Trading in a phone is only worthwhile if there is a bonus.

    • could easily get more selling it on marketplace

  • Went there yesterday for the deal, was rejected due to recent cancelation

    • ?

Yes, you won’t be able to sign up any plans for about 6 months. Kind of black list.
Happened with me last year too, but was able to sign up after 6 months.

      • I’ve done five in last twelve months

        • Depends. Whenever they flag you.

  • Seeing as it's a partial refund of what you pay originally, does this mean the full $1200 counts towards credit card spend? .e.g 1200 points. When they do the partial refund, is that subtracted from points earning?

    • No points towards gift card. Not sure towards spend

      • I have no idea what I meant by my question, for some reason I thought there was a $1200 spend happening. I'll blame it on being knackered from just having done a kid's birthday party

        • You will have to pay a bill of $7xx, i guess that’s where you can earn card pts?

          Answered above

  • If you don’t cancel, at $49 a month, there are better Jb Telstra deals unless you genuinely need 300gb

  • Thanks OP.

Will it affect credit score ? Applying then cancel h to get this “profit”
    Thanks in advance

    • No.

      • Nice ! Thanks !

They do credit checks so yes it will affect ur credit score

        Can confirm this

    I'm waiting for the $1200GC on $89 2yr plan = $39mth (3/10/24) or the $700 on $59 = $29mth 2yr plan (3/8/24).

    • It's works out the same.

    • Is this likely to happen again?

      • yeah, these plans happened only recently.

  • guys plz be warned signing up telstra!

both wife and i switched from amaysim(optus) to telstra and we immediately lost data access in westfield hornsby (lots of westfields are reported to be impacted), below is the whirlpool discussion.

    https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/9pxj4j0v

heard it's sth to do with the DAS agreement btw telstra and westfield being screwed up.

  • I just did this two weeks ago:
$79 plan: $750 gift card, $179 ring camera, returned the ring camera for gift card. Cancelling service (porting out) at the end of the month for $524 cancellation fee (originally $550 but paid month in advance in store)

  • Jb must have too much money giving away between 341-441 to oz bargaineers lol.

    • +1

its a numbers attrition game, there is a portion of people who will not cancel. the GC are only useable in JBHifi - which can be bought at 5% discount and there is a margin which they make on selling their own product. They likely get kickbacks from Telstra, for whom its likely not a cost to add mobile subscribers.

End of the day - great for us bargin rats who will happily run the hack.

    Scenario 1 with $99 1st month refund with $766.59 Repayment :
Effectively discount on the JB GC = (334.41/1200)*100 = 27.9%
ie You can get a $1200GC by paying $865.59

Scenario 2 without 1st month refund with $766.59 Repayment :
Effectively discount on the JB GC = (433.41/1200)*100 = 36.1%
ie You can get a $1200GC by paying $766.59

Works out ok, if someone had intentions to buy JB HiFi Items ~ $1200

    • Now I see where all of these new 2024 Facebook members selling iPhone Pro max with JB Hifi receipts get their phones. 'Ye bro, meet me at Maccas, it's fooly legit and everything, it's sealed bro, fooly.'

      • Dang, sounds familiar and attacked bro 😎

Fyi they do a credit check when signing up with telstra

  • Signed up and Jb staff warned me about credit check failing if I keep gaming this since they saw my history of previous sign ups

    • Yes that is correct. Might not be worth it if you want to get a credit card or mortgage shortly after

      • Yup. Now I regret doing this

    • How long did it take you to sign up and have you got your ur gift card already? I have an existing Telstra ID so mine was instant after submitting. However, my partner is a new customer and shes still waiting for telstra to complete and JB won't release the gift cards once its completed

      • I am an existing telstra cust bec of previous signups. Asked for new sim and number. Took a long time to complete bec they asked lots of stuff. They gave the gc after everything was done

      1. Are you saying gaming the system (ie. with each cancellation) the credit score declines?

      2. How does the credit score increase? Will it replenishes itself over time? (What time frame?)

      • Point 1, I am not sure myself. After this cancellation, I guess I will know.

Point 2, can someone more qualified answer this?

        • +1

Cancelling the plan probably wouldn’t have an impact on the score as I doubt it’s reported on. I’ve never seen post-paid on any of my credit reports but I have seen enquiries from Telstra (as well as many other sign ups like electricity and gas etc) on my file.

Too many enquiries is probably not helping as it looks like you’re going around asking for multiple lines of credit.

As for your score going back up, just make your repayments on time and it will slowly creep up. Other things you probably wouldn’t think about like living at multiple addresses in a short time frame and what suburb you live in can also affect your score.

