MG 3 Excite $22,990 Drive Away (Save $2,000) @ MG Motor

211

The all-new MG 3 is now discounted for the second time since launching in June this year across all models including the new hybrids.

This means the entry Excite model is now just $22,990 drive away.

It's a 1.5L 4cyl with decent standard spec and a low 6.0L/100km fuel consumption though it did recently score a 3 star ANCAP rating. Still a very cheap car for those looking for a runabout.

    Pretty pretttayyy exciting

    • Depends if you actually get a second hand car that is well looked after. Also have you looked at 2nd hand price of Toyota car? They are ridiculously high. At this price point you'll probably get a Yaris with 100k+ on the miles or a 7+ years old

      10 year warranty on this

      • +10

That doesn’t mean there won’t be problems.

I value my time more than how long it would take trying to force a dealer to complete work under warranty. Plus the time waiting for them to ship in parts. Not having a car whilst dealing with all this over and over again.

        • +3

second this. sourcing parts has been unbearably painful for my current car. I also remember striking a conversation with a tesla owner who had a nice car and it turns out his model X was in repairs for a few months lol. Maybe not the same of other automotive brands but I imagine its long relative to what it was like in the past

        • Wonder how many warranty claims they blame on "wear and tear"

      • -3

I take it if you give us 10 years warranty and 10 years free service

    • +3

There are some people that just don't want a used car. They don't want to deal with no warranty, money-owing, stolen, "lemons"(I said what I said), etc.

      • +5

In that case, just get a Suzuki Swift Hybrid. Bit more expensive but Suzuki has a reputation for being fuel-efficient, reliable and bulletproof.

    3 star ANCAP rating

    Not worth the risk.

    Results here

    • +7

ANCAP is kinda bs now, if a car doesn't have lane assist and all that annoying stuff that I turn off it gets low stars even if crash rating is good.

      • +5

Next year, to get 5 stars a car will need automatic emergency calling from the car itself when a crash is detected. Which will require mobile connectivity in the vehicle itself.

I think ANCAP is trying to spread the ratings. So we don’t have every vehicle getting 5 stars. 5 stars will be reserved for luxury vehicles.

      • +4

Even if you look beyond the safety assist rating, adult occupant protection is a mere 72% which is way worse than other comparable vehicles.

    • +1

      Not worth the risk.

I'd consider that an advantage, not having to reset a lot of advisories every time you get in the car would be great but impossible with a 5 rating.

  • -4

Seems like they will kick Honda Subaru and Nissan out of Australia market within 3 years. The Germans and Japanese are charging us too much for old technology cars.

    • +1

Because our emissions standards were (and still are to some extent) worse, they can dump their carbon polluters into our market.
I have been in this, and it's not a bad drive. Value for money it's quite good, and the ten year warranty is very appealing.

    • +2

I'm no expert but I'm not sure on this statement.

Even Stevie Wonder could see the quality that these cars don't have.

    • +4

How much do you get paid to post these? I want in

  • +10

3 star safety rating is a concern.

    • +2

A safety rating for the new Suzuki Swift in Australia is yet to be announced, but testing in Europe earlier this year returned a three-star score under comparable criteria to the MG 3's tests.

      They aren't the only ones.

    • +1

It looks like it lost most of the points in the
Safety assist category.. presumably because it doesn't have AEB reversing, so the car won't stop you from reversing over a pedestrian.

      • +2

Structural cabin integrity scores poorly too

  • -4

Rather 3 of these than one of those crappy Teslas

  • What are these like?

Noticing a few second hand but pretty new
Like less than typical lease period

Think we are gonna buy a tiggo 4

    • +2

All the car rental companies have offloaded them in favour of other cars. These spent more time in the shop than on roads.

According to the RBA inflation calculator $13,990 in 1998 is equivalent of $27,891 in 2023…

    These are great value.

Be interesting to see if they are as un-killable as those Hyundai Excel were, and if they spawn their own racing group in 20 years time.

    • +1

Having said that, I think if you are looking for a city car and can charge at home/work/regular shops, spend and extra 8k (or less for second hand) and get an MG4. It's bound to save you the price difference in 3 years if not less in servicing and petrol, and it's a bigger and better car

    • True on inflation calculator but COVID tax really (profanity) people in the arse.

Got my Cerato Sport in July 2020 for 21k driveway.

  • +5

Those Hyundai Excels were good though… these aren't really

    • Only time will tell if they hold up. They have 10 year warranties, which is impressive.

  • I rent cars a couple of times a year when I am in different cities and I usually think that cars are pretty good these days. I am not fussy. I recently rented a 2024 MG ZS (similar price to this car) and it was the most awful car that I have driven. I would stay well clear.

    • Yep, agreed. I rented a similar one too and would do anything in my power to not travel in an MG again.

My grandad used to tell me stories of how beautiful MG cars used to be though this felt cheap and nasty.

Would rather an old carola for safety, reliability and comfort.

My grandad used to tell me stories of how beautiful MG cars used to be though this felt cheap and nasty

My grandfather had one, dad used to tell me stories if how they'd have to stop at the top of the very steep hill ear the house because the radiator would boil over

    • i've heard a few of my mates say the same when they test drive their EVs. very lacklustre compared to BYD and Tesla

We have ZSTs at work - the dog slow head units, the backwards cruise control stalk (rotate up = distance control moves down the screen, toggle up\down for 5km speed increments\decrements, hold up\down to scroll in 1km speed increments\decrements - all of which is anathema to every other cruise control system I have used), the lock\unlock handles on the door handles that only work half the time, the fact that the only noise it makes is The Chime regardless of the problem (great fun when after we first got them a coworker didn't realise he was almost out of fuel because it just makes The Chime several times in a row when you turn it on to complain\inform you about various things), the boot that will randomly unlatch enough not to open but enough to make it make The Chime at you when driving because it thinks it's open and the fact that you often need to floor it to get it going from a standstill are all common complaints among the staff.

But, considering the price I'm paying for it ($0), I can say that for me, the price is right.

So wild you're getting downvoted for this comment. We recently rented an MG3 too and it was just a very cheaply made car all around. Struggled to get up to speed, felt like sitting in a metal box, the interior aged like milk. Granted it's a rental, the car couldn't have been older than 1 or 2 years but felt it was nearing its end of life.

There’s a lot of shills on here for certain brands of cars.

  • +5

Stay away from MG. They have no interest in protecting the brand or residual values. They will keep slashing prices especially with the new chinese entrants coming in 2025. In just one year since its launch in late 2023 the MG4 lost half its launch price in the used car market, imagine after 10 years when the warranty ends. Stick with Japanese cars that have better resale value.

    • +21

Not sure about others here, but I'm not buying a $22,000 car with 10 year warranty for resale value

      • It's basically a subscription car. The brand has been bought out and it's being ridden into the ground based on any remaining glory from the past.

      • Nor are you buying it for the warranty based on user experiences with the company.

    • -1

      💯

Cars are a tool, utility, depreciating asset, and for some people, a hobby. Unless you're buying something rare or exotic, don't expect to make a good return.

  • Flip the letters around…. MG <-> GM.
    Are they taking the piss?
    Automotive illuminati.

Doesn't really matter what badge is on it at this price does it? Bargain!

    • +3

I think MG comes from Morris Garage.

  • This really just makes the Tiggo 4 Pro look like even better value. Maybe if it was $22k for the hybrid model, or the MG5!

  • +1

I purchased MG HS last year due to low price. I am very happy with the car. First service was totally free, quick and staff was friendly. MG pilot is great convenience. I plan to change all our cars to MG.
