pixel quality and the photos are fine. It is laggy sometimes when on 2 x zoom (digital) but not always. This is good for stills, portrait and scenery. Not good for movement or action shots. Hope this helps someone.

      • Yeah, my wife will complaint continuously if the camera function is lagging or unacceptable quality. Trying to avoid that. Hehehe

        • Lol haha! Yeah maybe not for her then. But yes, I'm just sharing my experience with the g85 :).

  • +3

Pretty good value. No need to consider those cheap Chinese phones that were popular years ago.

    • +3

      Motorola is Chinese duh!

      • +4

I think he means no name branded Chinese phones

        • +3

          Umidigi?

    • +3

      Elephone?

      • +2

I miss those days waiting for my girl to call me on the elephone

        • I told her to kiss me thru the elephone

  • It says $329 on the catalogue? @shxhshzhz

    • +3

To get the price in the title ($296.10), you need to use one of the coupon codes listed in the deal, which will take an extra 10% off the price you see in the catalogue.

The coupon codes are the monthly 10% off Everyday Extra discount for BIG W's website, but all you need to do is link an Everyday Rewards account to your BIG W account, then use the coupon code at the online checkout. There should be no need to actually have an active Everyday Extra subscription on your linked Everyday Rewards account in order to claim this discount (but my understanding is that you can only claim each monthly coupon code once per account).

EDIT: I have added most of this information to the deal description.

The only pro is Olive color, if you don't care about exterior - just take G84

  • how's the fingerprint reader on this? the g54 is excellent with its side mount but this phone uses under display optic and they're never great from previous experience

    • +1

I've owned it for a few months and no issues with both face id and finger print scanner.

    • I have the edge30 neo with in-screen fingerprint and it's been fine. Samsung ones are hit and miss IME.

  • Under $300. Instant asset write off. Nice.

  • Does anyone know if any of the Motorolas can use a monitor via the USB-C? Have a feeling I'm stuck on Samsung S series forever for that feature (and Dex).

    • +1

They have a setting on them for monitor output, but I have not tested (just unboxed yesterday). Bloody bought 2 at $380 each before this deal at jb hifi then got the price matched to $337… I don't think I can go back and do that AGAIN to get this price! lol

      • Only save an extra $8 anyways. As BigW has this for $329

    • Not through the cable. These only have USB2.0. You need to buy the Edge series to get video through USB port. I have screen casted my phone before but it's pretty average.

  • Does this version allow 2 phyiscal sim cards? Looking at the manual, it comes in 2 variants, one that supports 1 esim and 1 physical sim and 1 that supports 2 physical sims (unsure if this supports esim).

    • Unsure about the number of physical sims, not more than 2 but am out atm so no way to check. This phone supports esim.

    • I have this phone and I have Telstra E-Sim, and Globe PH Physical SIM and at the same time 1TB micro SD card. So 2 Sims 'and' SD was a feature I wanted and not Dual SIM 'or' SD

      • So is it not possible to use this with 2 physical sims? Both my main and secondary numbers are with providers that don't support esim.

        • NO, ITS NOT POSSIBLE

  • -1

    cmos sensor: G84 1/1.5 vs G85 1/2
    what a upgrade -_-!!

  • Is the camera better than the G82? Worst android phone camera I've had, G9+ was better. My G82 not even that old and considering upgrading purely because of aweful pics even daylight

  • Is this one better or the Samsung A35?

    • This one has 8GB RAM and Dual SIM. A35 only has 6GB RAM which may slow down the phone when you have a few programs, but has better screen (Samsung OLED is just better) and longer software support.

      • Make sense! which one you reco as seems like both of them are on same price approx

        • +1

Basic User = Samsung A35 as it has longer software support. (Also, it has better re-sell value if you decide to sell it later.)

For people who likes to run a lot of apps at the same time, G85 may have better performance.

    • A35 only single Sim

But only 100 with amaysim voucher

      • I do not have amaysim Voucher. How Can I get it?

  • Does this phone have the same issues the G54 have regards to OS stability and bugs? like random restarts, missing new message/call notifications etc?

  • There is going to be quite a few people , looking tomorrow

  • +1

Bought the G85 last month to finally replace my 1st gen Moto G XT1033 from 2014 (still has the original battery from the factory and works fine for snapping photos and music playback) which've finally retired due to the impending final 3G shutdown in a few day's time.

  • Price is currently $399, applying the OCT code only gives me a 10% discount (Everyday Extra 10% off). I am logged on to my BIG W account and have my Everyday Rewards account linked. What am I missing?

    • +1

Original price shows $329 ( for me) pick up in store.
Then apply Oct code is now $ 296.10

  • I can't seem to get the discounted price. It says "Sign in or Link Rewards Card to use code"

    • +1

You must be a rewards member [ EDR]
      To get the lowest price.

      • My rewards account is linked.

  • Get a g84 with more storage

  • Had Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge…. not edging again nah no thank you

    • Edging feels amazing

      • rather not

  • So i am guessing you can get another 10% off with monthly discount you get with woolworths subscription?

  • Does anybody have a full list of phones that will be compatible once 3G is shut off? I’m with Optus and this phone isn’t listed on the volte list? Very confused on what to buy..

    • Any new phones currently bought from the likes of JB, officeworks etc will be fine.