  • Is it quicker to cancel through JB Mobile or instore?

    • Just do online via telstra and also ask to refund the $99

      • Telstra or JB Mobile?

        • Telstra. Not JB

          • @Brakus: Howcome some people can use JB Mobile to cancel?

            • @Homr: I think both are fine but saw a previous post where someone was charged more or had some difficulty cancelling thru JB

      • Oh so it’s not a two step process as mentioned by Section2 above? He went with cancelling via JB app and then asking refund via Telstra live chat, which i followed and succesfully done also.
Ok thanks i’ll just do all in one via Telstra live chat next time then.

        • Thats what I thought aswell, will try just contacting Telstra to do both cancelling and $99 refund once I receive my gift cards.

          • @Homr: Yeah if all can be done on one live chat via Telstra that’d simplify things

          • @Homr: What do you mean once you receive your gift card? They should give it to you after the signup process

            • @Brakus: I got mine, but my partner hasn't. They won't give her the gift card until Telstra has completed the new service. I'm not sure why its taking so long.

              • @Homr: I was told that if I’m an existing Telstra customer with Telstra ID setup then it should be activated within 5-10mins after order being put thru. If doesn’t have Telstra ID, may take longer (he didn’t specify how long). The GC will only be given to me after number activation. So it’s best you have already setup a verified Telstra ID previous to doing this shenanigans

                • @noelhoi:

So it’s best you have setupa verified Telstra ID previous to doing this shenanigans

Yeh she didn't have Telstra ID.

                • @noelhoi: Just went to the store again and they said the telstra service is still not active so they wont release the gift card. Looks like i have to wait till tomorrow

  • I was told termination fee is $800

    waiting for invoice

    • Who told u? The livechat should have prorated your charge to $766.59

      • JB live chat

        • Disconnect and go via Telstra live chat

          • @noelhoi: thanks for the advice but I already cancel it via same chat

            • @ggfatty: What reason did you give for cancellation?

              • @Brakus: no reason….

              • @Brakus: do u have to give a reason?

                • @Homr: Yes, They asked me

                  • @Brakus: What did you say??

                    • @Homr: Previously said change of mind. Dont know how to justify this time around. I have yet to cancel

  • Anyone know if the cancelled Telstra sim can be used for backup 4g on the Telstra modem?

    • my sim stop working in 5min

First time doing this. These were the steps.

    1. Went to jb signed up to $99 month 24month Telstra plan. (Take ID with you as they will do a credit check and few questions re income and general questions such as where you live and time you lived there). You pay $99 there for first month.

    2. Get the $1200 voucher after activation. (Have your Telstra login available or they set one up for you if don't have one.

    3. In my case I regret getting it and didn't wanted to commit to $99/month so jumped on Telstra chat and cancelled the service explaining why.

    4. Early termination fee for me was $766.59. I couldn't get the $99 back but seen few gotten this.

    5. Logged onto Telstra account and invoice there and paid it already.

So not bad experience for getting $1200 jb voucher for my mistake and signing up.

    • I couldn't get the $99 back but seen few gotten this.

Why cant u get the $99 back?

      • First time doing this. I don't know. Telstra support said it was in the contract. Guess depends how nice they are feeling at Telstra support.

And bet they are tired of ozbargainers wanting the $99 back as well.

        • Whats stopping you re-contacting them again and get a diff CSR and try your luck again?

  • Why can't I see any of the invoices on my telstra account?

    • It takes time, mine hasnt appeared either

      • Apparently doesn't matter. I was still able to cancel via chat

  • Has anyone had the JB gift card cancelled after cancelling their service with telstra?

    • I hope not, can anyone confirm?

  • And another question…

Has anyone encountered signing up to 2 mobile plans (and both had the gift card issue at JB hifi), and then when cancelling later, telstra says one of the is subjected to a Early termination fee. And the other is NOT.

    Basically, they said something like:
The mobile ending in xxx is currently not on any locked in contract if we cancel it, no early termination fee.
But the other mobile ending in xxx is currently in repayment option.

    Early Termination Charge
    $766.59

    • That's interesting, I did 2 plans to get 2 GC, have to cancel tomorrow to see what happens

    • Soo you essentially save another $766 in termination fees? Winning?!

      • I don't know tbh. We will see…
Its a bonus if that's the case, but just wondering what happened?

        • Early christmas present 🎅 PIF (Pay It Forward) to those in need who you know 😊

          • @noelhoi: Nah!! Just checked the telstra app, and i had 2 invoice for $766. Funny why the chat agent said that to me earlier.

