Garmin Forerunner 955 Running Watch $499 Delivered @ Rebel Sport

680

Cheapest it's been, pretty good price. Arguably better than the latest generation if you don't want an AMOLED screen

Fenix 6 pro still going strong đź’Ş, cant convince myself an upgrade :(

    • +7

Charging port is starting to fail on my partners Fenix 6s pro. Called Garmin, they don't do repairs but can offer you a new unit heavily discounted.

I got a 255 for $400 and there is a big quality difference between this range and Fenix. A lot more metal on the Fenix.

We paid $548 for her Fenix 6s pro.

    • +1

Same boat! I'd love a new battery, a torch like on the 7 pro, and also a touchscreen for map nav. It's still such good value I can't justify a new Fenix/fr

      • +4

Agreed, people rave about the torch but when the F7 Pro sale price is $1k hard to justify spending an extra $500 for a torch.

    • Me too but it's 4 yrs old now. I think we might need to work on our convincing skills.

Seems quite a few Garmin Watch deals dropping - new models coming?

    • +8

Well black friday usually hosts a banger deal for Garmin watches.

    • +1

Most people don't expect anymore this year.

This is already a gen old in the Forerunner line (although the 965 was quite flawed).

      More just clearing old lines.

      • +1

Why is the 965 flawed? Just curious.

        • +5

The design of the bezel makes it really prone to damaging (the screen sits above the bezel essentially. Something not seen in any other garmin smartwatch). It's largely considered their worst design yet in the community.

          • @Peekay: Would that make the 955 a more viable option?

            • @KangaDrew: The 965 has an AMOLED screen. If thats important to you the 955 probably isn't a great alternative.

  • +4

My 935 is going strong, but this is a great price…..

    • That!
Hard to justify something else yet…

    • so true… no matter what I tried to do it just won't die :P

I would love the map/navi feature on the 965 though

    • Any tips on replacing the watch band. Bought something on Monday from Amazon but the screwdrivers are useless. As are the bunnings ones I own!

      • I don't have the 955 but it should be quick release?

Usually just required a pin/paper clip to release.

    • I've just upgraded to this from the 935. There are so many more features now like training readiness, sleep score and workout suggestions that I reckon are worth the jump. 935 was a fine watch, but its quite dated in the line up if you are working out every day (or even twice a day!).

  • instinct 2x solar in red $535 amazon au via germany

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Garmin-Instinct-Solar-Flame-Red/dp…

shipping is who knows when if its the same as the black one i've ordered tho. estimate is basically "by xmas maybe?"

  • Awesome price - highly recommend this watch, very happy with it so far

  • +1

Agree this a great price, unfortunately I just bought the 965 because I need to see the screen when running and AMOLED works best in that regard- but bummed it cost me $500 more.

    • +4

965 is awesome though. you won't be disappointed. i'm getting a month battery life on mine.

      • +2

Yeah I am loving it - had it for 2 weeks now and coming off 5 years with an Apple Watch. I thought I might regret ditching the AW but I don’t regret the change one bit. I realise I was blinded by fanboy propaganda. Cannot believe how liberating it is not having to hardly think about charging and the smartwatch features of FR work just fine for me.

        • +2

          Really depends on use case.
For sports tracking i prefer Garmin.
Apple Watch is really much better for Health…hr, sleep tracking etc

  • +3

These have been hovering around $350 on the used market recently, so $500 brand new is a great deal. It's basically a Fenix 7 with a plastic (i.e. lighter) body. >2 week battery life, tonnes of features both as a smartwatch and a fitness tracker, physical buttons for controls and a touchscreen (that you can disable), reflective screen that doesn't look like a smartphone on your wrist, highly recommend.

  • Just got the Venu 3 from Amazon Japan,
    955 or Venu 3?

    • +8

Venu 3 has an Amoled screen so if that matters to you stick with the Venu. This has a MIP screen - pros are excellent battery life (always on) and easy to see outside, but the contrast and brightness will look terrible next to your Venu.

They target the Venu series as their more entry level smartwatch/fitness watch combo.

Forerunner series (as the name suggests) is really targetted at runners/bikeriders.Whilst it still has basically all the features of the top of the line Fenix series it's nowhere near as rugged or durable.
This particular model is basically a lightweight Fenix 7 (specs wise sits between F7 and F7 Pro).

The Fenix series is their main top of the line/adventurer type watch - the best battery life, most durable etc. Very hefty on the wrist though.

  • +2

I got a 265 a couple months ago. Wasn't sure about the AMOLED screen but I'm sold on it. Really looks good! But this is a super solid deal for a great watch.

    • +1

Same, love my 265 from the rebel deal a couple of months ago. The battery life is amazing and the Amoled display is stunning!

