    That's a lot of laptop for $400

  • Any other opening specials?

    • +1

There's a Brauhn $499 46" FHD digital TV, a $20 2000W Lumina bagless cyclonic vacuum cleaner, a $199 9.7" Brauhn Android Tablet. Vac looks like good value.

      http://www.aldi.com.au/au/html/offers/2827_23820.htm

      • Is the vacuum this one?

        • +1

Yup.. that's the one. Quite a deal at $20 I think.

  • $399 is netbook pricing but it's a real laptop!
ps this was just a special for a new store? strange, i've been to at least 2 new Aldi stores and neither had a $130 discount on a laptop!

    • +1

Only available from the Carnegie ALDI

  • Great price and the specs are acceptable, IMO.
I hope that there will be another one with better graphic card, of course, the price will be higher, so i can get 1.

  • +6

Better camp outside tonight. Chances are there are going to be only 2-3 units like most Aldi tech specials… :P

  • The Carnegie store opens on the 12th.

I have the first gen i3 version of this (Akoya E7216) and the build quality is certainly reasonable. The only major flaw I had was the touchpad was absolutely garbage (rage inducing). Can't really compare these two models as they are completely different designs, but just giving my 2 cents worth. Memory configuration on the old model was 2x2GB.

Also fyi, this supports two HDDs "The integrated second hard drive slot allows you to more than double your storage capacity by adding a standard 2.5" hard drive."

mouse peripherals are quite common these days you know

    • +1

I stuck a cheap 64GB SSD in the second bay of mine. Running linux on it … / on the SSD, /home on the HDD. Goes like a rocket.
Awesome machine for the price I paid… Even better at this price.

  • -5

Really don't think it's that special for a no name brand laptop.
MLN have a HP notebook for $399 with better specs
    http://www.mln.com.au/product/?itemID=4281
    And it's available now.

    • +20

Snowflake, suggest have a look at those specs in more detail:

      • The ALDI system is 17.3" 1600x900 which attracts a price premium. The MLN is the cheaper and more common 15.6" 1366x768.
      • The ALDI system has a better CPU. MLN are confused - their system comes with a HD3000 iGPU.
      • The ALDI system comes with USB 3.0. The MLN has USB 2.0 only.
      • The ALDI system has WIDI. Nothing like that on the MLN system

There are only two advantages the MLN system offers:

      • a larger 500GB HDD over the 320GB offered by the ALDI system.
      • comes with Win8. It costs $15 to get it with the ALDI system. Ooh wee.

Also, those base HP systems are a real bargain-basement plasticky build. Not something I'd want to use.

      • +3

        What ruraro said.

    • +2

Not no name. Medion is big in germany and has the money to support teams in F1 (force india)

      • Not sure Force india really counts as a team though, but somone has to come last :P

  • +1

Wow - decent 1600x900 screen too. That's surprising, and an absolute bargain.

      • +6

They aren't held up to your face.

  • +1

    I am near that store
    what other things on special

  • What's the address of the store? I live in the area.

  • Tempted to pay someone to ship one to me… Hmmm better not, already over my budget :/

I desperately need a new laptop n would love to get one of these. If some kind soul would be so nice as to help that'll surely make myChristmas. Pretty please ? Lol. Please let me know If any of u wouldn't mind

    • -1

I think you're setting yourself or someone else up for a huge fall. There are so many things that can go wrong with what you're suggesting. The laptop may be faulty, may get damaged in transit, may get mis-delivered and go missing, the person may do a runner with your money, they may purchase and you reneg on the deal.

Stop being childish and stand on your own two feet like everyone else in life.

      • +2

The request is a bit of a stretch given the poster above doesn't even live in the same state, but I don't understand the "childish" label, if someone wants to help out then why not? People doing favours for each other hardly seems childish to me.

        • -1

          "Pretty please ? Lol."

It's the way that it was asked was childish. If you're going to ask for a favour, ask for it sincerely.

So you think it's a good idea kabigon? I don't see you offering to buy the laptop big guy!

  • I paid $420 for a Lenovo E320 (i3, 4Gb Ram, 13" screen). Now I wanted a 13" screen but this would have been great as a desktop back up/replacement for those who don't do much more than surfing the web or MS Office work.

  • Aldi laptop batteries are dreadful and very expensive to replace if you want to by from Medion. I bought one a few years ago, the battery died just after 2 years. Medion advised that the replacement battery would be $200!! Bought an aftermarket one from OS for $75 instead. However for this price its not a bad piece of machinery. Whats the warranty on this thing? Two years?

    • so is the aftermarket battery any good?

      • Doesn't matter much if it's $125 cheaper.

(but I only ever had to buy one laptop battery or ebay and it was better than the original dell).

    • +2

This is no different for any other laptop manufacturer ever…OEM replacements are expensive. eBay is the way to go for replacement batteries for laptops out of warranty, as you have discovered.

Plus I don't think anyone is seriously expecting good battery life from a 17" desktop replacement laptop…

    • I get 4hrs web surfing on mine (running linux off a small SSD installed in the second drive bay). That's twice as much as I've had out of previous budget 15.6" laptops. Batteries can be found on ebay for the same price as any other non genuine battery.

  • I wonder if I can up the RAM to 8 G?. i.e. add two 4 GB modules.

  • +2

I bought one of these from the Kotara opening, awesome value for money lappy! :)

  • Anywhere else has the identical laptop for a price match?

  • Checked http://www.australia.aldi.com/au/html/service/ALDI_new_store… to see if any other stores are opening. Yes they are… can if these guys have the same specials:

  • Got one!,.. there were plenty left when I picked up mine around 8.25 (they had opened before the 8.30 standard opening time)

    • plenty left as at 6pm. Didn't pick one up as I was more interested in the vacuum cleaner but they were all gone! I guess the brand name really makes a difference. If it is a HP or Toshiba with the same specs, I will be all over it.

      • +2

A lot of the Medion PCs & laptops used to be MSI manufactured. This was about 5 years ago so it may have changed since, in the end I am of the opinion there is little difference between HP, Toshiba or Medion (or any other brand for that matter). All brands have been known to have duds, and statistically considering the output quantity of the larger companies you are more likely to receive a dud from the big brands?

        • +1

Absolutely correct. Quite a few of my family & friends bought one of the earlier Akoya laptops http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/37958 & almost two years on I haven't heard of a single breakdown amongst that group yet! Conversely, a friend has just returned an expensive new Sony Vaio for the second time in a month…

The big difference with HP is that they are complete asses when it comes to warranty with consumer grade laptops. For that reason, I would take pretty much any brand over HP any day. At least Aldi will honour their warranty nowadays! ;)

  • Anyone else saw this at Eastwood, NSW?

  • +1

Still quite a few of these left at $399 in the Carnegie shop as of yesterday afternoon.
I'm using one now - very nice sized screen and performance for he price. Build quality feels good and the touch pad is surprisingly nice to use.

    • Got one at the carnegie store, still heaps left as mentioned. Thanks for the heads up.

Might even go on further discount since theres still so many left?!?!

      • I doubt it. The number of stocks at the Carnegie store has gone down quite a bit since the first day opening till yesterday when I visited. $399 is probably the lowest they can go as only the HP ( please correct me if I am wrong) has a i3 laptop that goes for $399 at MLN.

  • Sold out at Eastwood NSW apparently day after opening.

Interesting tidbit from one of the store staff however.. Aldi will be having another laptop sale in early January that is for all stores. Will keep an eye out for that one!
