  • Coles ultimate gcs will be marginally better. 10% discount vs points…. if you can get it

    • +1

I find TCN has better stores than ultimate

      • Ultimate has Officeworks, wich gives you more discount if you do a prce beat

        • K. I don't need to shop there

      • I found it worse. It doesn't have cinemas

    • It's also easier to find Coles card vs woolies. I personally prefer points over upfront discount, if used correctly gives you more benefit in the long run

      • -1

How does the maths work on that? Points give you an effective 9.09% discount vs a straight 10% off. And a higher up front outlay via points.

        • Because quite a few people don't use the points accumulated towards getting discount. They convert it into frequent flyer and get 4x more benefit our of it

        • +5

That “effective 9.09% discount” assumes that you convert 2,000 Everyday Rewards points into $10 off a future shop at participating businesses (e.g. Woolworths, BIG W, MILKRUN, EG Ampol), then you treat that $10 off a future shop as credit you need to redeem in order to realise its benefit.

However, if you instead redeem that 2,000 Everyday Rewards points for 1,000 Qantas points, what would the Qantas points be worth? That is a rabbit hole other people have gone down in much more detail, but you can see what the previous commenter was implying by saying “if used correctly”.

          • @WookieMonster: How is the 20x EDR Points (for use in Woolies) effectively 9.09% discount? I thought it was effectively 10%?

            • +4

@Haunt: It depends on how you view the bonus Everyday Rewards points.

If you purchase a $100 TCN Baby gift card through this deal (as an example) and you scan an Everyday Rewards points, you will earn 20x points for every $1 you spend on that gift card (i.e. you will earn 2,000 Everyday Rewards points). 2,000 Everyday Rewards points converts into $10 in Everyday Rewards Dollars (which you need to redeem on a future shop on eligible items at Woolworths or other participating businesses).

              Put simply:

Amount you spend What you receive in return
$100 $100 TCN Baby gift card & $10 in Everyday Rewards Dollars

If you want to calculate the effective discount, the formula would be:

effective discount = 1 - (amount you spend)/(what you receive in return)
              = 1 - (100)/(100+10)
              = 1 - 100/110
              = 1 - 0.9090909
              = 0.09090909
              = 9.090909%

The reason I included the Everyday Rewards Dollars in the what you receive in return section is that I do not consider it equivalent to cash (and you generally cannot convert Everyday Rewards Dollars into cash); you have to spend the Everyday Rewards Dollars in order to benefit from it.1 On the other hand, if this deal was for 10% off $100 TCN Baby gift cards, you only need to spend $90 for that gift card, and you do not need to spend the $10 you saved to realise that benefit.

You may have seen an alternative explanation in some previous Woolworths or BIG W deals:

Basically 10% of the gift card’s value returned to you in the form of Everyday Rewards points.

This is a different way of looking at the Everyday Rewards points you earn from this deal. If we use the $100 TCN Baby gift card as an example again, the 2,000 Everyday Rewards points you earn through this deal (which converts into $10 in Everyday Rewards Dollars) is 10% of the gift card’s face value. In other words, this view is comparing the value of the Everyday Rewards points earned in respect to the gift card’s face value. This is not a discount per se, because (in my view) the Everyday Rewards Dollars needs to be redeemed in order to realise the $10 value.

              Does that make sense?

              1. Put it another way: if Everyday Rewards closed your Everyday Rewards account on Thursday before you had a chance to redeem the $10 in Everyday Rewards Dollars you got from purchasing the $100 TCN Baby gift card, you will effectively have spent $100 for a $100 TCN Baby gift card (and have nothing else to show for it).

              • -3

@WookieMonster: When the 9%ers bring this up, they always fail to mention that you're also getting a discount on the reward spend too - ie. $10 worth of groceries for $9.09 - the discount rate is correct, but applies to both the gift card and the value of the groceries

To make things simpler, lets say you spend that $10 to buy $10 worth of fuel. You just received a $100 gift card, and $10 worth of fuel, but you paid only $100. Therefore, if you're applying the discount rate uniformly — as the 9%ers are so hell bent on doing — here is what you paid and received

                1. You purchased a $100 gift card for $90.90
                2. You also purchased $10 worth of fuel for $9.10!

Now, this is rather silly, don't you think? If I go for a shop and one of the things I buy is half price, I got that item 50% off regardless of what else is in my basket. So you have to understand, not every agrees its "only 9% discount versus 10% cash off offer", because the other way to look at it is:

                1. You purchased a $100 gift card for $90
                2. You purchased $10 worth of fuel for $10

                et voila.

