    Mediatek for $1.2k?

    Really….

    • +10

It's not that far off the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

    • +5

Even Samsung are using these chips on their most expensive tablet model that starts at $2100. Mediatek have come a long way.

    • +1

This processor is equal to SD8 gen 3.. flagship

    • +4

Bit behind the times my friend. Mediatek have been making great chips for a while now.

  • +5

Can be had about $100 cheaper on AliExpress.
Warranty with Kogan isn’t worth much.

    • +3

Kogan's customer service is so bad. Amazon and AliExpress are way better.

    • You can't claim TRS and/or salary packaging from AliExpress, right? Or does AE provide GST invoice now?

      • They have invoices but they're seriously quite lacking in terms of detail. Still an invoice though!

        • I could only find this, which AFAIK means not really recognized by the ATO for claims?

For a sec, I thought I looked at iPhone 15 Pro max, lol

Wait until you see a Pixel 9 Pro XL and an iPhone 15 Pro Max side by side

        Completely different looking phones?

  • +1

will it still work here after the 3g shutdown ?

    • +1

I can confirm that it has Voice over LTE (VoLTE). Therefore it should survive the 3g shutdown.

      • Cheers

      • +6

Not necessarily, if it can't do E000 over Volte on all 3 carriers.

        • I read somewhere that VoLTE profiles are not standard across carriers. Is that true? Say if someone moves to a different provider, is it possible their phones won't work if the hardware isn't compatible with the VoLTE profile?

          • +1

@BadGiraffe: That is above my level of knowledge.

Suggest you have a look at Whirlpool, where there are 3 lengthy threads on the 3G shutdown, and implications for VoLTE + E000.

      • Expensive brick if it can't do E000 Emergency calling over Volte

      • Depends whether it has been cleared by carriers as E000 compatible, can't find any imeis to check with, I only know 14 ultra global is good but no guarantee on others. I would probably get OnePlus 12 for same price over this.

        • Does that mean OnePlus 12 is whitelisted and will work with Aus carriers? Any particular version we need to buy, for ex., Indian version or global model only?

          • @sd224: I have so far tried Chinese PJD110 and North America CPH2583 model IMEI, both are good according to AMTA IMEI test website. I think cheapest is from shenzen trading which is $1140 for 16/512 and is Chinese model PJD110 with global software (no esim). Only just discovered today, I thought all imported phones were going to be dead but seems some flagship ones have been whitelisted.

            • @zachhambo: Thanks, good to know that they are not blocking all the imported phones !
I am currently holding out for OnePlus13, hopefully it works in OZ as well …

Does hefty price not mean what it used to?

  • +1

I've got other Xiaomi products and reckon the punch way above their weight in raw $ terms. Great quality and power devices

  • Ah, the Kogan directly imported "global" version of a phone.

This would be the version that Telstra doesn't have on its white list, and doesn't work on that network, and when 6G comes along, and 4G shuts down, it stops working altogether and has to be thrown away.

Fool me once Kogan with your global versions that supposedly work as well as a phone made for Australia. You don't fool me twice. But clearly there are a lot of people you will.

    • +1

You expect to be using this phone when 4G shuts down in a decade?

  • +5

Gone are the days of Xiaomi flagship killers for ~$500

      Blame covid and US dollar

        shakes fist

this is more expensive than my pixel 8 pro…

  • Isn't the regular 14 better for around the same price?

I have 13T Pro, happy with the phone so far after almost an year. Bought it in Thailand for around $880. The phone fell off my bicycle at high speed in Indonesia twice, the screen didn't break (I had protective case and screen protector). In Australia I'm with Aldi mobile and the phone didn't have any issues.