      • Same here and happy with the 265.

I tried both the 955 (solar) and the 265 and also think that the 265 fells way less chunky on the wrist. I think it’s just a small amount less when looking on the spec sheet but the 955 looked and felt way bigger / poking out a lot.

Otherwise I would have went with the 955 normal or solar.

  • +1

This is great! Thanks OP! My Fenix 6 has been shitting itself for the past year, with Garmin only offering a 2nd hand replacement for $400

  • very tempting. any chance the fenix7 gets close to this price on black friday? id prefer a more durable watch

    • +1

I bought an F7 Pro SS for $899 from a recent ozbargain post - $999 then $100 off at eBay (love it BTW)

Given it only dropped to $999 most places about a month ago I don’t think it will fall much further by BF - maybe to $800 at a push with some voucher stacking/ cashback? But I would doubt it will come anywhere close to this.

    • Bought a 7x solar for $770($700 after my discounted jb hifi gcs) just before the 8 was announced.

  • +1

Very very very tempting! I am contemplating waiting on the 965 though and a good Black Friday sale..anyone got some more insight what a Black Friday deal may see it come down to roughly?

  • I need a watch with a reliable heart monitor. Has anyone had the opportunity to try out heart rate monitor on both 955 and 965? And able to provide feedback on these devices. Thanks

    • +6

Get a chest strap. That's most reliable & accurate. Optical HR sensors have inherent limitations.

    • +2

The 955/965 uses the Elevate 4 sensor. The fenix 7 Pro and 8 use the Elevate 5.

Both are quite good actually (I have a 7 pro and the readings are impressively accurate) but if you are really looking for accuracy, get a dedicated strap then just get whatever Garmin best supports your use case and budget.

  • I would jump on this if this was solar. Solar was $599 on Amazon until last week.

    • +3

Solar makes zero difference (I have one).

Additionally, 8% off rebel gift cards for AGL members makes this even cheaper. I feel like I saw 10% off rebel gift cards here the other day too.

      • +1

The solar is arguably worse on the 955 as it makes the screen a little more washed out/harder to see.

I think the outside solar ring makes the watch look a little better though then the non-solar version.

        • Yeah I don’t mind how the solar ring looks and have had a few people comment that it was solar from across the room surprisingly. I only went with it as it was cheaper than non-solar the other week.

  • +1

    I have an FR235.

    Any reason to upgrade?

    • +1

yes if you are a serious runner running multiple times a week and training for an event or competition.

if you are just a casual runner/walker, no.

235 isn't bad, but 900 series are the best.

  • +2

You can stack for a further saving. The NRMA benefits have a 10$ discount on a 200$ gift card. That is further 25$ off the already discounted 499 bringing it down to $476
I'm sure there are ways (other than NRMA) to get a rebel gift card at a lower price?

  • Can also price match Kogan/Dick Smith which have it for $494

  • Anyone have tips on picking a Garmin watch? I'm getting sick of needing to charge my Apple Watch daily so had a look on Garmin's website and was just totally overwhelmed by their massive range.

    • +1

      https://www.reddit.com/r/Garmin/comments/umk683/how_to_selec…

Good summary on the range. But you need to work out which activities you most likely do and want to track. How much of the smart watch capabilities you willing to lose and then your budget.

    • +1

it depends on what you do mostly:

some examples i can think of:

      running = forerunner

      triathlon = enduro or epix

      vivoactive = stay active

      golf = approach

      outdoors = instinct

fashionable similar to apple watch = venu or vivomove

      • Fenix?

        • +1

does everything, it's heavy, it's chunky, but durable.

          more outdoorsy i would say.

          • @Hugh G Rection: Fenix looks and feels more premium than forerunner. I got the forerunner 955 solar to replace my fenix 5 Pro… forerunner is much lighter, but looks cheaper.

            • +2

@Ntense: fenix is definitely more durable as its metal vs plastic.
i ran a marathon and did a triathlon with a fenix, and that was tough. later in the run i felt like i was running with 1 barbell, lol.
it was more enjoyable with my FR965, i didn't even notice it on my wrist as it is so much lighter.
I only use mine for training and races. I have a collection of different watches that i need to rotate through. i blame ozbargain for forcing me to buy too many watches, lol.

      • I do Gym and HIIT, not running. So just something to track workouts. I tend to prefer the chunky look as I'm a big lad. Preferably something with same ECG/Heart functionality as the Apple Watch. As for smart watch capabilities only certain notifications are useful, don't care about the rest of what Apple features I may be missing.

So with all of the above… which would you recommend?
        Please and thank you!

        • Perhaps the Instinct as the cheaper option, or Fenix as premium. I've found my Fenix 5 not exceptionally good at guessing gym workout sets, but for HR tracking it's perfect.