                • +1

@mattyf: In that last example you could have bought another $10 for $9 with a separate voucher if you really want to

                  • @Kanjus: If you are a person who runs every dollar spent through gift cards, then I see your point

                • @mattyf: I would say it is silly even to debate over this. With the time and energy spent I'd rather go and buy myself another batch of cards:)

                  • @truetypezk: its worthwhile to debate, particularly because you save time and energy if you understand the math. for instance, right now there is 10% off at Coles, and 20x EDR points at the W

if you're a 9 you're going to think the Coles deal is better - even though variable load is excluded, so you're going to race all over town to find the cards in your desired denomination.

if you're a 10 like me, you'll just go straight to woolies and grab the variable load

the honest answer is - just like an "effective" tax rate - the "effective" discount rate will depend on the spending habits of the person. there is no objective discount rate.

                    • +1

@mattyf: Well I think it finally boils down to how effectively you can convert your pts into cash/cash equivalents, which is very different depending on your knowledge and circumstances.

              • @WookieMonster: Amazing response. I have read another 9.09% explanation on another thread but this was well put through. Thank you for making it easier to understand.

        • -4

A 9.09% discount on BOTH the gift card AND your grocery spend reward

OR a 10% discount off the gift card on its own, in the form of non-discounted groceries

This 9% myth has got to die, because people are misrepresenting it as a 9% discount on only the GC - which is flat out false

          • @mattyf:

This 9% myth has got to die, because people are misrepresenting it as a 9% discount on only the GC - which is flat out false

The math provided by WookieMonster checks out, therefore how is the discount being misrepresented?

As mentioned, if the gift card was 10% off (i.e. paying $90 for a $100 gift card) then it would be a true 10% discount.

            • -5

@magic8ballgag: you paid $90 for the gift card and $10 for $10 worth of groceries

  • +1

Hoping to jag some of the EFTPOS cards to use at Aldi. Easy way to earn credit card points without the surcharge.

  • TCN baby - Best for baby bunting 🙌

  • -1

Does this mean you can't do $500 for the luxury?

    • Are you able to elaborate? I cannot see anything in the deal that suggests you cannot load a TCN Luxury eftpos gift card with $500.

  • Probably have already disappeared from woolies shevles.
    Luxury eftpos

  • -2

I have never seen TCN Luxury Eftpos Variable Gift Cards at Woolworths ever.

  • -3

None in 3 stores that I've visited over the weekend (Sydney south suburbs)

Another case of misleading advertising by these jokers

  • Doesn’t say variable load is excluded for TCN, so I assume it’s included?

    • +3

It should be included, because both offers specifically mention you will earn 20x points or 10x points for every $1 you spend on the variable load denomination. The TCN Kids gift card offer also specifically says you will only earn bonus points on a maximum of two variable load TCN Kids gift cards per day.

The only gift cards in this deal that are sold in a variable load denomination at Woolworths (AFAIK) are the TCN Kids gift card and the TCN Luxury eftpos gift card.

(If you think about it, it would be a bit strange for Woolworths to exclude the variable load TCN Kids gift card from this deal, but then say you can earn points when buying a maximum of two per day. It would be even more strange for Woolworths to exclude the variable load TCN Luxury eftpos gift card from this deal, because TCN Luxury eftpos gift cards are only sold at Woolworths in a variable load denomination.)

    • +7

      Not a hack, it's literally shoplifting/stealing.

I get it there is no monetary value to it, still illegal.

  • Has anyone try to pay ATO bill through Auspost using TCN Eftpos?

    • +1

shouldn't be any issue, if it's not working, let us know and you can use it for Aldi or any utility bill(confirmed myself on this)

    • If the staff notice you aren't using a "real" bank card they may cancel or refuse to let you do the transaction

If they don't care, it will work

  • "a limit of 10 cards per day per Rewards member.", does that mean I cannot earn EDR points on the same day after 10 cards?

    • +1

Correct, you can only earn points on a maximum of 10 gift cards per Everyday Rewards account per day (and this is something the checkout actually enforces).

However, if you have access to another Everyday Rewards account, you can earn points on another 10 gift cards each day.

    • Damn first time I’ve seen this usually it’s Xper transaction.
      Anyone tested it?

    • +1

Keep in mind that TCN Kids variable is just two cards.

Also, keep an eye on the register. It will show you how much points you would get for that transaction. If it doesn’t add up, don’t proceed / check with the cashier.