  • Will this be an upgrade for Samsung Galaxy S21 (mainly in terms of camera and performance)?

    • +1

It would not be. You'll get better battery life and a better display on the newer G85, but performance wise the S21 would probably still beat it and I would say the camera would be better too. The S21 also has wireless charging which this does not.

      • +1

Exactly my thoughts too. Got the S21 for $250 in Facebook market and will continue use for another few months then.. I think in general, a 2-3 year old flagship model will almost always surpass the capabilities of a latest low-mid range phone (of course including durability and reliability aspects) and probably be cheaper at used market as well.

  • Buying a new phone for teenage son.
Would this phone be an upgrade/downgrade or on par with an iPhone 12 mini?

    • +1

If he likes apple, it will be downgrade regardless of what you buy unless its apple.

My iphone 12 mini still better than this IMO. Returned my G85. Battery on 12 mini does suck compared to other apple phones though.

      • He's always had apple but I cant justify the price for calls/texts and snapchat.
You're right. He complains the battery life isn't good.
        Thanks for your opinion.

  • $less when you price match at officeworks. If they will do it. And it does come with a charger and a flimsy silicone cover.
I didn't notice that it didn't have an FM radio but I have never used the one on my old phone anyway.

  • That’s why I keep my old phones , SIM card not required to use fm radio ap, the headphones wires act as an aerial.
Put the wires down your back so they don’t get caught up in your arms when running.

  • Genuinely curious, why Samsung A35 ( from amaysim offer) isn't a better deal than this?

I have G84 and it's horrible in response times. Camera is useless most of the times. ( I was using S20 plus before).

    • +1

Is it fair to compare this phone to a flagship?

      • May be yes , as A35 is available for $329( almost close)

  • +1

Cant decide between this and A35. I need to get 2 for parents

    • +1

What are they coming from? If samsung or motorola, stick with what they are coming from. Being able to use it easily and being familiar with the software is most important.

If camera is important, then Samsung. Battery wise, Motorola is better. Motorola has more RAM, but I think performance wise the Samsung processor wins out. Motorola is a little brighter and thinner bezels, although I think the Samsung OLED might be preferred. Samsung has better water resistant rating and newer bluetooth. Motorola has FM radio if that is any use to them.

Do they need a fast charger? Motorola includes it, Samsung does not, so that is another cost to consider if you have to spend $20 or $30 on a charger for the Samsung. Also this Moto G85 includes a case, I don't believe the Galaxy A35 does. Another small cost to consider.

      • except no headphone jack, so no FM on this Moto.

        • Oops fixed, thanks.

  • Soon these will have no indicator stalks… Wait…. that's something else.

  • Waiting for $199…

  • Wish I bought a second G84 when it was $244. That was also 12G/256GB.
Got one for the missus but seems I need a new phone because my Poco X3 Pro can't do emergency calls with no SIM on 4G :/

Any suggestions for something similar spec to G84 but with wireless charging too?

    • +1

I think you will need to spend a bit extra to get wireless charging, maybe keep an eye out for a deal on this. Or maybe an older model Samsung Galaxy S, eg S23 came up yesterday for $539 or flagship Motorola from 2023.

      • Yeh did have a look at the Edge. Have to look at current Xiaomi models too and see if any have wireless.
Hoping to find something under $400.

Have a spare G54 for now but will go to the kids in the new year for high school, since all our old phones we had planned to use all have the same no emergency 4g issue.

        • +1

I didn't miss the Wireless charging as much as I thought on my G84, as the battery lasts so long, compared to the Pixel I came from (which broke). Didn't need to top up during the day and I just charge it once every night or every second night if I didn't use it much, using the optimised charging feature.

          • @hamza23: Yeh good point. My Poco struggles to get through the day now and thought wireless charging would be handy in the car etc.
Missus on the G84 now is usually only down to around 50% by end of day (and the charging to 80% overnight with final top up charge in the morning is great to preserve the battery) so it's probably something I can live without really.

  • I'll always be "old school" where it comes to mSD & 3.5 jack. I want to have loads of my own music/videos on mSD and I do not want yet another device (cordless earbuds) to have to charge/keep track of. I'm still using my Dick Smith corded earbuds I bought when they still had B&M shops in WA (10 years ago?). They fit great, sound great, can answer calls…all for the clearance price of $5- lol. I bought four pairs and I'm still using the first set. Also got these to keep them snag-free.

Keeps rejecting the code, tells me to sign in despite being already signed in. Help…

    • Try another browser/clear cache/incognito mode? I've had an issue before with Everyday login and cleared cache worked for me.
Maybe check your Everyday account no one else in the fam used the code?

  • +1

CHECK. Please contact your service provider or handset vendor, as your device may not be fully supported when 3G closes comes up with my G85 5G's IMEI with the phone updated to the latest system update.

Saw this post on the Motorola forum on the Lenovo site-not much of a help:
    https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Moto-g85-5G/Moto-G-85-not-compa…

    • Hasn't Vodaphone turned off 3g already if not we will know tomorrow when the shit hits the fan. I will be in the same boat except that I'm with Telstra. Keep us posted

    • So I can't confidently buy this for use with Telstra?

      • Mine is working with Boost which is Telstra

        • Did you get any of the warning messages? It shut down today

  • I remember reading somewhere that Motorola phones emit more radiation.