I might try to ask tomorrow.

    • Yes husband had the same a couple of months ago. But then sent invoice twice. He then asked them to check and they removed one. Essentially $766.59 for $2400 gift cards. However, I applied for iPads in June and paid twice plus no refunded the first month either.
Not doing anymore now as happy we bagged two fantastic deals but it does stain your credit report. So use with caution.

      • Oh wow!! I'm gonna ask them why i was sent the invoice twice and try my luck.

Why did you say it stains your credit file? Its juatst a credit enquiry right?

        • Actually I think the jb one is fine. Husband was refused new Citi credit card, but we are not sure why, but upone checking the Jb ones don't even come up (he just did a credit report), but churning electricity does…. So I am assuming that Jb is fine. I also did a credit report recently and the Jb one doesn't come up so it should be fine.
We both have excellent credit history btw.
Also when he was chatting to Telstra he told me that he saved the script to make sure they honoured the deal. So that you know.

  • Went in the last minute and did 2 plans for $2400 GC, now have to cancel both the sims

  • Does anyone know if JB will honour the deal that was running a few weeks back. The same $1200 GC but the plan was discounted from $99 to $89

I asked in one store and they said no straight out.

  • just cancelled my plans. I chatted to 2 different agents and they were so different

Agent 1 was very straight forward
Agent 2 had me answering questionnaires and tried to sell me NBN out of the blue hahaha

    • Protip: if you claim you under some sort of financial hardship, they can “put invoice(s) on hold” so you dont have to pay lumpsump in a couple weeks time deadline. You can then make regular smaller payments to avoid being knocked by their debt collector, no due date that I can see…

  • Hi, I am actually after the plan and the gift cards. Upon signing up, can we just keep the gift cards and not buy anything until later?

Hoping to get a phone closer to my overseas departure date, for TRS :)

    Thank You

    • +1

      Yes they don’t expire

    • +1

The $800 is via Telstra. No way to use gift card

  • This deal is back?

    • Looks like it is.
Don't think I can change my mind again :). Also not sure how it effect credit rating..

  • Is there anyone who got Google Pixel 9 Pro deal as well as this $1200 gift card deal on the same account?

    • +1

Try to ask nicely and try a few reps.

  • Disclaimer
This information is for general guidance only. Please note that JB Hi-Fi gift cards are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged for cash. Additionally, there are out-of-pocket costs of approximately $800 involved in this process. Proceed at your own risk.

    Hi everyone,

There’s been some confusion about the process of obtaining the $1200 JB Hi-Fi gift card through this method. Let me clarify how it works and what you need to be aware of:

    1. Plan Sign-Up

      • Visit the JB Hi-Fi store and sign up for a new $99/month Telstra plan.
      • Important: You need to port an existing number to qualify for the $1200 gift card. If you use a new number, the gift card amount will be reduced to $1100.

    2. Initial Payment

      • At the store, you’ll pay $99 upfront, and they’ll issue a $1200 JB Hi-Fi gift card (non-refundable and not exchangeable for cash).

    3. Cancellation Process

      • After receiving the gift card, download the JB Hi-Fi app and Telstra app.
      • Use Wi-Fi to log into your account (avoid using the new data plan).
      • Through the Telstra chat support in the app, request cancellation of the plan. Provide a reason, like "it was a mistake" or "a family member didn’t want the plan."
      • Porting Out: If you want to keep your number, port it to another carrier immediately before cancellation is finalized.

    4. Refund and Charges

      • Once the cancellation is processed, Telstra will bill you approximately $766 for the early termination cost.
      • If Telstra hasn’t charged the $99 initial fee yet, you can request a refund through the Telstra app.

    Cost Breakdown

    • Upfront cost: $99
    • Early termination charge: $766 (approx.)
    • Total out-of-pocket cost: ~$800

    Final Outcome

    • Gift card value: $1200 (non-refundable)
    • Profit:
      • $400 if Telstra refunds the $99 upfront payment.
      • $300 if Telstra does not refund the $99 payment.

    Key Reminders
    - This process requires an initial out-of-pocket cost of ~$800.
    - JB Hi-Fi gift cards cannot be exchanged for cash.
    - Only proceed if you’re prepared to cover the costs and have a use for the gift card immediately.

    Make an informed decision!

  • Does anyone have any insights on the $1200 gift card offer that ends today? Do you think they might extend it at the same value or reduce it?

I’m feeling FOMO but also wondering—what if they increase it to $1400 on Black Friday?

  • This is tempting for an S24 Ultra that has 400 off at JB. That and this promo makes it about 1400.