  • Been to a few Woolworths in Sydney and can’t even see of these on the shelf anymore

  • +1

Waiting for Cafe Choice or Restaurant Choice, if not, eating home for healthier and saving money for obz deals.

  • TCN good food. Is it same as the restaurant choice giftcards?

    • +4

      No, not at all.

      In summary:

How to redeem at merchant? Swipe the physical card on the EFTPOS terminal2 Swipe the physical card on the EFTPOS terminal, use via a supported mobile wallet, or use online or over-the-phone at merchants (where accepted by the merchant)
Support for mobile wallets? No Yes (Apple Pay, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet)
Can exchange for a digital version of the gift card? No No
Can be redeemed at Square EFTPOS terminals? No3 Yes4

      1. There is an older eftpos version of the Restaurant Choice gift card, but I have not seen them for sale at Coles or Woolworths for a number of months.

      2. There is a digital TCN Good Food gift card that operates on the Mastercard network and can be added to supported mobile wallets, but it is currently not possible to exchange a physical TCN Good Food gift card for the digital version.

      3. Square EFTPOS terminals will not process payments on the eftpos network if you swipe a physical card on the EFTPOS terminal.

      4. There were recent issues where Blackhawk Network (the gift card operator) was flagging transactions processed through Square EFTPOS terminals as “fraudulent” and rejecting them, but this issue should be resolved now.

      • their website seems to suggest only venues listed on the site will accept the TCN Good Food.

        • Their website has suggested that for a long time. However, the reason I say it works at MCC 5812 and 5813 (where accepted by the merchant) is largely based on this conversation.

      • +1

Thank you for all these information. Really great.

  • @WookieMonster can the TCN Luxury eftpos Gift cards be used to buy another gift card in-store?

Apologies if this question has been asked many times before!

    • Which store? The answer will depend on which store you are referring to.

If it is Woolworths (because this deal is at Woolworths), I suggest you look at the table in the FAQs. (There is a link to the FAQs at the bottom of the deal description.)

      • Apologies for this late response, I've only just been able to look at the FAQ now.

It's very helpful, thank you 😊

Interestingly if I refer to the Coles section, a TCN eftpos gift card can be used to purchase another TCN eftpos gift card.

However, it's uncertain whether the TCN eftpos gift card can be used to purchase Coles Mastercard or Vanilla Visa Gift cards which are popular cards when they are on promotion. Do you have an update on these gift cards?

  • Does the cards take 24 hours to get the balance added? I bought a variable card this afternoon and it is showing $0.

    • I don't know about the variable cards as I bought the fixed donimation, and I had to sit there and wait while the machine activated them all (10) so it took a minute or so, then he handed me all the activation slips. I haven't tried looking up the card online (if you can) or using it however to see if it actually worked immediately but I assume it would have. The only website however to see you balance might take overnight or something though I suppose.

  • +1

Anyone know if there is any limit on how many you can use at JB?

    • +1

FYI for anyone else.. I used 20 easy.. the girl said she has seen way more than that being used… takes awhile to open em up and apply them all one at a time though!

  • +1

I have tried multiple times to buy Visa/MasterCard or EFTPOS gift cards when there is a promotion, but I've never been able to get any. Do they hide it if they are on promotion?

    • this is like to win a lotto

  • Good luck and just to save some folks' time and trip in South West Sydney, none are available from the system and this TCN is stocked up by 3rd party, nothing to do with Woolies

  • Didn't get my rewards points from buying 6 x $50 TCN Him cards, anyway to fix this?

    • It says up to 14 days to see them in your account. I just made sure they came up at the checkout before paying.

  • Bought some HIM & Kids gift cards, tried to redeem JB gift cards. I am able to swap the Kids gift card for JB, but received unable to redeem for this voucher error. Anyone else had the same issue?

    • +2

One workaround is to register the TCN gift card first, then attempt an exchange again. Have you already tried this?

      • +1

        Thanks! It works after registering.

  • +1

South West Sydney ~ Carnes Hill had a bunch (8-10) of the variable load Luxury last night, around 7:30pm. purchased two from Prestons on Wednesday and didn’t want to run the risk of being absent minded and purchasing a bunch, then misplacing them. Also didn’t want to be greedy as I figure I’ve already scored 5000 QFF points from Wednesday’s purchase 🙃

  • Snagged $600 worth of the TCN cards to buy an Apple Watch at TGG. 6000 Qantas points in the holster straight away, almost enough for a flight to Sydney. Too easy.
